[Bug 797868] Re: NetworkManager crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_instance_get_private()

2011-11-26 Thread Robert D. Martin
I just discovered that the error message in question here appeared when
I changed the name of a not yet well functioning (the mainboard)
ethernet connection, but the message did not appear when I changed the
name of the actually well functioning/defined and in use ethernet
connection (a PCI adapter ethernet connection).

Is that perhaps a significant differentiation?

[Bug 834077] Re: unity-2d-panel crashed with SIGSEGV

2011-10-22 Thread Robert D. Martin
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 3.0.0-9-generic #15-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 30 15:03:37 UTC 2011 i686
athlon i386 GNU/Linux

The above info shows that despite my PC having an AMD64 cpu I opted to
this time use the 32 bit version of the live DVD iso (well, I burned it
onto a DVD at least, should the iso be in fact the one that fits onto a
CD as well - I'm not sure which one I've got running here).

I figure I'll try using the 64 bit iso version next to see if the same crash
then occurs.
My actions leading up to the crash...: booted the PC with the live-DVD as shown
above in place within the DVD drive. While busy defining the eth0 wired
network connection (it was not as yet properly defined) an already known crash
occurred in the 2D unity gui. I delayed clicking on the report error button
of the crash message window until I had gotten the network up and running for
internet access. I then clicked on that button with the result that Firefox
was launched so as to access Launchpad. Meanwhile I had opened (with
LibreOffice's swriter)
an odt file. During my Launchpad usage the crash involving LibreOffice
occurred.

[Bug 354228] Re: package python2.6-minimal 2.6.1-1ubuntu8 failed to install/upgrade:

2009-04-03 Thread Robert D. Martin
Python3 installed under jaunty for me just now without a hitch. So at
least if the upgrade from Intrepid to Jaunty has been completed then
Python3 is available / installable thereafter under jaunty.

As I recall, my upgrade from intrepid to jaunty also entailed problems
with the installation of python 2.6 being in conflict with the then
standard use of python 2.5. That problem got corrected in the course of
jaunty being upgraded daily (my common practice).

[Bug 347429] [NEW] paragraph marks; finding replacing displays Removing Line Breaks

2009-03-23 Thread Robert D. Martin
Public bug reported:

I do believe that the help function of previous OOo versions did,

[Bug 335567] Re: jockey-backend crashed with IOError: [Errno 19] No such device

2009-03-11 Thread Robert D. Martin
I, too, had just activated the Nvidia 96.43.10 driver in anticipation of
starting Baldur's Gate under PlayOnLinux. I think though that the error
message first came after I mistakenly tried to start the game via
clicking on the starter icon while yet having forgotten to first insert
the Baldur's Gate DVD into the DVD drive.

I thus got the impression that the DVD not being in the drive had caused
or provoked the error message.

Btw I had only just dist-upgraded beforehand. Thus this occurred under the
ubuntu Linux on x86/x86_64,
linux-image-2.6.28-9.29-generic. Maybe I should have restarted ubuntu after
activating the Nvidia driver before trying to start the game.

[Bug 121341] Re: python modules need to work during dist-upgrades

2009-02-27 Thread Robert D. Martin
Please notice the mention of nevow (and of twitsted) within the
following quote of status/error messages sent during a recent re-try at
installing python2.6 undertaken after a dist-upgrade for ubuntu9.04
jaunty jackolope failed, which I at first (I know assume, mistakenly)
thought to have been caused by faulty coding within the python2.6
package.

[quote]
Richte python2.6-minimal ein (2.6.1-0ubuntu8) ...
Linking and byte-compiling packages for runtime python2.6...
/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/twisted/web/microdom.py:181: SyntaxWarning:

/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/numpy/lib/tests/test_io.py:68: SyntaxWarning:

  assert(c.readlines(),
Compiling /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/nevow/context.py ...
SyntaxError: ('invalid syntax',
('/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/nevow/context.py', 37, 12, 'def
with(self, tag):\n'))
[/quote]

Having in the meanwhile noticed several mentions upstream of nevow
causing trouble for upgrades due to a self-reference within its
installation procedures, whereby building the nevow software required
access to its already built self in order to get itself built.

