[Bug 1152861] Re: TP-LINK TL-WN821N v4 Detected but does not work

2013-03-13 Thread Ryan Williams
Tried the upstream kernel you linked to, however it fails to boot with
the messages Fast TSC calibration failed and a few seconds later
/dev/disk/by-uuid/[uuid number]/ does not exist. Booting the 12.04
supplied kernel continues to work as normal.

[Bug 1152861] Re: TP-LINK TL-WN821N v4 Detected but does not work

2013-03-13 Thread Ryan Williams
Re-checked and I left out linux-image-extra, after installing that it
booted fine, but the issue remains the same as before. Green light stays
on, no access points are listed but everything else appears to behave as
if it is detected correctly.

[Bug 1137650] [NEW] libtxc causes texture issues

2013-03-01 Thread Ryan Williams
Public bug reported:

When installed, libtxc seems to cause various texture issues in certain
games. In Xonotic, Skyboxes look corrupted as well as some of the guns
(even affecting their lighting), and in Prey the game will fail to load,
leaving you with a corrupted looking loading screen image. Attached is a
screenshot demonstrating this.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (fully updated)
ibtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 0~git20110809-2.1
AMD HD6450 using radeon open source driver from
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat

This bug also occurs in the default driver.

** Affects: s2tc (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Attachment added: Preys startup screen whilst libtxc is installed

[Bug 864706] [NEW] Mislabelled licenses in For Purchase section

2011-10-02 Thread Ryan Williams
Public bug reported:

For Purchase section in software centre apparently defaults to showing
proprietary for the license. The problem is that both Ryzom and the Full
Circle Magazines are not proprietary. Ryzom is released mostly under
AGPLv3 and CC-BY-SA licenses (http://dev.ryzom.com/projects/ryzom/wiki),
whilst FCM is licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0 Unported, as stated in any
issue of the magazine itself (http://fullcirclemagazine.org/).

This is not just a bug, it's a serious legal issue in misrepresenting
the license. https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Copyfraud

Using Ubuntu 11.04, presumably applies to earlier versions.

[Bug 566449] Re: No Sound Through USB Headset

2010-04-22 Thread Ryan Williams
Yes, I've tried most combinations of profiles and the analog
output/analog speakers setting in the output tab. Profile for headset is
analog stereo output + analog mono input, setting for normal
speakers/sound hardware is stereo analog output.

Other settings listed are digital stereo duplex (IEC958) and the same +
analog input for both the headset and hardware, IEC958 output + digital
stereo input (IEC958) for hardware only. None of these appear to make a
difference.

[Bug 527281] [NEW] Broadcom card stops UI/GDM from loading

2010-02-24 Thread Ryan Williams
Public bug reported:

F5d7051 (BCM4320) USB wireless card stops the UI from loading at
startup, leaving me at a command line login screen. When removing the
card, it spurts out a bunch of error messages before loading GDM
properly. Either that or leaving the system for a large amount of time
and it'll load on its own.

[Bug 493143] Re: windows line 1038 - takes the long rout of opening evolution

2009-12-06 Thread Ryan Williams
Personally, I feel it undermines having the applet in the first place if
it's just recommended to use the applications menu. This is more true
for newer users, who may not notice or realise the panel applet and what
it does. If a user has already customised it, it would seem to me
they're already going to know how to open it anyway.

Menu entries can also be edited and removed via System Preferences
Main Menu, I'm not sure if that logic would mean we should just use
terminal commands, as they can be customised too.

[Bug 382425] [NEW] Notify of reduced permissions

2009-06-01 Thread Ryan Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm-guest-session

When switching to a guest session, there is nothing to tell you that you
have reduced permissions. When trying to open anything that requires
root access (most things in the administrative menu, potentially other
programs in the Applications menu), starting the application simply
fails, with no reason given as to why. This is potentially confusing,
especially if it's a user new to Ubuntu who was lent the laptop so they
could quickly check their e-mail but wanted to change a behaviour not to
their liking, or a kid running havoc on the machine.

