[Bug 1904102] [NEW] Upgrade from 5.4.0-52 to 5.4.0-53 lost 2.5gbe ethernet on B550 board

2020-11-12 Thread Rob van der Linde
Public bug reported:

I was running Ubuntu 20.04 on a B550 motherboard.

I believe the 2.5gb ethernet is actually only in newer kernels normally
but Ubuntu backport it.

It was working fine, then I received a kernel upgrade 5.4.0-53 and the
ethernet dissapeared.

If I use grub to boot into the old kernel 5.4.0-52 the ethernet is there
still so it appears to be the newer kernel.

[Bug 1774429] Re: Unable to install pgpool2 in Ubuntu 18.04

2018-11-28 Thread Rob van der Linde
We also needed pgpool2 in bionic so I decided to try to compile it from
the 18.10 source package found here:

https://packages.ubuntu.com/source/cosmic/pgpool2

It compiled without any issues, built into 4 binary debs, which I
installed on 18.04

It works well, I think these packages should be built on 18.04 and
pushed into backports.

Who can make that happen? if 18.04 is going to be supported for 10
years, we really want pgpool2 in the backports repository if possible.

[Bug 1662097] Re: intel cpu microcode package killed my laptop

2017-02-06 Thread Rob van der Linde
It appears to be a kernel issue as the system now boots when booting the
previous 14.04 kernel from before the upgrade, but hangs when booting
the 16.04 kernel with flashing capslock LED again, kind of like
described here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/303276

The strange thing is that the 16.04 kernel only started playing up when
the intel microcode package was installed, so I am going to try to
uninstall it, boot the 16.04 kernel and see what that does.

[Bug 1662097] [NEW] intel cpu microcode package killed my laptop

2017-02-06 Thread Rob van der Linde
Public bug reported:

Had a working system, just upgraded it to Kubuntu 16.04, everything
great after the upgrade.

The driver tool then "recommended" me to install this CPU microcode
package, after that the laptop failed to boot the kernel and the caps
lock is flashing.

Laptop is a lenovo t500 core 2 duo with 8gb RAM, I just can't seem to
boot the laptop at all anymore since installing this CPU microcode
package.

My question is, is it really such a good idea to "recommend" this
package under drivers if it can kill your system like this?

[Bug 603128] Re: python-magic is incomplete on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS?

2014-01-27 Thread Rob van der Linde
I had quick a look inisde the Ubuntu 12.04 package for python-magic and
it definitely appears to be the same library as on pip, it's just a very
old version which doesn't appear to be very useful at all, also it's not
versioned correctly, it has the same version as libmagic (5.09-2) but it
should really by 0.4.6 if the latest from pip was to be packaged.

[Bug 603128] Re: python-magic is incomplete on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS?

2014-01-27 Thread Rob van der Linde
Seems to be broken on Ubuntu 12.04 and 13.10 and possibly all versions
between that.

Not sure what is up with this, is this actually a different library than
"pip install python-magic" will install???

>>> import magic
>>>
>>>
>>>
>>> magic.from_buffer
>>>
>>>
>>>
Traceback (most recent call last):

  File "", line 1, in

AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'from_buffer'

Also I noticed the version is completely wrong it's like version 5.04
when python-magic on pip is 0.4.6, what is up with that?

https://pypi.python.org/pypi/python-magic/

Unfortunately I need this package desperately, so I am going to have to
package it up myself and bump up the version of the package, even though
it's wrong, so that it will overinstall the broken python-magic package.

[Bug 585657] Re: Transfering large files to nfs mount causes system freeze

2014-01-21 Thread Rob van der Linde
The systems I am running are also Ubuntu 13.10 and the 3.11 kernel.

This bug is a quite annoying, as every time I copy a file to my server
over NFS, the client doing the copying will stall/freeze for a few
seconds at the end of the copy and lock up Nautilus/Dolphin for a few
seconds and then wake up again. I have been considering going back to
SSHFS as NFS in it's current state is almost unusable with all that
stalling.

