[Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits

2013-11-20 Thread RobinJ
Sorry if I'm wrong, but wouldn't we simply be able to check every second
or so whether the settings daemon from the login manager has exited, and
only when that one has exited, start the settings daemon for the user?

[Bug 1072206] Re: [nvidia] Window content is black or transparent

2013-10-19 Thread RobinJ
Ubuntu 13.10 AMD64
AMD FX-6100
NVidia GT 430
NVidia Driver 319.32

This occurs to me, too, when minimizing/maximizing windows.
And the performance is abysmal... I think even NVidia is trying to push me
towards the Nouveay drivers now... Honestly. Never thought I'd say this but the
Nouveau drivers are performing better for me.

[Bug 1212400] [NEW] flush after copy

2013-08-14 Thread RobinJ
Public bug reported:

I think every day-to-day Linux user has come across the problem quite
frequently by now, as it's by now means specific to elementary OS (and
thus, I must admit I'm not certain whether I filed this report under the
right project).

Insert a USB drive (in this case a 4GB one with a FAT32 file system), copy a
large file like a movie to it.
Result: The copy dialog will show up, and within 10 seconds or so the bar is at
100% and it says "0 seconds remaining".
After that you still have to wait ~5 minutes for the data to actually be copied.
When looking at iotop during tis time you can see a process called flush is
still actively working (the weird thing is that it's often more like 80%+ IO
for a while, then nothing for a while, and repeat until finished).
When it's finally done, the file copy dialog will disappear and you can safely
unmount the storage media.

This is a longstanding problem preset in many distro's, and I think it's
about time something was done about it. Although I don't really know
whether it's related to the file manager or something else. But seeing
as I wouldn't have a clue what else it'd be related to, I chose to file
it as a bug in the file manager.

[Bug 1126089] [NEW] Huge icon in Alacarte and Unity Dash

2013-02-15 Thread RobinJ
Public bug reported:

First of all, I don't really know for which package I should file this
bug report. Probably Unity, but Alacarte also has the problem.

How to reproduce:
1. Download Eclipse (because the package in the repositories is still
hopelessly out of date) from
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/technology/epp/downloads/release/juno/SR1/eclipse-java-juno-SR1-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz
2. Extract it to ~/.eclipse/
3. Install Alacarte (the Gnome menu editor)
4. Open Alacarte
5. Go to the category Programming
6. New item
7. Name: Eclipse; Command: Browse and select ~/.eclipse/eclipse; Icon: Choose
~/.eclipse/icon.xpm
At this point the window layout gets messed up because of a giant icon;
http://i.imgur.com/QCxmfnm.jpg
8. OK
9. Close Alacarte
10. Open Unity Dash
11. Search for "ecli"
A giant partially-shown Eclipse icon will appear; http://i.imgur.com/D42F8JP.jpg

[Bug 1012818] [NEW] Can't submit reviews

2012-06-13 Thread RobinJ
Public bug reported:

Every time I try to submit a review it tells me "An error occured, check
the log files". I thought this would get fixed soon, but there has been
absolutely no improvement. It might also be nice to include in the
message where those "log files" are located (which ones I should take a
look at).

[Bug 1008190] [NEW] Not available for other Linux distros

2012-06-03 Thread RobinJ
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu One Client is available for Windows, Android, iPhone, iPad and
Ubuntu. That's great, but I'm missing two major platforms here. Mac OS (which
this bug report isn't about), and ... every other non-Ubuntu-based Linux distro
out there. Ubuntu One will never be a decent alternative to other services like
Dropbox, as long as it can only be used on one Linux distro; even now the
client can finally be considered stable.
I am running Ubuntu on my desktop, and I wanted to give Fedora 17 a try on my
laptop, as Ubuntu is becoming too much of a resource hog to use fluently on
that particular system. My setup was done, I had installed everything I use on
a daily basis, appart from Ubuntu One.
I searched in the repositories, and found nothing. No surprise there.
I went to the Ubuntu One website, and went through to the download page. I
found instructions on how to install it on Windows, iPad, iPod and Android. For
Ubuntu all there was was this message: "Ubuntu One is installed by default if
you are running Ubuntu". Nothing what so ever is mentioned about other Linux
distributions.
I Googled it, and apparently a lot of people ran into the same problem. I found
a bunch of alternative solutions. I tried them all, and nothing worked.

