[Bug 1362962] Re: Calendar icon usually shows the wrong date

2016-05-24 Thread Ryan Prior
This should be closed as "won't fix," marking it as "released" is
misleading.

[Bug 127341] Re: [needs-packaging] UFO:Alien Invasion

Game still needs packaging. Is there a good reason to leave the bug as
invalid? Are we interested in adding Free games to the archive, or
should this maybe be packaged through the App Store process?

Confirmed, still a problem for saucy. Software like font manager
exists in repository and allows you to fix the problem for yourself, but
the out-of-the-box experience of selecting fonts is really junk.

[Bug 1111808] Re: [Unity-design] Unity Legal notice

2013-02-17 Thread Ryan Prior
That seems very sensible, Mark. I hardly think we could have a more
consumer-friendly solution without fundamentally sacrificing the utility we
hope to provide with Unity's scopes. Thank you for making a firm decision,
and doubly for being on our side.

Ryan

P.S. big ups to Jono as well, for your invaluable work in keeping Canonical
in touch with community viewpoints on this issue.

[Bug 204536] Re: sound volume always resets to 100% after reboot

2011-11-28 Thread Ryan Prior
Failing to save and load user data as expected (in this case, data about
volume preference) is absolutely unacceptable. It makes the computer
feel unreliable, gives inexperienced or insecure users the idea that
they are doing something wrong, and ruins the auditory experience that a
user wishes to maintain in their living space or workspace.

Given that this bug still clearly persists in default Ubuntu
installations, can we change the status away from fix released, or
identify a new target project?

[Bug 772168] [NEW] Workspace switcher keyboard shortcuts do nothing when there is no workspace in the indicated direction

2011-04-28 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

If I am presently viewing the top-left workspace and I press
control+alt+up or control+alt+left, nothing happens at all. If I
believed myself to be on another workspace, I might then wonder whether
my computer is responding to me.

In order to re-orient the user and provide a response, the workspace
overview should be shown on the screen even when no movement is made.

[Bug 762359] [NEW] Notifications don't play well with Compiz/Unity workspace switcher

2011-04-15 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

If you are zoomed out into the Compiz/Unity exposé-style workspace
switcher when a notify-osd bubble is triggered, rather than appearing in
the screen corner as usual, it appears in tiny form on each visible
virtual desktop in the grid.

However, moving the mouse to the corner of the screen where the bubble
should appear still causes each of the mini bubbles to fade.

[Bug 759555] [NEW] Right click and drag in Unity quick lists doesn't register

2011-04-13 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Steps to reproduce:
1. Right-click on Firefox icon in the Unity dash; hold right-click
2. Move the mouse to the Open a New Window menu entry
3. Release mouse button

Expected behaviour: new Firefox window opens
Actual behaviour: nothing happens.

The expected behaviour is displayed both by window menus and
libindicator menus (ie the Me Menu), but not by Unity's quick menus.

[Bug 759061] [NEW] Default delay time of 200ms for static application switcher is too long

2011-04-12 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

While using alt-tab to switch windows and holding tab, waiting for the
switcher to appear, 200ms is enough time to wonder whether the keypress
was registered. It contributes to a feeling of lethargy on the part of
the window manager.

In order to provide a worry-free feel to the static application switcher
applet, the delay time should be reduced. I propose 33ms, or about the
space of one frame in a standard 30FPS video.

[Bug 759326] [NEW] Workspace switcher, window spread view, and static application switcher each have different click behaviours

2011-04-12 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Left, right, and middle click trigger different events depending on
whether you're using the workspace switcher, window spread view, or
static application switcher. The UI for these share similarities (window
previews, mouse and keyboard interfaces, zoom effect, typically invoked
via keyboard shortcuts) but the mouse behaviour is different, leading to
a confusing experience.

Workspace switcher
- left click selects (but does not zoom to) clicked workspace (behaviour A)
- left click-and-drag drags clicked window between workspaces (behaviour B)
- right click zooms to clicked workspace (behaviour C)
- middle click does nothing (behaviour D)
- mouse-scroll-up selects (but does not zoom to) next workspace (behaviour
E)
- mouse-scroll-down selects (but does not zoom to) previous workspace,
UNLESS previous workspace is on a different y-level, in which case it does
nothing (behaviour F)

Window spread view
- left click zooms to clicked window (behaviour C)
- left click-and-drag zooms to clicked window (behaviour C)
- right click selects (but does not zoom to) clicked window (behaviour A)
- middle click selects (but does not zoom to) clicked window (behaviour A)
- mouse-scroll-up selects (but does not zoom to) hovered window (behaviour A)
- mouse-scroll-down selects (but does not zoom to) hovered window (behaviour
A)

Static application switcher
- left click zooms to clicked window (behaviour C)
- left click-and-drag zooms to clicked window (behaviour C)
- right click zooms to clicked window (behaviour C)
- middle click zooms to clicked window (behaviour C)
- mouse-scroll-up zooms to hovered window (behaviour C)
- mouse-scroll-down zooms to hovered window (behaviour C)

So, to recap: we have 3 modes for moving around the virtual desktop,
with different click events exhibiting a total of 6 different
behaviours, not one of which is consistent across all three modes. The
behaviour signatures are as follows:

Workspace switcher: ABCDEF
Window spread view: CC
Static application switcher: CC

The responses of these plug-ins to the various click events should be
re-evaluated and unified in order to provide a consistent and easily
learnable user interface.

