[Bug 2077254] Re: GUI is killed and returns back to login screen

2024-08-19 Thread Rudolf
There is no extensions folder in the specified directory, so I don't think
there aren't any installed.
As I said the thing happens when too many things are open (many tabs and a VM
running).
I am just arguing that killing the whole GUI environment seems wrong to me..

[Bug 2077254] [NEW] GUI crashes and returns back to login screen

2024-08-18 Thread Rudolf
Public bug reported:

When too many applications are running and RAM gets full, the OS evicts the
most RAM intensive application and kills it. Since anything runs below GNOME in
the process hierarchy, GNOME is selected and killed. When it restarts I am back
at the login screen.
This is very annoying since all my work is gone. I guess it is a bug since the
RAM intensive application itself should be killed and now my whole desktop
environment.

[Bug 2067052] Re: snmpinform sends PDUs containing a GET request SNMP_MSG_GET

2024-05-31 Thread Rudolf
Hello Sergio,

Thank you for your answer. I would also consider myself as being
comfortable with source code. But to be honest, I am quite new to the
net-snmp world and have very little experience, so maybe the blame is on
me and I understand something wrong.

I setup a trap receiver similar to the snmptrapd (using
netsnmp_transport_open_server and snmp_add):
For receiving traps the callback used is:
int process(int op, netsnmp_session* session, int reqid, netsnmp_pdu* rawPDU,
void* magic);

When sending traps or informs using version 3 of the protocol, I can
cleary see that something is processed in my pre_parse and post_parse
functions containing a PDU with command 0 or 160.

Depending on the isAuthoritative value of the created session the PDU gets
either passed to my process function or not.
But why am I receiving a GET PDU in the first place instead of a version 3
TRAP/INFORM ?
Is this correct and I am doing something wrong when it comes to receiving
version 3 traps, or is this behavior wrong?

If I am wrong here, then sorry for wasting your time. Maybe someone
could then tell me how to properly receive version 3 traps/informs.

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 2067052] Re: snmpinform sends PDUs containing a GET request SNMP_MSG_GET

2024-05-24 Thread Rudolf
** Description changed:

I am writing a Trap Receiver and was not able to receive an INFORM. I figured
out that the command code contained in the PDU was not the 166 as it should be
but I received 160.
I thought that maybe I did something wrong, but when i used another program
(mibbrowser) to send an inform trap, i got the correct code of 166.
+ I then figured out, that this behaviour only happens when version 3 is used.
Maybe I am getting something wrong but I really think that this is a bug in
the package shipped with Ubuntu and I think that should really not be the case.

therefore no update from my side, and no objection to kick my bug report

@Andrea I might not send my hardware, but is there any other information I can

Same issue with Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Gen 2, AMD Ryzen 7 4700u with radeon

stable workaround: start BIOS, exit with SAVE=YES (don't need to change
anything).
A (better) solution would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

[Bug 1787857] Re: USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

2021-06-08 Thread Rudolf Schmidt
In my case with Parrot Linux it was a case of Interrupt conflicts.
IRQ#18 kept being disabled by the system. After disabling the EHCI
Handoff in the BIOS,ehci_hcd:usb1 was replaced with ehci_hcd:usb2 and
the mouse lag after a random period of time stopped.

You can view your interrupt assignments with:
cat /proc/interrupts

Mine changed from:
18: IO-APIC 18-fasteoi ehci_hcd:usb1, pata_jmicron, ata_piix, uhci_hcd:usb8
to:
18: IO-APIC 18-fasteoi ehci_hcd:usb2, pata_jmicron, ata_piix, uhci_hcd:usb8

And the problem was resolved.

[Bug 1913437] [NEW] apt-get installs grub-pc package 2.02-2ubuntu8.21 without errors, but the machine fails to boot

2021-01-27 Thread Rudolf Visagie
Public bug reported:

We are creating AWS AMIs using an EBS surrogate and running this command
which completes successfully without any errors (only specific package
shown):

Distribution: bionic

apt-get install -y --no-install-recommends grub-pc

Afterwards when we check the /grub directory it is incomplete:

ls -l grub/
total 2348
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 712 Jan 26 08:18 gfxblacklist.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2397557 Jan 26 08:18 unicode.pf2

An instance created using the AMI also fails to boot with the following
error:

No bootable disk

The grub-pc version installed is 2.02-2ubuntu8.21.

