@xiscofauli In message #18, I did indicate that I tried the latest download at that time (2019-06-26). The source code still has the #ifdef LINUX logic which causes this timing issue. [Bug 1175882] Re: Hangs while modifying document (after completion of paste from Wep Page with Multiple Images)
I've had a similar issue with multiple versions of libreoffice-writer for at least 2 years. Currently, I am on Xubuntu 18.04.3.up-to-date; libreoffice-writer 1:6.0.7-0ubuntu0.18.04.9. My process: * I use xfce4-screenshooter (1.8.2-2, currently) to copy a portion of a chrome screen from a Coursera.org lecture to the Xfce clipboard. * Then, I attempt to paste it into my ODT document. These screenshot images are PNG when I save them first to the file system and then insert them into the document - cumbersome but always reliable. If the clipboard contains a small/medium image, the paste works fine. Beyond a certain size threshold (not large), the paste puts libreoffice- writer into a very long (closed?) loop. This does not happen on my spouse's Mac! (-: Sorry but I have no access at the moment to other distros/desktops for additional testing. Yes, I already tried a "latest" copy of libreoffice from their site with the same results. So, I am of the opinion that this is some sort of interface issue with Xfce, Gnome, or Gnu libraries. [Bug 1777285]
Yes, I have tried this with the latest download. This is an off-the- shelf Xubuntu 18.04.latest LTS desktop that I use primarily for Libreoffice, browsing, and Python development. I tend to stay with Ubuntu's packages including Libreoffice. Please see comment #9. The current source code has special #ifdef LINUX logic to fork the transaction into background and then immediately exit to the command line. It does not wait for the ODT file to be ready for use. Hence, any Linux/Unix bash command that references the ODT file will definitely fail with file not found. Workaround: sleep for 2/3 seconds before trying to access the ODT file. For Mac and Windows, the transaction takes place in foreground so that when soffice.bin exits to the O/S, the ODT file is guaranteed to be available for use. This is the desirable effect for all O/Ses. Why is there more concern with "blocking" in the Unix/Linux environments as opposed to Mac (Unix bash environment) and Windows? IMO, this is a bug for the Linux environment. There is no reason for special #ifdef LINUX logic. [Bug 1777285] Re: Batch libreoffice --convert-to offers no way to wait for document completion
The file /usr/bin/libreoffice is a soft link to soffice, a Bourne shell script. Inside the script, the soffice.bin executable is invoked. The source code indicates that soffice.bin is the one starting a background process that does not finish before soffice.bin exits. See: https://github.com/LibreOffice/core/blob/master/shell/source/unix/exec/shellexec.cxx Go to line 218: OString cmd = #ifdef LINUX // avoid blocking (call it in background) "( " + aBuffer.makeStringAndClear() + " ) &"; #else aBuffer.makeStringAndClear(); #endif FILE *pLaunch = popen(cmd.getStr(), "w"); if ( pLaunch != nullptr ) { if ( 0 == pclose( pLaunch ) ) return; It would be interesting to understand why for only Linux, the request is executed in background. Plug in my WD Elements USB drive. 2. I see the automount pop-up message and, yes, the contents are available for all access. 3. I use `grsync` version 1.2.6-1 to backup whatever needs to be backed up. 4. When completed, and I should not need to do this, in a terminal window, I execute `sync; sync; sync`. 5. With thunar, I click on the little triangle for the device which requests an eject. 6. I immediately see the "Writing data to device" pop-up message. 7. I wait 5 minutes. It is still there. I should see it replaced with "It's safe to remove ..." pop-up message. 8. My drive, while still plugged in, tells me that it is idle and in good state (periodic slow blinking white light). 9. Roughly, 30 minutes later, I see a new pop-up message: "Failed to eject ... Timeout was reached". The "Writing data to device" pop-up message is still there as well. 10. The "Failed to ..." pop-up message repeats again after a few more minutes. 11. Finally, I see another pop-up message: "Sorry, Ubuntu 18.04 has experienced an internal error" showing /usr/bin/thunar as the executable path, "crashed with SIGSEGV". My drive, while still plugged in, continues to tell me that it is still idle and in good state. [Bug 1777285] [NEW] Batch libreoffice --convert-to offers no way to wait for document completion