(see for example
http://allmydata.org/trac/tahoe/ticket/455
http://bugs.python.org/setuptools/issue20
http://divmod.org/trac/ticket/2699
http://allmydata.org/trac/tahoe/ticket/530
http://bugs.python.org/setuptools/issue57)

The nevow build process includes a self-reference; the code being carried out
to build python2.6 contains a tautology. Might not that be the actual cause of
the self-reference and thus of the build problems not only of nevow itself
but also of the packages such as python2.6 dependent upon it for their own
build?
_
I see no way to attach text files to this report at the moment, so I will
include here inline the following four textual records of the messages
displayed pertinent to my attempts to finally complete the dist-upgrade without
leaving out any but the python2.6 packages. That effort eventually seemed to
me to succeed, which initially got me believing that the python2.6 package had
caused the problems. But that was before I caught onto the nevow problems
upstream.

it now seems obvious to me that possibly not python2.6 itself be at
fault but, of course, twisted and / or nevow, be the troublemakers.
At any rate, neither the python2.6 package itself nor that software, as
such, need be at fault, were the installation software, itself, to be
the culprit here.

(s.attachment) even today, Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, having updated the
.deb package of my PC I receive the same warning about python2.6 as
shown in the attachment, namely, that a tautology be present within the

I therefore removed python2.6 as well as python-all in order to keep my
PC running well. gdm-new, which I had intended to try using I had
already removed due to its installation including the defective

Sorry. I only just came to realise, that eventually the specific

repository to have a python2.6 package containing faulty code.

I was using

ftp:://ftp.fu-berlin.de/linux/ubuntu

in particular I suspect that the python2.6 package have been downloaded
from out of

http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-desktop/ppa/ubuntu

there.

evolution-alarm-notify crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()) I had not
even started evolution nor was I in the process at the time the error
alarm sounded of updating anything.

That, of course, made me curious as to how evolution came to be at all
active, let alone produce an error alarm.

I discovered that I have had checked as active the automatic alerting to
personal calendar events and/or birthdays recorded within evolution's
calendar.

I have, however, never made any entries within the calendar.

Since a strlen() error is mentioned, might not the problem be precisely
the above situation ... i.e. strlen() = zero or perhaps null??

I had during my search at first intended to deactivate whatever
automatic functions might have produced the error. I reinstated those
two processes, however, in order to await the same error eventually
occurring again. If so I hope to thus have confirmed my suspicion for
you.

Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04

Info to ubuntu
Vielen Dank für Ihr Interesse an Ubuntu 8.10, dem Intrepid Ibex
(»unerschrockener Steinbock«) — veröffentlicht im Oktober 2008.

(??? is it normal for Intrepid Ibex to be indicated here, though I
upgraded to jaunty?)

When I started the update-manager this morning expecting to carry out my
habitual daily upgrade of the OS, an error message appeared stating that the
packages cache be damaged. I therefore ended the update-manager and opened a
terminal from which per sudo to use apt-get to check, update and then upgrade
everything.

the message pertaining to python3.0 3.0-rc1+20081027-0ubuntu1 then
appeared ...:

package python3.0 3.0~rc1+20081027-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade:
Versuche, ?/usr/lib/python3.0/lib-dynload/_pickle.so? zu ?berschreiben,
welches auch in Paket python3.0-minimal ist

My assumption: the cache got somehow damaged independently of any
correlation to the specific package that as a result could not get
updated/installed, in this case python(...). I am guessing that I need
to use dpkg somehow to re-create the cache as a whole or something, but
just in case I be in error I am sending this python related error
message along.

After trying...:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get update

I then tried...:
sudo apt-get upgrade

...which resulted in the following messages...:

Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig
Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut
Lese Status-Informationen ein... Fertig

Do I guess right that the intrepid version be being somehow considered
the proper current version with the result that the jaunty version be
considered uninstallable?

