Sorry. As I said, I'm unable to find out which package is causing the
problem. Perhaps someone can help?

[Bug 1918177] [NEW] Console messages shown on power off

2021-03-08 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Public bug reported:

On powering off (shutting down) the computer (Kubuntu 21.04 as on 8 Mar
2021), console messages (probably from the kernel) briefly appear before
the Plymouth splash screen does, creating a less-than-desirable user
experience. After that the messages disappear and the regular splash
screen appears until the computer powers off.

I don't know what is causing the problem, but it wasn't there before.
I've tried all combinations in /etc/systemd/journald.conf and
/etc/sysctl.d/10-console-messages.conf, but to no avail.

Sorry, can't relate times exactly. It was after I installed all the
libav and gstreamer libraries, and it happens every time. Personally, I
don't see a connection with the logs, but it seems to me that the issue
has started after Nautilus was upgraded to 3.37.90. The older ones
(e.g., 3.37.3 or 3.37.1) didn't have the issue.

[Bug 1891767] [NEW] Nautilus not showing video thumbnails

2020-08-15 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 20.10 (Groovy) Daily Live, GNOME session (gnome-session) on
Wayland. Nautilus is no longer showing thumbnails (generated by Totem)
for some video files, although the Totem thumbnail generator (totem-
video-thumbnailer) is working. Nautilus is showing thumbnails for video
files with (Ogg) Theora codec content (even if wrapped in a non-Ogg file
format, such as mkv), but not for others, although I have installed all
the required/usual libraries (libav*, gstreamer1*). Deleting the
thumbnail fail cache (~/.cache/thumbnails/fail/) does not help.
Installing ffmpegthumbnailer does not help either. This seems to be a
regression, or maybe some libraries for video files in non-free codec
formats have not been updated properly. Package versions are as
follows:-

[Bug 1875591] [NEW] GNOME does not lock screen on closing lid

2020-04-28 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa) (amd64 on x86_64), GNOME 3.36.1 (as reported
by Settings -> About), X11, gnome-power-manager 3.32.0-2, gnome-
settings-daemon 3.36.0-1ubuntu2.

On my laptop, I want to lock the screen when I close the lid. I have set
HandleLidSwitch=lock and HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=lock in
/etc/systemd/logind.conf. I have also set both org.gnome.settings-
daemon.plugins.power lid-close-ac-action and org.gnome.settings-
daemon.plugins.power lid-close-battery-action to 'blank'. However, when
I log in after a boot-up and close the lid WITHOUT performing any action
such as opening a shell menu or starting an application, the system does
not lock the screen and I directly get back to the desktop after re-
opening the lid. This continues until I perform any such action as
mentioned above; after that the screen is locked on closing the lid
every time as expected (until next boot).

2018-04-20 Thread Saurav Kumar
I faced issues when upgrading Ubuntu 16.04 (I don't remember exactly,
maybe from 16.04.3 to 16.04.4). At end of the upgrade it showed
following error:

Added plasma-nm as affected package. I think it may be more of an issue
with KDE/Plasma than NetworkManager itself, since it only affects
Kubuntu and not other *buntu editions which also use NetworkManager.

[Bug 1715156] [NEW] Kubuntu 17.10 requires Wi-Fi password twice

2017-09-05 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Public bug reported:

Connecting to a Wi-Fi network on Kubuntu 17.10 (Beta 1, with Plasma
5.10.5) requires the password twice, on both the live session and the
installed system. This is similar to, but may not be identical to,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1572244.
The password entered in the Plasma Network Manager widget does not
appear in the password field of the selected network in System Settings,
unless it is entered again at the second prompt or in the connection
editor.

[Bug 1703151] [NEW] Dolphin shows "Delete File" for folders

2017-07-08 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 17.10 (Alpha 1) with KDE Applications upgraded to 17.04.2 from
PPA (staging-kdeapplications).

1. Enable the 'Delete' service for Dolphin.
2. Right-click a folder (or a selection of folders).
3. The context menu shows "Delete File" (see attached screenshot). Folders are
usually not called files, so this could show just "Delete", which would cover
all cases.

[Bug 1562409] Re: notifications applet has duplicate entries

2017-02-22 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Notes:

* Errata for workaround mentioned in comment #5: Every
org.gnome.*.desktop file does not have a corresponding duplicate file.
The workaround needs to be used only for the ones that do.

* It also seems that the file /usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder-
handler.desktop becomes redundant if the workaround is used. This file
causes two entries for "Files" to appear in the Open With... list. Two
entries for Rhythmbox also appear, but that is because of
/usr/share/applications/rhythmbox-device.desktop having Name=Rhythmbox.

