[Bug 738330] Re: Today's Natty update means no guest additions in virtualbox

2011-04-03 Thread Sam Illingworth
Can somebody confirm what package we're supposed to install? A search
in software centre for Guest Additions only returns the host package.
Perhaps we should have a separate bug for something like

it's totally not obvious what you're supposed to install to get Guest
Additions working (there isn't even any indication that you shouldn't be
using the standard Guest Additions that comes with VBox on your host)?

What do you guys think?

[Bug 749602] [NEW] Nothing tells you what Guest Additions to install

2011-04-03 Thread Sam Illingworth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose-guest-x11

This bug report is a spin-off of bug 738330.

When you install Ubuntu as the guest OS in Virtual Box, your natural
first instinct is to install Guest Additions from the Virtual Box menu.
According to comments in 738330 you shouldn't be doing this, instead you
should install package virtualbox-ose-guest-x11.

The problem is twofold:

There is nothing that tells you not to install the Guest Additions from within
Virtual Box
The package virtualbox-ose-guest-x11 is hard to find - searching Software
Centre for Guest Additions doesn't find it.

My solution would be to detect n startup if we're running in a Virtual
Box and if so place a link on the desktop with an obvious name like
Install Guest Additions that when clicked would quickly and easily
install them.

I know this may sound like a trivial issue, but to a novice (such as
somebody trying Ubuntu for the first time in vbox) it's a massive turn
off (see bug 738330) which could make people give up on Ubuntu.

Ideally, I suppose we'd detect that they're in a vbox that could run the
guest additions and install them automatically when they install Ubuntu,
but that would probably be quick a lot of work?

[Bug 738330] Re: Today's Natty update means no guest additions in virtualbox

2011-03-20 Thread Sam Illingworth
@Felix - I've found a package called virtualbox-guest-additions in the
software center, but it doesn't sound like that's what you mean:

This package provides an iso image which contains the guest additions
for Linux, Solaris and Windows to be installed on the host system. The
guest systems then can mount the iso and install the guest additions
from there.

so that sounds like you're supposed to install it on the host. I can't
find the package virtualbox-ose-guest-x11 in the software center but it
installs from the command line (is there a reason that's not in the
software center?).

So, after installing that, now I have the guest addition options like
autoresize and seamless, but now my desktop has no launcher or panel,
and if I try to start compiz from the terminal:

[Bug 738330] [NEW] Today's Natty update means no 3D in virtual box

2011-03-19 Thread Sam Illingworth
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu in Virtual Box on a Mac host and today's update has
broken 3D. Normally every time there's an update I restart Ubuntu and
see a 2D interface, but then I re-install the guest additions and
restart and see a 3D interface, but no such look today.

I imagine you already know why this is (some config file listing
supported hardware or something?), but if not I'm happy to grab you any
diagnostic info I can (if you give me instructions).

I can't run those commands, RedSingularity, am on an OS X host, but I'm

resize aren't working either, so the problem is that Guest Additions
don't work in the newest build.

[Bug 734118] [NEW] Panel should (optionally) go opaque when window is maximized

2011-03-12 Thread Sam Illingworth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: light-themes

Some people would like a transparant panel when no window is maximized
and an opaque panel when a window is maximized (I can't decide if I am
one such person). I expect this could easily be added as an option.

On a related note, I personally think it would look better to lose the
narrow opaque rings around the window buttons in the transparant panel
when a window is maximized, especialy since the indicators on the other
side of the panel don't have any outlines.

[Bug 705711] Re: Screenshot should give you the option of hiding the cursor when you take a screenshot

2011-01-21 Thread Sam Illingworth
I think there are too many different dialogs involved. We have:

option 1) you press Print Screen and you get a dialogue with no options other
than saving the screenshot
option 2) you run --interactive which gives you a dialog with options, followed
by the dialog from option 1

The way I see it the dialog in option 1 is pointless. It should just
take the screenshot and save it to your desktop (without the cursor, in
my opinion, I doubt many people want that by default, but the defualt
behaviour should be customizable). Option 2 should have the save
location built in so it doesn't lead on to another dialog.

The user should have the choice which option is run when he presses
print screen.

