2024-10-24 Thread Roman Valov
Here is a proposed patch. It changes the action when all the conditions
are met from "do nothing" to "prefer wayland". Hence even if nvidia_drm
event was processed first and opted to "prefer xorg", further processing
of events will override the preference.

[Bug 2062128] Re: Booting with nvidia proprietary drivers 550.67 results in gdm3 being displayed on X11 rather than Wayland

2024-10-24 Thread Roman Valov
Hey folks. Have the same issue on my setup on a laptop with hybrid
graphics. On jammy and oracular gdm3 is driven by wayland but noble
tends to run gdm3 driven by xorg. However in rare cases it was driven by
wayland (as intended).

I've made an investigation and realized that udev rules for gdm
(/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules) are supposed to make some checks in
order to choose xorg or wayland as a backend. Ubuntu uses patched rules
file. In an upstream version the rules disable wayland once several
conditions are met. The conditions are expected to be fulfilled by
different udev events. Hence wayland only disabled when all of the
required events processed and all of the conditions are persisted (as
files in /var/run/udev/).

In Ubuntu's version the rules supposed to enable wayland when those
conditions are met (indeed rules "doesn't disable wayland" by virtually
doing nothing in case as compared to other flow where wayland is
disabled). The problem with the patched version is that it makes the
check bound to the order of udev events (which is not guaranteed). I.e.
on my setup event for nvidia_drm processed prior to other events from
i915. As a result the wayland is disabled first when processing
nvidia_drm event and then when all conditions are actually met nothing
happens.

Thanks, but I can't check. The Wayland session is no longer available, this
is apparently another bug. gdm3/custom.conf wayland is forcibly enabled and
udev gdm.rules allows wayland . However, gdm refers to the incorrect value
of XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP=x11. I haven't found what sets this environment
variable yet... but it doesn't look like it's a video driver.

installs fine now even though libzvbi0 can't be installed.

[Bug 2059651] Re: network-manager gets uninstalled on apt full-upgrade

2024-03-28 Thread Roman
Temporary bypass:
wget
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/n/network-manager/network-manager_1.45.90-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb
dpkg --force-all -i network-manager_1.45.90-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb

dpkg output on my system:
Preparing to unpack network-manager_1.45.90-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb ...
Unpacking network-manager (1.45.90-1ubuntu1) over (1.45.90-1ubuntu1) ...
dpkg: network-manager: dependency problems, but configuring anyway as you
requested:
 network-manager depends on libnm0 (= 1.45.90-1ubuntu1); however:
Version of libnm0:amd64 on system is 1.45.90-1ubuntu3.
Setting up network-manager (1.45.90-1ubuntu1) ...
...

After that everything works fine.

Did the same with network-manager-openvpn and network-manager-openvpn-
gnome to bring back VPN, also works.

Btw, after full-upgrade I have a ton (114) of "not gonna be installed"
packages in apt output because some libs are missing from repos, seems
something went wrong when uploading new packages.

[Bug 2059651] Re: network-manager gets uninstalled on apt full-upgrade

2024-03-28 Thread Roman
Guess it uninstalls network-manager to install new version but new
version can't be installed because it depends on libnetplan1 which is
missing from repos.

https://packages.ubuntu.com/noble/network-manager currently shows
[depends on] libnetplan1 (>= 0.106)
Package not available

You can't simply install previous version 1.45.90-1ubuntu1, which still
shows in `apt show network-manager`, because its dependency libnm0 of
the same version is already missing from repos.

[Bug 2058693] Re: NetworkManager crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message_expr()

2024-03-21 Thread Roman
All reports from my machine are getting this "core dump is invalid"
messages, why? It is frustrating when you try to properly report bugs
just to get them automatically closed as invalid.

Also seems that this robot automatically removes dumps so you can't even
see them afterwards?

I tried to contact Brian via email without respond, let's try ping him
here somehow - not sure how this is done properly.

To fix this issue, all architectures should build without atk-wrapper,
not only i386

Try to upgrade
apt install openjdk-8-jre-headless

[Bug 2058261] Re: cups-browsed crashed with SIGSEGV in httpAddrFamily()

2024-03-18 Thread Roman
What does it mean that crash report can't be processed? Are there any
logs of this processing? I did not do anything special, system reported
a crash and I hit "send". There is no coredump attached, is it
considered "invalid"?

[Bug 2056506] Re: ubuntu-dock 89 crashes on gnome-shell 45 with signal 6 when right clicking on the dock [clutter_actor_dispose: assertion failed: (priv->parent == NULL)]

2024-03-14 Thread Roman
You are right, sorry. I rebooted the machine because gnome got stuck,
got a "do you want to send crash info", and thought that another crash
occurred after reboot, but actually it was before reboot.

While checking logs of current boot I saw a line that I don't understand:
Mar 14 19:19:16 gnome-shell[2140]: Extension ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com already
installed in /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com.
/usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com will not be loaded

Is it expected? The same is written about all other system plugins.

In autostart, I have exactly one file - Telegram, installed from
https://flathub.org/apps/org.telegram.desktop:

$ cat ~/.config/autostart/org.telegram.desktop.desktop

Name=org.telegram.desktop
Exec=flatpak run --command=telegram-desktop org.telegram.desktop -autostart
X-Flatpak=org.telegram.desktop

~/.local/share/applications has one .desktop file without Icon= in it, honestly
I am not sure where did it even come from:

$ cat ~/.local/share/applications/userapp-Firefox-YMM3I2.desktop

[Bug 1948882] Re: PulseEffects does not properly initialize on startup

2022-03-16 Thread Roman
An update: I've noticed that my PE had the button "Global Bypass"
occasionally activated (somehow without my consent), and after
unpressing it the entire chain now works again. But the initial bug is
unfortunately there, that is PE does not get activated on sturtup
properly. So in 22.04 devel, the bug is still there.

