[Bug 1437719] Re: [Dell Inspiron 5547] Black Screen on user switch
The fix may be in kernel 3.19.0-25.26. I did build and install this kernel and in subsequent stress testing (about 2 hours worth) was unable to reproduce the defect. It's rare for me to not encounter the defect in less than 5 minutes of stress testing - might have once made it to about 20 minutes - but never before to two hours. I'm not ready to call it fixed though just yet. To begin with I would like to get using an official build of the kernel. As previously noted I was unable to install the 14.04.3 HWE stack that contains this kernel. Here is the command I ran and the problems encountered: sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-core-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-video- all-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-vivid libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts- vivid Reading package lists... Attempted to move to the 14.04.3 HWE Stack today. The attempt failed: packages had unmet dependencies. [Bug 1437719] Re: [Dell Inspiron 5547] Black Screen on user switch
I was hesitant to install the daily build again since I felt I was being run around in circles. An acquaintance has pointed out that doing it would server a useful purpose. So I have completed that task. Once again I was unable to reproduce the issue with a live-usb containing the daily build. There were occasions when I thought the screen was going to go black - but then it did recover. And once again I did try a live-usb with 14.04.1 and was also not able to reproduce the issue: making me once again consider that it might be a configuration issue. So I looked at the parameters being used by the i915 driver. These parameters were in common between the my system and the 14.04.1 live-usb that works so well: /sys/module/i915/parameters/disable_power_well:1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/fastboot:N /sys/module/i915/parameters/invert_brightness:0 /sys/module/i915/parameters/lvds_channel_mode:0 /sys/module/i915/parameters/lvds_downclock:0 /sys/module/i915/parameters/lvds_use_ssc:-1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/modeset:-1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/panel_ignore_lid:1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/powersave:1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/prefault_disable:N /sys/module/i915/parameters/preliminary_hw_support:1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/reset:Y /sys/module/i915/parameters/semaphores:-1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/vbt_sdvo_panel_type:-1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/enable_ips:1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/enable_psr:0 /sys/module/i915/parameters/enable_hangcheck:Y These parameters seem to have been renamed: /sys/module/i915/parameters/enable_rc6:1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/enable_fbc:-1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/enable_ppgtt:1 /* Power Saving features? */ /sys/module/i915/parameters/enable_pc8:1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/pc8_timeout:5000 /* Defunct LVDS setting? *? /sys/module/i915/parameters/fbpercrtc:0 /* New parameters? */ /sys/module/i915/parameters/disable_display:N /sys/module/i915/parameters/disable_vtd_wa:N /sys/module/i915/parameters/enable_cmd_parser:1 I tried to change some of these at bootup to see if they affected the behaviour: they didn't. It seems possibly tied to power saving: on the 14.04.1 live-usb buffering seemed to work better on user switching so perhaps the system never though it was entering a power saving mode and thus never turned off the screen. Next week I will install the HWE Stack for 14.04.3 that has the Vivid kernel/drivers to see if that fixes things. My acquaintance is a retired software engineer - application level stuff on Windows and Macs. But has played with Linux a bit and even though he has never dug into drivers or kernel code he has said he would be willing to help me out (already showed me how to build the kernel). So I'll up my level interest in debugging. What next steps do you suggest? ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1437719 Title: [Dell Inspiron 5547] Black Screen on user switch To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1437719/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1437719] Re: [Dell Inspiron 5547] Black Screen on user switch
I actually found that if I selected UEFI boot instead of legacy boot I could run the live-usb stick. I was unable to reproduce the problem when running from the live-usb when trying out vivid. However it turns out that I cannot reproduce the issue when running from a live-usb loaded with trusty either. In both instances I attempted to recreate the problem by rapidly switching users repeatedly for 5 minutes - when running from my installed system I am always able to reproduce the issue in less than this amount of time. When running from my installed system there is always a brief (jarring) context switch in which the screen temporarily blanks out before coming back up even when the problem doesn't occur. When running from the live- usb (trusty or vivid) the transition between users is pretty seamless: more like a workspace switch. I'm wondering what the difference is between the live-usb and installed environments (drivers, configuration, etc.) and if knowing that could give some insight into fixing the issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1437719 Title: [Dell Inspiron 5547] Black Screen on user switch To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1437719/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1437719] Re: [Dell Inspiron 5547] Black Screen on user switch
I have attempted several times to test with the daily build images you pointed me towards - both the i386 and amd64 versions. I used Startup Disk Creator to create live-usb sticks. When I boot I get an error message stating: gfxboot.32 - not a COM32R image. I did check the SHA256 signature and verified the files downloaded without any (detected) errors. I will attempt a DVD install tomorrow.