I don't know if this is a bug that has resurfaced on Ubuntu 13.10 /
kernel 3.11, or if this is actually a new bug that needs to be opened.

[Bug 585657] Re: Transfering large files to nfs mount causes system freeze

2014-01-18 Thread Rob van der Linde
I am experiencing the same issue as described in comment #47 on Ubuntu
13.10

Both server and client are Ubuntu 13.10, copying from server to client
does not cause lockups, but copying to the server will cause Dolphin to
lockup until the copy is complete.

I am not sure if this is a new issue or an old bug coming back, if this
has been marked as fixed in older versions of Ubuntu, yet the problem
still seems to persist in 13.10.

[Bug 254978] Re: [needs-packaging] Panda3D graphics engine

2012-06-13 Thread Rob van der Linde
They do already have debs yes, however the problem we have always
experienced at work over the years, is that when a newer version of
Ubuntu comes out they won't build the current stable version of Panda 3D
for that newer version for a quite some time. In the end, we usually
have to end up installing one for an older version of Ubuntu, which may
or may not work, this isn't cool.

I am going to look if it is possible to build Panda3D wihout fmodex.

[Bug 254978] Re: [needs-packaging] Panda3D graphics engine

2012-06-13 Thread Rob van der Linde
Sorry I meant "fmodex", and the license of this library is not really
open source compatible from what I can see, which might be half the
problem why Panda3D is not in the repository now.

Fmod have a non-commercial license which is restrictive, the library
comes as pre-compiled .so files without source, and some header files to
use the library, that is all.

I think one of the problems might be that this requires fmod to compile,
which isn't an open source license. It appears that the Panda 3D
Launchpad team have packaged up fmoxex, but it may be a binary only
package.

I want to look into packaging this if it's cool, I am proficient with

I have done my own .deb packaging and also package our own software at

I will look into building some packages at work tomorrow and see how it
goes, I might need some help in getting started though, as I have never

[Bug 829086] Re: Artifacts in 3D with Sandy Bridge

2011-11-10 Thread Rob van der Linde
Yes, intel-gpu-tools in both Natty and Oneiric doesn't work from the
repository (you get the error - Couldn't map MMIO region: No such file
or directory). Compiling intel-gpu-tools from source is one option, but
I also found a PPA that works, and you can also just download the .deb
without adding the PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~sarvatt/+archive/intel-gpu-tools

For those people that are still experiencing some artifacts, I have been
playing around with the "sudo intel_reg_write 0x9404 0x1800" fix most of
the afternoon and have come to find that it matters when you run this
command. This command must be run before any 3D happens, if you have
already had the artifacts and then run the command it will not fix it,
even if you restart your 3D application. It appears once the graphics
card is in this "state" already, the fix won't work.

You must run the command just after you started the computer, when there
have been no artifacts or 3D yet. Because the command has to be run as
root (and it doesn't seem to matter if you run it before X starts), I
have found the perfect place to place this line is in the /etc/rc.local
file, just before the "exit 0" line. Since /etc/rc.local is executed by
root, you don't have to put sudo in front either.

[Bug 829086] Re: Artifacts in 3D with Sandy Bridge

2011-11-10 Thread Rob van der Linde
We got an email back from Intel, the issue was fixed in Keith's drm-
intel-next kernel branch and heading upstream.

Apparently it's a clock gating issue on Sandybridge.

As a temporary fix, if you have intel-gpu-tools, you can run:

sudo intel_reg_write 0x9404 0x1800

For me it seems to have fixed the issue, I am running our software
through a test now and so good so far.

For reference, the two commits are:

Date: Mon Nov 7 16:07:05 2011 -0800

drm/i915: Turn on another required clock gating bit on gen6.

rather not go through the same debug cycle on whatever testcases those
   might be.

