[Bug 1422225] Re: The file or folder [URL HERE] does not exist when right-click - Open Link on a URL in konsole

2015-02-16 Thread Robert Wall
If I go to System Settings - Applications - Default Applications -
Web Browser and select in the following browser and type firefox,
konsole works as expected. If I then change it back to in an
application based on the contents of the URL, it breaks again. I expect
this is some broader KDE issue rather than something relevant to
konsole, but I don't know how to test further.

[Bug 1422227] [NEW] Unable to interact with panel after right-clicking Pager widget and selecting Configure Desktops

2015-02-15 Thread Robert Wall
Public bug reported:

I am unable to interact with the panel and widgets on it after I right-
click the Pager widget and select Configure Desktops, until I close the
window.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Right-click the Pager widget in the lower left (by default)
2) Click Configure Desktops on the context menu
3) Attempt to left-click the Application Launcher, right-click a taskbar entry,
etc.
4) Notice that nothing happens
5) Close the Configure Desktops window
6) Notice that for some actions in (3), the correct response now happens
(delayed), and for some it still doesn't

Expected result:

Actions taken in step (3) immediately have an effect, as normal.

[Bug 1422228] [NEW] muon-discover can't find any packages on first boot until `apt-get update' is done

2015-02-15 Thread Robert Wall
Public bug reported:

On my first boot after installing Kubuntu vivid, I attempted to use Muon
Discover to install some packages. No matter what I searched for, it did
not find anything. I could not find a way to manually update the package
lists through Muon (this is probably a bug all on its own), and ended up
doing `sudo apt-get update' in the terminal. After doing so, Muon found

[Bug 1422230] [NEW] Clicking the `Install' button in muon-discover has no discernable effect

2015-02-15 Thread Robert Wall
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) Click the Application Launcher in the bottom left of the screen
2) Type `Muon' and click on `Muon Discover'
3) When Muon opens, click the Search box and type Chromium (which I don't have
installed)
4) Click the `Install' button next to `Chromium Web Browser'
5) Nothing happens. No feedback to say it's doing anything, and as far as I can
tell it is in fact not doing anything.

[Bug 584410] Re: Not-so-subtle hint that I shouldn't want to be shown notifications

2010-05-23 Thread Robert Wall
Confirming on Maverick with notification-daemon. To be more specific,
the number of Don't show this message again buttons increases by one
every time a particular action happens. For example, the first time I
connect to wifi in a session, I get one button. Second time, I get two,
etc.

2010-04-30 Thread Robert Wall
As I said, it doesn't happen every time I join an IRC channel, but it
does happen often. Seems to be more frequent when I have a slow
connection or when I'm joining large channels (like #ubuntu on
freenode). Steps to reproduce:

1) Connect to IRC
2) Room menu - Join...
3) Account:[IRC Account], Room: #channelname (e.g. rww_ on chat.freenode.net
and #ubuntu)
4) Join
5) Maybe observe lots of /join notices in the channel window

[Bug 553994] Re: knetworkmanager doesn't connect with networkmanager

2010-04-28 Thread Robert Wall
This just happened to me after an improper shutdown. Removing the stale
NetworkManager state file:

sudo rm /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state

( per
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NetworkManager#Network_Management_Disabled
)

fixed the problem and restored functionality. In my opinion, either
knetworkmanager or NetworkManager (whichever is responsible) should
clear out stale state files at startup, since most other applications in
the system that use state/PID files seem to be capable of doing so after
an improper shutdown.

[Bug 569285] [NEW] [person] has joined the room when one joins an IRC channel

2010-04-23 Thread Robert Wall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Empathy sometimes shows a [person] has joined the room line for every
person in the channel when the user joins an IRC channel. This behavior
is incorrect because: 1) the other people didn't just join the room, the
user did; 2) it only happens some of the time, so even if it's intended
behavior it's inconsistent.

[Bug 569286] [NEW] No way to apply theme changes to existing windows

2010-04-23 Thread Robert Wall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Changing the theme in Empathy preferences does not apply the new theme
to existing windows. As far as I can see, there's no way to do so. While
this isn't a huge problem in user-to-user windows (one can always just
close and re-open the window), it's a pain for group chats, where
closing the window leaves the chat room. Empathy should either 1) apply
changes to the theme setting to existing windows, or 2) offer a per-
window menu item to change the theme.

This problem also seems to apply to the setting for showing/hiding the
nick list in group chats.

[Bug 569289] [NEW] freenode is not the default IRC server

2010-04-23 Thread Robert Wall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

freenode is not the default IRC server in Empathy. Through past tireless
bug reporting on the part of others, freenode is the default IRC server
in most (all?) other IRC clients shipped with Ubuntu, to aid new users
in getting IRC support. Empathy, as the only pre-installed IRC-capable
client on Ubuntu desktop computers should also default to freenode,
instead of the first network in the (alphabetically-sorted) network
list.