If we install grub manually using grub-install and grub-mkconfig it
works with the same version (2.02-2ubuntu8.21).

The above mentioned automated AMI creation process running apt-get also
works if we downgrade to version 2.02-2ubuntu8.17.

Previously we created images with version 2.02-2ubuntu8.18 (as that was
the current version at the time) and it worked perfectly, but we noticed
that this has been removed from the Ubuntu archive:
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/grub2/ (only
2.02-2ubuntu8.17 and 2.02-2ubuntu8.21 still available).

[Bug 1880114] [NEW] Syntax error in LayoutLoaderSVG.py shipped with this package

2020-05-22 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
Public bug reported:

During upgrade from 19.10 to 20.04 I saw an error message flying by:

/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/Onboard/LayoutLoaderSVG.py in line 447

There currently is the following code:

raise Exceptions.LayoutFileError("Unrecognized modifier %s in" \
"definition of %s" (strerror, full_id))

Obviously this should be:

raise Exceptions.LayoutFileError("Unrecognized modifier {} in" \
"definition of {}".format(strerror, full_id))

[Bug 1850127] Re: Unable to print with Brother printer since upgrade to Ubuntu 19.10

2019-11-07 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
I could resolve this issue by upgrading the printer firmware to latest
version 1.40. No idea, why Ubuntu 19.04 printed happily with older
printer firmware, but as of Ubuntu 19.10 new printer firmware (can be
installed through printer web interface) is needed.

[Bug 1850127] [NEW] Unable to print with Brother printer since upgrade to Ubuntu 19.10

2019-10-28 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
Public bug reported:

I have recently bought a new color laser printer (Brother HL-L8260CDW),
which is connected through wLAN. It works like a charm under Ubuntu
19.04, but refuses to print since the upgrade to stock Ubuntu 19.10. I
can reach it via ping and through its HTTP config page from the same
computer.

During my collection of relevant bug information I discovered the
following error messages:

1. Some print filter was unable to grep
/etc/cups/ppd/Brother_HL_L8260CDW_series.ppd
This file was rw for user "root" and r for group "lp", but not accessible
to others.
I have made it world readable for testing purposes, but I still can't print.

2. I checked /var/log/syslog for app-armour errors but found none which would
be related
to cups and/or printing

3. After fixing the permission issue, the new error message is "File \'\' not
found" and
"Unable to add document to print job.", both of which are too cryptic for
me to dig
further into this by myself.

Attached to this bug report I send the following pieces of information:
- output from "/usr/lib/cups/backend/snmp 10.0.0.14" (snmp.txt)
- output from "lpinfo -v" (lpinfo.txt)
- output from "avahi-browse -a -v -t -r" and "avahi-browse -a -v -c -r"
(avahi.txt)

[Bug 1836038] [NEW] Reference to missing slider-*-backdrop assets

2019-07-10 Thread Rudolf Troger
Public bug reported:

There are PNG-files missing in the package but referenced in gtk.css for
Breeze light and dark theme. This causes a buggy behaviour with places
bookmarks in the Firefox Save-As-Dialog (probably within other
applications using the dialog, too).

In the theme folders:

/usr/share/themes/Breeze/assets/
/usr/share/themes/Breeze-Dark/assets/

(at least) following files are missing:

scrollbar-trough-vertical-backdrop.png
scrollbar-trough-vertical-backd...@2.png
scrollbar-trough-horizontal-backdrop.png
scrollbar-trough-horizontal-backd...@2.png
scrollbar-slider-vertical-backdrop.png
scrollbar-slider-vertical-backd...@2.png
scrollbar-slider-horizontal-backdrop.png
scrollbar-slider-horizontal-backd...@2.png