Public bug reported: Command-line: libreoffice --convert-to odt:writer8 myfile.txt The returned status code ($?) is zero. So far, so good. But, when I try to access the ODT file (E.g. copy it), it doesn't yet exist. Adding `sync; sync; sync` right after the libreoffice batch execution did not help. Adding --headless as an option did not help. If I sleep for a few seconds immediately after the libreoffice batch execution, then the file finally gets completed before a subsequent command references the ODT file. Sample script: ### Create somehow a file called myfile.txt rm myfile.odt somewhere-else.odt libreoffice --headless --convert-to odt:writer8 myfile.txt RC=$? if [ $RC -ne 0 ]; then echo '*** libreoffice conversion failed for myfile.txt' exit 86 fi #sleep 3 ls *.odt Result: ls: cannot access '*.odt': No such file or directory If one changes the above script so that the sleep is executed, then the ODT file is available. Observation: It appears that executing libreoffice in batch mode is somehow kicking off a separate process to finish the ODT file. The exit to the shell and the availability of the ODT file should be synchronized. Before 18.04, I never saw this behavior. [Bug 1754072] Re: Very poor performance with xserver-xorg-video-nouveau live bionic beta-1 session
** Description changed: - QA suspend test: - * Needed 10 minutes to get to unlock prompt. - * After unlocking, 2 minutes passed before desktop was visible. + Observations from using the Xubuntu bionic beta-1 (2018-03-06) + installation image on a USB stick. - I use the nouveau driver under 16.04 on the same machine and suspend- - return performance can be measured in seconds. Of course, that is a - native build, not a live session. + 1) Sometimes during a boot from the USB stick, the video (Nvidea) is + detected correctly and very quickly the expected first 2 screens appear + (Language, Install/Try menu). While this happens and on into the + installation or live session, performance is acceptable. + + 2) Sometimes during a boot from the USB stick, the video is not detected + correctly and an alternate screen set is presented. While this happens + and on into the installation or live session, performance is extremely + slow. + + Whether you get one or the other seems to be a matter of luck. [Bug 1536353] Re: [regression] Printer drivers install is broken as lsb package is not available anymore
Arup, All I did was add Ubuntu Trusty as a last-gasp APT repository in the list. That is how I was able to install the 14.04 lsb etc. when they did not exist in 16.04. Till is going to: 1 - Migrate the latest pre-16.04 lsb etc. to 16.04. 2 - Make sure that lsb_release.py reverts to reporting lsb modules instead of 'No LSB modules are available'. That version of lsb_release.py should be the latest pre-16.04 version. I'm going to be a guinea pig on two separate machines (dissimilar hardware running 16.04) to make sure that the fix (a) works as expected and (b) doesn't do anything unexpected (as best as I can). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1536353 Title: [regression] Printer drivers install is broken as lsb package is not available anymore To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-filters/+bug/1536353/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Work-around for everyone, I believe. I uninstalled my suggestion of message #16 and followed this myself. 1. Append the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list (E.g. sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list): deb http://cz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty main 2. sudo apt update; sudo apt install lsb 3. Go to http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/?OSC=LX 4. Enter your product name and "Linux" as the O/S. Click on the search sysmbol. Accept conditions and download the latest "printer driver" DEB file for your CPU architecture. Mine (XP-410) was the Epson Printer Utility for AMD64, dated 2016-04-12. 5. Install the downloaded DEB file (E.g. using gdebi). My gdebi installation log looked like this: Epson Printer Utility Driver for Linux This is a Printer Utility program for Epson Printer Driver. [Bug 1536353] Re: [regression] Printer drivers install is broken as lsb package is not available anymore
I cannot understand why Xenial (16.04) dropped lsb in the first place given how much dependency exists. However, I have tried two of the suggested solutions and the printer-driver-escpr package provides basic printing functions for my Epson XP-410 (I lucked out). I'll try to summarize this unhappy discussion: 1. Package printer-driver-escpr provides basic printer functions for some Epson printers but not all models. 2. Even when printer-driver-escpr succeeds, some Epson functions are missing (E.g. ink level inquiry). 3. Many (if not all) of the Epson site printer drivers are still dependent on lsb and its co-packages; customers have nearly zero leverage with Epson (I am still waiting for a 4-month-old request to them to stop using lsb functions). I have also called them and customer service "will get back to me". 4. There are other software (E.g. Google Earth) which needs lsb. My request regarding the lsb packages of 15.10: PLEASE put them back into 16.04. They might be "outdated" in some peoples opinion but the users are at the mercy of 3rd party vendors who see no profit in expending energy in this regard. [Bug 1556676] Re: In 14.04.04, r8169.ko cannot recover wired Ethernet connection after resume from suspend