I'm thinking the best solution would simply be hide the options that
require root/administrative privileges to run. There is no point having
them there if you can't run them to begin with. Failing that, a dialogue
should appear notifying you of why the thing you just tried to run
didn't work.

[Bug 346524] Re: icedtea6-plugin does not work, java using 100% cpu

2009-03-26 Thread Ryan Williams
This is the output I got when trying to set openjdk as default via the
terminal. Hope this is useful.

I noticed that appletviewer it mentions as not existing appears to
simply be renamed to pluginappletviewer.

[Bug 325276] [NEW] Network Manager documentation out of date

2009-02-04 Thread Ryan Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

The system documentation that refers to Network Manager and setting up
networks is out of date. It refers to several non-existent menu entries
and parts of the GUI that have since changed.

/ubuntu-jaunty/internet/C/basics.xml

I've jumped the gun a bit and have a bazaar branch where I've made some
changes, but it isn't complete:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~theamazingjanet/ubuntu-
doc/jaunty-p-/revision/154

Feel free to edit/change and/or disregard changes at will.

[Bug 140608] Re: linux-image-2.6.20-16 fails to detect twin usb gamepad

2008-12-28 Thread Ryan Williams
I recently purchased a generic Twin USB gamepad. I am running Ubuntu
8.10. At first, the gamepad wasn't recognized at all. I eventually
fixed this using jscalibrator. After I got the gamepad to be
recognized, I rand across the problem that is listed in this bug report.
After searching forums and comments on launchpad, I ran into the
suggestion to add the hid-quirks patch. The only problem was that I
couldn't figure out how to add this patch. To many, this might seem
quite obvious. Maybe this is just the case of a semi-newbie trying to
find perfect step-by-step directions for something that is simple enough
that many more experienced user assume as common knowledge. Anyway, I
am including a step by step reference for people, like me, who aren't
familiar with adding patches to devices and need a little more
explanation. Here is the process that I went through to get the
controllers to be recognized correctly.

1. Go to this web page:
http://georgia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=338457page=1
This page gives a lot of good tips on getting the gamepad to be recognized.
After following most of the tips on the page, my controller was still only
recognized as one gamepad as opposed to two separate twin pads. This is where
the hid-quirks patch comes in.

2. I should mention that before adding patch, I installed 3 HID
libraries (python-hid, libhid0, inputlirc) through Synaptic. This may
or may not have been part of the fix. Regardless, it was still
necessary to add the hid-quirks patch.

3. download the patch. the file name is hid_quirks.c and many pages
have a download for it. It might be best to make sure the the version
of the patch is suitable for your kernel version. I just downloaded a
version that looked like it was from a trusted web page and hoped for
the best.

4. open a terminal and find your kernel version number by typing: uname
-a

5. move the hid_quirks.c file to /usr/src/*YourKernelFolder*/drivers/hid/usbhid
*YourKernelFolder* should be replaced with the folder name that contains
your kernel version.

6. Reboot if necessary.

7. Both controllers should be recognized appropriately after completing
these steps.

I want to mention that this is the first solution that I've posted for
any problems with Ubuntu. Normally, if I have a problem, I search the
forums and Google and try to find the answers or I ask a friend. I have
come across very few things so far that I haven't been able to fix by
these methods. When I came across this problem, none of the answers
that anyone was giving seemed to explain the process well enough.

I would like feedback on this fix. I'm sure it could be more clear or
maybe I missed a step. Let me know how this works for people. Thanks.

Ryan

[Bug 152296] Re: Upgrade to 7.10 hangs at Modifying the software channels/Checking package manager

2007-10-20 Thread Ryan Williams
I fixed my error with it hanging by going to System | Administration |
Software Sources and switching the server to the US server instead of
the 'Main Server'. After it reloaded the sources I ran the Update
Manager and clicked the Upgrade button as recommended. It didn't hang
then.
