Was this a clean install of the version of ubuntu you are using or an
upgrade from a previous release?

Are you up to date with current packages? Do you use any PPA's or repo's
other than the standard ones?

Please be as specific as you can when filing bug reports as it helps

[Bug 146465] Re: repetitions are counted wrongly

The behavior described is the intended/expected behavior for the

The intention is that exceptions are part of the original count for

exceptions onto your repetition count.

Ok, that patch does NOT work as expected. popen attempts to open a 'sh'

won't run. Therefore, since the patch only checks for the open file
handle (which always succeeds on ubuntu), this patch does nothing
useful.

[Bug 196277] Re: [hardy] keyboard layout switching shortcut doesn't work after reboot

2008-05-06 Thread Roderick Greening
For those who have this problem, can they try creating a brand new user
account and testing it there. It is possible that those that have
migrated from earlier releases via dist-upgrades may have some files in
their home dir conflicting. Testing under a new account will help verify
that.

Secondly, if you still have this problem under a new account, and have
gone the emigration path, try making a backup of your xorg.conf and
trying a new default xorg.conf.

Just some additional test cases for those working on this bug.

[Bug 185868] Re: wink complains about not finding libexpat.so.0

2008-05-02 Thread Roderick Greening
Copying, moving and renaming libraries is bad. You can cause other
applications to break.

The correct fix is for the wink package to be rebuilt against the newer
libexpat library. An alternate fix would be for a compatibility package
to be provided in Hardy Heron.

If anyone follows the above advice, be warned you are creating a
potential for other programs to exhibit problems which are not going to
technically be bugs. For example, if a KDE or Gnome application actually
expects the newer libexpat, and you have made changes to that library,
you can cause crashes, corrupted information, etc. Similarly, if you use
the newer libexpat (by renaming or symlinking) for wink, it will expect
the internal data structure to be a certain way, and this could cause
problems randomly.

When a library changes major version number (e.g. from 0.x.x to 1.x.x)
this generally means that the library may not be backwards compatible.
Usually there are changes to the internal data structures, that are not
immediately evident to the end user, but could cause issues if the
program isn't updated to use the new libraries properly.

[Bug 218180] Re: Uninstall bug with compiz packages for kubuntu/hardy

2008-04-29 Thread Roderick Greening
Confirmed this issue.

The problem occurs when a user simply issues a remove and not a purge of
the desktop-effects-kde package, which leaves behind an Xsession file:

/etc/X11/Xsession.d/25enable-compiz

The contents of this file test for a hidden configuration file in the
users home directory:

$HOME/.kde/share/config/compizasWM

And if it exists, it exports the KDEWM variable to be /usr/bin/compiz.
This behaviour is incomplete, as the Xsession test for compiz should
test for the compiz binary before exporting it as a valid window
manager.

Please correct. I have attached the patch to correctly test for the
existence of compiz binary in addition to the original test.

[Bug 223671] [NEW] wnck and rsvg should be provided in seperate packages not requiring gnome

2008-04-28 Thread Roderick Greening
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-gnome2-desktop

python-gnome2-desktop should be a meta-package providing the individual
plugins rather than a complete package with the entire set of plugins.

The result of the current build is that packagers wishing to use wnck
and/or rsvg, are required to install python-gnome2-desktop with all the
gnome dependencies. For desktops other than Gnome (like KDE, Xfce, etc),
this forces the user to install 30+ additional unnecessary packages.

If you package wnck, rsvg, and the other plugins in python-
gnome2-desktop as separate packages, and use python-gnome2-desktop as a
simple meta-package, you will provide non-gnome users with a more
stream-lined experience, while maintaining backward compatibility for
packages looking for the package python-gnome2-desktop.

I am a KDE user, and feel that installing unnecessary gnome dependencies
should not be required.

I believe the gnome deps in the python-gnome2-desktop are triggered by
the trashcan and gnome vfs plugins. Without those, the list of deps is
significantly reduced.

This came up in relation to wanting to install screenlets, which really
only requires python, pygtk+, pycairo, python-xdg, wnck and rsvg.
Unfortunately the last two can only be found in python-gnome2-desktop.
As it stands, if I continue to install, it is forcing me to install 29
gnome libraries, 20+ of which have nothing to do with wnck and/or rsvg.

