[Bug 338778] [NEW] Jaunty update breaks xorg on eee pc 900

2009-03-06 Thread Rick McBride
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

xserver-xorg-video-intel:
  Installed: 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu4
  Candidate: 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu4 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

since yesterday's update, xorg isn't starting correctly, gnome desktop
does not come up completely. I get a mostly blank desktop, with only the
icon for my removable media (sdhc in this case).

xorg log (and the gdm log) both reveal

[ 15.538927] (EE) intel(0): Mode 1280x1024 does not fit virtual size
1024x1024 - internal error

I notice that this error shows up in several bug reports in Intrepid.
Seems to have been introduced in this case as of a bunch of updates that
took place yesterday.

I've also sent a ubuntu-bug -p xserver-xorg-video-intel, however since I
can't get a xterm on the affected machine I couldn't associate it with
my LP ID.

I'll get this information ASAP. I'm out of town at a Sprint, and not yet
sure if I'll be able to ssh into the netbook in this environment. Once I
get set up for the day I'll know more.

[Bug 337501] [NEW] libcurl3-gnutls update appears to break https for apt-get

2009-03-03 Thread Rick McBride
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libcurl3-gnutls

Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

libcurl3-gnutls:
  Installed: 7.18.2-1ubuntu4.1
  Candidate: 7.18.2-1ubuntu4.1
  Version table:

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 7.18.2-1ubuntu4 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages

Today's security update to libcurl3-gnutls has broken the ability to update
package lists from deb sources of type/transport https.

after applying the update the following message is recieved on apt-get update
(or similar)
"W: Failed to fetch
https://someuser:/somepassw...@somesource.net/main/source/Sources.gz Protocol
https not supported or disabled in libcurl"

if you go to /var/cache/apt/archives/ and install the old
libcurl3-gnutls package, it will work again.

This is causing significant problem for projects/teams using https
protected PPAs

Ubuntu One is definitely still seeing problems with this, as Nicola
indicated above.

I don't know what the proper thing to do with the status is on this, but
I'm going to chime in with a "this isn't entirely fixed" opinion at this
point.

Prior to that I had been running late alpha-6 on the affected machine
without seeing this problem.

[Bug 416657] [NEW] [needs-packaging] zope deferredimport

2009-08-20 Thread Rick McBride
Public bug reported:

Often, especially for package modules, you want to import names for
convenience, but not actually perform the imports until necessary.
The zope.deferredimport package provided facilities for defining names
in modules that will be imported from somewhere else when used. You
can also cause deprecation warnings to be issued when a variable is
used.

[Bug 416669] [NEW] [needs-packaging] python zope.sendmail

2009-08-20 Thread Rick McBride
Public bug reported:

zope.sendmail is a package for email sending from Zope 3 applications.
Email sending from Zope 3 applications works as follows:

A Zope 3 application locates a mail delivery utility
(``IMailDelivery``) and feeds a message to it. It gets back a unique
message ID so it can keep track of the message by subscribing to
``IMailEvent`` events.

The utility registers with the transaction system to make sure the
message is only sent when the transaction commits successfully.
(Among other things this avoids duplicate messages on
``ConflictErrors``.)

If the delivery utility is a ``IQueuedMailDelivery``, it puts the
message into a queue (a Maildir mailbox in the file system). A
separate process or thread (``IMailQueueProcessor``) watches the queue
and delivers messages asynchronously. Since the queue is located in
the file system, it survives Zope restarts or crashes and the mail is
not lost. The queue processor can implement batching to keep the
server load low.

If the delivery utility is a ``IDirectMailDelivery``, it delivers
messages synchronously during the transaction commit. This is not a
very good idea, as it makes the user wait. Note that transaction
commits must not fail, but that is not a problem, because mail
delivery problems dispatch an event instead of raising an exception.

However, there is a problem -- sending events causes unknown code to
be executed during the transaction commit phase. There should be a
way to start a new transaction for event processing after this one is
commited.

An ``IMailQueueProcessor`` or ``IDirectMailDelivery`` actually
delivers the messages by using a mailer (``IMailer``) component that
encapsulates the delivery process. There currently is only one
mailer:

``ISMTPMailer`` sends all messages to a relay host using SMTP.

If mail delivery succeeds, an ``IMailSentEvent`` is dispatched by the
mailer. If mail delivery fails, no exceptions are raised, but an
`IMailErrorEvent` is dispatched by the mailer.

