[Bug 1751175] [NEW] Rhythmbox does not save metadata for FLAC files

2018-02-22 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 17.10, Rhythmbox does not record the metadata
entered in the "Extract" interface when converting CDs to FLAC files. (I
have not checked to see if the same is true with mp3.)

Expected behaviour: I load a CD, and Rhythmbox loads the metadata for
the album from MusicBrainz (or I enter it manually if the album is not
found). If I click Extract, the CD is converted to my preferred file
format (in this case, FLAC), and the metadata is added to the resulting
files.

This was the case on Ubuntu 17.04 and earlier.

Current behaviour: metadata is loaded from MusicBrainz as usual, but
when I extract, most of it is not added to the files.

If the metadata provided is Track Number, Artist, Album, Title, Genre,
Disc number, and Year, I see the following:

The title that results is the file name, for example:
James Ehnes - 02 - Ravel: Berceuse sur le nom de Gabriel Fauré.flac

The Artist, Album, Track Number, and Genre tags are not written.

Curiously, the Disc number and year tags *are* written.

More curiously, as a file is being converted, all the tags display in
Rhythmbox as expected. But the moment the extraction reaches the end of
the file, and the file is saved, the tags disappear.

[Bug 1341387] Re: Opening foodnetwork.ca website crashes xserver

2015-03-04 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Thanks for the response. To be honest, I'd forgotten about this bug. It was so
weird/specific to begin with (only one website ever caused problems). The issue
also seems to have disappeared on upgrading to 14.10.
It never occurred to me to upgrade the BIOS - the utilities are always
Window-specific and I'd never gotten around to learning how to do it on Ubuntu
despite the fact I haven't run Windows since Ubuntu 7.10...

Since the issue doesn't occur on 14.10 shall I mark it as resolved?

[Bug 1341387] Re: Opening foodnetwork.ca website crashes xserver

2014-07-27 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Seems to be a font issue: the crash always happens as the page tries to
load objects from fonts.smdg.ca. I considered blocking smdg.ca with
NoScript but the site becomes unusable. Could this be a duplicate of Bug
#738526? I always get an X crash the first time I load the page after
reboot. If it just kicks me to the login screen I can try again and it
works. A few times the crash has been bad enough that I end up at a
blinking cursor instead of the login screen and I reboot with Ctrl-Alt-
Del. If I go back to the website after a reboot, X crashes again.

[Bug 1341387] [NEW] Opening foodnetwork.ca website crashes xserver

2014-07-13 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

This doesn't occur every single time I try to open the website, but
fairly consistently on the first instance after starting the computer.
(After one xserver crash it usually works the second time.) I'm using
the pipelight plugin to enable the Windows Flash player (since most
websites will not stream shows these days using the older Linux plugin)
but this crash occurs when opening the main page, before the flash
plugin is called.

What happens: I click on the icon for the foodnetwork.ca main page on
the Firefox new tabs page, and X crashes immediately, sending me back to
the login page.

What should happen: the page should load, allowing me to click on the
'videos' link, taking me to the page where I can select the program I
want to watch.

I have never encountered this problem on any other website, but run into
it regularly on this site.

[Bug 1245064] Re: Keyboard Layout Options window is missed in gnome-control-center keyboard

2014-01-05 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Doing a Google search on this issue led me to this report, as well as the
following blog post:
http://www.humans-enabled.com/2013/10/ubuntu-1310-enable-controlaltbackspace.html
The author points out that it's possible to access all of these options from a
terminal. (Although it would be nice it the GUI was still there...) The command

sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

brings up a pretty straightforward interface that takes you though about
half a dozen keyboard options (compose key, etc). The last option is
whether or not to enable Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.

[Bug 783228] Re: Run dialog doesn't use $HOME as the pwd by default when specifying files/directories

2013-09-17 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Actually I just gave this a try running 13.04 and noticed the following:
With Alt+F2 I can type in a path, and if I hit enter at a folder, Nautilus
opens to that folder. If I enter the full path to a file and hit enter, nothing
happens - I have to click on a file.

