[Bug 314637] Re: debian/{config, postinst} are both broken for dpkg-reconfigure

2009-03-08 Thread Scott Wegner
Thanks for the tip George. I was also having trouble getting
flashplugin-nonfree actually installed. Kept getting the "download or
license refused". Per your hints, here are the steps I took to get it
installed:

1) sudo dpkg-reconfigure debconf
-- Selected GNOME frontend and "medium", although I imagine any settings
would work
2) sudo rm -rf /var/cache/flashplugin-nonfree
-- I'm not really sure if this step was necessary, but it removed the local
cached version which may have been causing trouble
3) sudo aptitude reinstall flashplugin-nonfree
-- Make sure the path to the local version is blank
   -- Accept the license
   -- Repeat

Afterwards, I could see in the terminal the the plugin was truely being
downloaded from Adobe, and Flash is now working once again.

[Bug 339370] [NEW] Cannot disable status notifications

2009-03-07 Thread Scott Wegner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

I just upgraded to Ubuntu Jaunty Alpha 5, and am seeing that Pidgin uses
the new notification system for status updates. However, I'm not very
fond of the updates, as I have a large number of "buddies" in my list,
and so there are frequent notifications for a user signing on/off.

Is there a way to selectively disable the notifications? I would like
to disable the sign on/off notifications, but still see them if somebody
messages me. Currently, I see no option.

[Bug 306916] Re: [i945] screen shows temporary garbage then goes blank, falls into low-graphics mode

2009-01-06 Thread Scott Wegner
As it's actually a friend I'm reporting this for, I don't have immediate
access to the laptop in question. However, I haven't heard any
complaints lately, and I haven't encountered an situation that sounds
like erica's problem. In particular, the problem seems transient, and
doing a full reboot after the error message always seems to bring things
back to normal. We may be experiencing separate problems here.

This is also inconsistent. The more I try to find the conditions for a
working scenario, it seems like the less likely that the DAAP connection
works. However, the work around posted about still allows me to connect
to the DAAP server 100% of the time.

[Bug 308233] Re: banshee fails to connect to functional mt-daapd server

2008-12-15 Thread Scott Wegner
After playing around a little bit more, I've found a potential
"workaround"-- or at least a way to force the shares to connect if they
don't work at first:

1) Make sure mt-daapd server is running
2) Start Banshee. If the DAAP server doesn't show up:
3) In Banshee, go to Edit > Preferences
4) Select the "Extensions" tab, and find the "DAAP" plugin
5) Disable and re-enable the DAAP plugin. The shares should now show up in
the left pane.

To me, this seems to imply that the Banshee DAAP plugin may be leaving
some network resource open between sessions. However, it's hard to say,
and I'm really in no position to start debugging into it. Hope this
workaround is helpful in solving the problem. I've also attached two
new logs:

mt-daapd-log-banshee-restart.txt: mt-daapd log file from /var/log/mt-daapd for
a complete session, where banshee has been run and connects to DAAP using the
steps listed above.
banshee-restart-plugin.txt: console output of running `banshee --debug
--debug-addins`, and connecting to the DAAP server using the workaround above.

[Bug 308233] [NEW] banshee fails to connect to functional mt-daapd server

2008-12-15 Thread Scott Wegner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

I just set up a DAAP server on my desktop computer using mt-daapd so I
can connect from my laptop and listen to my music. However, I'm having
a difficult time connecting to DAAP using Banshee. I can connect to the
DAAP server from Banshee once in a while (and I'm not quite sure what
the conditions are), but if I close Banshee entirely and re-open it
later, I cannot connect to the server. Moreover, even when Banshee
fails to connect, I can open Rhythmbox, and it connects correctly.

Steps to Reproduce:
1) Start mt-daapd on desktop using `sudo mt-daapd` command
2) Start Banshee on laptop. At this point, the DAAP share may or may not show
up in the left column
3) Exit Banshee completely by right-clicking the icon in the notification area,
and clicking "Exit"
4) Start Banshee on laptop again. This time, DAAP server almost always won't
show up.
5) Start Rhythmbox on laptop. Notice that the DAAP server *does* show up in
Rhythmbox

I'd like to emphasize that I still haven't found exactly what condition
causes Banshee not to load the DAAP server. Most often it's after the
second or third time running Banshee. However, sometimes it's not
recognized on the first run, and sometimes it is recognized on
subsequent runs.