I've encountered this and mentioned it in a previous bug report.

a new Noscript feature, Application Boundary Enforcer (ABE) takes issue
with our collection of the local host name for the confirm Device Access
page. Turning that feature off solves the issue. No other aspect of
Noscript needs to be removed or turned off to make it work.

I did find the UI setting for that for the non-gnome xchat, and the

Aha! transparency was indeed set to 0.5, and then initially when I set
it to 0 it got set to some massively negative value. Setting zero again
let the app start, and I was able to turn transparency off.

[Bug 277693] Re: xchat-gnome crashes with "BadImplementation" on init

2009-01-06 Thread Rick McBride
the comment I replied to indicated this was a dupe of "277693" however
that's THIS defect...

Once I was pointed to gconf to check the setting that was indeed the
problem and xchat-gnome works once that setting is changed. Not sure
what the resolution of this bug is, or if further data is needed for
whatever this is supposed to be a dupe of...

[Bug 338778] [NEW] Jaunty update breaks xorg on eee pc 900

2009-03-06 Thread Rick McBride
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

xserver-xorg-video-intel:
  Installed: 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu4
  Candidate: 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu4 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

since yesterday's update, xorg isn't starting correctly, gnome desktop
does not come up completely. I get a mostly blank desktop, with only the
icon for my removable media (sdhc in this case).

xorg log (and the gdm log) both reveal

[ 15.538927] (EE) intel(0): Mode 1280x1024 does not fit virtual size
1024x1024 - internal error

I notice that this error shows up in several bug reports in Intrepid.
Seems to have been introduced in this case as of a bunch of updates that
took place yesterday.

I've also sent a ubuntu-bug -p xserver-xorg-video-intel, however since I
can't get a xterm on the affected machine I couldn't associate it with
my LP ID.

[Bug 337501] [NEW] libcurl3-gnutls update appears to break https for apt-get

Today's security update to libcurl3-gnutls has broken the ability to update
package lists from deb sources of type/transport https.

after applying the update the following message is recieved on apt-get update
(or similar)
"W: Failed to fetch

if you go to /var/cache/apt/archives/ and install the old

This is causing significant problem for projects/teams using https

When I do that

OK. I suspected as much. I'm afraid something else may be wrong then, as
Phil Fibiger reported the same error with that exact branch...

[Bug 352154] Re: ssh-agent stops responding

2009-03-31 Thread Rick McBride
this started happening to me about the time I upgraded to jaunty beta.
Prior to that I had been running late alpha-6 on the affected machine
without seeing this problem.

[Bug 337501] [NEW] libcurl3-gnutls update appears to break https for apt-get

2009-03-03 Thread Rick McBride
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libcurl3-gnutls

Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

libcurl3-gnutls:
  Installed: 7.18.2-1ubuntu4.1
  Candidate: 7.18.2-1ubuntu4.1
  Version table:
 *** 7.18.2-1ubuntu4.1 0
500 http://security.ubuntu.com intrepid-security/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 7.18.2-1ubuntu4 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages

Today's security update to libcurl3-gnutls has broken the ability to update
package lists from deb sources of type/transport https.

after applying the update the following message is recieved on apt-get update
(or similar)
"W: Failed to fetch
https://someuser:/somepassw...@somesource.net/main/source/Sources.gz Protocol
https not supported or disabled in libcurl"

if you go to /var/cache/apt/archives/ and install the old
libcurl3-gnutls package, it will work again.

This is causing significant problem for projects/teams using https
protected PPAs

[Bug 338778] [NEW] Jaunty update breaks xorg on eee pc 900

2009-03-06 Thread Rick McBride
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

xserver-xorg-video-intel:
  Installed: 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu4
  Candidate: 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu4 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

since yesterday's update, xorg isn't starting correctly, gnome desktop
does not come up completely. I get a mostly blank desktop, with only the
icon for my removable media (sdhc in this case).

xorg log (and the gdm log) both reveal

[ 15.538927] (EE) intel(0): Mode 1280x1024 does not fit virtual size
1024x1024 - internal error

I notice that this error shows up in several bug reports in Intrepid.
Seems to have been introduced in this case as of a bunch of updates that
took place yesterday.

I've also sent a ubuntu-bug -p xserver-xorg-video-intel, however since I
can't get a xterm on the affected machine I couldn't associate it with
my LP ID.

I'll get this information ASAP. I'm out of town at a Sprint, and not yet
sure if I'll be able to ssh into the netbook in this environment. Once I
get set up for the day I'll know more.