I'm going blind - I looked for a BIOS update and didn't find one. However after updating my BIOS the problem still occurs: switching between two user sessions results in a black screen. If anything the problem is worse - much easier to duplicate as it now only takes a few switches to trigger this bug now. As per your request I ran: sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date. The output of these commands is: A06 11/05/2014 Marking this report as Status New.

[Bug 1437719] [NEW] Black Screen on user switch
Public bug reported: When switching users (primarly using Ctrl-Alt-F(7-10) the monitor will sometimes go black. This happens once or twice a day, although on occasion it doesn't occur for several days. It has occurred at least once a week since I installed Ubuntu 14.04.1. It seems to be more of a problem since moving to 14.04.2 - I did perform installation of the Utopic Kernel, X, and MesaGL packages, but this is only perception. At the same time I switched from Unity to Cinnamon (Jeremy Clarkson isn't the only dinosaur roaming the world) - but I have confirmed that just running Unity desktops is vunerable. The display can be restored by sudo service lightdm restart - run from an ssh login from another system. Steps to consistently reproduce the problem is simply to perform abusive user stress testing: switching from one user to another rapidly: as soon as the display switches go back to the other. Usually I can get a black screen with this method in under a minute with Unity desktops. I have the same issue with another system (Dell Vostro 3550) reported in Bug #1437557 - submitting a new defect since this is different hardware and even though the defects look the same there might be differences underneath the hood causing the problem. 14.04.2 Trusty 3.16.0-33-generic. [Bug 1009287] [NEW] Lexmark printing issue with Ubuntu 12.04
Public bug reported: Printing worked before I upgraded to 12.04. The steps I followed and the problem are described below: 1. Upgrated from 11.10 to 12.04 2. Printer would not print. Said the printer was out of ink. 3. Looked for new driver, and the latest from Lexmark was for 11.04. Link - http://support.lexmark.com/index?segment=SUPPORT&userlocale=EN_US&locale=en&productCode=LEXMARK_PLATINUM_PRO902&page=product&frompage=null#1 4. Looked at chaning CUPS to turn off the error and never found anything I thought would work. 5. Reinstalled 11.10 and applied updates. 6. Downloaded and installed the printer drivers from the site shown above. 7. Configured the printer 8. Works now. Just thought I'd share. At this point I'm not sure if it is an issue in CUPS or an issue with the driver. I'll give it another try if Lex updates the print driver, otherwise I'm happy with the 11.10 release. [Bug 876916] Re: gnome-terminal segfault error 4 libgobject-2.0.so
I just encountered this bug myself. I had 4 different terminals open on different workspaces. The workspace I was in had 1 terminal open with 2 tabs, I clicked and dragged the right tab and moved it to the left one, I let go and then clicked on the display to deselect the tab. I entered a command and then did an alt+2 and pressed enter and then all of my terminals disappeared. The following line showed up in my kern.log - gnome-terminal[1963]: segfault at 20 ip b709caca sp bfbf8f30 error 4 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.3000.0[b708b000+4d000] This is the first time gnome-terminal has crashed on me. [Bug 263802] Re: system-config-printer needs admin privleges
Apologies for not responding significantly sooner. I do not know what happened with the request such that I did not see it. The short answer is that the 'model' directory and all subdirectories of that, including samsung and cms did not exist, much less the file CLP- 510cms As noted at the time, the solution I tried that worked was to run system-config-printer with gksudo. While that worked under Interepid, I'm afraid that the workaround does not work under the current release of system-config-printer under Jaunty, or the alpha of Karmic. I have not tried all possible methods of getting this to work, but so far I have tried running the installer with gksudo, as a normal user, and have even tried installing the printer through pointing a web browser at http://localhost:631/ to no avail. I've tried creating the path to the cms files so that the installer can write to them. no luck with that either. Because the behavior appears to be different I suspect that I should be filing a new bug report, but may point back at this one as a similar issue. [Bug 361560] Re: Corrupted tracker index causes persistent applet error popup
Ran into the same problem. Following jonaz__ solution, with the exception that I killed the trackerd and tracker-indexer processes, deleted the contents of ~/.cache/tracker and ~/.local/share/tracker/data then logged out, and logged back in. Tracker indexer posted a notification that it was starting up. Suspect that the tracker from 8.10 and the version of tracker from 9.04 are using some of the same files, but may be using them slightly differently. Alternatively an error under 8.10 may have been silently ignored that is generating the dialog under the 9.04 rc code. Possibly debugging is still enabled? I have not looked at the code though, so I don't know if that is the right area to point at. One 'fix' would be to have the installer discard the contents of those files as history, under the assumption that the new release will generate a new/clean index. I would suggest that a validation on the data happen though as I had different results on another machine. My primary desktop had no problem with the update. [Bug 241072] Re: No audio per Notebook lenovo 3000 n200 ubuntu 8.04
A common problem with many lenovo notebook computers appears to be that there is a switch for lenovo laptops intel audio drivers that has to be manually enabled. [Bug 40058] Re: update-manager shows no changelog for various packages
