2010-03-03 Thread Saverio J Marasco (Sam)
Thank-you
Since there were 10 or so updates to OO at the time my machine tried to update,
I ended up keeping system monitor open and killing soffice.bin every time the
next patch was presented. It seemed that open office respawned the dang thing
each time. A pain, but it worked

When this occurred on my machine, I closed OOo Base, which was open. And
that fixed the problem for me.

Re: [Bug 450569] Re: package openoffice.org-emailmerge 1:3.0.1-9ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade:

2010-03-03 Thread Saverio J Marasco (Sam)
Do you have system monitor installed ?
check your applications bar under system --(second one down, not preferences)
--
the file should be there near the package manager

sorry I am sketchy about the names... I am in (choke - wheeze, gasp)
Windows Vista -64 sp1, and I just could not get the actual names outta
my poor befuddled brain ;-)

Once that is running, watch for 2 (Open Office) files that seem to run
in the background at all times when Ubuntu is running one is named
soffice.bin, and the other name slips my memory :( .

then restart the upgrade. Every time the upgrade screeches to a halt,
look at system manager, right click each of the 2 files and choose kill.
when that is done close the warning boxes and continue the upgrade.

Since these files reappear after each part of the upgrade is done, you
will have to repeat this action ad-nauseum, until all OO upgrades are
through

Hope this helped

Oddly enough just quitting that did not solve my problem. In a separate

happened at every turn. tedious, but I got it through. Thank you all for

A thousand thank you's!!

I had to leave a terminal window open and run the killall command below
each time the error window appeared during the upgrade because it
appeared to spawn a new process each time a step in the upgrade occurred
but the upgrade eventually completed successfully. I had to run the
command about 10 times because it was affecting 5 packages - pdfimport,
emailmerge, report-builder, filter-binfilter and presenter-console and
they are now all installed and running.  Thanks again.

Cheers,

Rob

Install and use System Monitor. You will find it in System
--Administration of the Menu Bar. This program will show a real time
view of processes running. It helps here if you have 2 monitors working.
Every time you hit a roadblock in the installation you will notice 2
processes related to OpenOffice have re-spawned. Kill them (I believe
you right-click and choose kill) and then tell installation to continue.
Unfortunately this tedium lasts for at least 5 cycles or more. It seems
that every patch or program restarts OpenOffice , tries to install and
then says Oops - Open Office is running, Hold It ! Wait-a-Minit!

sheesh

It does the job.

AS I WROTE BEFIRE:

Kill any process created by installer when performing this update /
upgrade through synaptics or software center or update manager ...

Every time you got error about opened OOo process, there is process
named as your update package in PROCESS tab in SYSTEM MONITOR! This is
the reason why xkill may fail and update cannot continue properly.

I loved your mention of the old tty messages. In 1972 or 1973 I was
introduced to the world of computers while in pharmacy school at U Pitt.
At first we had a teletype, that saved programs on ticker tape (lol)
then we got hot and had the green datapoint monitors. Hot stuff.  Ahhh
the old days, good to remember but glad I am not there!  ;)

I disagree. the fact that you can explain exactly how properly
behaving programs end up doing something unexpected when combined, does
not mean that it isn't a bug.

In this case, it crashes is definitively unwanted behavior,

Oh well... every time kernel will be updated new initrd.img will be created
by system so it's inevitable.
You may check /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf for tighter initrd.img
creation.

POSSIBLE WORKAROUND:
add ubiquity --no-migration-assistant to the F6 options

[Bug 258603] Re: ubiquity crashed with InstallStepError in configure_user()

2009-10-01 Thread Saverio J Marasco (Sam)
I have tried to re-install several times. Even re-formatting / partition.
not only does ubiquity crash, it screws up GRUB somehow
Grub says it cannot find the map file and one other similarly named file
(suffer from crs)
Using Live CD I searched the disc and could not find either file.
I hate to say this but this is reminding me too much of windows,
Do not get me wrong, I am sold on Ubuntu and would rather lose my left nut than
have to go back to windows on a regular basis :)
I certainly hope you folk find the cure well back to the salt mines and try
to get 8.10 to re-istall

I reinstall, go to HULU and firefox says I need the plug in (or was it Hulu)
Anyway I click yes and the .deb file downloads and the ,deb installer takes

an all black screen similar to windows command prompt (called terminal) shows
all kinds of error messages

[Bug 373972] [NEW] upgrade to 9.04 from within 8.10 borked

2009-05-08 Thread Saverio J Marasco (Sam)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: upgrade-system

I was working in Ubuntu 8.10. I always download updates asap. Then I saw the
message a new release 9.04 available, do you want To upgrade ?
(paraphrased). I answered affirmative and went through the upgrade process.
When a dialog box appeared wanting to restart system I did so. My boot menu now
said 9.04 rather n 8.10 (ie Grub was working).
However when I clicked on the first choice (standard) the screen flashed 3
times (2 was normal for earlier versions).
Usually on the third tryy I would ger familiar brown login screen.

In this case 9.04 booted with the boot splash screen and animated bar
underneath but it came up with a dark 3/8 (ewag) strip at the screen
top with pink dots and lines scattered thru it. It flashed the third
time and then the stripe was repeated along with an overlapping row of
circular Ubuntu logos and the word Ubuntu repeatedly across the screen.
Under that were non uniform green dashes. The Ubunto words and logos
were fuzzy to the point of being almost illegible. The 3 finger salute
did nothing. But tapping the power key once eventually got the Ubunto
shutdown splash with animated bar..

I tried rebooting and used the repair mode to attempt to fix packages
and the X-server. I am just learnng the command line stuff. It is a bit
different that Sco Openserver, but blessedly not as archaic.

essentially nothing worked, so HELP (:-) There does not seem to be a way to
repair a botched install from an install CD. I did try the alt-F2 and other
suggestions (alt install cd) but everything wants to rewrite the whole
partition and blow away my data. Sigh.
