This looks like the same issue as Bug #246548.

[Bug 338148] Re: Needs new version from Debian: fails to build with removal of mesa-swx11-source

2009-11-29 Thread Scott Scriven
I tried vnc4 4.1.1+X4.3.0-32 from debian, and it builds and works on
karmic. A package sync should be sufficient to fix this bug.

[Bug 153521] Re: fonts are blurred with subpixel rendering

2009-04-02 Thread Scott Scriven
Thanks for the link to Johan's fix. The default font blur drives me
crazy... makes me feel like my monitor is miscalibrated or I have dirt
in my eyes.

Maybe the bug is considered a feature for black text on a white
background, but it causes problems when other colors are used. For
example, I've attached a picture of white text on a blue background.
The top line is the default in ubuntu 8.10, and the bottom line is with
Johan's fix applied. By default, the letters aren't even a consistent
color.

Could the new behavior be disabled except for specific cases? It seems
like it should work for black/white or white/black text with font sizes
larger than 12pt, but it seems to make everything else harder to read.

[Bug 153521] Re: fonts are blurred with subpixel rendering

2009-04-02 Thread Scott Scriven
To help explain how this actually looks (without xzoom), here is a
close-up of the same image from a camera. The top line is the default
ubuntu blurry font behavior, and the bottom line uses Johan's fix.

Note the shapes of letters dy/+ near the right side. In the top
image, the d and + actually have two vertical lines each and the
diagonals in y and / look more like disconnected vertical columns
than like diagonal lines.

[Bug 352661] [NEW] enh: add hotkey for toggle fullscreen

2009-03-31 Thread Scott Scriven
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xvnc4viewer

It would be nice to have a hotkey in xvnc4viewer to toggle fullscreen
mode.

I have needed VNC a lot lately for work, and often need to toggle
between fullscreen mode and the regular windowed mode. I often only
need fullscreen mode for a few seconds, so I could end up spending half
that time just moving the mouse to the correct F8 menu item while
turning it on and off.

For my own use, I've hardcoded a hotkey into the program to speed up
this process, instead of having to hit F8 and mouse around to the option
on the menu. This is by no means a good patch for general use (since
it's not documented or configurable), but it shows at least the minimum
necessary to make Hyper-f activate the fullscreen toggle.

[Bug 242595] [NEW] bzr-svn build-dep is incomplete

2008-06-24 Thread Scott Scriven
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bzr-svn

I tried to build bzr-svn on hardy today from upstream (bzr branch lp
:bzr-svn), and found that 'apt-get build-dep bzr-svn' did not install
all the necessary packages. I also needed to install:

  libapr1-dev
  libsvn-dev

I realize the build-dep data represents an older version of bzr-svn than
I was trying to build. This bug is mostly to help for the next version.

Versions:
  source: lp:bzr-svn r1329
build-dep info based on bzr-svn 0.4.9-1 from hardy

[Bug 231301] Re: can't recover from lid close: nVidia C51 [Geforce 6150 Go]

2008-05-23 Thread Scott Scriven
Jeff Martin included Xorg.0.log in question 33142. I'm attaching it
here, too.

As I understand it, there is no crash. It sounded as if switching to a
VT and back to X11 restored the video, but Jeff has ignored my questions
to confirm this.

Jeff, if you want this fixed, you'll have to provide more data and
respond to questions here.

[Bug 231301] Re: can't recover from lid close: nVidia C51 [Geforce 6150 Go]

2008-05-17 Thread Scott Scriven
I'm not sure which this should be attached to:

  - xserver-xorg-video-nv
  - nvidia-graphics-drivers
  - linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24

Some of the shorter details from the original question (33142):

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
Linux jeff-laptop 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 12:47:45 UTC 2008 x86_64

driver
ii nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1ubuntu8 NVIDIA binary kernel module common
files

Jeff also mentioned:
Killing X and logining back into GDM is the only way I have gotten back in. The
screen stays black, flashing in the corners, small lines are all over until X
is killed. ( they look like fabric )

[Bug 117333] Re: tab options not working (from commandline)

2008-05-11 Thread Scott Scriven
BTW, this issue also exists in 2.16.1-0ubuntu1 (edgy) and
2.18.2-0ubuntu1 (gutsy). It probably is in every version of Ubuntu,
since the upstream bug was opened in 2002, and it's not fixed yet.

It doesn't sound like upstream has any interest in fixing it.
Apparently the --tab option was intended only to allow more than one
tab in a new window; it was not supposed to open a new tab in an
existing window.

There are two ways to fix this:

  - Changing the wording of --help to indicate the actual purpose of --tab.
  - Make --tab do what --help says it does.

The second option is probably better, but it may be hard to get the
change accepted upstream.

[Bug 225319] Re: 'cpuinfo' says 9999 MHz scaling not working on P4 laptop

2008-05-02 Thread Scott Scriven
FWIW, the original question was posted here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/31345
It doesn't say much that isn't already said here, but it's good to have these
things linked together.

Leopard, could you boot an earlier Ubuntu release (LiveCD should be
fine, no install required) and check /proc/cpuinfo again? Knowing
whether this bug is in other versions really helps narrow down the
search for the cause of the bug.

[Bug 67996] Re: x11-common preinst script fails (was: aborts /usr/X11R6/bin not empty)

2008-02-28 Thread Scott Scriven
Listing every conceivable package as a conflict is probably not a good
solution. Conflicting explicitly with known 3rd-party packages seems
kludgy at best. It would be safer to assume there are unaccounted files
in /usr/X11R6/bin, because users are unpredictable and do strange
things.

In that case, how about changing the install script to move the contents
of the directory, if any, before removing it and symlinking it to
../bin? Or, handling a failed rmdir by asking the user to manually
resolve the issue, instead of just bailing?

I doubt the results will be perfect, but if I have to choose between a
slightly broken system (custom add-ons broken) or a mostly-broken system
(half of the packages removed, requiring hours of manual recovery), I'd
choose the slight breakage.