[Bug 829086] [NEW] Artifacts in 3D with Sandy Bridge

2011-08-18 Thread Rob van der Linde
Public bug reported:

I am experiencing serious artifacts with the Sandy Bridge graphics card
when doing 3D. Because we are trying to use this card at work, I have
been testing this card for the last 2 months trying to get it to work
with no luck, so I have done quite a lot of testing towards this and
have found nothing so far that fixes this issue.

This bug seems to happen to certain parts of the 3D scene only, it
happens with our software quite badly which uses Panda 3D (I will attach
a screenshot), but it is not limited to Panda 3D or our software at all
because it also happens with Extreme Tux Racer if you look closely at
the trees when you pause the game (I have taken a screenshot of this
too).

What you will notice is a pattern of dots (artifacts) in certain areas
of the 3D scene, also the dots flicker like snow, which the screenshots
cannot show exactly. I have marked the areas that have artifacts in
Extreme Tux Racer in red, but in the screenshot of our software it is so
bad I don't even need to mark this.

I am using Ubuntu Natty 32 bit, I have tried the following:

* Intel drivers supplied with natty (2.14) and mesa supplied with natty (7.10.2)
* Cutting edge Intel drivers and mesa 7.12 prerelease from Xorg edgers
* Intel drivers 2.15 from various PPA's with Mesa 7.11 GIT pre-release
* Intel drivers 2.15, Linux 3.0, Mesa 7.11 final release from Michael Kuhn PPA
* Linux 3.0, Mesa 7.11 final from Michael Kuhn PPA + latest Intel 2.16 drivers
from Xorg edgers
* Both HD2000 and HD3000 model CPUs do it (both Core i3)
* I have experimented with turning different settings on and off using driconf,
but it still happens

I have also tried to install Oneiric Alpha 3 32 bit, but the desktop CD
crashes half way during the install, the alternative CD crashes during
the install when it asks for the language because it doesn't like USB
keyboards, and the server CD also crashes, before it can even start, so
I cannot install Oneiric at this point to test it.

[Bug 656745] Re: notebook crashes on battery with particular wlan or other pcie devices enabled (dell vostro 3700, asus, medion, acer and others)

2011-05-09 Thread Rob van der Linde
I tried Ubuntu 11.04 amd64 on my Vostro 3700 and the problem still
persists, also you cannot uninstall pm-utils to put on pm-utils 1.3,
because that will also remove gdm and many other pakages. I have not
found a workaround yet, installing laptop-mode-tools does not fix the
problem, and neither does adding pcie_aspm=off to grub and running
update-grub.

I am dissapointed to see this bug carry over to another version of
Ubuntu, I am really hoping this bug will be fixed with Ubuntu 11.10, as
it affects so many people with laptops purchased in the last year or so.

[Bug 448533] Re: Banshee (sometimes) freezes on start playing

2009-11-27 Thread Rob van der Linde
I think it has to do with the size of your library. I have a large
media library of 6000+ and Banshee 1.5 freezes really bad when you start
playing, add items to the play list, and other such actions introduces
the freezing. The music will keep playing, but the GUI freezes, it is
actually really really annoying. This bug was introduced in Banshee 1.5

[Bug 367214] [NEW] utils.calculate_cloud can leave font_size unset for most frequent tag

2009-04-26 Thread Rob van der Linde
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-django-tagging

This is a long standing issue on Google Code, issue 91:

http://code.google.com/p/django-tagging/issues/detail?id=91

This issue has been reported on Google Code quite some time ago, and
although there has been a patch available for well over a year, the
patch just doesn't seem to get applied. Without this patch, many
websites written in Django will often crash when generating a tag cloud,
because the font_size field does not always get set, and this does seem
to happen quite a lot.

I am not sure why this patch has not been applied for so long, maybe the
upstream author will need to be contacted about this.