[Bug 757265] [NEW] Firefox bookmarks broken on long list of bookmarks categories

2011-04-11 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Using Ubuntu 11.04 beta's default installation of Firefox with the menu-
bar integration, my Bookmarks tab is broken.

I have a very long list of bookmark categories which takes more space
than the full vertical length of the screen - that might have something
to do with the bug.

When I click a menu-bar item such as file or view, a menu appears
below it as though it were a tab. The whole word view, for example, is
displayed and the menu is displayed below it. However, with the
Bookmarks entry, the menu is displayed overlapping or obscuring the word
Bookmarks and there is a sizable useless black space which, if I move
my mouse over it and scroll up, increases in size while pushing the
bookmark menu further down the screen.

[Bug 758242] [NEW] Unity super+d shortcut behaves differenly depending on speed of keypresses

2011-04-11 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Steps to reproduce:
* Launch any application
* Press Super+d in quick succession
Expected result: window flies to the background, revealing desktop. Dash is not
triggered.
Actual result: window flies away, desktop revealed, but dash also triggered.

If super is pressed and held for a moment before d is pressed, the dash
is not triggered. This is the expected behaviour.

Super+w also has this problem. You can press Super+w in rapid succession
and get the expected window spread without any dash, but if you press
Super+w again in a similarly rapid succession, the dash comes up as the
window zoom back into place.

Notably, the expose/workspace switcher (Super+s) never triggers the
dash, no matter how rapidly you press the keys.

[Bug 608506] [NEW] Reproducible segfault in rhythmbox while adjusting application volume

2010-07-21 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Steps to reproduce the bug:

1) launch Rhythmbox, use notifier icon to show the interface
2) start any song playing
3) adjust volume using the software slider in the top-left corner - continue
adjusting volume for a number of seconds

Expected result: volume follows the slider's position.
Actual result: playback stops as Rhythmbox segfaults.

It does not matter whether the mouse strays from the confines of the
volume slider, or whether the volume is being adjusted quickly or
slowly. After a matter of seconds of continuous adjustment, the
application quits.

[Bug 154506] Re: Ubuntu LiveCD Install icon confusing

2009-07-07 Thread Ryan Prior
Catto,

The user can also install software (packages), and many users don't
understand the difference between a LiveCD and a hard-drive install (nor
should they have to).

I very much like Mat's suggestion, Install Ubuntu on this computer: it
assumes no level of technical knowledge and leaves no ambiguity as to
what launching that process will do. Absolute newbies may not understand
the word install, but those users are very likely to have help from
somebody with at least a small amount of experience who will recognize
that verb.

[Bug 157215] Re: Synchronizing with a time server does not work when time difference is greater than several hours

2009-07-01 Thread Ryan Prior
To reproduce on Jaunty I ran time-admin, hit unlock, put in my
password, then changed Configuration from Manual to Keep
synchronized with Internet servers

I can't do a screen cast right now (I rendered my Jaunty partition
unbootable during unrelated jiggery pokery) but if it would be very
useful I will try to do one using the LiveCD.

2009-06-29 Thread Ryan Prior
I just reproduced the same bug in Jaunty Jackalope -- using Synchronize

afterwards it still insists that NTP support is not installed and always
reverts to the manual setting.

If the bug is incomplete, please tell me what sort of documentation I
should provide. Would a screencast help?

[Bug 391277] [NEW] Undesirable behaviour in the face of carriage returns

2009-06-23 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: meld

When using Meld to look at a diff between two directories, if one
directory's files have \r\n as a line terminator and the other's have
only \n, the whole files appear to be different whereas for most intents
and purposes they are the same. diff has the --strip-trailing-cr flag
which solves the problem, but Meld does not provide an option to enable
this functionality.

* First, it would be nice to have a strip trailing carriage returns option in
the Options menu
* Meld could auto-detect that the difference between two lines is only a
carriage return and, as a special case, either ignore the cr or warn the user.

[Bug 183896] Re: Inconsistent Rhythmbox browse behaviour

2009-06-11 Thread Ryan Prior
Just as the search filter has a cancel button, the browse filter
should also have one. It would also be easy to make them share a button
as well.

