Martin,

The answer to your first question is no. The problem only occurs some
of the time. When it does occur, it is not the case that the numbers go
to 0 once it is fully charged. The numbers all went to 0 when it was
partially charged.

Hi,

Sorry, there's no chance I could figure out which app crashed at the

apps that crashed did so because of the domino effect.

2009-08-29 Thread Richard Cavell
I submitted the original bug. The notify-osd package has now been fixed
to return to the previous behaviour. So let's stop discussing it and
move on to something else.

I find it interesting that although this bug has been correctly declared
'invalid', it could also now be described as 'fix released'.

[Bug 419846] [NEW] Cannot complete shutdown sequence on Karmic

2009-08-27 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

[Please correct the package for me]

I am using Karmic, currently alpha 4 with all updates applied to late
August.

My hardware is a second-generation MacBook.

When I select 'shutdown' from the System menu or anywhere else, my
programs log out as usual. I then get the ubuntu logo and a progress
meter that proceeds from left to right. It gets to about two-thirds the
way, then my screen goes black.

I get a cursor in the top-left corner of a black text screen. Usually
it just sits there blinking indefinitely. I am able to type onto the
screen, but it does not process anything that I type as a command.

Occasionally I get messages such as Shutting down Firestarter
application (I can say that Firestarter was definitely not running
before I hit shutdown, and another time it said Shutting down NTP
daemon, and then Starting NTP daemon immediately afterwards. (Which
seems inappropriate because I told it to shut down).

I never had this problem in Jaunty, or in Karmic until the most recent
updates. Please advise what further information I should provide to
pinpoint the problem.

[Bug 418546] [NEW] apt-get reports ridiculous expected time for completion

2009-08-25 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

I am on 64-bit Ubuntu Karmic.

Sometimes when using apt-get, the program reports a very large
estimated time remaining.

For example, today apt-get reported that upon performing sudo apt-get
update, it will take 213503982334601 days, 6 hours, 59 minutes and 22
seconds to complete. This is roughly equal to 40 times the present
estimates of the age of the universe.

At the time that apt-get reported this expected completion time, it
was downloading at 3161 bytes per second, so it seems unlikely that
the calculation is correct. If it is correct, it is of no practical
value for apt-get to do this.

I am pleased to say that my download completed without incident about
a minute later.

[Bug 381888] Re: AVG antivirus software causes system halt

2009-08-23 Thread Richard Cavell
Hi,

I was using whichever version of AVG for Linux was current on 30 May
2009. I am currently unable to ascertain which version that was. I was
using 64-bit Jaunty with all updates applied up to 30 May.

Since reporting this bug I have upgraded to 64-bit Karmic alpha 4 with
all updates applied. I am now on an ext4 filesystem and my computer now
has 3 Gigs of RAM. Today I downloaded AVG 32-bit 8.5.286 with virus
database 270.13.64/2321 and installed it. I was able to scan my entire
filesystem without issue. Therefore, I cannot reproduce the bug on what
is now a significantly different setup.

[Bug 415255] [NEW] Sound output level is ridiculously high

2009-08-18 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

Screenshot should show what I'm talking about.

I have many, many problems with sound on Karmic. Usually only one app
can play sound properly - it steals sound from the other apps. At the
moment it's Steam.exe running on wine.

At the moment I can play Steam games and sound works fine. However,
look at the sound output level - it's obviously wrong.

I'm on 64-bit Karmic alpha 4 with a few updates since alpha 4 but not
all of them. Sound support on my second-gen MacBook has actually got
worse during the Karmic development cycle. Jaunty never gave me a
problem with sound.

[Bug 413533] [NEW] Sound is unreliable on MacBook

2009-08-14 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

I'm on Karmic alpha 4, 64-bit on a second-generation MacBook.