Effects: In Firefox, when "saving as" a file, it is not possible to add
"Other Locations" in the dialog by dragging a folder to the locations
bar. The bookmark is not created and the console outputs an error:

(/usr/lib/firefox/firefox:3660): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading image
'file:///usr/share/themes/Breeze/assets/scrollbar-trough-vertical-
backdrop.png': Error opening file: file or directory not found

(/usr/lib/firefox/firefox:3660): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading image
'file:///usr/share/themes/Breeze/assets/scrollbar-slider-vertical-
backdrop.png': Error opening file: file or directory not found

Expected: files should be included, no error message. Users should be able to
use the breeze-light or breeze-dark theme without effects to the functionality
of "save as" dialog window.

Release: Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS
gtk3-engines-breeze: 5.14.0-0xneon+16.04+xenial+build74

Workaround: My workaround to enable adding "other locations" in Firefox
"save as"-dialog is switching the "Desktop Theme" to "Breeze" - not
"Breeze Light" or "Breeze Dark" - in the kde system settings.

[Bug 810622]

2018-12-10 Thread Rudolf-gutten
Hello All,

I have the same issue since TB 45.0 - I am using several calendars: Exchange,
Google, and default TB.
If an event invitation arrives (from Exchange account), I have buttons to
Accept, Decline, etc, but event is saves under default calendar, not to the
Exchange one.

I'd like to save events to Exchange calendar by default, or at least to
choose which calendar the invitation is going to be applied.

Is there a workaround for this ?

Thanks a lot, Rudolf

[Bug 1739086] [NEW] wondershaper error ruins internet speed

2017-12-19 Thread Rudolf
Public bug reported:

1. Ubuntu 17.10
2. wondershaper 1.1a-8
3. I expected the software to limit the network bandwidth to the given values-
4. Instead I got following error message:
sudo wondershaper enp3s0 500 100

After running the command with this error, the internet speed gets set
to an arbitrary very low amount. I only figured this out with speedtest,
before and after the command (reboot makes everything fine).

[Bug 1719312] [NEW] qtcreator main menu invisible/inaccessible after ui designer session

2017-09-25 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
Public bug reported:

As soon as I edit the ui designer page of qtcreator, the title menu
becomes invisible and inaccessible. It does not even reappear after I
leave ui designer page, a window resize also doesn't help, restarting
qtcreator brings everything back to normal until I enter ui design mode
the next time.

No obvious error messages are shown if I start and run qtcreator from the
command line. The system is fully updated and uses stock version of all
relevant binaries, libraries, and config files.
The command 'lsb_release -rd' returns:
Description:Ubuntu 17.04
Release:17.04

The command 'apt-cache policy qtcreator' returns:
qtcreator:
  Installed: 4.1.0-3ubuntu1
  Candidate: 4.1.0-3ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 4.1.0-3ubuntu1 500
500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu zesty/universe amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

The problem already exists with minimal projects, i.e. I can reproduce it by
starting qtcreator, creating a new 'QT Widgets Application', using the default
values in all further input fields until the project is created, then double
clicking on mainwindow.ui in the file browser on the left hand side. As soon as
the ui designer has started, the menu is gone until the next restart of
qtcreator.

Expected behavior: regardless of UI actions I have a fully populated
menu in the title bar which becomes visible as soon as I hover the mouse
pointer over the title bar of the qtcreator window.

Observed behavior: after performing the actions stated above, I still
have a window title bar with window manager decoration, the qtcreator
menu, however, is gone.

[Bug 1584533] Re: Lenovo X220 unable to wlan after resume from sleep

2016-06-17 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
In the mean time, there was a linux kernel upgrade in Ubuntu 16.04, and
whatever that kernel changed, I have not had connection failure ever
since. I would therefore cautiously mark this issue resolved for now.

About the suggested BIOS upgrade: there appears to be something messed
up on Lenovo's webpage: while version 1.42 is stated as available, the
download links provided on that page will provide version 1.40. One has
to guess the correct download URL to access the most recent BIOS
version:

BIOS version 1.42:
https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj27us.exe

[Bug 1590109] Re: package fonts-droid 1:4.3-3ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: cannot copy extracted data for './usr/share/fonts/truetype/droid/DroidSansJapanese.ttf' to '/usr/share/fonts/truetype/dr

2016-06-08 Thread rudolf vijlbrief
Dear Gunnar

The solution you told me to do did not work.