[Bug 1948882] Re: PulseEffects does not properly initialize on startup

2022-03-16 Thread Roman
OK, in devel 22.04 the sound restored after an update, though PE does
not actually perform any transformation from the chain... I just hope
that after all it will be fixed in the final release, and will work well
like it worked in 20.04... If not it seems we have to use the flatpak
version.

[Bug 1948882] Re: PulseEffects does not properly initialize on startup

2022-03-14 Thread Roman
After a recent daily update Pulseeffects just stopped working entirely
(literal silence from the PE(apps) stream). No idea if this is related
to this bug in any way. Difficult to say which package update was
responsible for that, seemingly nothing obviously related. I tried to
upgrade the system to the current development realese of 22.04, and the
same the issue remains.

[Bug 1962718] [NEW] Firefox snap crashes on every upgrade

2022-03-02 Thread Roman Shipovskij
Public bug reported:

Firefox snap package crashes every time on upgrade which cause data
loss, it disappear from the panel but still running on unknown workspace

All this is very annoying to the average user and gives a negative
impression of using Ubuntu

I think Firefox snap is not ready for using in LTS release by default
without an alternative to install .deb package

Steps to reproduce:
1) Run Firefox snap
2) Upgrade from candidate channel: sudo snap refresh firefox --candidate
3) Try to open a new tab or click on Firefox icon on panel

Current behaviour:
Firefox crashes or closes

Expected behaviour:
Firefox should notify user that restart is required, as in .deb case

[Bug 1962021] Re: Make the deb package install the firefox snap

2022-02-28 Thread Roman Shipovskij
Firefox Snap package still does not work properly. It crashes every time
on upgrade which cause data loss, it disappear from the panel but still
running on unknown workspace...

All this is very annoying to the average user and gives a negative
impression of using Ubuntu.

I think Firefox Snap is not ready for using in LTS release by default.

The same situation with Chromium Snap package, I had to switch to Google
Chrome .deb package because I tired from Chromium Snap problems.

P.S. All Snap packages which I tried to use have the same issues, I'm
tired of riding on square wheels when everyone is riding on round ones.

Changing this to d-conf because its downgrade helps to eliminate the
issue

[Bug 1948882] Re: PulseEffects does not properly initialize on startup

2022-01-14 Thread Roman
I found the root issue and a workaround. Pulseeffects package in Impish
is of the same version as in Hirsute 4.8.4-1, so it cannot be the direct
cause. But the issue is eliminated by downgrading the following four
packages from their Impish version 0.40.0-1 to the Hirsute version
0.38.0-2:

dconf-gsettings-backend dconf-service dconf-cli libdconf1

So it seems that either newer DConf has a bug or PulseEffects should be
updated to handle some interface changes in DConf.

[Bug 1948882] [NEW] PulseEffects does not properly initialize on startup

2021-10-26 Thread Roman
Public bug reported:

In KUbuntu 21.10, PulseEffects no longer initializes its effects chain
on startup. I usually use only Equalizer, so when I log into KDE, this
equalizer does not get activated. To ativate it I need (i) start
PulseEffects GUI, (ii) untic and tic again the "Equalizer" box. This is
rarher annoying sequence that I have to repeat each time I login.

Previousy, in ubuntu 21.04, all this was unnecessary. PluseEffets just
worked immediately after logging in, without any additional actions. I
would expect the same behaviour in 21.10.

[Bug 1948877] Re: Bluetooth headphones media buttons no longer work

Minor correction: in previous ubuntu I meant 21.04 of course.

Also, I checked the output of hcidump - it remains empty, no reaction to
any media keys.

[Bug 1948877] [NEW] Bluetooth headphones media buttons no longer work

2021-10-26 Thread Roman
Public bug reported:

In KUbuntu 21.10, most media buttons in my bluetooth headphones stopped
working. This includes the "play/pause" button, "play next" (calls after
long press of volume increase), and "play previous" (long press of
volume decrease). The volume +/- buttons themselves are working, but
this seemingly is implemented entirely in the headphones and does not
require any communication over bluetooth.

In previous ubuntu (20.04) these buttons worked, and I expect them
working.

My headset is Qumo Accord 3.

Here is output of "inxi -Eaz" in terminal:

Bluetooth: Device-1: Realtek Bluetooth Radio type: USB driver: btusb v: 0.8
bus-ID: 1-7:3 chip-ID: 0bda:b008 class-ID: e001

park link-mode: slave accept
service-classes: rendering, capturing, object transfer, audio,

Some possible workarounds that I found suggest to "modprobe uinput", but
the uinput module does not get loaded (lsmod does not list it even after
modprobe'ing).

[Bug 1863801] Re: [snap] After deleting the cache, chromium crashes when file picker is called to upload files or folders

2021-10-18 Thread Roman Valov
I have encountered a similar issue on downgrade of snap package and workaround
does work.
Previously had chromium 94 installed. Due to issues with top-bar rendering
downgraded chromium to version 93. Got issues with any attempt to
upload/download file. Running:

rm ~/snap/chromium/current/.last_revision

fixed the issue