Often when I play sound I cannot hear the sound being played. (ie the
speakers do not produce an actual sound, despite the application
attempting to play a sound). If I use Pulse Audio Volume Meter to
monitor volume levels, the bars move, clearly indicating that it thinks
it's playing sound. It recognizes my sound hardware as IEC 958.

Counter-Strike sound under wine works perfectly. However, I never hear
a login sound, XChat does not produce sound effects, and if I attempt to
play a .wav file using play from command line, I hear nothing.

My speakers work fine on OS X and, like I said, with occasional Ubuntu
apps.

My sound works perfectly with Karmic alpha 3 out of the box and also
with Jaunty, as well as Fedora 11. My sound broke after some of the
pulseaudio updates between alpha 3 and alpha 4. (According to IRC, I'm
not the only one).

[Bug 411315] [NEW] Sound Preferences window is unuseable

2009-08-10 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

[Please fix my package choice].

I'm on Ubuntu Karmic alpha with all updates to date. I'm on a second-
generation MacBook. My sound worked perfectly under Jaunty and Karmic
until the recent Pulse Audio updates. Now many of my applications are
hit and miss - youtube won't play sound but games under wine will play
sound. But I'm not complaining about that in this bug report.

If I look at my processes under System Monitor, I have about 30
instances of aplay, each of which is using 800, 804 or 808 kbytes of
RAM and currently sleeping. I presume that these are sounds that were
supposed to play but have failed to do so given the new audio
architecture changes. I can kill them manually or using pulseaudio
-k.

I have selected Sound from my System-Preferences menu to see if I can
fix it. It is misbehaving. The sound preferences window has no title
and no X in the close button's area. The window is about 3 screens
high and cannot be resized. If I select the tabs, the screen is only
partially drawn - it's as though it wants to spend about a minute
redrawing the screen but it never actually gets there.

I realize that the underlying problem is with Pulse Audio, but still
Sound Preferences shouldn't behave like this. Screenshots should
explain.

[Bug 410604] [NEW] Power Manager reports incorrect battery charge

2009-08-08 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

I have a second-gen MacBook, 15 inch white version with original
battery. Latest battery firmware (1.4) applied in OS X. The battery
still holds charge and works as it ought to. I have external lights
that show me how much charge there is and whether the battery is
charging.

I took my laptop off power about 2 hours ago, and allowed it to slowly
discharge. I then plugged it back into power about 1 hour ago. I am
attaching screenshots to show what power manager is reporting. It
correctly identified that the power slowly drained, but when I plugged
the AC power back in, it declared that there is 2.8% charge remaining
and has done so for the last hour. I can confirm using my external
lights that my battery discharged no lower than 80% and then was
charging betwen 80 and 100% for the last hour.

Also, looking at the power statistics, it seems as though something is
SNAFU. It appears as though one of the numbers is miscalculated. Also,
my laptop reported 2.8% full for an hour when the rate was 2.8 Watts.
Is it confusing the percentage-full with the wattage?

[Bug 410604] Re: Power Manager reports incorrect battery charge

2009-08-08 Thread Richard Cavell
Hi,

Sorry, I should have said: I am experiencing this bug in 64-bit Karmic,
with all updates applied up until early August. I never had any
problems with battery status info in Jaunty. Karmic seems to have
nothing but trouble interpreting my battery status, but Jaunty worked
fine.

I am currently unable to reproduce the bug (ie Karmic is currently
reporting the battery percentage correctly). I'll run apport-collect if
it happens again.

[Bug 410911] [NEW] Dependencies for wine1.2-dev are wrong

2009-08-08 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

Package wine contains the 'stable' release of wine (1.0.1). Package
wine1.2 contains the 'unstable' release of wine, 1.1.26. Wine has 1.2
marked as a version milestone, so the name wine1.2 makes sense.

So it is possible to install both version 1.0.1 and 1.1.26
simultaneously.