I have created a package myself with this patch applied in my own PPA
should anyone need it for the time being:

[Bug 285660] [NEW] Hard drive light goes on every time cursor keys pressed in message

2008-10-18 Thread Rob van der Linde
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When I am editing a message in Evolution in Intrepid, and I hold the
cursor keys down on the keyboard to move in the document, the hard drive
light goes crazy.

The hard drive light goes on every time I move the cursor one position
up, down, left or right. So holding one of the arrows down, makes it go
flat tack.

I have plenty of RAM, so it should not really be using the hard drive
for this.

[Bug 264191] Re: python-django FFe for 1.0

2008-09-03 Thread Rob van der Linde
Django 1.0 has been released now. It would be really good if it will
make it into the Intrepid repository. Django 0.96 is very old and hardly
anyone uses it anymore. Even before Django 1.0's release, a lot of
people were using the SVN because of how old 0.96 was getting. It makes
very little sense to bundle 0.96 anymore, and if possible should really
push for 1.0 in Intrepid.

[Bug 198267] Re: wireless rt61pci driver buggy in Hardy alpha (only 1Mbit/s) - used to be fine on Gutsy

2008-06-25 Thread Rob van der Linde
Update:

After reboot, I got 1 mbps again, first I tried:

sudo ifdown -a
sudo ifup -a

Nothing happened at all, network manager didnt even seem to bring the
link down at all typing the ifdown command, but then again I have had
loads of issues with network manager both in gutsy and hardy, both for
wireless and wired networks, I don't really trust that app it seems a
bit flakey still.

Anyway, so I tried clicking on my wireless connection again, network
manager reconnected to my network, and I got full speed again after the
reconnect.

After a reboot I seem to have to simply click on my network to reconnect
to get full speed, as it seems to still start at 1 mbits after a reboot.
easily solved with a reconnect but shouldn't really be necessary.

[Bug 198267] Re: wireless rt61pci driver buggy in Hardy alpha (only 1Mbit/s) - used to be fine on Gutsy

2008-06-25 Thread Rob van der Linde
Yes, the linux-backports-modules-hardy-generic package fixed this
problem for me to

I purchased an Edimax EW-7608Pg wireless PCMCIA card using the rt61pci
driver, before installing the backports modules I got 1mbps connection
and the link light would not light up, only the activity light, but it
did work.

After installing the backports modules and rebooting I am getting full
speed now and the link light is now up.

Thank you.

[Bug 238823] Re: [MASTER] Firefox 3 RC1: color (grey) used for urls in the awesome bar make them hard to read in multiple themes (human, etc.)

2008-06-19 Thread Rob van der Linde
Wass: it looks like the bug didn't get fixed for Firefox 3 final, which
saddens me as it was really so easy to revert. The bug also affects the
Windows version of Firefox 3.

Although they may have only seen this bug as cosmetic, what really makes
this bug so important are older LCD monitors. At course we have older
LCD monitors and we have to remember that on older LCD monitors, it is
much harder to distinguish between light grey and white, basically you
cannot read the text at all on these monitors as it just appears white.

For now all you can do is apply the userChrome patch, both on Linux and
Windows versions of Firefox 3, go into your Firefox user profile
directory, then sub-directory chrome, and place the userChrome.css file
attached by helios91940

[Bug 238791] Re: New Firefox 3 RC1 update lines on dropdown address bar are now really light since BETA 5

2008-06-10 Thread Rob van der Linde
I've taken screenshots of both Human and Clearlooks in BETA 5 using the
Hardy Live CD, and then again of both themes in RC1 when Firefox 3 is
updated via the repositories, and put them in one image for side by side
comparison.

There definitely is a difference between RC1 and BETA 5 as the
screenshots show, even in Human, but it's most noticeable in Clearlooks
as it's at the lines appear at their lightest there.