[Bug 531871] [NEW] Pressing the left or right arrow keys move two units instead of one

2010-03-04 Thread Robert Wall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: singularity

Pressing the left or right arrow keys once in certain screens of
singularity consistently moves left or right by two units instead of
one. I first noticed this in the Research window and thought it might be
deliberate. However it also happens when moving through a set of bases
in one region (thus skipping every other base), which is very annoying.

Up and down arrow keys work fine, as do all of the other keyboard
shortcuts I've used. It's just left and right arrow keys.

[Bug 532387] [NEW] There was an error while parsing the account details. when adding new account in wizard

2010-03-04 Thread Robert Wall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I started empathy for the first time (that I can remember) on this (lucid)
computer. A wizard popped up asking if I wanted to add an existing account,
create a new account, or just see people nearby. I selected add an existing
account, then selected Google Talk, then entered my Google ID and password. I
selected that I did had additional accounts to set up, then got the following
error (after several seconds of the window being blank):
---
There was an error while parsing the account details.

The error message was: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes
include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus
security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the
network connection was broken.

You can either go back and try to enter your accounts' details again or quit
this assistant and add accounts later from the Edit menu.
---
I then pressed the Back button, entered my account details again, selected that
I didn't have additional accounts, and pressed Next. On the next screen, I said
that I didn't want to enable the local chat feature, and pressed Apply.
Clicking the Apply button didn't do anything. After a few seconds, the window
changed to the same error as above.

I then clicked Close. In the Empathy contact list window, I did Edit -
Accounts and ended up back at the wizard's first page, which didn't work
any better the second time around.

[Bug 517395] [NEW] [lucid][rv620] xorg fails to start without radeon.modeset=0

2010-02-04 Thread Robert Wall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Lucid fails to start xorg after latest updates. Sometimes, I get a text
login screen, sometimes I just get a screen with an underscore in the
corner and gibberish when I type anything (and have to shutdown with
magic SysRq codes). Everything starts fine if I pass radeon.modeset=0
with GRUB.

[Bug 517395] Re: [lucid][rv620] xorg fails to start without radeon.modeset=0

2010-02-04 Thread Robert Wall
I restarted it a few more times (without radeon.modeset=0) to see if any
other bizzare things would happen. Twice, I got to the screen with an
underscore in the corner, but it had a (moveable) mouse cursor in the
middle. Doing Ctrl-Alt-F1 got me to a text terminal. Switching back to
Xorg with Ctrl-Alt-F7 got me to my desktop. I started up Firefox to get
to Launchpad, and the computer then stopped responding to keyboard and
mouse input. Had to use magic SysRq keys to shutdown. Xorg log is
attached.

This error happens because you did not set up the Medibuntu repositories
properly, and Medibuntu's public key was not added. The instructions for
doing this are at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu .
Specifically, you need the following:

sudo apt-get --quiet update sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-
unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring sudo apt-get --quiet update

Marking bug as invalid.

[Bug 424712] [NEW] [rv620] Karmic Alpha 5 resets the GPU repeatedly during bootup, then freezes

2009-09-05 Thread Robert Wall
Public bug reported:

I'm using an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450, which identifies as follows in
lspci on Jaunty:

I created a LiveUSB of Karmic Alpha 5 using usb-creator with persistent
storage, and rebooted into it. It gets into Xorg and shows a loading
screen with a brown background and a moving white line in the center.
Then, the screen flashes six times, the line stops moving, and the
computer freezes up. Ctrl-Alt-Fx no longer works, and the only way I can
get it to respond is with Alt-SysRq-REISUB.

I extracted the relevant logfiles by mounting the persistent storage
file, and will attach them. The end of /var/log/messages (attached)
shows [drm] Resetting GPU six times, which would explain the six
screen flashes. I also have six Xorg.x.log files, which I'll attach
next.

[Bug 402082] Re: boinc might use /home

2009-07-21 Thread Robert Wall
The BOINC packages are currently configured on a per-computer basis, not
a per-user basis. This has several advantages:

* the BOINC client can do work while nobody's logged in
* more than one user can control the BOINC instance, as the files are owned by
a BOINC user and group
* usually, people don't want to have different configurations for different
users

Per-computer files are supposed to be stored in /var/lib/. Doing what
BOINC does on Windows and making a home folder for the BOINC user in
/home/ doesn't seem to be the done thing in Debian-based distros.

Even in situations, like yours, where putting them in /home seems to
make sense, there are potential problems. Jaunty and Karmic's BOINC
packages are different versions, and using the same configuration files
for those two versions is probably not a great idea.

For your particular situation, I'd recommend using the upstream .sh
version at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php, rather than
Ubuntu's packages. If you run that inside your home directory, it'll
install BOINC there, and you can run the binaries it creates from either
karmic or jaunty. That way, you'd be using the same version (in fact,
the same binaries), and shouldn't have problems. However, since you
wouldn't be using Ubuntu packages in this case, it's rather outside the
scope of this venue...