However, this is probably a non-issue since the expected behaviour occurs if I
use the Unity dash (Super key) instead of Alt-F2.
So I'd say it's running fine: you can open folders with Alt-F2 if you want, but
documents are accessed from the dash, which by my understanding is how things
are supposed to work in Unity anyway.

[Bug 1095962] Re: Empathy GUI does not start

2013-05-11 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I'm also seeing this. I've always used empathy -h in my startup
applications so I'd be signed in in the background - I'd forget to sign
in otherwise, but I also didn't want it popping up every time I signed
in. In the past it would sign you in and then you could get the contacts
list to pop up by clicking on the empathy icon in the email/chat
indicator icon. Now with empathy -h the program seems to be running in
the background, but there's no way to bring up the contacts list -
trying to run empathy from the dash, terminal indicator icon, etc all
fail. The only way I can get it to run is to first run killall empathy
and then relaunch.

[Bug 1168595] Re: HAL no longer works for watching protected flash content in 13.04

2013-04-28 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
No luck here either, and I'm really puzzled as to what the problem is. The
version of hal I was running in 12.10 before upgrading is the same as the one
that installed with 13.04, and my flash version is the same, too. (There was an
earlier problem with a security update for flash breaking things - it wasn't
being recognized as the lated version, so I downgraded.)
I really don't see where the difference lies - same hal, same flash, same
firefox.

2012-11-13 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Christopher, is there anything further you might need me to check? I am
planning to apply a workaround this week of a GeForce 650 I got a good
deal on :-) I'll hold off on swapping the cards in case you need me to
follow up on anything. I'm not using the Firestream for any GP-GPU
computing or any of the heavy number-crunching it's intended for so it's
a bit of a silly card to have in my machine anyway.

[Bug 1075035] Re: 1002:9452 fglrx graphics broken on upgrade with AMD FireStream 9250

2012-11-11 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I've installed 12.04, updated it, and tried installing the 12.11 beta driver
form the link in #6. In case I did something wrong, here are my steps: 1.
Download and extract the file. 2 In the directory of the extracted file, I ran
sudo sh file.run
The installer program came up, but it only returns the message Your graphics
adapter is not supported by this driver. Installation will not proceed.
I tried building an Ubuntu package for the driver but that also failed.

I haven't yet tried the workaround in bug #1058040 that involves
downgrading X.Org, but it seems like any attempts to run a newer driver
on 12.10 fail for me.

With the open-source drivers my previously whisper-quiet desktop
computer sounds like a jet engine when playing a video full-screen, so I
think I'm going to have to either go back to 12.04 or update my graphics
card. (I'd been meaning to do the latter anyway - the firestream card
isn't really appropriate for what I use it for.)

[Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-11-04 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I can add the AMD Firestream 9250 to the list of affected video cards -
just upgraded and I've got the same problems as everyone else in this
report. I'll try the open source drivers until I can get enough of a
working desktop to investigate further. (I'm having trouble even viewing
a website on firefox on a 24 monitor!)

[Bug 1075035] [NEW] 1002:9452 fglrx graphics broken on upgrade with AMD FireStream 9250

2012-11-04 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

I upgraded my desktop at home to 12.10 today, and wound up with complete
failure of graphics: compiz would not work and hence Unity would not start - I
had only a desktop and a terminal (accessed via Ctrl-Alt-T). Screen resolution
was very poor (and used only 75% of the screen on a 24 monitor) - I couldn't
even view the full width of a page in Firefox.
Apparently AMD is still releasing drivers for the Firestream series, so I don't
know what went wrong in my case. I can try reinstalling fglrx to see what
happens, or whatever suggestions might help diagnose the issue.

WORKAROUND: I've managed to get back to a working desktop by purging
everything related to fglrx and using the open source drivers.

[Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 legacy cards in Quantal

2012-11-04 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Sorry for the mix-up. The problem sounded identical to mine, and I was
limited in my abilities to search around since my screen resolution was
shot to the point that firefox was too wide to fit on the screen. I've
added a new bug and subscribed you as suggested.

[Bug 1075035] Re: 1002:9452 fglrx graphics broken on upgrade with AMD FireStream 9250

2012-11-04 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I tried the workaround, but ran into some problems:
 - in step 5, the command apt-get -y reinstall was not recognised. The
reinstall seems to be the wrong code. I couldn't recall what the correct
command was, so I did this step via synaptic.
 - step 6 failed because there was no package fglrx-installer. The repository
I added in Step 2 didn't have this package, but it did have plain ol' fglrx,
so I tried installing that instead.
 - In the final step (7), the command aticonfig --initial returned
aticonfig: No supported modules present

Rebooting resulted in the same mess as before, so I purged fglrx again,
and rebooted with the open source drivers.

Thanks for the help.

[Bug 646724] Re: not all files show up in files-place

2012-08-06 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I noticed an issue today related to the problem of indexing files to make them
searchable in Unity: I have a laptop at work and a desktop at home that are
both synced via Ubuntu One. If I decide to reorganise files on one computer,
Ubuntu One will execute the same reorganisation on the other computer, but on
the second one, I'll lose access to the files via the Unity Dash. (In my case
I have documents for a course I'm teaching right now - tests, assignments,
handouts, etc. - and again in the next semester, so I've added a date hierarchy
to my folder structure.)
What's the current state of affairs? Will Unity update its file indexing, or
will these files only make their way back in as I access them again from
Nautilus? It would be nice to be able to move files around on synced computers
without breaking the ability to search via the Unity Dash. (Now that I'm used
to the dash, it feels like a huge pain to have to open up Nautilus and click my
way through the folders!)

[Bug 1006824] Re: Default internet search engine is Microsoft's Bing

2012-07-06 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
This is also the case if you use the search bar within Thunderbird - it
offers to search within your messages but also on Bing. I guess they got
a bag of cash from MSFT? I can't find anywhere to change it in the
preferences. I tried poking around in the Config editor; there were two
strings referring to default search engine that I tried setting to
Google. But there must be somewhere else that isn't accessible where the
search engine is defined, since it doesn't offer Google as an option.
(On the plus side, however, it now skips over Option 1 (Google) since it
doesn't know what to do with it, and goes to Option 2, which is Yahoo.
So at least Bing is gone.) I searched for any other strings involving
Bing and couldn't find any, so I don't know where the URL for Bing is
defined.

[Bug 865672] Re: Adobe Flash Player Settings dialogue does not respond to mouse clicks

2012-05-08 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
In 10.04 and earlier compiz was enabled by default but could be toggled
on and off. You can either hit Alt-F2 and then enter metacity --replace
or you can install the compiz fusion icon (this may have been called
fusion-icon; it's been a long time since I was on 10.04.) This gives you
a little icon in the system tray you can use to switch between compiz
and metacity as your window manager.

[Bug 984141] [NEW] Status menu not readable using Radiance theme

2012-04-17 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

The drop-down status menu in Empathy (online, away, etc.) is currently
being displayed with grey text on a slightly darker grey background,
making it impossible to read. If you mouse-over a particular status the
text changes to white and it becomes readable, but the menu as a whole
requires some very strenuous squinting at the moment.