Please note that I am using the OpenOffice.org Version 3 under jaunty,
which I download and install however from out of the intrepid
repository...:

Does that somehow cause a mix-up resulting in the above problem?

OK... after the above measures were taken, I was able to use synaptic
to install the python3 package...:

python3.0 (Version 3.0~rc1+20081027-0ubuntu1) wird auf die Version
3.0~rc3-0ubuntu3 aktualisiert

and in the aftermath to then install first one then the newest mono
packages. Apparently, everything (?) is now okay, at least as far as
synaptic be concerned.

Unless there be other matters involved here of which I am not aware,
please therefore consider this case to have become solved.

Sorry to have troubled you.

[Bug 61340] Re: Alacarte emptied my Applications menu list.

2008-09-27 Thread Robert D. Martin
ok, I can confirm that my own ~/.config/menus/applications.menu existing
but being currently empty indeed leads to alacarte terminating.

I wish to report a possible cause though for the emptiness.

Topic: system defaults changed via the context menu of the nautilus file
manager.

Namely, I discovered that in the aftermath of my installing 7z (the
windows version of which I had become especially enamored of during my
days as Win98SE user) apparently inadvertently (?) the system default
for the procedure with which normally directories were to be opened was
changed from open ordner to 7z.

(Similarly, I discovered the normal way to handle profiles and other
simple text files had inadvertently become changed across the board from
using a simple text editor to using swriter of the OpenOffice.org office
software. )

As an Ubuntu8.10 user, I have routinely had admin rights. Sudo has
been ever again necessary to perform some actions. Not so within
nautilus' context menu.

Why do I mention this within this context? Well, not only was that
applications menu empty, but the Places links within the main menu
(personal directory, Desktop etc) were for some time dysfunctional at my
PC. After I discovered that bit about 7z and had changed the normal
usage in opening directories back to open directory, then suddenly,
those Places links immediately worked normally again.

Might not the malfunctioning of the opening of directories during the
time when 7z was unhappily as the system wide norm associated with
opening directories have been the cause (or part of it) of the above-
described emptying of the applications menu?

For if alacarte tries to open the directory with some normal editor with
its own success / failure flagging and instead that attempt results in
7z getting called, wouldn't that be a problem for alacarte?

My vote: alacarte should be augmented with some normal non disastrous
reaction to such a mishap.

Also 2x Questions:
(1) I think that the system defaults should not be always and for all time
changed for all like type files when I use the opening with option of the
context menu within nautilus to choose a application with which to open some
file, but only when that be explicitly desired by the user ie admin.

Should I or someone suggest such a change to the nautilus software?

(2) Am I wrong to under Ubuntu be running around all the time as an
admin group member? (sorry, I'm a former Win98SE user and noob at
Ubuntu)

RE: [Bug 273500] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__gtk_paint_box()

2008-09-25 Thread Robert D. Martin

Hi 8/

sorry, but so far in the aftermath of the updates/upgrades that have
since taken place I have yet to experience such a crash again. On the
other hand, the failure to respond to a left-click of the personal
folder and -sub-folder icons within the Places (german : ) remains in
effect.

Status in “nautilus” source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: nautilus

#208144 reports that nautilus crashed upon system start. Also in my case it
was just after starting the OS when I did attempt to open a nautilus window
upon my home directory that this crash occured and the apport report got
automatically initiated. I then noted that repeated attempts to open a
nautilus window anywhere else also failed. Success at opening a nautilus
window I first had again by way of right-clicking upon the trashcan symbol
and choosing to open that display. -- is this case then a duplicate of
 208144?

(please note, since that occured I spent some time checking to see whether
such crashing be a duplicate of previously reported crashes. In order better
to report in about crashes in the future I therefore added ddeb to the third
party software sources. That then led to an upgrade at this PC from
2.23. to 2.24.0-0ubuntu1 etc. this time including the ddeb sources. The
OS is now supposed to be restarted, so I will be using the newer version
 thereafter.)

current values are now therefore (other than at the moment of the crash)