I've attached the following log output:
mt-daapd-log-banshee-fail.txt : mt-daapd log file from /var/log/mt-daapd.log on
desktop server. This is a complete session log from starting the server with
`sudo mt-dappd`, trying to connect to it from Banshee on the laptop (and
failing), and then closing the server with `sudo mt-daapd -k`.
banshee-fresh-daap.txt: this is the console output from running Banshee from
the command-line with arguments `banshee --debug --debug-addins`. Notice at
line 138, it finds the DAAP server, but then never "resolves" it.
mt-daap-log-rhythmbox.txt : another mt-daapd log from /var/log/mt-daapd.log on
desktop server. This is a complete session log from starting the server with
`sudo mt-daapd`, starting Rhythmbox on the laptop and *successfully* connecting
to the server, and then closing the server with `sudo mt-daapd -k`.

I wasn't able to get a mt-daapd or banshee log of when banshee
successfully connects, because I wasn't able to connect in ~10 attempts.
I'll try again later, and post logs if it works out.

The versions of banshee and mt-daapd are the latest for Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10.
Specifically:
banshee:
  Installed: 1.4.1-1~intrepid1
mt-daapd:
  Installed: 0.9~r1696.dfsg-2

The desktop and laptop are both running fairly standard installs of
Ubuntu Intrepid. The desktop is running 64-bit version, and the laptop
32-bit. Please let me know if there is any further information I can
provide.

[Bug 306916] [NEW] [intrepid] screen shows temporary garbage then goes blank, falls into low-graphics mode

2008-12-10 Thread Scott Wegner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I installed Ubuntu Intrepid on a friend's laptop, but she is getting
sporadic X crashes during normal usage. Last time it crashed, she was
simply running Firefox, Rhythmbox, and Thunderbird. I don't think any
of these applications are to blame, but it's just to show that she
wasn't using any complex 3D graphics.

Specifically, after working on the laptop for some period of time, the
screen will start to show some garbage artifacts. Then quickly (within
a second or two), the screen will go black, with subtle shades of
green/blue. After a little bit (~10 seconds), an error message will
come up saying "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode", and also
mentions the following error message (twice):

(EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to remove DRM signal handler

I was able to SSH into the computer and pull some log files, etc.
Looking up the error messages turns up many other xorg bug reports, but
they don't seem to be quite the same. It's hard to debug this because
I'm not sure how to trigger the bug. I can't easily obtain a backtrace
because it isn't my laptop, and she generally doesn't keep it running
when not in use.

So, in hopes that somebody else may know more about this crash, (or at
least find the output useful), I'm posting some log files and the output
of lspci -vvvnn. In particular:

Xorg.0.log, after the crash. The relevant error appears to be:

I was experiencing a crash when loading a *.rm stream in a fresh install

Re: [Bug 141613] Re: npviewer.bin crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-11-22 Thread Scott Wegner
It should be noted that, before you install the 64-bit alpha driver,
you should first completely remove the flashplugin-nonfree and
nspluginwrapper packages from your computer. There's an article which
describes the procedure here:
http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Install-Adobe-Flash-Player-64-bit-on-Ubuntu-8-10-98076.shtml

Although really, we should try to limit the discussions here to the
npviewer.bin bug.

[Bug 298822] Re: MonoDevelop NUnit doesn't run NUnit tests

2008-11-16 Thread Scott Wegner
I just did a test by installing previous versions of some monodevelop
packages. I can confirm that the latest package versions from Hardy DO
run the NUnit tests, and the latest versions in Intrepid DON'T run the
tests. Specifically:

Hardy packages which WORK:
monodevelop 1.0+dfsg-1ubuntu3
monodevelop-nunit 1.0+dfsg-1ubuntu3
libnunit2.2.6-cil 2.2.8-1ubuntu2

Intrepid packages which DON'T WORK:
monodevelop 1.0+dfsg-3
monodevelop-nunit 1.0+dfsg-3

In the package changelog, the last two entries have a lot of mentions
about linking against "mono-nunit" rather than the bundles nunit-- I
would imagine this could be part of the problem.

For reference, the project I am trying to run tests against is
maintained in a Launchpad bazaar branch, located at 'lp:pwdhash-sharp'

[Bug 298822] [NEW] MonoDevelop NUnit doesn't run NUnit tests

2008-11-16 Thread Scott Wegner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: monodevelop

I have a C# project with a suite of NUnit tests which I've been testing
in MonoDevelop. I haven't touched the project in a while, but when I
try to run the tests now, none of them run. It appears that something
must've changed in recent versions of MonoDevelop NUnit which would
cause this. I'm not sure of the last functioning version of MonoDevelop
I ran the tests under, but I know it was in Hardy. I can still run the
testing in compiled binaries in other programs, such as gnunit.