You could argue whether this is a bug, but in my opinion it is. It is a
*big* problem, which needs a solution, and rather sooner than later.
This is probably one if the biggest factors that plays a role in Ubuntu
One's success, or lack thereof. All that can be found on this subject in
the Ubuntu docs is a link to a project which no longer works.

For now, I'm just going to copy all my files from my Ubuntu One folder
to my Dropbox, and dump Ubuntu One untill there is a solution for this
problem.

[Bug 995425] [NEW] Copy disc - Wrong size

2012-05-06 Thread RobinJ
Public bug reported:

Test case:
1. Insert a CD in your CD drive with 15MB of content.
2. Copy image -> Image file -> ISO
3. After the copying finished, eject the CD without closing Brasero.
4. Insert the next CD (contents around 560MB in my case).
5. Copy image -> Image file -> ISO
6. At first it still showed the title and size of the first CD. I cancelled it,
mounted the CD with Nautilus, and repeated step 5. This time it showed the
correct title, but not the correct size (still 15MB).
7. Start copying.
8. When it's finished, go to the location where the ISO file was saved.
Observe; It's a 15MB ISO with only half-written files, while the CD's contents
where around 560MB.
9. Restart Brasero, and repeat step 5. This time it reports the correct title
and size. The created image is the correct size, but when you extract it, the
content is onlt 150MB and the files are corrupted/half-written.

Maybe it's an idea to copy the chosen wallpaper to a directory LightDM
always has access to.

[Bug 994089] [NEW] Takes a long time to boot and can't login

2012-05-03 Thread RobinJ
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS AMD64, running Unity, using nvidia-current
--

My previous boot took a really long time (just staring at the boot screen), and
when it finally proceeded, I couldn't login. I entered my password as usual,
and LightDM simply restarted. Only now it didn't seem to respond to my keyboard
anymore (it wasn't unresponsive on the whole, as it still jumped to the other
screen when I moved my cursor over there). After rebooting, the problem was
gone. I installed the latest updates this morning, that's probably the only
special thing that happened.
If you need any log files appart from the one I provide, just ask. I've copied
my whole log folder before I rebooted the system.

[Bug 993480] [NEW] Default wallpaper at login screen

2012-05-02 Thread RobinJ
Public bug reported:

This happens on both my laptop (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, AMD64, Unity 2D,
nvidia-current) and my desktop (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, AMD64, Unity, nvidia-current).
I think it just used to work in Beta 2.
--

On both computers, my wallpaper is set to `/home/robin/Ubuntu
One/Wallpapers/Mockingjay.jpg`, and I already tried `chmod 777`. All I
get at the login screen is the default wallpaper, in stead of the user-
specified wallpaper.

File: `/home/robin/Ubuntu One/Wallpapers/Mockingjay.jpg`
-rw-rw-r-- 1 robin robin 1031328 Apr 26 20:05 Mockingjay.jpg

robin@RobinJ:/var/log/lightdm$ sudo cat x-0-greeter.log | grep jpg

[Bug 990080] [NEW] Unity plugin can still be disabled

2012-04-27 Thread RobinJ
Public bug reported:

In the main window of CCSM you cannot disable the Unity plugin anymore, which
is a good thing. However, if you click on the plugin, you can still disable it
with the checkbox on the left.
Screenshot: http://minus.com/ms3TWvk9H/5

Also, when a user tries to boot into the "Ubuntu" session, I think it
should be checked whether the Unity plugin is still enabled, and if it
is not, enable it automatically (or at least ask the user if it should
be enabled). Because after I installed and removed Gnome Shell, the
plugin was disabled, and I'm pretty sure I didn't do it.