Christopher, First of all, I am pleased that I no longer need work-arounds for this issue and the mouse-cursor disappearing. Apparently, both issues were addressed during or prior to 16.04. I always try to minimize the time spent by investigators to extract information that I supply. As a developer, that is also what I would want. You said that submitting tar files in compressed form makes it harder for folks to review the contents. Let us put the GUI approach aside. Look solely at the command line for extracting the contents of a tar-archive. 1. tar xvf something.tar (uncompressed) 2. tar xvfz something.tar.gz(gzip-compressed) As I implied in comment #30, to a developer who uses the command line regularly (E.g. me), #2 above is as simple as #1 above. Same level of effort. However, as I also said previously, I will be happy to only attach uncompressed tar-archives in the future. Maybe this is something we should have talked about on the phone or by email instead of in a bug report. As a developer, I understand that kernel developers are busy. I certainly appreciate the time that they have donated to the various Linux distributions. I also appreciate the time that you spend time looking at the bug reports. That is exactly why I acknowledged that "This issue is no longer present" and marked it "Fix Released" as quickly as I could so that you and others could shift attention elsewhere as soon as possible. My reporting this issue had the intention of highlighting an issue that people with a laptop who use the Ubuntu base might also run into in 14.04. I published a functional work-around so that (a) you and the kernel developers would know that I was not waiting for a fix and (b) another laptop user still on 14.04 could leverage the same work-around [if needed] by substituting the name of their Ethernet module for "r8169". -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1556676 Title: In 14.04.04, r8169.ko cannot recover wired Ethernet connection after resume from suspend To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1556676/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1556676] Re: In 14.04.04, r8169.ko cannot recover wired Ethernet connection after resume from suspend
Do not gzip tar files? Every file manager on every desktop automatically opens the folder for you- just double-click on the tar.gz file in the file manager. Using a command line, tar xvfz (added the 'z' for zipped) extracts the folder. Adding the 'z' is hard? But, if that is what you want, I will stop zipping tar files in the future. Using the lsb API was not my idea (long story) and I warned my partner that lsb would be gone in Ubuntu in 16.04. I could 16.04 in about 4 weeks when my project is live/stable and I have time to assemble another desktop from a Biostar/AMD motherboard. Sorry if that's inconvenient. Hopefully, xorg or xfce4 folks won't complain about a "duplicate report" [(-:]. I did file a separate report referencing my laptop hardware against xorg. Time will tell if it is xorg or xfce. I am tempted to try to reproduce this anomaly with a completely different 14.04.04 desktop (E.g. KDE) on the same hardware and see if the same symptoms occur. If so, then you are probably correct to suspect xorg (2 desktops, same xorg); else, it is probably an xfce issue. The practical problem with doing this is that the setup takes a lot of time and there could be other reasons why the issue is not reproducible under KDE. ~~ In case anyone reading this report might benefit, this is a fast manual work-around that works for my with an HP laptop: 1. [Bug 1559597] Re: [HP Pavilion dv3-1075us Laptop] Invisible cursor after resume from suspend in Xubuntu 14.04.04
I just discovered a much better work-around than logout-login: 1. Resume from a long-term suspend. Note the disappeared mouse cursor. 2. Ctrl-Alt-F1 ===> getty 3. Ctrl-Alt-F7 ===> back to desktop My mouse cursor is restored after step 3. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1559597 Title: [HP Pavilion dv3-1075us Laptop] Invisible cursor after resume from suspend in Xubuntu 14.04.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1559597/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1556676] Re: In 14.04.04, r8169.ko cannot recover wired Ethernet connection after resume from suspend
Christopher, I always use `ubuntu-bug` to create a report. However, until I saw your mail, I did not have the python-apport package installed. Maybe, since it is not very big, it should always be installed as part of *buntu base in case it is needed. Please let me know if anything else is needed. I do not mind unusual requests if needed.