But package wine1.2-dev depends on wine (=1.1.26-0ubuntu1). It should
depend on wine1.2 (=1.1.26-0ubuntu1). There is no wine 1.1.26 on
Ubuntu. That version of wine is called wine1.2. Package wine1.2-dev
also conflicts with and replaces wine-dev (1.2). This is not correct.
Package wine-dev version 1.0.1 ought to be able to exist independently.
Package 1.2-dev does not conflict with wine-dev version 1.0.1. Also, I
think the libs need to be checked.

[Bug 410544] [NEW] You have caps lock on stays on when caps lock is changed

2009-08-07 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

1. I turn caps lock on.
2. I run a program that uses gksudo to prompt me for my password.
3. It gives me the password prompt, including the phrase You have caps lock
on.
4. Another program (Steam) steals my keyboard focus from the password prompt.
5. I turn caps lock off while the keyboard focus is not within the password
prompt.
6. I put my keyboard focus back into the password prompt.

Now the You have caps lock on message is still there, while I don't
have caps lock on. Presumably the window polls for caps lock to be
turned off. It should also at least poll for when the window goes in
focus again, and test caps lock again when focus is regained.

[Bug 410546] [NEW] Steam and gksudo don't play nicely

2009-08-07 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

1. Steam.exe (the Valve software distribution channel) is set to load as one
of my startup applications (under wine, of course).
2. One of my other startup applications is gksudo firestarter, which loads
firestarter with root privileges.
3. I boot my computer.

Now, Steam manages to load before my wireless network has had a chance
to connect, so Steam gives an error and offers to retry or work in
offline mode. Meanwhile, gksudo has darkened the rest of the screen and
is requesting a password, and has the keyboard's focus. But the gksudo
password input window is entirely behind the Steam error window.
Steam's window cannot be moved and its buttons don't work while the
gksudo password prompt is active. So in order to proceed, I need to
type my password into an imaginary password entry prompt (it looks as
though I'm typing the password into Steam). The Steam window should be
behind the password entry box (or gksudo should place itself in front of
Steam).

Karmic alpha 3, latest everything.

[Please correct my package choice.]

[Bug 407541] [NEW] Screen inexplicably goes black occasionally

2009-07-31 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

I'm running 64-bit Karmic alpha 3 with all updates applied, on a MacBook
2nd generation. Intel GMA945 graphics architecture.

Karmic alpha 3 is an order of magnitude better with its support for this
chipset than Jaunty ever was. The new drivers are a huge step forward.
However, about once every couple of hours, my screen goes completely
black - as though it has turned off completely. After a second or two,
it comes back on spontaneously. My programs etc are unaffected. The
computer does not acknowledge in any way that the screen has turned off.

It is definitely not the screensaver. I cannot reproduce the problem by
performing any particular action. It happens while surfing the Internet
with Firefox, playing Half-Life under wine, using update manager, any
old time. It definitely does not happen when I'm booted into OS X or a
live CD, or under Jaunty, and I have spent enough time in each
environment that I would have seen it if it were to happen in those
environments.

I don't think my bug is a dupe because others have reported non-
recoverable situations. Mine is completely recoverable.

charge indicator which allows me to verify that it is 100% charged. Yet,
the indicator clearly reads 0.0%. Screenshot should verify this.

The applet has correctly identified that my AC was plugged in when this
screenshot was taken. If I unplug AC power, it changes to the icon
without the plug, and a red minimum-charge indication.

[Bug 405150] [NEW] File explorer won't delete files that can't be moved to the trash

2009-07-27 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

(Sorry if it's a dupe)

rich...@richard-laptop:~$ uname -a
Linux richard-laptop 2.6.31-4-generic #22-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 24 18:05:56 UTC
2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

64-bit Karmic alpha 3 with all updates applied, on my 2nd-gen MacBook.
I have an external hard disk attached via USB. I select any file on
that hard disk in nautilus and select Delete. The computer gives me a
dialog (screenshot attached). I select Delete. The files stay where
they are and can't be deleted from within the file browser.

