[Bug 902368] [NEW] gmt-coastline-download tries to download non-existant file

2011-12-09 Thread Richard Smith
Public bug reported:

The /usr/sbin/gmt-coastline-download script tries to download high or
full coastline data from a URL it generates on line 139-40:

  URL_HIGH=$SITE/GSHHS${VERSION}_high.tar.bz2
  URL_FULL=$SITE/GSHHS${VERSION}_full.tar.bz2

These URLs no longer work on most of the supported GMT mirrors,
including the one chosen by default by the script. Of all the mirrors
listed, only the washington.edu and u-tokai.ac.jp ones include the
relevant files. The minimal change is probably to change the default to
use one of these two mirrors. A proper fix should take into account the
fact that since (I think) version GSHHS 2.2.0, the file name has not
been capitalised and doesn't have a _high or _full suffix.

[Bug 366835] Re: in 9.04 for AMD64, nedit will not copy to clipboard

2010-08-27 Thread Richard Smith
@Paul Gevers: OK I will do that.

BTW The X crash reported in #38 probably wasn't caused by the
nedit/lesstif/Xorg problem.
I had the same behaviour without nedit running, and I had music playing every
time the crash occurred - it looks like pulseaudio may be causing it. Sorry
about the noise.

[Bug 332631] Re: pulseaudio errors, sound/audio bugs

2010-08-27 Thread Richard Smith
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid AMD64, Nvidia video driver, NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440
AGP 8x

This has happened a few times:
User1 on F8 console
User2 on F9 console
User2 playing streamed music in Firefox
 Switch to User1 on F8
   Music stops playing
   After around 30 sec:
   Screen blanks
   Drum roll
   Login screen, on F9
The previous X session on F9 has crashed out, all the
work on open windows gone.
I found the following log messages, but ultimately perhaps it is Xorg or nvidia
that should take responsibility for the X session crash?

/var/log/messages:

[Bug 625264] [NEW] mouse pointer trapped in a window

2010-08-27 Thread Richard Smith
Public bug reported:

Problems using nedit in Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64

Nedit works OK at first, then starts to malfunction.
Copy-paste by highlighting and middle-mouse click, or by menu, starts failing
to work within the same window.
Meanwhile, copy-pasting from elsewhere (eg xterm window) DOES work. On another
tab, everything seems normal.
Today I tried to close down the offending tab by right clicking on it. The
result was that the mouse pointer was trapped within the tabs bar.
All I could do then was CNRTL-ALT F1 to do a text login and kill nedit.
In fact the X session on console F7 crashed before I managed to kill nedit, but
that may be related to pulseaudio because I was playing music at the time.

Log message:

Aug 24 15:23:24 joseph kernel: [443474.418222] nedit[9190]: segfault at
2 ip 7fee622493d9 sp 7fff731f81e0 error 4 in
libXm.so.2.0.1[7fee6219+163000]

A static build of an older nedit with motif has the same problem with a
right-click on tabs with 10.04. Not a problem with 8.04.

The right-click on a tab problems is reported separately as a bug in lesstif,
but appears to be an Xorg problem.
See: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=543647
Looks like Redhat have a patch for this particular bug in Fedora, but judging
by reversions there, it has not been fixed upstream in Xorg.

[Bug 453493] Re: [Acer AOA150] hibernate/resume failure

2009-10-20 Thread Richard Smith
After dist upgrade on 20/10/09, same problem. But this time I had many
messages Failed to mount one or more of mount points listed in
/etc/fstab. Something new every day! Not sure if any of this helps, but
I keep getting the automatic bug reports, so I pass it back.

[Bug 453493] [NEW] [Acer AOA150] hibernate/resume failure

2009-10-16 Thread Richard Smith
Public bug reported:

Karmic NBR beta with updates to 15/10/09
chromium-browser running, wireless connection.
Hibernate apparently succeeded, but took a long time.
On re-starting, ran through bios, grub and login. Then showed the spotlight
splash screen but without horizontal progress bar, and stuck like that. Mouse
pointer responding, but no response to clicks or keyboard.
Had to power off with power button.
Bug report produced after re-start.

Automatic bug report sent

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous hibernate and prevented it from
resuming properly.

[Bug 357705] [NEW] fglrx No devices detected on Radeon Xpress 200M and Radeon Mobility X1400

2009-04-08 Thread Richard Smith
Public bug reported:

I have an ATi Radeon Mobility X1400 GPU (in my Thinkpad Z61m). In
Intrepid, I could use the fglrx driver without problems (and indeed the
open-source driver did not work). After upgrading to Jaunty, the fglrx
driver no longer works (reporting '(EE) No devices detected.').

'panaggio' on #ubuntu+1 experienced the same issue with a Radeon Xpress
200M (e too had experienced the open-source driver not working in
Intrepid). The Xorg.log from that run is attached.

This is a regression from Intrepid (which will undoubtedly cause
problems for people who are upgrading). The open-source -ati driver does
now work for both these cards in Jaunty, at least for myself and
panaggio, but only if the fglrx kernel module is /not/ loaded (that is,
if fglrx-kernel-source is not installed and thus not loaded by DKMS).
Otherwise, X locks up on start-up. I imagine this will cause lots of
Radeon users to decide there is no working accelerated driver for their
card after an upgrade...

[Bug 357705] Re: fglrx No devices detected on Radeon Xpress 200M and Radeon Mobility X1400

2009-04-08 Thread Richard Smith
I'm not interested in using fglrx now the -ati drivers are working,
but I think it's important that there's a clean and obvious upgrade path
for people who used fglrx for these cards in intrepid. It is not obvious
that one must uninstall the fglrx-kernel-source package to get a working
system.