[Bug 984991] Re: [Latitude D620, SigmaTel STAC9200, Speaker, Internal] Sound disappears

2012-04-27 Thread RobinJ
I think I might be on to something here...
If I open the Sound settings panel, no sound device is selected, but the sound
is working. The sound stops working from the moment I select one. That's why I
can't undo it, because there's no way to "unselect" the only item in the list.

  --

  Problem:
I went to sound settings, and played around with the general volume slider
and the one for the sound effects, sometimes using the volume keys on my
laptop. Then suddenly the sound stopped working.

  What I did before I ran ubuntu-bug:
pidof pulseaudio (it was still running)
  killall pulseaudio
pidof pulseaudio (it was again, still running (didn't check whether the PID
was the same, but I'd assume it wasn't)

The first test tone in ubuntu-bug played, the second one didn't.

[Bug 986810] Re: Kernel panic when using bluetooth

2012-04-23 Thread RobinJ
I'm guessing this is what I would need to do next?
robin@robin-Latitude-D620:~$ apport-collect -p linux-image-3.2.0-23-generic
986810
I clicked the send button, and the window just disappeared (the terminal
indicating for a while after that the application was still running, though),
so what just happened to the report?

[Bug 986810] Lsusb.txt

apport information

** Attachment added: "Lsusb.txt"
   https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986810/+attachment/3100268/+files/Lsusb.txt

** Description changed:

This happens on 2 systems, both are Dell Latitude D620.
  - My mother's, which is running Ubuntu 11.10 AMD64, running Unity 2D.
  - And mine, which is running Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 AMD64, running Unity 2D,
with all the latest updates installed.
  --

If I plug in my USB bluetooth dongle in either of those systems, and try to
send a file to my phone, or try to connect it to my phone, the screen just
freezes after a few minutes and the caps lock, scroll lock and wifi lights on
the laptop start blinking. At this point, I get no response to things like
CTRL+ALT+F1 anymore.
I don't really know which files or information I need to attach in this case,
neither do I know to which package this problem is related. So just ask what
what you need, and I'll attach it.

[Bug 986810] [NEW] Kernel panic when using bluetooth

2012-04-22 Thread RobinJ
Public bug reported:

This happens on 2 systems, both are Dell Latitude D620.
- My mother's, which is running Ubuntu 11.10 AMD64, running Unity 2D.
- And mine, which is running Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 AMD64, running Unity 2D, with
all the latest updates installed.

So just ask what
what you need, and I'll attach it.

the latest updates I installed, as I didn't have this problem in the
afternoon. I didn't play with the volume controls this time btw. Neither
do I know whether this happened an hour ago, or just now when Empathy
should have made a sound. All I know is that it's a rather annoying bug.

[Bug 985039] [NEW] Graphical distortion when dragging icons from Dash

2012-04-18 Thread RobinJ
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 AMD64, running Unity 2D, using nvidia-current for an NVidia
Quadro NVS 110M
--

Sometimes, when I start dragging an icon from the Unity 2D Dash, some
graphical distortion pops up on the background of the icon that's being
dragged. Sometimes this means a bunch of coloured lines, sometimes this
means a tiny green pixel in the upper left corner of the icon's
(transparent) background. This also doesn't always occur. Somestimes the
transparent part of the background is filled with the icon of the item I
last dragged as well.

Screenshots of both situations:

[Bug 984991] [NEW] [Latitude D620, SigmaTel STAC9200, Speaker, Internal] Sound gone after playing with volume

2012-04-18 Thread RobinJ
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 AMD64, running Unity 2D
--

Problem:
I went to sound settings, and played around with the general volume slider and
the one for the sound effects, sometimes using the volume keys on my laptop.
Then suddenly the sound stopped working.

What I did before I ran ubuntu-bug:
pidof pulseaudio (it was still running)
killall pulseaudio
pidof pulseaudio (it was again, still running (didn't check whether the PID was
the same, but I'd assume it wasn't)

The first test tone in ubuntu-bug played, the second one didn't.