Steps the reproduce:
-- Launch MonoDevelop and open .mds solution file
-- Select Project > Rebuild Solution (just to be sure)
-- Select View > Unit Tests, and double-click NUnit test project to run tests
-- Select View > Test Results, which shows "Tests: 0 Failed: 0 Ignored: 0"

-- Launch gnunit, and open compiled *.dll containing NUnit test suite
-- Select "Run" to run all tests. The GUI window now shows "Tests
(assertions): {not 0}" (in my case, 32 tests are run)

Let me know if you need more details, I'm not sure what the problem
could be.

2008-11-15 Thread Scott Wegner
Just ran into this in Intrepid (final). Has anybody tried the patch

[Bug 99508] Re: Titlebar incorrectly drawn with geforce 5/6/7, compiz and human-theme

2008-11-15 Thread Scott Wegner
Just want to point out that the new 180.06 driver is set to support a
small subset of the NVidia cards which are experiencing this bug. In
particular, "GeForce 6xxx and newer NVIDIA GPUs". Users with older
cards (i.e. my GeForce FX Go) will need to stick with the 173.14 driver.

So, this beta driver isn't solving everyone's problems, but hopefully
the NVidia people can backport whatever they fixed in 180.06 to their
legacy drivers.

2008-11-14 Thread Scott Wegner
Also experiencing this issue. It seems like most of these reports are
coming from Dell laptop users; could it be hardware related? I'm
experiencing it on a Dell Inspiron 8600.

To reiterate what der_vegi mentioned, this only happens when selecting
System > Shutdown..., it doesn't happen if I select "Shutdown" from the
FUSA applet.

[Bug 282906] Re: intrepid: gnome-sound-properties no longer allows enabling/disabling of system beep

2008-10-22 Thread Scott Wegner
I can also confirm this. In my Sound Preferences, I have "Play alerts
and sound effects" unchecked, as well as "Play alert sound".
Subsequently, the rest of the options are grayed out. None of the other
system sounds play (as expected). However, I still get the system beep
on shutdown.

I realize that there are a number of workarounds (blacklist the driver,
or apparently check the setting in gconf), but neither of these are
really options for the casual user. There should be a simple setting in
the gnome-sound-properties like there was in Hardy. And if somehow
things changed from Hardy -> Intrepid, the previous setting should be
migrated and honored.

[Bug 287188] [NEW] "Page Down" shortcut doesn't actually scroll to next page in Continuous mode

2008-10-21 Thread Scott Wegner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

When reading through PDF slides, I find it most useful to read one page
at a time via keyboard shortcuts, but have free scrolling capability
with a mouse when necessary. For this reason, I use Evince in
"continuous" mode.

I looked up keyboard shortcuts in Evince via the Help > Contents menu,
then under the "Shortcuts" heading. It states that "Page Down" should
"Go to the next page". However, when I press Page Down / Page Up, they
function similarly to Space / Return / Backspace shortcuts, which scroll
an arbitrary distance. As a result, I am left with half of each slide
on the page, which is not optimal. This only happens when "continuous"
mode is selected-- otherwise the keys work as expected. Also, clicking
on the "Next" or "Previous" buttons on the toolbar behave as expected.

This is either a documentation bug, or a bug in the continuous mode.
Page Up and Page Down should function identically to the Next / Previous
buttons.

I don't think this is document or resolution specific, although I can
provide some examples if necessary.

Other details:
1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System ->
About Ubuntu.
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename'
or by checking in Synaptic.
$ apt-cache policy evince
evince:
  Installed: 2.24.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.24.1-0ubuntu1

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.24.0-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://cosmos.cites.uiuc.edu intrepid/main Packages

3) What you expected to happen
Pressing "Page Down" scrolls a full page

4) What happened instead
Pressing "Page Down" actually functions similarly to spacebar or return, which
scrolls about half a page.

[Bug 277203] [NEW] gnome-sound-properties setting to disable login sound not honored

2008-10-02 Thread Scott Wegner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I just upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid Beta, and noticed that the
settings for some system sounds aren't honored. In particular, I have
the login / logoff sounds set to "Disabled", with the others set to
"Default". However, when I log in, I still hear the default login sound
(which, I might add, isn't the typical login sound I remember from
Hardy, although this may be intentional).

If I uncheck the box for "Play Alerts and Sound Effects", the sound is
correctly disabled. However, I only wish to disable the login/logout
sounds.