I think its best that i told you the hole story what happens to my
laptop a Acer Aspire E1-570.

2 weeks ago i was starting up my laptop when the energy cable shoot lose from
the laptop and ubuntu crashes. When i was trying to start up again i did't not
see my background and saw just the following tekstlines. 1 to start up
ubuntu(when I try this i got a eror "reading from sector 0x9b6b38 'Hb0'fail)
the second tekst line was to go in to ubuntu advance(It was then possible to
run a recover program)
The 3rd tekstline was to go directly to the BIOS.

I could not reinstal ubuntu becaus the laptop did not see my dvdplayer
and usb stick.

My brother said the te sector failor was probely a harddisk error.

The strange thing was that i could see by using the rootcommand to show
the directory on the harddisk my tekstfiles

So I thought that my harddisk was not destroyed. But maybe have sum bad
sectors

I ask my brother if hy could somehow reinstal ubuntu.
He found out that the bios boot command was standing on UEFI instead of Lagacy.

Now he could install ubuntu.
The nex problem that came up was that it was not possible to get in to ubuntu,
Ubuntu ask for a password and my password faild.

So i reinstall ubuntu but now i get problems with some packages like the
font package.

Tonight i reinstall ubuntu again in the hope that it would solve my problems
but it stil cannot reinstal some packages.

So my question to you(and i hope my english is got enough)

Do I have some bad sectors on my harddisk and if so how do i solve this.
Is there a commandline to check de sectors on my harddisk like windows
have.

Or do you have any idea what could be the problems and how to solve it.

Thanx for your time
Greetings
Rudolf

[Bug 1584533] Re: Lenovo X220 unable to wlan after resume from sleep

2016-06-07 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
Dear Christopher, thanks for your feedback. Following your suggestion I
upgraded to the latest BIOS version provided by Lenovo, here is the
output from this 'sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s
bios-release-date' line:

8DET70WW (1.40 )

Sadly, there was no improvement on the bug, I still get situations where
my laptop won't connect top WLAN and will refuse any attempts to force
it to short of a reboot.

[Bug 1584533] Re: Lenovo X220 unable to wlan after resume from sleep

2016-05-24 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
Thanks for your reply, before I followed your recommended steps I did a
system upgrade as recommended by ubuntu update manager. Since this also
updated systemd which is AFAIK pretty basic to the system, I tested both
after the upgrade AND after the switch to this mainline kernel you
recommended. Behavior became much stranger with the regular system
update, and in both cases (i.e. ubuntu kernel and mainline kernel) the
system behaved more or less the same, as far as wlan is concerned:

- After a reboot everything looks normal, wlan comes on even before
login, and stays intact after login. network manager applet in top bar
shows wlan networks plus the one I am connected to.

- After a sleep/wakeup, network manager shows loss of wlan connection.
No existing wlan networks are shown in wireless network list. Opening
"connect to hidden network" menu lists all networks I ever connected to,
but will not allow me to hit connect with any of them in the list,
connect button is grayed out.

- Now here comes the freaky part: in SOME of these instances I am
actually connected to my home wlan! This is not shown directly in
network manager, only after opening connection information window one
can see that there is a virbr0 device, and an active wlan0 device.

After many reboots and sleep/wakeup cycles with both kernels (ubuntu and
mainline), I can state that there is about a 50% likelyhood that wlan
becomes active, and that if wlan is active after one sleep/wakeup cycle,
chances are high that it will work in consecutive sleep/wakeup cycles.
In two cases (one for each kernel) I could create a special case: wlan
active after reboot, active again after sleep/wakeup, then inactive
after next sleep/wakeup. Since these cases yield a very compact dmesg
file, I post both of them here.

I hope this helps pinning down the issue, please let me know if you need
further data or tests.

