[Bug 1918177] [NEW] Console messages shown on power off
Public bug reported: On powering off (shutting down) the computer (Kubuntu 21.04 as on 8 Mar 2021), console messages (probably from the kernel) briefly appear before the Plymouth splash screen does, creating a less-than-desirable user experience. After that the messages disappear and the regular splash screen appears until the computer powers off. I don't know what is causing the problem, but it wasn't there before. I've tried all combinations in /etc/systemd/journald.conf and /etc/sysctl.d/10-console-messages.conf, but to no avail. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: console kernel plymouth -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1918177 Title: Console messages shown on power off To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1918177/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1891767] [NEW] Nautilus not showing video thumbnails
Public bug reported: Using Ubuntu 20.10 (Groovy) Daily Live, GNOME session (gnome-session) on Wayland. Nautilus is no longer showing thumbnails (generated by Totem) for some video files, although the Totem thumbnail generator (totem- video-thumbnailer) is working. Nautilus is showing thumbnails for video files with (Ogg) Theora codec content (even if wrapped in a non-Ogg file format, such as mkv), but not for others, although I have installed all the required/usual libraries (libav*, gstreamer1*). Deleting the thumbnail fail cache (~/.cache/thumbnails/fail/) does not help. Installing ffmpegthumbnailer does not help either. This seems to be a regression, or maybe some libraries for video files in non-free codec formats have not been updated properly. [Bug 1562409] Re: notifications applet has duplicate entries
Notes: * Errata for workaround mentioned in comment #5: Every org.gnome.*.desktop file does not have a corresponding duplicate file. The workaround needs to be used only for the ones that do. * It also seems that the file /usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder- handler.desktop becomes redundant if the workaround is used. This file causes two entries for "Files" to appear in the Open With... list. Two entries for Rhythmbox also appear, but that is because of /usr/share/applications/rhythmbox-device.desktop having Name=Rhythmbox. * With the workaround, Totem (GNOME Videos) gets actions (Play/Pause, etc.) in its context menu. The actions don't work for me in GNOME Shell. They can be removed by commenting out the Actions= line in org.gnome.Totem.desktop or by using the old-style totem.desktop file instead of the newer one. * The workaround works in GNOME Shell. I have not seen what effects it has in Unity (if it is co-installed, for instance), and it may break things there. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1562409 Title: notifications applet has duplicate entries To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/1562409/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1562409] Re: notifications applet has duplicate entries
As I see it, the situation seems to be as follows:- GNOME now uses the "reverse-DNS" format for the file names of several .desktop files, as given in the freedesktop.org specification, e.g., org.gnome.FileRoller.desktop. However, there are older .desktop files installed for these programs as well, and the newer org.gnome.*.desktop files have NoDisplay=true. So the system shows the desktop entries from the older files, but the there being two files for each (both with X -GNOME-UsesNotifications=true) causes duplicate entries to appear in the Notifications panel and the dash. The correct solution would be either to not have the older files at all OR to have X-GNOME-UsesNotifications=false in one set of files (but the latter may not prevent duplicate entries from appearing in the dash). To use the files with the new naming format, the following seems to work (Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 upgraded to GNOME 3.22 using gnome3-staging PPA):- 1. For every org.gnome.*.desktop file, remove or rename the corresponding file of the older naming style. For example, sudo mv file-roller.desktop file-roller.desktop.orig . 2. In every org.gnome.*.desktop file:- a) Comment out the NoDisplay=true line. b) Either comment out the OnlyShowIn line, or change every occurrence of OnlyShowIn=Unity; to OnlyShowIn=Unity;GNOME; . However, the old-style files may get re-created after an update. To prevent this, create an empty file anywhere and, in ~/.local/share/applications/, create symbolic links with the same names, to the empty file. For example, ln -s empty file-roller.desktop . I don't know whether the lines commented out in the org.gnome.*.desktop files will also get undone after updates, although the freedesktop.org specification does say that comments must be preserved across reads and writes.

