[Bug 1719143] [NEW] Unable to calibrate monitors through Gnome Control Center->Color in artful

2017-09-23 Thread Robert Hutton
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Artful, using gnome-session to access vanilla GNOME
session on Wayland (also tried on xorg). Attempting to calibrate
monitors through Gnome Control Center->Devices->Color. All attempts
ended at the point where I was asked to put the device onto the monitor,
with the error:

Calibration failed!
An internal error occurred that could not be recovered. You can remove the
calibration device.

I attempted to fix the permissions error for /dev/dri/card0. Current
permissions:
rwh@desktop:~$ ls -l /dev/dri/card0
crw-rw+ 1 root video 226, 0 Sep 24 12:15 /dev/dri/card0

Tried adding my user to video group, which made no difference. Then made file
world r/w:
rwh@desktop:~$ sudo chmod o+rw /dev/dri/card0

Which fixed that problem. Now, in the calibrate wizard, on the second
step (Display Type) I am offered three options (LCD, CRT, Projector)
where I only saw LCD previously. However, the calibration step failed
the same as before. Syslog:

[Bug 1433877] [NEW] vlc inappropriately greys out menu items in Playback and Audio menus

2015-03-18 Thread Robert Hutton
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 15.04 amd64, vlc version 2.2.0~rc2-2

When playing an audio file (.ogg, .mp3 and .wav files tested), the
following menu items are greyed out inappropriately (they were not
greyed out while playing the same files in vlc version 2.1.4 on Ubuntu
14.04, for example):

Playback
-> Custom Bookmarks
-> Speed
-> Jump Forward
-> Jump Backward
Audio
-> Audio Track
-> Visualizations

The functions themselves are not actually disabled, as you can use the
keyboard shortcuts to access them (for example, using the + and - as
well as [ and ] keys to affect playback speed.

[Bug 963766] Re: kvm bridged network not available in GUI

2012-04-04 Thread Robert Hutton
Yes, you can set this up with some commands in a terminal and modifying
/etc/network/interfaces. Some simple instructions here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Networking#Bridged_Networking

Note the bits about capabilities, and note also that it's possible to
use DHCP to assign both the KVM host's IP address, and the guests' ip
addresses through the bridged connection. In this configuration,
they'll all end up with IP addresses on the physical network, assigned
by whatever dhcp server is available on that network segment.

One important thing to keep in mind is that wireless network cards
usually don't support bridging. I'm not sure what the status of
bridging on PPPoE or PPPoA interfaces are.

However, I agree it'd be nice to have virt-manager working properly! :)

[Bug 968218] Re: ssh x11 forwarding precise to oneiric causes glibc malloc(): memory corruption

2012-04-03 Thread Robert Hutton
Hi Robert,

Great stuff! I did the following on the Oneiric machine:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:sarvatt/green
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

The following packages will be upgraded:
  aptdaemon aptdaemon-data libxi6 libxi6-dbg python-aptdaemon
  python-aptdaemon-gtk python-aptdaemon.gtk3widgets
  python-aptdaemon.gtkwidgets

sudo shutdown -r now

And now SSH X11 forwarding to that box from my desktop running Precise
and my VirtualBox VM running Precise both work fine, at least for that
list of applications above. :)

I hope this makes it into Oneiric before Precise is released; I suspect
there'll be a whole lot more people hitting this bug if it's still there
after release date. ;)

Thanks,

Rob

[Bug 968218] Re: ssh x11 forwarding precise to oneiric causes glibc malloc(): memory corruption

2012-04-02 Thread Robert Hutton
Hi Bryce,

I tried backtracing X11 using those instructions, but couldn't get X11
on either the Precise or the Oneiric side to give me a backtrace
(because it didn't actually crash).

However, I managed to backtrace some of the applications that crashed,
using the "Core Files" section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace (see
attached).

Now that I think about it, it appears the apps that are crashing are
GTK3, and the ones that aren't are GTK2...

[Bug 968218] Re: ssh x11 forwarding precise to oneiric causes glibc malloc(): memory corruption

2012-03-29 Thread Robert Hutton
I've just tested SSHing from Precise to Natty and everything seems to
work fine. So perhaps this is more truthfully a bug in Oneiric.

** Description changed:

SSHing (with X11 forwarding enabled) from a Precise machine to an
Oneiric machine and running certain X11 forwarded programs causes a
crash of the program, either immediately or on the first mouse click on
  that program's window.