Cheers,

Rudi

[Bug 1584533] [NEW] Lenovo X220 unable to wlan after resume from sleep

2016-05-22 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04, and now whenever I wake up my laptop
from sleep (hibernate doesn't work due to encrypted home directory), I
am unable to connect to any wlan network. After a hot reboot or cold
start everything is back to normal.

Network manager would allow me to select already known wlan networks
through "connect to hidden network", however, it would not allow me to
establish the actual connection (connect button never becomes active).

I will attach four files to this bug report:

1. dmesg-pastreboot: dmesg after a hot reboot
2. dmesg-pastsleep: dmesg after wakeup from sleep
3. syslog-pastreboot: syslog snippet from timeframe after reboot
4. syslog-pastsleep: syslog snippet from timeframe after wakeup from sleep

Please let me know, if you need any further data or info.

[Bug 918377] Re: UpgradeStatus: in bug-reports wrong

2016-04-12 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
I can confirm, that this bug is still present in Ubuntu 15.10: Upon
system start, a crash of 'mediascanner-service-2.0' was reported, and
the crash dialog claimed that mediascanner package was never upgraded
since Ubuntu 11.04, which was the Ubuntu version originally installed
when I got my laptop. Obviously I did all the upgrades all the way up to
15.10 in the meantime, and synaptic confirmed that the 15.10 version of
mediascanner-2.0 is installed. The file /usr/bin/mediascanner-
service-2.0 is shown in the contents of mediascanner-2.0 package, and
the actual file shows a change date of September 2015, so it obviously
didn't come with Ubuntu 11.04.

** Description changed:

  Description: Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS
  Release: 14.04
  linux-image-3.16.0-50-generic:
Installed: 3.16.0-50.67~14.04.1

At or during accessing the filesystem on an external USB drive, the kernel
bug (see below) occured.
Afterwards, an "ls" did not react, i.e. hangs until closing the terminal.
The drive itself seems to be ok, since it passes a SMART check.
The filesystem was created by using the standard Ubuntu 14.04 encryption
mechanism (LUKS).

[Bug 1442840] Re: Erase disk fails with error " wipefs: error: /dev/sdb1: probing initialization failed: No such file or directory"

2015-11-10 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
I think I read somewhere, that manually invoking the failed command
allows the user to proceed. In the case of the original problem report
this would be the following command:

 wipefs -a /dev/sdb1

Make sure you pass the correct partition to this command, or you will
lose data on whatever device you wiped instead!!! The correct device is
the first partition on whatever device is supposed to become a bootable
device, usually the device reported in the error message. You need to
invoke it with sudo if you aren't already root.

The work around worked for me at least. Since the underlying problem
appears to be a race condition, a few retries may help here it it
doesn't work right away. And yes, the bug is present in Ubuntu 15.10,
too :(

[Bug 1505558] [NEW] Unable to access filesystem (LUKS, USB HDD)

2015-10-13 Thread Rudolf Körner
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS
Release:14.04
linux-image-3.16.0-50-generic:
  Installed: 3.16.0-50.67~14.04.1

At or during accessing the filesystem on an external USB drive, the kernel bug
(see below) occured.
Afterwards, an "ls" did not react, i.e. hangs until closing the terminal.
The drive itself seems to be ok, since it passes a SMART check.
The filesystem was created by using the standard Ubuntu 14.04 encryption
mechanism (LUKS).

[Bug 1499726] Re: Unable to disable SMART for Corsair Neutron GTX SSD

2015-10-12 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

During every boot sequence, SMART commands are sent to this SSD, causing
a minute long hang, until a kernel error message appears, telling me
that some SMART command failed. Since SSDs are not the target audience
for SMART checks anyway, I wanted to disable smart checks through gnome-
  disk tool.