As of today, still seeing this issue in Hardy. cpp, gcc in the updates today. Particularly frustrating in that these are tools used to compile applications, and while I am sure that the package maintainers rebuilt their keys and authentication after the recent ssl/ssh fiasco, I'm really uncomfortable with compilers showing up without an explanation as to why this one is 'better' than the previous release. Along with the ssl/ssh vulnerability that showed up, getting this bug fixed would very much improve comfort, and trust in the process. The saving grace at the moment is that these are only showing up in 'proposed' packages and not 'critical' from what I've seen. As a result the people most likely to encounter the problem are those who can find out for themselves what the update covers. However there's a roll-up coming down the pike and I think there are going to be people concerned very soon. Granted even then most people will not walk through the changelogs for all of the packages that get updated, but what happens when they see one or two packages that don't present a changelog and decide to wait on them till they do show a changelog, and never see it? [Bug 202329] [NEW] Unable to render multibyte window titles
Public bug reported: The existing libmatchbox1 for use with Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded is not compiled with pango support, which results in rendering garbage (from what I have seen, a list of rectangles) when attempting to use multibyte language strings. You can see this by installing language-installer on a UME image, and then running gnome-language-selector to install and set Chinese (zh_CN) as the default language. After restarting the device and observing that chinese tranlations are working, you will notice that any app that attempts to write a Chinese string in the window title will result in the window title displaying garbage (kind-a like the fonts were not installed.) If you change the debian/rules files to include "--enable-pango" just after the other configurations, and build/install the debian package on a UME image, then the window titles will now render Chinese characters. ** Affects: libmatchbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: ume ** Tags added: ume -- Unable to render multibyte window titles https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/202329 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 144361] Re: Control Centre Remote Control unable to overwrite custom or hardfile .lircrc
I've had this problem in the beta mythbuntu release, not limited to a hardcoded .lircrc file. If either a .lircrc or ~/.mythtv/lircrc file exists the file is not over-written, and the process that is supposed to update the file(s?) hangs with a progress bar that looks like it is at 100% (no numbers in the progress bar.) For many users this will not be a significant issue as they will be configuring their remote when the install the first time, or in adding a remote where they never had one. Not sure if there is a quick way to confirm which version of the generator I am using to confirm if it should have been fixed. From apt- cache policy lirc I get: >apt-cache policy lirc lirc: Installed: 0.8.2-0ubuntu7 Candidate: 0.8.2-0ubuntu7 I am not sure which package mythbuntu-lircrc-generator is in, or if that's the tool that the mythbuntu control center is attempting to use. [Bug 135170] Re: Invalid startup notification message
I just pushed this patch into the ubuntu branch of the hildon-desktop bzr repository. ** Attachment added: "Fix startup notification" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9018121/startup-notification.patch -- Invalid startup notification message https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/135170 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 135170] Invalid startup notification message
Public bug reported: libhildonwm/hd-wm.c is sending an invalid message when attempting to notify the system of a new application starting. This code path is only executed when attempting to start a service (i.e. when attempting to start a hildonized application that has set the 'X-Osso-Service' entry in the application's desktop file. Any software component that is using the libstartup-notification library to listen for these startup messages will trip on a libstartup- notification bug that causes the process to segfault. To see this happen on a ubuntu-mobile build, edit the mousepad desktop entry and add: "X-Osso-Service=org.moblin.mousepad" ... then start the mousepad application, and then attempt to start the app a second time using the drop down menu in the upper lefthand corner of the Marquee. Since matchbox-window-manager is using libstartup- notification, then the window manager crashes and odd behavior starts to happen as the system continues to limp along without a window manager. ** Affects: hildon-desktop (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: gutsy ume ** Tags added: ume ** Tags added: gutsy -- Invalid startup notification message https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/135170 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 120089] dbus should depend on dbus-x11
Public bug reported: The dbus-launch command was formerly in the dbus package, but now is in the dbus-x11 package. Parts of dbus actually attempt to call dbus- launch and fail. The dbus package should depend on dbus-x11, other wise the upgrade path is broken (not to mention dbus services fail to auto-start since the dbus deamon attempts to launch the service via dbus-x11. ** Affects: dbus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- dbus should depend on dbus-x11 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/120089 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