[Bug 971177] [NEW] When video chat fails on Empathy using Google Talk, pulseaudio becomes unavailable to other applications

2012-04-01 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

Occasionally when someone tries to video-call me via Google Talk and I answer
using Empathy the chat fails. (This is probably unrelated to the bug and more
to do with Google's chat protocol). I'm filing this against pulseaudio because
once this happens, pulseaudio stops responding and I have to restart the
computer to get things working again. (I could probably figure out how to
restart pulseaudio without restarting the computer but anyhow...)
Using Empathy to connect to someone via Google Talk has always been a bit flaky
for me so that's not a big deal, but if I try to use another program such as
Skype, or Google Talk via Gmail, I'm unable to do anything because these
programs won't be able to access my webcam/microphone.
I'm not 100% sure this is a pulseaudio problem since there's no automatic crash
report but when I try to restart the system usually notifies me that it needs
to force-close pulseaudio, so that's my reason for guessing this is where the
problem lies. It could also be an Empathy bug.

Summary:

What happens:
 - Video chat using Empathy fails.
 - I try to work around this using either Skype or Gmail chat.
 - Workaround fails because my microphone and webcam are no longer working.
What I expect to happen:
 - Video chat using Empathy fails. (Well, it would be nice if this didn't
happen at all, but one step at a time!)
 - Microphone and webcam then become available to other programs so I can
attempt to establish the chat via another program.

Further details: the webcam is a Logitech C270 and the microphone is the
built-in USB microphone of the webcam.

My apologies for the somewhat uncertain report. If anyone has
suggestions has to how I can better track down and report the problem,
please let me know.

[Bug 872207] Re: When Firefox is running in Unity, drop-down menus sometime close when opened

2012-03-06 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Other programs affected by this (or a similar) issue are editors like Kile and
TexMaker for LaTeX. I've noticed this with both programs: maximize the window,
use Ctrl-Alt-Arrows to navigate away (perhaps to look something up) and then
return. The window won't be properly focused, meaning that it won't accept
further text input until re-focused.
If the window is not maximized I can usually regain focus by clicking on the
text area.

usual, and report any bugs that come up as I try to carry out my usual

2012-02-21 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
The segfault in ccsm occurs with the current version in 11.10, but I would not
be surprised if it's already fixed in 12.04. I don't have the time at the
moment for alpha testing but once 12.04 hits beta I'll upgrade my home computer
and see if I can reproduce the bug. (I do some work at home so the first beta
is usually the threshold for stability where I'm willing to go live with it.)
If I get some free time I might try installing the current build in a VM, but
my desktop at home is several years old and VirtualBox performance is less than
ideal.

[Bug 756901] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in std::vectorWrapableHandlerGLWindowInterface, 5u::Interface, std::allocatorWrapableHandlerGLWindowInterface, 5u::Interface ::_M_insert_aux()

2012-02-19 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
As I recall, this was a compiz crash while changing settings in ccsm, during
beta testing of 11.04 - so the crash report was generated automatically by the
system. Right now I'm running 11.10, so apport does not show any crashes when
they occur.
However, compiz is overall more stable. It's still possible to cause compiz to
restart while playing with the settings, but I have to try a lot harder than
before.

Just to see if I could, I enabled the desktop cube. I managed to do
this, although it requires temporarily disabling the Unity plugin, which
causes a compiz restart. The cube is buggy - windows flicker in and out
while changing workspaces - but obviously Unity was never meant to work
with the cube. (This test led to the following observation while trying
to return to my original settings: it is necessary to disable the
'rotate cube' plugin before disabling the 'desktop cube' plugin. Trying
to disable the desktop cube first causes ccsm to segfault.)

So to sum up, there's a segfault with ccsm that probably shouldn't
happen, but that's a different bug. I can still make compiz restart by
playing with settings, but the system recovers. My guess is that the
original bug that generated this report was addressed.

I think this bug was also responsible for Bug #872207 (aka the most annoying
bug in Unity for a number of users!)
Since upgrading I haven't been able to cause the problem described in this bug.
I'll keep testing, since the problem doesn't occur on every workplace switch,
but it usually happens every two or three times and I've tried at least a dozen
with no problems.