[Bug 658301] Re: Cannot install GIMP or other apps from Software Centre

I'm not sure what more to add to this - I've tried both the 64 and 32
bit version of 10.10, the normal download from the Ubuntu website, on
two machines, and had the same issue on both. Are you sure you've tried
it on a fresh install? Maybe you've ticked something in some settings
somewhere that says it's OK to use untrusted packages or something?

Steps to reproduce:

Clean install of 10.10
Open Software Centre
Try to install Gimp

If that doesn't work for you, is there any more info you could recommend
me gathering on my systems?

[Bug 510454] Re: Empathy Network error with any account over corporate network

2010-02-07 Thread Sam Illingworth
The attached screen-shot confirms the settings are the same in each app
for the same account (Empathy on the left, Pidgin on the right).
Setting a proxy on my machine makes no difference, but bear in mind that
even if I choose Direct internet connection, my corporate network will
route me through a proxy transparently anyway. I think that's what
Empathy can't handle but Pidgin can.

[Bug 444926] Re: samba and smbfs depend on an old version of samba-common

2009-10-26 Thread Sam Illingworth
Well, I suppose it's good that it's not affecting other people, but I've
never manually edited my sources file, and I've disabled every optional
repo so I'm only looking at the standard Ubuntu ones, so this would
still seem to be an Ubuntu bug. Hmm. Well, I'm planning on doing a
fresh install when Karmic is out, so I imagine this will be resolved in
three days! Well, not resolved, but it won't effect me any more, and
since nobody else has subscribed I don't suppose it matters. I don't
like just giving up though, something must have gone wrong and without
having found out what we've no reason to assume that that bug isn't
still in there somewhere, waiting, watching, slowly and surely drawing
its plans against us...

[Bug 452642] [NEW] The 'x is an executable text file' dialogue is not user friendly

2009-10-15 Thread Sam Illingworth
Public bug reported:

I originally raised this as an idea on the brainstorm, but was told it
should be reported as a bug by the brainstorm admin (the brainstorm is
here: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/21745/).

When you click on an executable text file, such as a script to which
you've just made a change which you want to test, a dialogue appears
asking if you want to open it, run it, run it in a terminal, or cancel.
I think this dialogue is severely flawed.

Why aren't the two run buttons next to each other? Why isn't cancel on
the far left where it usually is? What if I want to edit the file
instead of displaying it (I know the Display button /actually/ opens it
for editing, but it doesn't say that)? Why can't I tell it to stop
asking me every time I click on the file, if I always want to do the
same thing? And why is the dialogue so cluttered?

My solution is as follows:

- Move Cancel to the far left, because that's where we've come to expect it to
be
- Rename the Display button Display/Edit, because that's what it's for
- Get rid of the Run in Terminal option, but put a Run in Terminal tick box
under the Run button, because the dialogue is cluttered
- Add a Remember my Choice tick box

It occurs to me that this is probably trivial to fix - could it be a
paper-cut? I don't know if you could say it effects lots of users, but
it does happen on any executable file. I know that the last thing my
mum wants to see when she clicks an executable file is a scary technical
sounding dialogue - if we could simplify it (by reducing the number of
buttons) and give her a remember my choice option so that she doesn't
get bothered with it every time, she'd be a lot happier.

[Bug 124348] Re: Logging off causes error on client

2009-10-13 Thread Sam Illingworth
This is a high priority bug.

Scenario:
 - User A leaves themselves connected to Remote Machine then goes away from
their local machine
 - User B has a high priority reason to connect to Remote Machine, so User B
connects, disconnecting User A
 - Since User A is not around to click cancel, their TSC automatically
reconnects, kicking off User B in the middle of something critical
 - repeat ad infinitum

In a production environment this is a very big deal.

Also, what's the point in this feature anyway? If you're at your
machine when you get disconnected you can click reconnect manually, and
you can do so straight away so you're never going to use the timed auto-
reconnect anyway, and if you're not at your machine you can't click
cancel (even though if you're not there to click cancel there's no point
connecting, and if you were there to click cancel then it wouldn't need
to be automated). It seems as though this feature is there solely to
create problems.