Assuming that the X lockup is unavoidable, could the -ati driver detect
the fglrx kernel module is loaded, produce a useful message and bail out
rather than doing whatever it is that causes the system to lock up?
That'd at least give people a clue how to fix this issue...

[Bug 334066] Re: xorg is terribly slow after Intrepid - Jaunty upgrade

2009-04-07 Thread Richard Smith
I have an ATi Mobility X1400 GPU (Thinkpad Z61m) and I see the
following:

* The fglrx driver refuses to start, saying No screens found
* With the radeon / ati driver plus the 2.6.28 kernel, I get a hard lockup in X
shortly after it starts. My system responds to SysRq.
* Rolling back to the 2.6.27 kernel which I was using with intrepid, I have a
working X environment, but only if I disable Xinerama and DRI.
* With Xinerama enabled, using the radeon driver and a 2.6.27 kernel, I get a
segfault on X startup:

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xorg_backtrace+0x26) [0x4f1b66]

Saw signal 11. Server aborting.

I also got a similar segfault (slightly different backtrace mentioning
DRI) with 'Option DRI' in my xorg.conf -- but I can't be sure that
wasn't also triggered by Xinerama.

I'm attaching the failsafeX tarball from the segfaulting run.

The hard lockup in X I'm seeing is always just after the KWallet dialog

kind of composite event which is causing the lockup?

[Bug 287370] Re: sound completely gone even though volume is at full

2009-03-11 Thread Richard Smith
I am experiencing a loss of audio output regarding my Ubuntu Mini 9.
Perhaps the cause is similar to cherokee's, perhaps not. Bene and
Chidester, I suspect this issue is affecting more than a few, and I
believe it has something to do with attempting to install i386 packages
on the Mini's lpia system. My audio became disabled immediately after I
forced install of some i386 packages. It would be nice to be able to
fix the problem without a complete system restoration.

[Bug 249783] [NEW] Wrong message when sharing a root-owned folder

2008-07-18 Thread Richard Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-share

Ubuntu 8.04.1
nautilus-share 0.7.2-0ubuntu5
When a user with admin/sharing privileges attempts to share a root-owned folder
(eg /shared) he gets the message:
net usershare add: cannot share path/shared as we are restricted to only
sharing directories we own
The message suggests we ask admin to add usershare owner only = False to
smb.conf.
Throwing security away just to share 1 folder on 1 occasion? - Not a good idea.
What it should do is put up a sudo-password box and share the folder.
Failing that, the message should suggest gksudo nautilus to run nautilus as
root to share the folder.

[Bug 235638] Re: package linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-17-generic 2.6.24.12-17.36 failed to install/upgrade: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

2008-06-12 Thread Richard Smith
It is fairly common to have small /boot partitions at the start of a disk, so
the probability of kernel upgrades filling up /boot is significant.
Kernel upgrades should warn of this and offer to uninstall the oldest image to
make space?
The Ubuntu installer should warn if a /boot partition is too small?
I had the same problem with one of my 50MB /boot partitions. The upgrade error
messages did not indicate the problem, but those from sudo dpkg --configure
-a did.

[Bug 234055] Re: Hardy tkdesk crash on startup - workround

2008-05-29 Thread Richard Smith
Work-round is:
 sudo ln -s /usr/lib/itcl3.2 /usr/share/tcltk/.

To fix broken link to tkdesk documentation:
 sudo rm /usr/lib/tkdesk/doc
 sudo ln -s /usr/share/doc/tkdesk/tkdesk-doc /usr/lib/tkdesk/doc

Tkdesk is looking in the wrong place for itcl after the change in location of
tcl and tk in Hardy.
Could be that itcl should have been changed to match the tcltk changes?

Thanks for looking after tkdesk - a principal reason I use Ubuntu!

[Bug 234055] [NEW] Hardy tkdesk crashes on startup

2008-05-22 Thread Richard Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tkdesk

TKDESK 2.0-9 0
Dapper,Feisty versions were OK, but Hardy version (clean re-install of OS)
fails to start.

itcl.tcl is located in same place as for Dapper, and the location of tkdesksh
in the tkdesk script is correct, but I get:

Application initialization failed: Can't find a usable itcl.tcl in the
following directories:
/usr/share/tcltk/itcl3.2 /usr/lib/tkdesk/../lib/itcl3.2
/usr/lib/tkdesk/../library /usr/lib/tk
desk/../../library /usr/lib/tkdesk/../../itcl/library
/usr/lib/tkdesk/../../../itcl/library
This probably means that Itcl/Tcl weren't installed properly.
If you know where the Itcl library directory was installed,
you can set the environment variable ITCL_LIBRARY to point
to the library directory.

The tkdesk script seems to be using an older version of tkdesksh.
Please edit the third line of this script to point to the absolute
path and file name of tkdesksh. Both are usually located in the
same directory.

An alternative is also to modify your PATH environment variable to
list the directory where you installed Tkdesk 2.0b before
the one that contains the older tkdesksh.

The easiest method is of course to simply delete the old tkdesksh.

[Bug 133214] Re: [xpress 200m] doesn't load the gnome desktop

2007-09-04 Thread Richard Smith
I'm hitting this as well.

I've been tracking gutsy for a few months now and last night the upgrade
broke my Kubuntu desktop.

the kdm login screen is fine but once KDE starts to load the graphics go
really screwy. All the icons seem to be 10 times the normal size and I
only see a small portion of them, the base windows of the apps load but
the contents of the windows is blank. Although the apps appear to work
the (broken) drawing is really slow.

I have upgraded all my X packages from here

But the problem still exists.

Here's the contents of my xorg.conf which I generated with