Some details:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System ->
About Ubuntu.
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release:8.10

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename'
or by checking in Synaptic.
$ apt-cache policy gnome-control-center
gnome-control-center:
  Installed: 1:2.24.0.1-0ubuntu2

3) What you expected to happen
Navigate to System > Preferences > Sound.
Click on the "Sounds" tab
In the "Alerts and Sound Effects" list, find the entry for "Login" under
"Desktop"
In the second column, change the setting from "Default" to "Disabled"
Close the preference panel, and logout
Log back in, and the login sound should not play

[Bug 273662] [NEW] lastfm should use pulseaudio

2008-09-23 Thread Scott Wegner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lastfm

Last.fm on Ubuntu defaults to using the Alsa sound driver. In fact,
this is the only option. Going to Tools > Options, Radio > Audio >
System, the only option is "Alsa".

Last.fm should also support PulseAudio. This is the default sound
driver in Ubuntu Hardy, and is much more manageable for multiple
programs trying to use sound. If I try to open Last.fm while another
program is trying to play music (Rhythmbox, a flash application in
Firefox), Last.fm displays an error. Moreover, if I try to open
Rhythmbox while Last.fm is open (even if it's not playing), Rhythmbox

[Bug 31776] Re: nautilus-script-* scripts not enabled upon installation

2008-09-15 Thread Scott Wegner
I also find it unintuitive to need to enable a script even after it is
installed. I just installed nautilus-script-collection-svn, and
couldn't figure out for the longest time why I couldn't access the
script.

Enabling by default would be tricky because it is a user-level setting.
Perhaps a better idea would be to give the user some notification
message after install, explaining how to enable the script (and
similarly, some GUI front-end to nautilus-script-manager would be
useful). I imagine the notification happening similar to the dialog
presented when Firefox is upgraded ("Please restart Firefox for updates
to take effect...").

I also have the same problem. I have already download some "sheep

I did have better luck, though, using the command "electricsheep --debug

The server is taken from the listed default when entering "electricsheep

download from the same Coral Cache domain. Perhaps this could be useful
for debugging though.

[Bug 268267] Re: Explain the implications of suggested tweaks

2008-09-09 Thread Scott Wegner
Although perhaps beyond the scope of the utility, it may also be useful
to have a history of actions taken, and also the option to "undo" a
given tweak. This would require backing-up the previous value as well.

[Bug 268267] [NEW] Explain the implications of suggested tweaks

2008-09-09 Thread Scott Wegner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: powertop

Powertop seems to be a very useful tool for analyzing power usage and
suggesting easy system tweaks to decrease power use. However, it is a
little dangerous in that root-level system tweaks are only a hot-key
away, with no real explanation of what's going on.

I think it would be useful if powertop also offered a short explanation of what
each of the suggested tweaks would do, and give any specific warning. Some
examples:
-- I saw one suggestion on my system that recommended that I disable HAL
polling my cdrom. That's fine for now, but what if I insert a CD later? Will
I be able to use the CD? Will this setting revert at reboot?
-- There was another suggestion that I increase the dirty writeback interval
from 0.30 seconds to 15 seconds. This should send a warning to the user, that
this can cause high risk of data corruption in a power outage.

Thank you for your feedback. I'll admit that I'm not too familiar with

subscribing the bug for sponsorship as necessary.

I'll make a new debdiff later today based on the intrepid package. I

[Bug 260577] Re: Remember the Milk service authorizes as "API Application"

2008-08-22 Thread Scott Wegner
Generally when an application applies for an API key for a service (such
as Remember The Milk), they are required to provide some descriptive
information about their program. It looks like the case here is that
Tasque's API key is registered with the name "API Application". You may
be right that it cannot be changed, but I would hope that isn't the
case.

[Bug 260577] [NEW] Remember the Milk service authorizes as "API Application"

2008-08-22 Thread Scott Wegner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tasque

When connecting tasque to a Remember the Milk account for the first
time, the request is made to sync with "API Application". This is not
very descriptive, especially when a user may have many applications
connected to their account they would need to manage. A unique and

[Bug 256500] Re: cfv package recommends bittorrent | bittornado, not transmission

2008-08-10 Thread Scott Wegner
Hi Cameron,

After reading the upstream bug report, I think it is good to change the
link from "Recommends" to "Suggests". However, I still feel that it
would be better to use "transmission" instead of "bittorrent |
bittornado", since Transmission is the default. Granted, the "Suggests"
field really has no bearing on functionality for any apt- client in
Ubuntu. But, it's misleading to imply that a cfv user who already has
Transmission installed, that they will gain any cfv functionality by
downloading either bittorrent or bittornado.