When I tried to disable SMART for this disk, I got the following error
message:

===
Error sending ATA command SMART, sub-command DISABLE OPERATIONS: ATA command
failed: error=0x04 count=0x00 status=0x51 (g-io-error-quark,0)

===

After closing the error dialog, SMART switch in the window is turned
back on :( All I wanted was disable SMART checks during boot time for
  this disk

The kernel message (taken from dmesg output) regarding SMART and the SSD at
boot time is as follows:

===

[Bug 1404900] Re: qtcreator hangs when copying to and pasting from clipboard

2015-09-29 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
Short update: my initial optimism was unfortunately unfounded, the bug
exists as it has for a long time now. Helgefan's description seems to be
accurate: the problem arises when one presses Ctrl and then hovers over
a symbol. Ctrl+click on that symbol immediately proceeds to the
declaration of this symbol, but hovering with the mouse cursor causes
the symbol text to change color to blue and underlined, and the system
will hang with 100% CPU load for dozens of seconds.

It would be very helpful if I could learn whether Ctrl+mouse hover
should trigger some action, what this action is supposed to be, and
whether this trigger can be configured out of my system somehow.

[Bug 1404900] Re: qtcreator hangs when copying to and pasting from clipboard

2015-09-28 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
Just wanted to report that this problem is still present in the
qtcreator version provided by KUbuntu 15.04, but it shows up in a less
annoying way now: Copy&Paste, and many similar operations no longer
produce the hang, but holding down Ctrl and hovering the mouse over some
code parts still causes minute long hangs (with 100% CPU load on one
core).

[Bug 1499717] [NEW] Session switching broken

2015-09-25 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
Public bug reported:

After I switch between sessions (switch to new user session via
Kstart->leave->switch_user, but also when switching to text console via
Ctrl+Alt+F1), and after I try to go back to the original session, the
screen is completely garbled, i.e. the screen is filled with blinking
black&white triangles of all shapes and sizes, sometimes there is a
functional mouse cursor.

Here are the things I tried in order to narrow down the issue:

- In system settings (Display and Monitor ---> Compositor ---> Rendering
Backend) I switched from OpenGL 3.1 to OpenGL 2.0
- I changed display drivers from nvidia-346 to nvidia-346-updates
- I disabled screen lock
- I disabled virtual desktops

Neither of the above actions improved matters.

Here are the things which I also noticed:

- Restarting sddm (sudo service sddm stop) restores a functioning login screen
- Typing Ctrl+Alt+F1 on the login screen, and then Alt+F7 to go back gives me a
working login screen
- Killing kwin_x11 kills the window decorations, but restores a working screen
image.
- I frequently saw kwin running at 100% system load, which I vaguely remember
to be an old issue with kwin, it may be unrelated to my current woes
- nothing of value shows up in dmesg

The above points tell me, that this is not a graphics driver issue, but
one in kwin, but obviously I may be wrong. If so, please let me know. I
am more than willing to test debug versions of kwin, self compiled if
necessary, or whatever it takes to track down the root issue.

[Bug 1497404] [NEW] Virtual desktop pager configuration confusing

2015-09-18 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
Public bug reported:

When I upgraded to Kubuntu Vivid Vervet, for some reason no virtual
desktops were configured. My first take was an attempt to install the
virtual desktop pager into the KDE control panel. Whenever I added a
desktop pager widget to the panel, I saw a brief jerk in the panel,
after which it returned to its original state, i.e… without desktop
pager. Since I tried to trace debug logs and other, I did this several
time.

Once I found the correct way to configure virtual desktops, I configured
6 virtual desktops on my screen, and all of a sudden a whole barrage of
dektop pager widgets appeared in my KDE panel. While this is no crash, I
would call it highly confusing and irritating to anyone who is not
fluent in KDE configuration.

The behaviour described above is fully repeatable. Use the System
Settings ---> Desktop Behaviour menu to configure just one virtual
desktop, watch the desktop pager disappear from KDE panel. Assume (like
I did) "oh, I need a desktop pager" and add a desktop pager widget to
your KDE panel. Since this has no effect, do this a few times. Then go
back and configure more than one virtual desktops and watch your KDE
panel. Not nice.

>From a pure software view, I can fully understand how this came about:
if there are no virtual desktops, there it no point in wasting space for
a desktop pager. At the same time the KDE panel configuration should
allow to add as many panels as one wants, so no fault there. From a
usability standpoint it's still awful that way, though!