[Bug 838739] Re: Wrong colors and lines with resolutions above 640x480

2012-01-13 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I have all the i386 libraries from the ppa installed, along with
skype:i386 from the partner repository. (Of course via synaptic; I still
don't like using the Software Centre). I even tried replacing v4l-utils
with the i386 version. I'm running skype with LD_PRELOAD and always
with the same result. The problem also persists for me with video in
Google chat via gmail, although it's been solved for the Cheese webcam
booth.

[Bug 864661] Re: Remove empathy notification icon redundancy in Ubuntu 11.10

2011-12-15 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
No, the issue is that Empathy notifications are now built into the
indicator-applet (the envelope icon), but if you allow 'all' in the system
tray, you get an additional panel icon for Empathy, the legacy icon that
existed prior to Ubuntu's new notification system.
I'm no longer dealing with this issue since in 11.10 enough bugs have been
ironed out for me to stick with the default systray whitelist, which blocks the
second Empathy icon.

[Bug 872207] Re: When Firefox is running in Unity, drop-down menus sometime close when opened

2011-11-23 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
This has been a problem since Natty. I reported it in Bug #796897 which has
just been marked as a duplicate of this one. As mentioned above it's some kind
of issue with how compiz is giving focus to windows. (Some things are better in
Oneiric - for example, in Natty I used to have the problem that the only way to
give focus to the Contact List window in Empathy was to use the Alt-Tab
switcher, but this is no longer a problem.)
I can't reproduce it every time I use Ctrl+Alt+Arrows and haven't figured out
what triggers it exactly. Using the Unity launcher panel to select a window
avoids the problem, but on a netbook with a trackpad and no mouse it's much
easier to use the keyboard, and I keep Firefox maximised in its own workspace,
so I see this at least a few times per day.

[Bug 845436] Re: Missing new email notifications in oneiric

2011-11-09 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Problem solved in my case: I kept the settings for Thunderbird from my 11.04
install, and just noticed that the old add-on to provide notifications via
Ubuntu's notification system (which has been superseded in 11.10) was not
disabled.
Disabling 'Messaging Menu and Unity Launcher Integration 0.8.2' resolved the
problem for me, since this has been replaced by 'Global Menu Bar Integration
2.0.1'. I'm going to go ahead and mark this as invalid since the 'bug' seems to
be a configuration problem in each case.
However... it does remain true that people using Thunderbird in 11.04 who
upgrade (or keep their /home directory in a clean install) may experience
problems, and may not find their way to this report. (On the other hand, if you
figured out how to integrate Thunderbird with Unity in 11.04, you'll probably
figure out what's wrong, as we all apparently have!)

I stopped trying to use gnome shell not long after reporting the bug; partly

[Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken

2011-10-29 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Mark (et al),
I'd like to make a suggestion that I think would mitigate a certain fraction of
the complaints, and requires no new code, which is simply an info page that's
linked prominently on the Ubuntu website (perhaps on the downloads page).
Let me explain: I've been reading the 'Unity MEGA forum' in the Ubuntu forums
off and on (it's sufficiently torturous that as a means of procrastinating from
my job as a mathematics researcher, it's a fairly brief distraction). A lot of
the complaints that see are along the following lines: I can't do X in Unity!
I'm so angry, GARR!! I'm telling everyone I know to switch to Mint!, where
X is something that in fact *can* be done, had the complainer bothered to look
into it.
So I'm suggesting something like an FAQ, but geared towards end-users expecting
certain behaviour from their desktop. Perhaps there could be a paragraph along
the following lines: We've designed the Unity desktop for insert
reasons/properties here, and think you'll really enjoy it. However, we
recognise that one interface can't possibly please everyone, and that's why
Ubuntu offers you choices. Supported desktop environments include Gnome shell,
Gnome fallback, KDE, XFCE, LDXE...
This could perhaps be followed by a little chart outlining the pros/cons of
each desktop, and simple instructions on how to enable them (or suggesting that
the user download *ubuntu instead).
For fine-tuning in Unity, a simple user's FAQ might help. This could include a
tutorial on basic keyboard and mouse operations (such as the various Super
shortcuts, configuring the launcher, etc.) I know these are out there for
those who look, but if it was prominent, it would be easier to address
complaints. (For example even today you'll find people complaining about how
they hate the launcher because they can't reorder the icons, add new icons,
resize icons, etc, even though all this is possible.)
Another example: Q: I really don't like this global menu, can I get rid of it?
A: We suggest keeping it for the following reasons But if it really
bothers you, simply remove the indicator-appmenu package.
(It could just be whining, but there really are people claiming that they're
abandoning Ubuntu over the global menu. Thirty seconds on Google resolves the
problem but hey, maybe switching distros is still less work!?)