Another alternative would be to add "transmission" to the OR'ed list of
suggests packages. This would also make sense.

This bug was closed as "Fix Released", but I don't think the problem has
quite been addressed yet.

[Bug 256500] [NEW] cfv package recommends bittorrent | bittornado, not transmission

2008-08-09 Thread Scott Wegner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cfv

In Hardy, the default bittorrent is Transmission. However, the "cvf"
utility still recommends "bittorrent | bittornado". Installing with
`sudo aptitude install -r cvf` prompts you to download an alternative
client, even if transmission is installed.

I would recommend that these recommendations be removed, and perhaps
replaced by transmission. Even better would be to link to a virtual
package which is provided by each of these (i.e. "bittorrent-client"),
although I don't think one currently exists.

This seems like a relatively easy fix. If there is interest and no
package maintainer, I could come up with a debdiff / patch.

Details:
The source package you found the bug in:
cfv

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System ->

Re: [Bug 246067] Re: Kernel panic during boot after upgrading to kernel 2.6.26.3-generic

I'm also able to boot without any problem. I'm using VirtualBox 1.6.2

[Bug 220681] [NEW] MythTV Frontend Menu Shortcut broken

2008-04-22 Thread Scott Wegner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv

When I try to start MythTV using the "MythTV Frontend" shortcut in the
GNOME menu, nothing happens. Upon further investigation, the command
used by the menu shortcut is "mythfrontend --service". Running the
command in a terminal gives the error message:

.: 90: Can't open /etc/mythtv/session-settings

However, I am able to start myth-tv with the command "mythfrontend",
without the --service parameter.

I'm not sure what the --service parameter does; it doesn't seem to be
documented under "mythfrontend --help". It obviously depends no
/etc/mythtv/session-settings, which doesn't exist on my system.

Running mythtv version "0.21.0+fixes16838-0ubuntu3" from the Hardy
repositories. Installed on updated Hardy RC on AMD64. I followed the
install instructions for Mythbuntu on Gutsy, configured as a backend and
frontend on an existing desktop. I've previously had trouble with
mythtv and ended up removing the package, but this is now occurring
after a fresh install.

[Bug 187048] Re: virDomainCreateLinux() failed Timed out while reading console startup output

2008-03-28 Thread Scott Wegner
I also get this error. My username is part of the kvm group, that
didn't fix it. Is this a AMD64-specific issue?

Using Hardy beta on AMD64 w/ restricted nvidia video driver.

[Bug 139877] Re: emerald crashed with SIGSEGV in gdk_gc_new_with_values()

2008-03-11 Thread Scott Wegner
I just encountered this issue with the latest Hardy Alpha 6. Using
compiz effects with a customized emerald theme. I was using Alt-Tab
switcher when I got the crash report and all of the title-bars went
missing from my windows. Using 64-bit Ubuntu with Nvidia non-free video
driver.

[Bug 199976] Re: Assumed Timezone is wrong for Hibbing Minnesota

2008-03-11 Thread Scott Wegner
I have a similar issue with my timezone being off. I just upgraded to
Hardy alpha 6 and started noticing this problem (although it was also
around the DST change, so may be unrelated). I live in Champaign, IL,
which is automatically grouped in with America/Indiana/Vincennes. This
gives me EDT, where I should be CST. A more appropriate choice for
timezone would be America/Chicago.

I second the opinion that we should consider timezone regions of a
broader scope-- it doesn't make sense to have many cities represented in
the same timezone-- it only adds clutter.

[Bug 192992] Re: [hardy] pycentral crashed with ValueError in parse_versions()

2008-02-18 Thread Scott Wegner
I can also confirm it-- running latest Hardy alpha x64 in a VMWare
virtual machine. Today's updates killed this and the other two packages
listed above.

I can also confirm this bug. Just installed Hardy Alpha 4 in a VMWare
virtual machine. Upon installing updates from the Update manager, I
came back to this error (the translated version, reported above by
alexrudd).

Running Hardy x64 Alpha 4-- let me know if I can provide more details.

Same errors as described above, running Hardy Alpha 4 inside VirtualBox.
Max resolution is 800x600, Screens and Graphics is completely blank, and
crashes when you try "test".

[Bug 92570] Re: nm-applet dissapears after connecting to vpn

2007-09-07 Thread Scott Wegner
I'm having very similar issues to Ryan above. Has the patched .deb
worked for people? If so, do you think somebody could create an x64
version? I don't know enough about deb's to apply the debdiff posted up
there. :) Thanks