* With the workaround, Totem (GNOME Videos) gets actions (Play/Pause,
etc.) in its context menu. The actions don't work for me in GNOME Shell.
They can be removed by commenting out the Actions= line in
org.gnome.Totem.desktop or by using the old-style totem.desktop file
instead of the newer one.

* The workaround works in GNOME Shell. I have not seen what effects it
has in Unity (if it is co-installed, for instance), and it may break
things there.

[Bug 1562409] Re: notifications applet has duplicate entries

2017-02-22 Thread Saurav Sengupta
As I see it, the situation seems to be as follows:-

GNOME now uses the "reverse-DNS" format for the file names of several
.desktop files, as given in the freedesktop.org specification, e.g.,
org.gnome.FileRoller.desktop. However, there are older .desktop files
installed for these programs as well, and the newer org.gnome.*.desktop
files have NoDisplay=true. So the system shows the desktop entries from
the older files, but the there being two files for each (both with X
-GNOME-UsesNotifications=true) causes duplicate entries to appear in the
Notifications panel and the dash.

The correct solution would be either to not have the older files at all
OR to have X-GNOME-UsesNotifications=false in one set of files (but the
latter may not prevent duplicate entries from appearing in the dash).

To use the files with the new naming format, the following seems to work
(Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 upgraded to GNOME 3.22 using gnome3-staging PPA):-
 1. For every org.gnome.*.desktop file, remove or rename the corresponding file
of the older naming style. For example, sudo mv file-roller.desktop
file-roller.desktop.orig .
 2. In every org.gnome.*.desktop file:-
  a) Comment out the NoDisplay=true line.
  b) Either comment out the OnlyShowIn line, or change every occurrence of
OnlyShowIn=Unity; to OnlyShowIn=Unity;GNOME; .

However, the old-style files may get re-created after an update. To
prevent this, create an empty file anywhere and, in
~/.local/share/applications/, create symbolic links with the same names,
to the empty file. For example, ln -s empty file-roller.desktop . I
don't know whether the lines commented out in the org.gnome.*.desktop
files will also get undone after updates, although the freedesktop.org
specification does say that comments must be preserved across reads and
writes.

[Bug 1562409] Re: notifications applet has duplicate entries

2017-01-13 Thread Saurav Sengupta
This problem was there in Ubuntu (GNOME) 16.04, and still remains in
16.10. It seems that the duplicate entries come from multiple .desktop
files in /usr/share/applications/. There is also a duplicate entry for
Rhythmbox that appears in "Open with..." prompts, etc. (One of the
Rhythmbox entries is for selecting an input source, but the name in the
.desktop file is the same as the one for the main entry.) All this may
be because of providing entries for the Ubuntu Unity desktop.

Deleting or renaming one .desktop file for File Roller does remove the
duplicate entry for Archive Manager while having no ill-effects, but
deleting or renaming one or other of the .desktop files for Nautilus
causes the Files entry to disappear from either the dash or the
Applications menu. In any case, an update to any of the applications
will put the .desktop file and thus the duplicate entry back again, and
it will be a matter of constantly correcting /usr/share/applications/
manually or automatically; a less than desirable workaround. Comparing
with another standard GNOME desktop, such as in Fedora Workstation, and
investigating possible conflicts with entries meant for the Unity
desktop may help. One option may be to tweak the "OnlyShowIn" entries in
the .desktop files.

[Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

2016-05-12 Thread Saurav
@unrud: Your hunch was right. Increasing the delay (even to 2 seconds is
enough) resolves the issue. Even on your fresh installation, do check if
it works correctly with suspend/hibernate as well when the delay is not
more than one second.

I have gone back to gnome-screensaver for the time being, however,
because my Wi-Fi keeps going off after resuming from more than one
consecutive (with no intervening normal reboot) suspend/hibernate states
with light-locker (I don't know why).

[Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

2016-05-11 Thread Saurav
@unrud: Your script causes the screen to get re-locked on the first
attempt at unlocking, but it unlocks and the mouse pointer shows up on
the second attempt.

[Bug 1297144] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad X230] Invisible cursor after resume from suspend

2016-04-19 Thread Saurav
This problem still occurs on at least Xubuntu 16.04 (haven't checked the
other variants, but if it's a problem with light-locker, it would
presumably affect the default set-up of Xubuntu and Ubuntu). I have
found three other old bug reports, bug #554438, bug #552214, and bug
#492782, which seem to refer to the same problem, and of course, there
may be still more bug reports about this. Of the three I have listed,
the last one shows Fix Released for xserver-xorg-video-intel, and,
although I have a hybrid graphics system with Intel + AMD, even
switching off the AMD GPU in the BIOS settings so that the software
never sees the GPU and its driver is not loaded, still causes the mouse
pointer to disappear after unlocking the screen through light-locker.

Can someone please provide information on which bug report to use to
track this issue?