Sorry for the delay.

Oh, sorry, thought I had included the version I was on. I was using the

(shouldn't really have been using an alpha version on my work machine I
suppose).

I don't know if this still exists in the beta, but I expect it would
have been raised many times if it had, so unless someone fancies testing
it I think we can assume it's resolved.

OK, I've tried that, can still replicate.

Here's a screenshot showing the samba packages sorted by latest version;
you're right - some are 3, some 3.1.

Funny thing is, if I go to Force Version on samba-common it lists the
two options as

2:3.3.2-1ubuntu3.1 (now)
2:3.3.2-1ubuntu3 (Jaunty)

But I'm using Jaunty - why isn't the Jaunty version the one I have? If
I select the Jaunty version it wants to remove smbclient, ubuntu-desktop

[Bug 12153] Re: Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts

2009-08-14 Thread Sam Illingworth
Well, with Super mapped to the win keys I can now (in Jaunty) use the
Windows key in any short-cut, so that appears to be part of this bug
fixed. If other Jaunty users can confirm this is fixed then all that
remains is to change the default setting when Ubuntu is installed.

Would that be a design decision though? If you change it to Super so
you can use it as a modifier you lose the ability to use the Windows key
on its own (anyone know of a workaround for that?). What's the
procedure for proposing a change like this, and does everyone agree this
is now working in Jaunty?

[Bug 12153] Re: Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts

2009-06-22 Thread Sam Illingworth
I've just read through this entire thread - to summarize:

It seems we have two/three issues:

1) The out-of-the-box behaviour only allows the windows key to be used
on it's own, not as part of a shortcut using the keyboard shortcut
applet

2) The workaround of setting super or meta is mapped to the windows key only
makes it work for some commands but not others - someone suggested this is due
to whether the shortcuts are stored in different places:
  Philipp Kohlbecher wrote on 2007-06-04:
The difference seems to be that the shortcut for launching the terminal is
set in gconf setting /apps/metacity/global_keybindings (as is the shortcut for
minimizing all windows to show the desktop, for example), while the shortcut
for locking the screen is set in /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/keybindings (as is
the shortcut for launching the web browser, for example)

3) The workaround apparently breaks the behaviour of Alt Gr:
   alca wrote on 2009-04-27:
yesterday i tried the workaround proposed by smkururu and i answered some
questions written by me (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/12153/comments/106):

key behavior' to 'Meta is mapped to Win keys' the effect is that the AltGr
button does not have a behaviour like before: no key-combination is available
(i cannot use the character '@' with AltGr + ò, for example)

Anyone have anything to add? More details, more complaints, progress
updates? Do we have any developers looking into this?

[Bug 12153] Re: Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts

2008-08-08 Thread Sam Illingworth
Hi Guys - firstly I apologise for not being very technial here - I'm
quite new to Linux.

For me setting Super is mapped to the win keys or Meta is mapped to
the win keys (they appear to do the same thing, and shouldn't one of
them be selected by default anyway? I've installed Ubuntu on four
completely different kinds of machine and have had this problem on all
of them) only partially resolves the issue.

I can now assign Windows+T for launching the terminal, Windows+D for
showing the desktop, but I can't assign Windows+N (or, indeed,
Windows+anything) for opening the home folder (ie starting Nautilus). I
/can/ assign Ctrl+Alt+N to open the Home Folder, just not anything
beginning with the Windows key. Same thing with lock screen -
Ctrl_Alt_L works, Windows+L doesn't.

For clarification - when I say Windows+Key I'm talking about
Mod4+Key (as I said, I turned on Super is mapped to the win keys -
without that I could only use the Windows key (super as it was called
then, not Mod4) on its own).

I don't know how relevant it is, but I've always been able to use the
windows key properly in CompizConfig, and I note that settings such as
the Expo can be changed in Keyboard Shortcuts in gnome or in
CompizConfig.

When Pedro says this has been fixed upstream does that mean the fix is
yet to be released, or has been released? If the fix involves users
changing the Super is mapped to the win keys setting then I really
think the default should be changed on there - a novice would never find
that!

Sorry for the over-use of brackets in the post, I just love brackets.