So I opened a terminal and did sudo rm -r * on the external hard disk -
no problems.

2009-07-27 Thread Richard Cavell
Scott,

I'm adding a screenshot of Power Statistics - Device Information,
which I can access by right clicking on the power icon.

By the way, my battery has external lights that tell me not only the
charge status of the battery, but whether or not it is currently
charging. Power Statistics always claims that it is charging, even
though it is not charging most of the time.

[Bug 389886] [NEW] Gnome Chess 3D mode OpenGL errors on GMA950

2009-06-20 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Macbook2,1 with GMA950 chipset. Driver support for GMA950 in Linux is
generally poor - Fedora also has massive problems with this chipset.
However, it is a very common chipset.

I attempted to enable 3D mode and it told me 'No Python OpenGL support'
and 'No Python GTKGLExt support'. So I installed packages python-opengl
and python-gtkglext1. I then was able to enable 3D mode. Now Chess
sets up a window and immediately exits, without any warning. Running it
from Terminal gives the following output to stdout:

Notice Bug #71593 as well. My bug is not a duplicate of what bug 71593
is about, but someone at the bottom of that has recently reproduced the
bug that I'm getting.

[Bug 381884] [NEW] Appletouch touchpad driver produces jumpy two-fingered scrolling

2009-05-30 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

My system is: Linux richard-laptop 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri
Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux. However, this issue applies
to at least Intrepid and Jaunty, 32 and 64 bit, running on Apple Mac
hardware that uses an Appletouch touchpad. It has also been reported in
the Gentoo and Debian forums.

From what I can find on the Net, the Appletouch touchpad was first used
in February 2005 for the G4 aluminium PowerBook, and last used for the
4th generation Intel Macbook and Macbook Pro in early 2008. I would
appreciate it if someone could find out exactly which machines use the
Appletouch and modify this paragraph.

The issue is with two-fingered scrolling. The Appletouch features the
ability to detect two (or three) touches. OS X uses this feature to
enable scrolling, similar to a scrollwheel on a mouse.

The synaptics driver causes the simulated scrollwheel to start moving as
soon as one places a second finger on the touchpad. That is to say,
placing a second finger causes the trackpad driver to deliver scrolling
signals, which means that attempts at vertical scrolling feels jumpy, or
over sensitive.

There was an update to the OS X driver that fixed this situation for
Apple. I guess that it detects the second finger and programmatically
ignores the first few scrollticks, thereby 'deadening' the output. This
is what we need.

The synaptics driver allows for some modification, but not for
multitouch input. This needs to be fixed at source code level.

[Bug 381888] [NEW] AVG antivirus software causes system halt

2009-05-30 Thread Richard Cavell
Public bug reported:

Hello all,

I have downloaded and installed AVG Antivirus for Linux. I type:

sudo avgupdate
sudo avgscan /

AVG starts to scan my filesystem, reporting filenames as it goes.
Sometime during the scan, perhaps 15 or 45 minutes in, my computer
suddenly dies. The screen goes black, hard disks and fans stop
spinning, lights turn off. There's no warning whatsoever, no nice
system shutdown, etc.

I have a Macbook2,1 with 1 Gig RAM and plenty of hard disk space,
running on an ext3 partition. Intel Core 2 Duo, 64 bit 9.04 distro, CD
ROM drive with no disc in and no other drives mounted.

I can reproduce the crash reliably. However, it will not crash at the
same point. In fact, on one of my trials the computer crashed
immediately after AVG exited. I have proved the point by redirecting
the stdout to a file while AVG is running. AVG's output does not
produce any errors.

It is not due to the computer overheating. I have done a comprehensive
CPU burn test. My CPU fan works just fine.

I realise that this may be AVG's fault, but Ubuntu ought to capture the
fault and exit gracefully rather than just dying.

If you would like any of my system logs, or for me to do anything,
please ask.