[Bug 383256] Re: seahorse no longer running after upgrade to karmic, no gpg agent available

2009-07-15 Thread Robert Wall
seahorse-plugins was changed to a suggest in the latest version,
2.27.1-0ubuntu1. Since there's no changelog comment to that effect, I'm
not sure whether it was deliberate or an oversight during the merge from
Debian... Anyway. Not installing seahorse-plugins by default also breaks
Nautilus's ability to open .asc files, and removes the useful gedit
plugin to encrypt/decrypt text, so it'd be excellent to revert that
change (or at least get confirmation that it was deliberate?).

[Bug 339822] Re: project selection combo box too narrow for text

2009-06-05 Thread Robert Wall
The .sh installer version and the karmic boinc package appear to be
using different versions of wxWidgets (per HelpAbout BOINC Manager).
Could that be causing it to work in one (.sh, using wxWidgets 2.8.7) and
not the other (karmic, using 2.8.9 I think)?

Daniel: I used the .sh installer at
http://boincdl.ssl.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_6.4.5_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh on
Karmic (as I said earlier, that doesn't exhibit this bug). I haven't
figured out how to compile BOINC from source, so I can't test that.

[Bug 378523] [NEW] Evolution won't set UTC as a second zone on Calendar and Tasks preferences

2009-05-19 Thread Robert Wall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I wanted to make events in Evolution's calendar display times in both
UTC and Pacific Daylight Time (my primary timezone), but the relevant
preference doesn't appear to work with UTC, though it does work with
other timezones.

Steps to reproduce:
0. Open Evolution
1. Edit Preferences
2. Click the Calendar and Tasks icon at the left side of the preferences
window
3. On the General tab, under Time, click the button to the right of Second
zone, and click Select...
4. In the dropdown box, scroll to the top and click UTC
5. Click OK
6. Note that the button says None instead of UTC
7. Click Close in the Preferences window
8. Note that UTC times are not shown in Day View

Expected result:
UTC is set as a second time zone and displayed in Day View.

Actual result:
No second timezone is set.

2009-05-19 Thread Robert Wall
I no longer get this bug with 6.4.5 for Linux x64 from

Since Karmic currently has the same version as Jaunty (6.2.18), it's
currently experiencing it too.

Debian Experimental has 6.4.5, and there appears to be a request that it
be synced to Ubuntu open already: bug 311107

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This is a problem with the rtl8187 kernel module used by the RTL8187B
wireless adapter in the Toshiba Satellite L40. A bug report for this
problem has already been opened as bug 279798, so I'm going to mark this
report as a duplicate of that one.

Please look at the other bug report to see if there is any missing
information that you can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for
the bug. Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should
occur in the other report. Feel free to continue to report any other
bugs you may find.

[Bug 350091] [NEW] [Asus P5K-E Wifi-AP] suspend/resume failure

2009-03-27 Thread Robert Wall
Public bug reported:

I attempted to run sudo bash /usr/share/checkbox/scripts/suspend_test
--full. I pressed [Enter] to begin the first test and the screen went
black and turned off. The computer's fan stayed on, and the suspend
indicator (blinking power light) on the case didn't happen. The computer
fails to suspend with GNOME's suspend button, either. This happens every
time.

The computer's motherboard is an Asus P5K-E Wifi-AP with all BIOS
settings default. The graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 3450 (RV620).
The wireless card is a Realtek 8187 using the rtl8187 module. The system
is running a fully-updated Ubuntu Jaunty beta.

Answers to questions on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume :
* Did the machine break while going to sleep or waking up? I believe that it
failed while going to sleep, because the computer's fan did not turn off at all.
* Is it reproducible? Yes, it happens every time.
* Did it work before? I have not used suspend/resume on this computer on Linux
before, so I don't know. It works in Windows XP, however.
* Do you end up with flashing caps-lock or similar? No.

I just noticed the Debugging Suspend section of the above link, and
will restart now to do those steps, then add information in a comment.

[Bug 97722] Re: Windows dual-boot can corrupt system clock even if time servers are enabled

2009-03-16 Thread Robert Wall
trollord: set UTC=no in /etc/default/rcS. This setting will make
Ubuntu read and write to the hardware clock in localtime, rather than
UTC. Windows does the same by default, and thus you won't have problems
with them fighting over the clock's timezone. This is the default (in
Intrepid and Jaunty, anyway) for Ubuntu installations if Windows was
installed first.

David Nemeskey: Ticking Set date and time manually turns off NTP, so
no, it wouldn't check the time servers on startup. If Kubuntu was not
detecting your time zone change, then it's likely that your timezone
wasn't set correctly, because tzdata contains information on time zone
changes and is applied in (K)Ubuntu.

Marking this report as invalid; Windows using the hardware clock
differently from Ubuntu, Linux, and most other operating systems, is not
really something we can fix.