Here is my suggestion how to solve this:
- change the virtual desktop pager widget such that it shows a tiny icon even
if there are no virtual desktops. If people don't want to dedicate space to
this widget, it's easy to remove from the panel anyway.
- another advantage of this 'always on' pager widget would be that one could
start with one desktop and use that widget to add more virtual desktops. Right
now this is not possible because there is no widget for one desktop.
- a more elegant version would be to add a "add virtual desktop" button into
that KDE panel menu which holds the less frequently needed buttons (looks like
an arrow head pointing up in my panel). Such a button would have saved me quite
some time searching for the virtual desktop pager. This would also alleviate
some confusion if one plays with "remove virtual desktop" until all but one are
gone - and the pager disappears, rendering the user unable to go back.
- if all this is deemed impossible, then please preconfigure at least two
virtual desktops, such that novice users don't assume "oh, the new KDE doesn't
yet support virtual desktops, bummer!".

Here is the requested info, in case apport didn't add it already:

File .xsession-errors is unaware of any issue related to this crash, so
this crash may start very early in the boot process. Sadly, no

[Bug 1341746] Re: gitk doesn't start returning 'wish: not found'

2015-08-11 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
I also had this problem (Ubuntu 15.04) and noticed, that I had
/usr/bin/wish8.6, but no /usr/bin/wish. Creating a soft link 'wish'
pointing to wish8.6 solved the issue. I assume that the method laid out
in #3 effectively does the same thing.

I wonder whether a broken tk package upgrade caused this issue ...

[Bug 1404900] Re: qtcreator hangs when copying to and pasting from clipboard

2015-07-25 Thread Rudolf Leitgeb
Just wanted to provide some further info in case it makes tracking down the
issue easier:
* The issue is still present on my desktop PC
* I work on the same qtcreator projects on a Thinkpad X220 with Intel graphics
and Gnome and this issue does not happen there.
* The hang also happens when I hit Ctrl+S to save a file, therefore I thinks
it's rather related to Ctrl-key than clipboard action. The hang does not appear
with short cuts which do not depend on Ctrl-key, like Alt+G C for git commit.

[Bug 623438] Re: Font size not correct in merged sandvich PDF

2015-07-22 Thread Rudolf
Many thanks to George Chriss! (see above)

My workaround based on his description:
Modify the created hocr by XSLT (see below). Then using hocr2pdf 0.8.9 - and
the textboxes are placed (almost) correctly.

$ tesseract image.tif ocr_file hocr
$ xsltproc -html -nonet -novalid -o ocr_fixed.hocr fix-hocr.xsl ocr_file.hocr
$ hocr2pdf -i image.tif -o searchable.pdf https://bugs.launchpad.net/cuneiform-linux/+bug/623438/+attachment/4432658/+files/fix-hocr.xsl

Indeed *extremely* annoying - at renaming a file and other occasions.

[Bug 1461277] Re: kde shows the animated splash screen when loading and then a black screen with no more action possible

2015-06-02 Thread Rudolf Göldner
Christopher M. Penalver, thank you for your advice, but it is not possible to
perform it.
What have I done?

start kubuntu 15.04
when freezing with a black screen: Ctrl + Alt + F1
cd /var/crash && sudo rm *; etc
startx
Ctrl+Alt+F1
ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_ksplashqml.1000.crash
S (for sending)

But there is no browser to provide more details.

2015-06-02 Thread Rudolf Göldner
Public bug reported:

kubuntu 15.04

I made some adaptions to the favorite menue. Then I used System Settings to fit
Screen Locking
and changed Virtual Desktops to three.
After restart: FREEZE.

I made this bug report with kubuntu 14.10. I attach the crash file
because it wasn' t sent automatically.

Christopher M. Penalver, I have done a reinstall.
kubuntu 15.04 worked fine.

I did the software updates and switched to the nvidia driver. Restart
ok.

I made some adaptions to the favorite menue. Then I used System Settings to
fit Screen Locking
and changed Virtual Desktops to three.
After restart: XFREEZE.