Kind regards,

Rod

[Bug 203658] [NEW] import emoticon broken in kopete when importing to the default emoticons

2008-03-18 Thread Roderick Greening
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kopete

In at least 7.10 and up to the latest 8.04 (alpha/beta) release of
Kubuntu, kopete does not allow you to import emoticons when on the
default emoticon set. You should either a) be able to edit the Default
and have the changes in your personal .kde/share or b) it should appear
greyed out and be documented that editing a default emoticon set is not
possible - install one.

Obviously a) is preferable. Right now, the Default emoticon set is
installed system wide and the import option exists but does nothing.
This import feature can use some additional testing and polishing to
ensure all facits of the feature are working correctly, which today,
they do not appear to be (unless I have missed something).

e.g.) when deleting an emoticon, it does not remove the old image. It should
ask for confirmation to remove the image, rather than leave it there.

[Bug 203658] Re: import emoticon broken in kopete when importing to the default emoticons

2008-03-18 Thread Roderick Greening
Looking at the patch, this line may be one of the culprits causing an
issue:

KIO::copy( d-activeElement.getAttribute(src).string(), xmldirname);

If Default does not yet exist in the users private share directory, it
creates a file called default rather than copying the emote to the
Default directory in the users private share.

Also, if you manually create the directory, and then do an import, you
can get it to appear in this directory, but it's still not correct and
then Default will show up as a theme twice in kopete.

[Bug 185868] Re: wink complains about not finding libexpat.so.0

2008-02-06 Thread Roderick Greening
Confirmed this bug under Hardy Heron alpha release. It appears that wink
was compiled/linked against an old libexpat version, prior to the ABI
change in expat.

Wink will need to be rebuilt against libexpat.so.1 for the new ABI
changes (assuming wink actually needs to be linked against libexpat at
all).

Do not create a soft link (ln -s) from the newer expat ABI to the old
one (libexpat.so.1 - libexpat.so.0), as this will produce
unexpected/unpredictable behaviour in the application. In addition,
there could be other apps with similar problems, and the soft link will
mask those and could cause major issues on your system.

The only way to correctly fix this is an updated package. The maintainer
will need to release an updated version to correct this behaviour.

Thanks.

Much appreciated.

On 12/5/07, John Johansen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I am unsure why AppArmor stopping klogd from accessing /proc/kallsyms would

[Bug 173709] apparmor with klogd in enforce mode, causes kdm to fail during initial launch on Hardy Heron

2007-12-03 Thread Roderick Greening
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apparmor

Upon upgrading to Hardy Heron via sudo adept_manager --dist-upgrade-
devel, I found that KDM would fail to launch when in Runlevel 2 (KDM
should automatically start in this level).

If I login and issue sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start, then KDM launches
successfully.

The last app/service to start just prior to this was klogd. I noticed
that with the Hardy Heron update, klogd was in enforce mode under
apparmor, and provided a complaint in the log as follows:

[ 26.284000] audit(1196704494.632:3): type=1502
operation=inode_permission requested_mask=r denied_mask=r
name=/proc/kallsyms pid=5088 profile=/sbin/klogd

So, it would appear that apparmor and klogd had somehow prevent KDM from
launching during boot (not sure if additional services would be impacted
if launched after klogd, other than KDM, which was easy to identify.

To resolve the issue, I have temporarily placed klogd into complain
mode, and rebooted. KDM now launches correctly.

Two points:

1) apparmor wrappers like this shouldn't cause KDM to fail (IMHO). How
can this be addressed so as to allow KDM to at least launch when an app
is in complain mode (like klogd). KDM is a must under Kubuntu.

2) What is the correct fix to apparmor/klogd based on my error message
below? I know that bumping back to complain mode does nothing for
security, but it got me up again. I'd like a permanent/proper fix.

Thanks.

[Bug 152856] Re: Kubuntu Package Installer (GDebiKDE) says Package File Does Not Exist when trying to install a deb that's in a directory that has a space in it's name.

2007-11-09 Thread Roderick Greening
The fix is unbelievably simple.

Patch attached and here's the change.. a one liner, simply add the
following line immediately after it reads the filename from the command
line (args[0]). The line replaces a space with '\ ' which is the proper
path expansion for directories with spaces in the filenames. Not sure if
there's a more gramatically correct way to do this, but this works.

 afile.replace(' ', '\\ ')

So, with the attached patch, this can be fixed and applied to package.

** Attachment added: Fix broken filename when spaces appear in the name.