I have seen this on two client machines (a laptop and a desktop) running
the latest precise release, connecting to either the oneiric desktop
release or oneiric server release on the server side. I have also
reproduced this with two VirtualBox VMs, connected together with host-
only networking and with desktop releases of Oneiric and Precise
  installed.

  To reproduce:
  - On client machine, install Precise with all updates as of 2012-03-29.
  - On server machine, install Oneiric with all updates as of 2012-03-29.
  - Set up host-only networking so that machines can ssh to each other.
  - On client machine, "ssh -X" to the server machine. Then run an X11
application. Some applications will crash immediately or on the first mouse
click on that application.

On my test VirtualBox setup, applications that always crash on first click:
  - gnome-terminal
  - nautilus
  - aisleriot solitaire
  - gnome-control-center
  - file-roller
- - firefox
  - brasero
  - gcalctool
  - palimpsest

  Applications that do not crash:
  - Libre Office
  - gimp
  - banshee
  - firefox
  - thunderbird

Obviously, this isn't an exhaustive list. When applications crash, they
spew out a large error message. On my desktop machine, sshing in to an
Oneiric Server install on a physical machine, the programs crash
immediately without showing a window, but on my test setup with two
VirtualBox VMs, you first have to click on the window to cause it to
crash. Sample crash output is attched to this bug report in the
  crash_output.txt file.

[Bug 968218] Re: ssh x11 forwarding precise to oneiric causes glibc malloc(): memory corruption

2012-03-29 Thread Robert Hutton
** Attachment added: "crash_output.txt"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/968218/+attachment/2960363/+files/crash_output.txt

- the latest oneiric release, connecting to either the oneiric desktop
+ the latest precise release, connecting to either the oneiric desktop
release or oneiric server release on the server side. I have also
reproduced this with two VirtualBox VMs, connected together with host-
only networking and with desktop releases of Oneiric and Precise

  - firefox
  - brasero
  - gcalctool
  - palimpsest

  Applications that do not crash:
  - Libre Office
  - gimp
  - banshee
  - firefox
  - thunderbird

Obviously, this isn't an exhaustive list, but you get the idea. When
applications crash, they spew out a large error message. On my desktop
machine, sshing in to an Oneiric Server install on a physical machine,
the programs crash immediately without showing a window, but on my test
setup with two VirtualBox VMs, you first have to click on the window to
cause it to crash. Sample crash output is attched to this bug report in
  the crash_output.txt file.

[Bug 878492] Re: Keyboard shortcut - F10 shortcut is used to show menu and this is wrong

2012-03-22 Thread Robert Hutton
The new default shortcut for maximise is Super+Up (and restore is
Super+Down). These are now being shown in the keyboard shortcuts help
that is displayed by holding super.

[Bug 859259] Re: uid, gid, forceuid, forcegid seem to be ignored in smbmount on oneiric 11.10 beta2

2011-11-11 Thread Robert Hutton
Interestingly, I've noticed a difference between using mount.cifs setuid
root (invoked as a normal user) and actually running mount.cifs as root,
using sudo:

mount.cifs --verbose -o rw,user=/rwh,uid=1000,gid=1000
 /media/
Password:
mount.cifs kernel mount options:
ip=,unc=\\\,noauto,uid=0,gid=0,ver=1,user=rwh,domain=,prefixpath=,pass=

sudo mount.cifs --verbose -o rw,user=/rwh,uid=1000,gid=1000
 /media/
Password:
mount.cifs kernel mount options:
ip=,unc=\\\,uid=1000,gid=1000,ver=1,user=rwh,domain=,prefixpath=,pass=

Note the difference between the reported uid and gid values. Perhaps
this is a change in the way the kernel module behaves given a setuid
root mount.cifs?

[Bug 859259] Re: uid, gid, forceuid, forcegid seem to be ignored in smbmount on oneiric 11.10 beta2

2011-10-05 Thread Robert Hutton
I'm also affected by this. I upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 today, and
now my cifs mounts ignore the uid and gid the same as the OP.

An example of an fstab entry that I used with success before the upgrade
and didn't work afterwards:

//fs1/Temp   /media/tempcifs
noauto,rw,user,user=mydomain/rwh,uid=rwh,gid=rwh 0 0

I get the same result if I mount shares manually using the mount.cifs
command. e.g.:

mount.cifs //fs1/Temp /media/temp -o user=mydomain/rwh,uid=rwh,gid=rwh

ls -ld temp
drwxrws--x 14 root root 0 2011-08-05 10:00 temp

The same thing happens if I use numeric uid/gid.

