[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2014-03-28 Thread Russell McOrmond
We're running qemu-kvm 1.0+noroms-0ubuntu14.13 on a 12.04.4 LTS with KVM
based 12.04.4 LTS virtual machines , and have observed this problem.
We have been using the regular software bridges on many machines, and
have only noticed the problem on one of our newest servers.

Using virtio devices we get the discussed lockups.

Using e1000 we get no lockups, but this is a much lower performing
interface and thus we have performance issues. We have NFS and other
traffic between VMs and the host, so need more than the GigE that we
have to external hosts.

I note above that this bug was considered fixed by qemu-kvm - 1.0
+noroms-0ubuntu14.3, but this appears to not be the case.

2012-07-11 Thread Russell McOrmond
Recently installed Ubuntu Precise onto a PowerEdge R210 that previously
ran Lenny. We weren't getting the errors previously.

Has anyone tried flashing new firmware? I'll be trying this next, as I
seem to remember there being some issues with mismatches between
firmware and the status utilities.

It may be bad form to reply again so quickly, but a firmware update
fixed the problem for me.

[Bug 455852] Re: Flash hangs on any cbc.ca/video site

2010-05-12 Thread Russell McOrmond
Do we have any sense when the new 10.1 r53 will be out of beta, and able
to become standard with Ubuntu/etc? It is one thing for us geeks to
know how to watch CBC videos. It is another to allow it to work for my
mother as well (I don't want custom stuff on her machine, to make
administering from remote easier).

[Bug 559881] Re: libnss3-1d 3.12.6-0ubuntu0.9.10.1 breaks ssl/fips support in firefox

2010-04-11 Thread Russell McOrmond
I downloaded libnss3-1d_3.12.6-0ubuntu0.9.10.2_i386.deb from
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-
security/+archive/ppa/+build/1685696 and now Thunderbird will launch
without the security error. I was not having the problem with Firefox,
only Thunderbird.

Note: I did not have libnss3-0d installed, only 1d.

[Bug 455852] Re: Flash hangs on any cbc.ca/video site

2009-12-11 Thread Russell McOrmond
I would think fixing their code so that people would go directly to
their site rather than through a wrapper would be a pretty high
priority. There is now code circulating (here and likely other places
now) that make it easy for less technical people to bypass the geo-
blocking.

Maybe your specific fix is a non-starter, but fixing this and keeping
their geo-blocking is likely quite easy.

[Bug 455852] Re: Flash hangs on any cbc.ca/video site

2009-12-07 Thread Russell McOrmond
I think people should also contact the people at
http://theplatform.com/contact/ as they may not even know there is a
problem. I've tried to use http://www.rogersondemand.com/ which is
advertised to use the same company, and have only seen advertisements
(no programs).

It may be appropriate to carbon copy letters to MPs to the CRTC which is
supposed to regulate interoperable standards by broadcasters. Part of
the problem is that we're still waiting for HTML5 and the latest I heard
is that the CODEC issue was never solved (IE: there wasn't an open
interoperable common denominator set).

The folks at Spark gave me the name of Jeff Ulster as someone who might

Will report back (or maybe Jeff will on this site).

[Bug 477104] Re: After 9.10 grub update can not boot into Wubi install

2009-11-15 Thread Russell McOrmond
My Bug #482195 was marked as a duplicate of this one, but I'm not sure
if it is. It is a specific edge case when using the AMD64 version of
Ubuntu and specifying installation size to 30G. If I use 32bit Ubuntu
or if I specify 29G installation size and below then everything went
fine.

[Bug 455852] Re: Flash hangs on any cbc.ca/video site

2009-10-31 Thread Russell McOrmond
I sent a note to CBC via http://www.cbc.ca/contact/ and pointed them to
this bug. I noted to them that other video sites (Such as ctv.ca -- a
competitor ;-) works fine. I would suspect the problem is coding
within their flash that has inadvertently become platform dependent.
This will be one of the many benefits of HTML5 for these types of sites
as there will be no need for flash player and all its oddball issues.

Funny -- I watch a fair number of videos at http://www.spacecast.com/ ,
but didn't notice when the CBC site broke. Guess I'm too geeky. My
favorite CBC show is audio-only http://www.cbc.ca/spark/ :-)

[Bug 459178] Re: ogrinfo assert failure: *** buffer overflow detected ***: ogrinfo terminated

2009-10-23 Thread Russell McOrmond
At http://geogratis.cgdi.gc.ca/geogratis/en/option/select.do?id=1169
there are shapefiles which represent the electoral districts of Canada,
for election years 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2008.

In 2000 it was not the same boundaries as they are now (they changed in
2003 -- and will again in 2013).

In 2004 it is the right boundaries, with only the electoral ID as data:
FED_NUM: Integer (9.0)

This worked:
ogr2ogr -s_srs ESRI::fed308.2004/fed308_a.prj -t_srs WGS84 -f KML
fed308.2004_a.kml fed308.2004/fed308_a.shp -dsco NameField=FED_NUM -dsco
DescriptionField=FED_NUM
The output KML can be browsed with Google Earth (too big for Google Maps)

In 2006 they added more information, and now ogr tools core dump with a buffer
overflow.
AREA: Real (20.5)
PERIMETER: Real (20.5)
FED308_A_: Real (11.0)
FED308_A_I: Real (11.0)
FED_NUM: Real (11.0)
ED_NAMEE: String (100.0)
ED_NAMEF: String (100.0)

In 2008 they added even more information:
AREA: Real (19.5)
PERIMETER: Real (19.5)
FED_NUM: Integer (9.0)
FED_TYPE: String (4.0)
ED_ID: Integer (7.0)
ED_NAMEE: String (100.0)
ED_NAMEF: String (100.0)
ELCT_CNT: Integer (6.0)
OBJECTID: Integer (10.0)
SHAPE_AREA: Real (19.11)
SHAPE_LEN: Real (19.11)
PARTY_WIN: String (1.0)

Here is what happens with the 2008 data:

$ ogr2ogr -s_srs ESRI::fed308.2008/fed308_a.prj -t_srs WGS84 -f KML
fed308.2008_a.kml fed308.2008/fed308_a.shp -dsco NameField=FED_NUM -dsco

Alan,

I haven't tested yet. The Ubuntu machine I have here is already running
Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic), which doesn't have packages yet
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntugis/ppa/ubuntu/dists/ . Looking forward
to adding this to my repositories as I'll likely want to follow the
latest on this desktop.

Thank you.