[Bug 1565729] Re: Suspend/hibernate freezes with radeon driver loaded on hybrid graphics

2016-04-14 Thread Saurav
I'm not sure if this is a duplicate. My problem occurs only if the
radeon driver is loaded (although the AMD GPU need not be in use). Both
suspend and hibernate work fine for me if the radeon driver is not
loaded, e.g., by disabling the AMD GPU in the BIOS settings. I did not
find much information on display hardware in the other bug report.

[Bug 1565951] [NEW] Thunar crashes when moving files - thunar assert failure: *** Error in `Thunar': malloc(): smallbin double linked list corrupted: 0x000055c4063a1f80 ***

2016-04-04 Thread Saurav
Public bug reported:

Thunar package thunar version 1.6.10-2 in Xubuntu 16.04 (Xenial) Beta 2.

Trying to move (cut and paste, not copy) files or directories (there
were more than one) to a parent or child directory using Ctrl+X and
Ctrl+V led to this crash. This occurs repeatedly but only when there are
two or more items being moved, only when moved to or from a parent
directory, and only when using the cut and copy commands as described,
not when dragging and dropping.

This seems like an upstream issue because it also happens on Fedora 23
with Thunar 1.6.10 on xfdesktop 4.12.

Probably unrelated but this occurred on btrfs with subvolumes @ and
@home while working in @home. Have not tried on other file systems but
probably occurs there too and is unrelated to file systems. Total sizes
of the directories being moved were about 16 or 17 MiB on disk.

[Bug 1565740] [NEW] A stop job for user session delays shutdown on Xenial

2016-04-04 Thread Saurav
Public bug reported:

On at least Xubuntu 16.04 a message saying that a stop job is running
for a user (the user account which was logged in to) sometimes appears
on shutdown (or reboot) and delays the shutdown process (by 90 seconds
by default). This problem used to occur on previous versions of some
distributions but was fixed, as far as I remember, on Fedora. I am
unable to find out details of what is causing this.

[Bug 1440275] Re: Ubuntu GNOME only allows regional format setting for US, UK, Canada, Australia, and NZ

2015-05-08 Thread Saurav Sengupta
My problem, as linked to from comment #12, is that the Region & Language
panel does not list India (English). Even if it lists a non-English
format such as Korean as mentioned in comment #10, it still does not
list any English formats other than the few noted in the OP. Installing
language packs for Hindi and Bengali, for instance, lists the respective
formats for India, but some English formats, for example, India,
Nigeria, Zambia, etc., do not have specific language pack packages, and
are not listed. On other distributions, the Region & Language panel uses
the languages and formats selected by the user or installed on the
system. For example, on Arch and its derivatives, the formats generated
by locale-gen from /etc/locale.gen and listed by locale -a are all
listed in the Region & Language panel. On Ubuntu (GNOME), although
locale-gen generates all English locales and locale -a lists them, they
are not listed in the Region & Language panel.

[Bug 1338973] Re: scrolling unusable, touchpad too sensitive

2014-07-15 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Same issue with ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad on Lenovo G500.
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=331706 says that this is fixed
upstream, hope Kubuntu devs push an update soon.

@Tilo Werner: The workaround in comment #3 works, though 100 is too slow
for me (and killed coasting), I had to experiment a bit with
ScrollDelta, CoastingSpeed and CoastingFriction to find a suitable
configuration. Thanks for the tip!

@aljosa: Comment #4, couldn't find any new kde-touchpad package. Nor in
trusty-backports or utopic.

[Bug 1114887] [NEW] Random hangs with GDM3

2013-02-03 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Public bug reported:

I am using GNOME Shell and experience random hangs while using GDM (v3)
as the display manager on Ubuntu. The technical specifications are given
below:-

Ubuntu version: 12.10 amd64
linux version: 3.5.0-23.35 generic
gdm version: 3.6.1-0ubuntu1
gnome-shell version: 3.6.2-0ubuntu0.2
gnome-session version: 3.6.0-0ubuntu1.1
System: Toshiba Satellite laptop C850-P5010
Graphics: Intel Sandybridge Mobile (Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core
Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09), also called Intel
Integrated HD Graphics)

I have installed all and only officially released updates for GDM,
GNOME, X and the Linux kernel. The GDM Greeter log shows a "failed to
create drawable" message. The hang either occurs randomly while starting
the system or equally randomly if I log out and log in graphically
several times in a row. I cannot duplicate the hang reliably. The system
stops responding to all input and I need to force the power off to get
out of the situation. I have also experienced the same problem on the
Acer Aspire 5755. I have not installed/used the GDM3 Setup tool or
changed any GDM parameters from the defaults.