Should it not be considered looking at anyway, I mean Clearlooks is the
default Gnome theme, every Linux distro has Clearlooks on it, and a lot
of people who do not like brown are going to choose Clearlooks as their
theme anyway right after they installed Ubuntu, since it's pre-installed
in Hardy, and currently in RC1 the entire dropdown looks like one white
slab with no divider lines, especially on older LCD's where you cannot
distinguish between light grey and white.

The only other way out, would be a userChrome.css hack otherwise.

[Bug 238791] Re: New Firefox 3 RC1 update lines on dropdown address bar are now really light since BETA 5

2008-06-10 Thread Rob van der Linde
I am using the default Firefox theme, just the Clearlooks GTK theme
instead of Human, which is well a fairly commonly used theme and it's
there by default in Gnome.

I will have to create a screenshot tomorrow from the Hardy Live CD,
switching the GTK theme to Clearlooks and this time using Firefox 3 BETA
5, since this is on the Live CD, saves me having to revert my machine to
the old version.

I can agree it's not much of a bug, it's cosmetic, but it wasn't there
in BETA 5, I think the old version worked better with the Clearlooks GTK
theme, and possibly other GTK themes.

[Bug 238791] [NEW] New Firefox 3 RC1 update lines on dropdown address bar are now really light since BETA 5

2008-06-10 Thread Rob van der Linde
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Ever since upgrading from Firefox 3 BETA 5 to Firefox 3 RC1 via the
repositories, I noticed a bug in the rendering of the address bar drop
down.

The horizontal lines in between addresses are suddenly extremely light
and almost not visible at all. I am using the standard Firefox theme
and Clearlooks GTK theme, so nothing unusual. This bug happened as soon
as upgrading to the new version via the standard Ubuntu repository.

[Bug 202068] Re: imagemagick dependency error in Hardy: should install libmagick9

2008-05-25 Thread Rob van der Linde
Sorry for the comment pollution, but you can still work around this
issue by manually downloading the libmagick9 deb file, I found here on
launchpad:

i386:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/i386/libmagick9/7:6.2.4.5.dfsg1-2ubuntu1

amd64:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/amd64/libmagick9/7:6.2.4.5.dfsg1-2ubuntu1

The status of the packages (in the left) says "deleted", so I would best
grab them quick if you need them. Install with "sudo dpkg -i

[Bug 194919] Re: libopenal needs replacement

2008-03-15 Thread Rob van der Linde
I agree with this as well, at the moment many games make horrible
crackly sound on anything but Creative Labs sound cards, at the moment
there are two workarounds:

 - Get a Creative sound card (But not the X-Fi which isn't Linux
compatible yet)

 - Manually compile the OpenAL software drivers, and stick with your
previous sound card

OpenAL has been broken like this for a few releases of Ubuntu now, it's
been like this far too long, com'on let's fix this issue :)

[Bug 202706] [NEW] MySQL 5.0.51 (in hardy) is a broken release, and return wordpress posts in the wrong order

2008-03-15 Thread Rob van der Linde
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server-5.0

I have an existing website running on Wordpress, I moved it from an Edgy
to a new Hardy server and post were shown in reverse order.

I have posted about the issue on the Wordrpess forums, and other people
are having this issue too. The wordpress forum moderators say MySQL
5.0.51 is broken, here is the sticky post:

http://wordpress.org/support/topic/154622?replies=15

This looks like a serious issue, and I hope we can still push a new
version of MySQL before Hardy gets released, it will be a real shame to
see Hardy getting shipped with a broken version of MySQL.

** Affects: mysql-dfsg-5.0 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 202068] [NEW] imagemagick dependency error in Hardy: should install libmagick9

2008-03-13 Thread Rob van der Linde
Public bug reported:

I installed php5-imagemagick on Hardy development branch and ran PHP
from the command line:

php

and got the following error:

PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library
'/usr/lib/php5/20060613+lfs/imagick.so' - libWand.so.9: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0

I had to manually install libmagick9 from the repository, but really,
when installing the imagemagick package, libmagick9 should have been
automatically installed as a dependency which it didn't.