This problem was there in Ubuntu (GNOME) 16.04, and still remains in 16.10. It seems that the duplicate entries come from multiple .desktop files in /usr/share/applications/. There is also a duplicate entry for Rhythmbox that appears in "Open with..." prompts, etc. (One of the Rhythmbox entries is for selecting an input source, but the name in the .desktop file is the same as the one for the main entry.) All this may be because of providing entries for the Ubuntu Unity desktop. Deleting or renaming one .desktop file for File Roller does remove the duplicate entry for Archive Manager while having no ill-effects, but deleting or renaming one or other of the .desktop files for Nautilus causes the Files entry to disappear from either the dash or the Applications menu. In any case, an update to any of the applications will put the .desktop file and thus the duplicate entry back again, and it will be a matter of constantly correcting /usr/share/applications/ manually or automatically; a less than desirable workaround. Comparing with another standard GNOME desktop, such as in Fedora Workstation, and investigating possible conflicts with entries meant for the Unity desktop may help. One option may be to tweak the "OnlyShowIn" entries in the .desktop files. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1562409 Title: notifications applet has duplicate entries To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/1562409/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1565951] [NEW] Thunar crashes when moving files - thunar assert failure: *** Error in `Thunar': malloc(): smallbin double linked list corrupted: 0x000055c4063a1f80 ***
Public bug reported: Thunar package thunar version 1.6.10-2 in Xubuntu 16.04 (Xenial) Beta 2. Trying to move (cut and paste, not copy) files or directories (there were more than one) to a parent or child directory using Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V led to this crash. This occurs repeatedly but only when there are two or more items being moved, only when moved to or from a parent directory, and only when using the cut and copy commands as described, not when dragging and dropping. This seems like an upstream issue because it also happens on Fedora 23 with Thunar 1.6.10 on xfdesktop 4.12. Probably unrelated but this occurred on btrfs with subvolumes @ and @home while working in @home. Have not tried on other file systems but probably occurs there too and is unrelated to file systems. Total sizes of the directories being moved were about 16 or 17 MiB on disk. [Bug 1565740] [NEW] A stop job for user session delays shutdown on Xenial
Public bug reported: On at least Xubuntu 16.04 a message saying that a stop job is running for a user (the user account which was logged in to) sometimes appears on shutdown (or reboot) and delays the shutdown process (by 90 seconds by default). This problem used to occur on previous versions of some distributions but was fixed, as far as I remember, on Fedora. I am unable to find out details of what is causing this. ** Affects: systemd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1565740 Title: A stop job for user session delays shutdown on Xenial To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1565740/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1565729] [NEW] Suspend/hibernate freezes with radeon driver loaded on hybrid graphics
Public bug reported: On at least Ubuntu 15.10 and 16.04 with the radeon driver (version 7.5.0+git20150819-0ubuntu1 on 15.10, version 7.6.1-1ubuntu2 on 16.04) trying to suspend or hibernate a Lenovo G50-80 with Intel HD Graphics 5500 (Broadwell GT2) and Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Sun XT [Radeon HD 8670A/8670M/8690M / R5 M330] freezes the system when the radeon driver is loaded even if it is not in use. Turning off discrete graphics using the BIOS settings and using only the integrated Intel chip so that the radeon driver is not loaded does not cause this problem. Also, this problem does not occur on Ubuntu 14.04.4 using the kernel and X stack (LTS Enablement Stack) from 15.10 (Wily) even with the radeon driver loaded. There is a message from the radeon driver during boot, "radeon :04:00.0: VCE init error (-22)." which is an upstream issue occurring on other distributions too and is reported at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94811 with further details and logs showing that the radeon driver is unable to find a suitable screen. However, even if the radeon driver is loaded, suspend/hibernate does not freeze on, e.g., Fedora 23 and, as mentioned above, even Ubuntu 14.04.4. I have tried using S1 instead of S3 sleep to no avail. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: hibernate suspend wily xenial -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1565729 Title: Suspend/hibernate freezes with radeon driver loaded on hybrid graphics To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/1565729/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1440275] Re: Ubuntu GNOME only allows regional format setting for US, UK, Canada, Australia, and NZ