My interface design advice would be this: as the user browses (for
example to the artist Brad Sucks, then to the album Out Of It) the
search box would be changed to read Brad Sucks, then Brad Sucks -
Out Of It. If the Browse interface is closed, that search remains until
the user clears it. The search need not be plain-text: since the
behaviour is slightly different, the text could be a few shades lighter
than the default or something to differentiate it. Upon re-opening the
browse menu, the same artist and album should be showed as when it was
closed.

[Bug 152412] Re: Download speed displayed as 'unknown' in update manager for the first seconds

2009-06-11 Thread Ryan Prior
If I have my system monitor open as I begin a download, it immediately
registers a change in my bandwidth usage when the download begins.
Surely the display could use the same information that the system
monitor can use and display a download speed rating.

I understand that it would be nice to wait for a few seconds before
displaying an ETA, since those tend to fluctuate at first. However, I
don't see the reason not to indicate immediately that the files are
indeed downloading using whatever information is immediately available.

[Bug 154506] Re: Ubuntu LiveCD Install icon confusing

2009-06-11 Thread Ryan Prior
Thanks for your comment, David. I agree that a prominent desktop icon
should be present. However, I think that a few more icons should be
placed on the desktop (that lone solitary icon seems a lot more out of
place than it does if you add links to Examples and and Help.) In
addition, the name Install is very vague, whereas Install Ubuntu to
hard drive would be much clearer.

[Bug 333465] [NEW] Lowest volume setting is still quite loud

2009-02-23 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

The difference between mute and the next step up is huge. Why is there
no way to get really quiet audio?

Steps to reproduce:
* Turn sound applet volume down to mute (the lowest setting).
* Play some music.
* Put your speakers up to a high volume, or plug in head phones.
* Press the (+) button to raise the volume by one step.

Expected result: quiet music.
Actual result: loud music.

This basically makes software volume control useless. When I want to turn
volume down enough to take a phone call or talk to a friend, I need to reach
back and adjust my speaker, which escapes the point.

Proposed solution: either remove the faulty volume control applet, or
fix it so that the lowest volume settings are actually quiet.

[Bug 325606] [NEW] Creative Labs sound card doesn't work after resume from suspend

2009-02-04 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

When I suspend and resume my computer, my sound card no longer
functions. I went through the community documentation on the wiki for
audio troubleshooting and nothing there helped -- the card is
recognized, the modules are there, and upon reboot the card works just
fine.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 x64, and I'll attach the output of lspci below.

[Bug 271135] [NEW] Too many passphrases required to sign folder

2008-09-16 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

When I right-click on a folder in Nautilus and choose to sign it, I am
prompted to select which key to use for signature and then asked to type
that key's passphrase. However, if the folder contains more than one
file, the passphrase will be required for each file. This is confusing
because it makes one wonder whether one typed in the wrong password, and
annoying because of the amount of typing required to sign a folder of
even a small size.

My proposed solution is to allow the user to type the passphrase once
and use that authentication to sign each individual file.

* email Adobe and tell them you want them to work with the Ubuntu community to
ensure an excellent user experience. Mention this bug in particular, and focus
on the desire to work together.
* if there's an Ubuntu Brainstorm idea for this bug, vote it up and promote it
to get this issue more exposure.
* join the Gnash or swfdec teams and help them build a better Free Software
implementation of Flash
* e-mail Canonical and tell them that this bug is of particular importance to

[Bug 226340] [NEW] gedit asks for authentication in order to exit, causes not responding window to appear.

2008-05-03 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Steps to reproduce the problem:
* Use GVFS via Nautilus to browse a server over SSH
* Open a file on that server in gedit
* Give gedit access to the keyring when it asks, choosing to give it access
only once
* Edit and save the file
* Wait awhile (not sure just how long, a few hours always works for me)
* Close gedit

Expected outcome:
* gedit closes

Actual outcome:
* gedit asks for access to the keyring again
* A gedit has stopped responding error box pops up

This shows two bugs:
* gedit should just close without asking for authentication again
* the not responding error message should not pop up when a program asks for
authentication in order to close

[Bug 223436] Re: Ubuntu doesn't pass contentconsumer's girlfriend test

2008-04-28 Thread Ryan Prior
I disagree with the last two commenters.

First, though I agree that the article certainly does not represent a
scientific usability study, I don't think that fact makes the result
useless. The writer learned about some of Ubuntu's weaknesses from his
experience with his girlfriend, and we can learn from that without
having the same things verified n more times. Most of the ideas
discussed aren't highly specific and wouldn't be hugely disruptive to
address in some manner - thus, though the testing is not of the highest
quality, I think the bugs are still valid.