[Bug 721415] [NEW] maximised gnome-terminal crashes when zoomed out and changing tabs

2011-02-18 Thread Robert Hutton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

1. Experienced on Ubuntu 10.10 x64
2. gnome-terminal version 2.32.0-0ubuntu1
3. Expected tabs to change successfully.
4. Instead, gnome-terminal crashed, taking all open tabs with it.

I have repeated this bug on two machines, both with ubuntu 10.10 x64.

Steps to repeat:
1. Open gnome terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal).
2. Maximise the window.
3. Open a second tab.
4. Zoom out four or more times, either by pressing ctrl+- or by selecting Zoom
Out from the View menu.
5. Switch tabs, by pressing ctrl+pgup, ctrl+pg down or by clicking on another
tab with the mouse.
6. gnome-terminal crashes.

Re: [Bug 260191] Re: Evolution server crashed when launching synaptic

2009-10-28 Thread Robert Hutton
Yes still an issue today even after applyingyesterdays patch. Crash happens
in the background, I think it is when system is checking for updates (they
are set to automatically download) crash icon appears.

[Bug 295014] [NEW] Highlights in a word document (.doc) saved in openoffice writer cannot be removed using MS Word

2008-11-06 Thread Robert Hutton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-core

Ubuntu release: 8.10 (intrepid ibex)

Package version: 1:2.4.1-11ubuntu2

Expected behaviour: Highlights added to an OO.org Writer document which
is saved as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) should be removable using
Microsoft Word.

What happened instead: Highlights added to a document which is saved as
Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) cannot be removed using Microsoft Word.

Steps to replicate the bug:

1. create a new document in OO.org Writer
2. Add some text
3. Select some text
4. Use the Highlighting tool to add a highlight to the selected text
5. Save the document as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)
6. Open the saved document in Microsoft Word (tested versions: Word 2000
version 9.0.2720 and Word 2003 SP3 version 11.8227.8221)
7. Select the highlighted text
8. Use the Highlight tool to choose "None" as the highlight
9. The highlight on the text remains

Note: it is possible to choose a different highlight colour, but not
possible to remove the original highlight.

** Affects: openoffice.org (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 198955] [NEW] Clock applet: Locations section: shows timezone as home despite different daylight savings setting

2008-03-05 Thread Robert Hutton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=hardy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu hardy (development branch)"

gnome-panel:
  Installed: 1:2.21.92-0ubuntu1

When adding multiple locations from around the country to the Locations
section of the Time applet, two locations come up as the Home timezone,
despite daylight savings being applied at my location (Melbourne) but
not at the other (Brisbane). This is confusing as local time is
different in these locations. See attached screenshot.

While daylight savings is in effect in my location I would expect my
location to have the Home icon, but not at the location where daylight
savings is not in effect. This is because the local time in the two
locations is different, despite being in the same timezone. When
daylight savings time is not applied in either zone (as will be the case
in the southern winter), then I would expect the home timezone to be
displayed at both locations because the local time will be the same.

Re: [Bug 85488] Re: some usb_devices fault if usb_suspend enabled

2007-08-11 Thread Robert Hutton
Hi Mum,

Nothing I can do at the moment for your scanner, but confirmation below that
the next version 'Gutsy Gibbon' fixes the scanner issue. It's due out in 4
months but we can probably upgrade in around 2 months (for the pre-release
version). It's available right now but it could be a bit ropey upgrading at
this point (it's not ready yet).

Love,

Robert

Re: [Bug 85488] Enhancement to Joel Berger's script

2007-07-29 Thread Robert Hutton
Or it might not work, just re-read it properly!

Looks like the next version of Ubuntu (the "Gutsy Gibbon"!) will take care
of it.

Love,

Robert

[Bug 108153] Re: Scanning with Canon Lide 25 doesn't work

2007-07-29 Thread Robert Hutton
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 85488 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/85488

I can confirm the same problem with Feisty. When I first load Sane, the
scanner motor operates during initialisation (usually) but then I
preview or scan, the system pauses then returns a complete black scanned
page. The scanner also worked fine under Edgy (which I was using at the
point of purchase).

Can confirm I also have the problem, and the latest gflrx updates today
have not resolved the issue either - can't open Open Office and no 3D
(on Radeon 9200SE).