[Bug 1040394] [NEW] Evolution global menus keep changing

2012-08-22 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 12.04, while using Evolution, the global drop-down menus keep
changing. Opening different modules, such as Contacts or Calendar, or
even going back to a previous module, such as Mail -> Contacts -> Mail,
causes the order of the drop-down menus in the global menu bar to keep
changing. For example, File, Edit, ... changes to Edit, File,

Ubuntu release: 12.04 LTS (precise) amd64
Kernel: 3.2.0-30-generic #47+kamal6~DellXPS-Ubuntu SMP
Evolution version: 3.2.3-0ubuntu6
Expected behaviour: The order of the drop-down menus remains consistent across
modules.
Actual behaviour: Changing modules changes the order of the drop-down menus in
the global menu bar.
How to reproduce: -
1. Open Evolution and ensure that the window is maximised.
2. Check the order of the drop-down menus by pointing to the global menu bar.
3. Change to a different module, such as Contacts or Calendar.
4. Repeat step 2 to verify that the order of the menus is not as it should be.

Launcher auto-hide is enabled.

[Bug 872044] Re: Bluetooth 'Send files' returns permission denied error

2012-03-31 Thread Saurav
@CaptainMark (comment #93): I know that this is a bug report and all bug
reports do have only bug-related comments. We are not going to flood
this thread with opinionated comments. However, comment #90 is still
valid. This type of discussion also occurs elsewhere on forums but that
has never helped either, regarding bug fixing on Ubuntu.

That said, I have a query here too. Are you pushing this fix upstream as
well or has it already been fixed upstream?

[Bug 872044] Re: Bluetooth 'Send files' returns permission denied error

2012-03-31 Thread Saurav
@florin (comment #90): I am a free and open source software proponent
and I fully sympathise with your sentiments. Indeed, I have myself felt
this often. The problem is that, of late, both the GNOME project and
Canonical have been increasingly focussing on adapting their user
interfaces for mobile and touch-oriented devices, which require
different approaches than traditional desktops and laptops. As a result,
many other bugs in the existing software are either getting neglected or
are even being created as regressions, when in previous versions they
did not exist. For example, Ubuntu 10.04 is infinitely more stable than
Ubuntu 11.10. More importantly, 10.04 does not have all the features of
11.10, but what it does have works absolutely correctly and as expected,
which is what matters. Similarly, the Debian distribution also provides
a stable and reliable system which is not updated with every fad and
fancy. The same goes for the KDE SC project. The only way to have a
stable OS today (open source) that I can think of is either using
Ubuntu's LTS release, which is Ubuntu 10.04 at present and will be 12.04
in April, although the number of new features in 12.04 is again huge, or
using something other than Ubuntu which does not rush with updates, such
as Debian or OpenSUSE. I have personally also found Fedora to be much
better than Ubuntu at fixing bugs, although it provides updates even
more frequently. But most of the time, when there is some annoying bug
in Fedora, they fix it much more quickly than Ubuntu. The Unity
interface in 11.10, for example, had bugs related to both the window
management system for maximised LibreOffice windows as well as the
launcher quick-lists, which were fixed just a few days ago when the next
version of Ubuntu is almost due. By contrast, Fedora fixed most of its
problems in version 16 very rapidly after they were reported. I only
hope that Canonical in particular will take stock of the situation and
put its quality control back in place for which it was known so well for
so long.

2012-02-03 Thread Saurav
The update in https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/842566 as mentioned
by eden6000 in comment #27 resolves this bug. Its corrections ought to
be integrated into Oneiric's bamfdaemon so that this bug can be fixed in
an ordinary update.

[Bug 750186] Re: Window has no close/minimize/unmaximize buttons when it opens maximized

2011-11-13 Thread Saurav
This problem occurs when the font to be used at startup is different
from the font that is default in LibreOffice. A different font can occur
due to a default template or due to opening a document containing such a
font. If the font used by default in LibreOffice is not modified (except
in Writer through Tools, Options, LibreOffice Writer, Basic Fonts, which
can be changed), the problem does not occur when starting a LibreOffice
application afresh without any document.

This may not always be only during first login but afterwards too.

@om26er: "seems fixed to me as well, did the fix for "launcher not
revealing" issue also fixed this as well". What is the "launcher not
revealing" issue and how do you fix it? I had been experiencing an issue
with the launcher sometimes not revealing when the mouse pointer was
held against the left edge of the screen but after the latest updates I
have not yet experienced it.

[Bug 750186] Re: Window has no close/minimize/unmaximize buttons when it opens maximized

2011-10-24 Thread Saurav
Also occurring with other LibreOffice programs on my Oneiric, including
Writer, but currently it seems to be occurring only when opening a
document by double-clicking in Nautilus. Starting the LibreOffice
programs afresh without any document is working correctly and opening a
document from the application's menu or toolbar is also working
correctly. However, I have not installed lo-menubar. I had installed it
earlier and when it was installed, even starting LO programs directly
was causing the issue.