I also disagree that the only fixable bug is the Transmission one. The
fact that many Pidgin users won't know what a screen name or local
alias are is very real, for example. I can confirm that bug absolutely,
having introduced many friends to Pidgin on Windows. The screen
resolution bug is absolutely a fixable problem. In general, I think all
of them are fixable with the possible exception of YouTube, but even
then I bet there's enough ingenuity in the Ubuntu developer community to
find a fix for that.

So, mark this bug invalid if it's truly not useful to the Ubuntu
community - but I think it would be a shame to ignore this request for
improved usability for whatever lame reasons.

[Bug 128320] Re: [gutsy] special keys on laptop don't work on Toshiba Satellite A105

2008-04-27 Thread Ryan Prior
Here's my latest status for my Satellite A105:

Web, Play/Pause, Stop, Forward Reverse all work. The Media Player key
itself doesn't work - it should probably launch Rhythmbox, but it does
not.

Fn+Esc (mute / unmute) does register in the computer and an icon comes
up which shows muting and unmuting, but it doesn't actually affect the
volume at all. Fn+F1 (lock) does not work. Fn+F2, power profiles, does
not work. Fn+F3, hardware suspend, does work (but resume doesn't work).
Fn+F4, software suspend, does not work. Fn+F5, toggle between laptop and
other monitor, does not work. Fn+F6 and Fn+F7, brightness down and up
respectively, do work but the brightness doesn't really go down as far
as I'd like for some situations. Fn+F8, something to do with WiFi, does
not work. Fn+F9, to toggle the touchpad, does not work. (I especially
wish that one worked!) FN+F10, zoom, does not work. Fn+F11, numpad lock,
does work. Fn+F12, sync, does not work. Fn+1 and Fn+2 don't work, but
I'm not sure what they're supposed to do. Fn+Space, to zoom, does not
work.

[Bug 223436] [NEW] Ubuntu doesn't pass contentconsumer's girlfriend test

2008-04-27 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

http://contentconsumer.wordpress.com/2008/04/27/is-ubuntu-useable-
enough-for-my-girlfriend/

We know that there are lots of places where usability could be improved
in Ubuntu and Gnome in general. The article linked above deals
specifically with a case where a non-techie girlfriend is asked to
perform common tasks, unaided, during her first experience using Ubuntu.

This is a meta-bug for all the issues specifically raised in that
article, including:

* Make it possible to install Flash if the first website visited is YouTube.
* Change the name of Transmission's icon to include its function.
* Include a way to search torrent trackers without having to know about them
beforehand. (I suggest beta.legaltorrents.com personally)
* Include a paint-like program and give it a name clearly outlining its
function.
* Include well-known formats in save as menus, rather than export menus.
* Make it easier to identify a partition belonging to another operating system,
ie Windows Partition rather than 492.8GB Media.
* Rename filesystem to make it clear what is there, or include explainer text
of some sort.
* Make sure that the screen resolution can be changed even at very low screen
resolutions.
* Encourage The GIMP to include a UI more familiar to Adobe users.
* Encourage Pidgin to make it easier for people to add their instant messenger
accounts - especially people who don't understand the concept of a
multi-protocol IM, don't know the term Screen Name, Local Alias, etc.
* Generally create help screens that give hints as to how to perform common
tasks, tailored to the commonly used GUI applications included in Ubuntu and to
a novice user. (The developer documentation in Ubuntu is great, I think!)

[Bug 193578] Re: Scrolling Firefox interrupts Rhythmbox audio

2008-04-02 Thread Ryan Prior
I don't know what else to provide, really.

The same thing does not happen when I'm using the Banshee media player
instead of Rhythmbox, or when I'm using Epiphany instead of Firefox.
Does that help any? :-)

I'm willing to run tests or make more videos like the one already posted
if it would help.

[Bug 146160] Re: [needs-packaging] btnx

2008-04-02 Thread Ryan Prior
While it's too late to be included in Hardy universe, you could still
put the Ubuntu packages on GetDeb for easy installation.

[Bug 183884] Re: Document Viewer renders PDF text highlighting incorrectly

2008-03-25 Thread Ryan Prior
I hadn't thought to try copy and paste. However, the section of
BurtonGroupReportFinal.pdf that I attached to this bug copies and pastes
fine into Gedit, the way that would be expected.

I think the copy-and-paste problem is probably a different bug.

Sebastien: because knowledge of workarounds may be helpful to bug
hunters, I question the wisdom of asking users not to add that info to
the bug tracker.

[Bug 183896] Re: Inconsistent Rhythmbox browse behaviour

2008-02-13 Thread Ryan Prior
This bug is not a duplicate of the bug it is currently supposed to
duplicate.

That bug has something to do with restarting Rhythmbox, but this bug
shows up while the program is still running. It seems to be a simple
interface error.