My problem, as linked to from comment #12, is that the Region & Language panel does not list India (English). Even if it lists a non-English format such as Korean as mentioned in comment #10, it still does not list any English formats other than the few noted in the OP. Installing language packs for Hindi and Bengali, for instance, lists the respective formats for India, but some English formats, for example, India, Nigeria, Zambia, etc., do not have specific language pack packages, and are not listed. On other distributions, the Region & Language panel uses the languages and formats selected by the user or installed on the system. For example, on Arch and its derivatives, the formats generated by locale-gen from /etc/locale.gen and listed by locale -a are all listed in the Region & Language panel. On Ubuntu (GNOME), although locale-gen generates all English locales and locale -a lists them, they are not listed in the Region & Language panel. [Bug 1040394] [NEW] Evolution global menus keep changing
Public bug reported: In Ubuntu 12.04, while using Evolution, the global drop-down menus keep changing. Opening different modules, such as Contacts or Calendar, or even going back to a previous module, such as Mail -> Contacts -> Mail, causes the order of the drop-down menus in the global menu bar to keep changing. For example, File, Edit, ... changes to Edit, File, Ubuntu release: 12.04 LTS (precise) amd64 Kernel: 3.2.0-30-generic #47+kamal6~DellXPS-Ubuntu SMP Evolution version: 3.2.3-0ubuntu6 Expected behaviour: The order of the drop-down menus remains consistent across modules. Actual behaviour: Changing modules changes the order of the drop-down menus in the global menu bar. How to reproduce: - 1. Open Evolution and ensure that the window is maximised. 2. Check the order of the drop-down menus by pointing to the global menu bar. 3. Change to a different module, such as Contacts or Calendar. 4. [Bug 872044] Re: Bluetooth 'Send files' returns permission denied error
@CaptainMark (comment #93): I know that this is a bug report and all bug reports do have only bug-related comments. We are not going to flood this thread with opinionated comments. However, comment #90 is still valid. This type of discussion also occurs elsewhere on forums but that has never helped either, regarding bug fixing on Ubuntu. That said, I have a query here too. Are you pushing this fix upstream as well or has it already been fixed upstream? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/872044 Title: Bluetooth 'Send files' returns permission denied error To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-bluetooth/+bug/872044/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 872044] Re: Bluetooth 'Send files' returns permission denied error
@florin (comment #90): I am a free and open source software proponent and I fully sympathise with your sentiments. Indeed, I have myself felt this often. The problem is that, of late, both the GNOME project and Canonical have been increasingly focussing on adapting their user interfaces for mobile and touch-oriented devices, which require different approaches than traditional desktops and laptops. As a result, many other bugs in the existing software are either getting neglected or are even being created as regressions, when in previous versions they did not exist. For example, Ubuntu 10.04 is infinitely more stable than Ubuntu 11.10. More importantly, 10.04 does not have all the features of 11.10, but what it does have works absolutely correctly and as expected, which is what matters. Similarly, the Debian distribution also provides a stable and reliable system which is not updated with every fad and fancy. The same goes for the KDE SC project. The only way to have a stable OS today (open source) that I can think of is either using Ubuntu's LTS release, which is Ubuntu 10.04 at present and will be 12.04 in April, although the number of new features in 12.04 is again huge, or using something other than Ubuntu which does not rush with updates, such as Debian or OpenSUSE. I have personally also found Fedora to be much better than Ubuntu at fixing bugs, although it provides updates even more frequently. But most of the time, when there is some annoying bug in Fedora, they fix it much more quickly than Ubuntu. The Unity interface in 11.10, for example, had bugs related to both the window management system for maximised LibreOffice windows as well as the launcher quick-lists, which were fixed just a few days ago when the next version of Ubuntu is almost due. By contrast, Fedora fixed most of its problems in version 16 very rapidly after they were reported. I only hope that Canonical in particular will take stock of the situation and put its quality control back in place for which it was known so well for so long.