Anyway, I think a bit of basic info like that, made as prominent as
seems reasonable, might help.

[Bug 844385] Re: Display problems for gnome-sudoku in every theme installed by default

Andries:
For the suggestions you're asking for it's more appropriate to use either the
Ubuntu forums (ubuntuforums.org) or Ask Ubuntu (askubuntu.com) - Launchpad is
more for reporting bug info to the developers.
You won't be the first person with questions about things like disk layout, so
first thing to try is a Google search. Almost certainly you'll get a few
results involving old Ubuntu forum discussions with info. Ask Ubuntu is newer

No programming needed. Open up the Update Manager, and click on the
Settings... button bottom left; this opens up the Software Sources
window. Click on the Updates tab, and then check off the box next to
where it says Pre-released updates (oneiric-proposed). Close the
software sources window, and click on the Check button in update manager
to reload the software info. It should then ask you to update the
sudoku program to the latest version with the fix.

[Bug 838577] Re: GNOME Shell display problems with FGLRX

But with the Fedora 15 Live CD you'd be using the open source drivers -
GNOME shell works fine with those, last time I tried. (I had Fedora 15
installed for awhile but had all kinds of pain with broken packages,
system settings, etc.) It's a bit of a hassle to get fglrx drivers
installed on Fedora so it's unlikely you were using them on the Live CD,
unless I'm missing something.

[Bug 868832] [NEW] system fails to properly detect hardware at boot

2011-10-05 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

Reporting since this has happened twice now - although it does not
happen every time. Not sure what's going on so I'm filing under Gnome.
At login I will have no sound and the indicator-network icon will
indicate that there is no network adapter installed; however, if I open
firefox I can check that the internet is working just fine. Sound will
also generally fail to work, so I open the Gnome 3 sound settings GUI to
see if it's switched to the wrong hardware setting, and discover that it
is showing no hardware at all. Bluetooth is also not detected,
resulting in a crash of blueman-applet. Trying to log out or reboot
causes the system to hang at a blank wallpaper screen. (At this point

[Bug 864661] Re: Remove empathy notification icon redundancy in Ubuntu 11.10

2011-10-04 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I am also seeing the old legacy notification icon for Empathy, and can find
nowhere in the settings to remove it. Of course, you can get rid of the old
icon by removing empathy from the systray whitelist using dconf-editor. But
for me it's easiest to set that to 'all' because I have a few programs that
aren't whitelisted by default that use the old notification area.
There used to be an option in empathy that hid the speech bubble icon (so only
the envelope is left) but I no longer see such an option.

[Bug 865672] [NEW] Adobe flash settings 'allow-deny' dialogue does not respond

2011-10-03 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

Adobe flash player is configured on my system to ask before a website sets a
flash cookie, so if a video (eg on youtube) is played, a dialogue box will pop
up asking me whether or not to allow the website to store a cookie on my
machine. However, nothing happens when I click on either 'allow' or 'deny', so
the box stays put and I can't view or control the video playing beneath it.
On this machine I upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10; in 11.04 there was a program
for adjusting the flash player settings in the System Settings control panel,
but that program is no longer there and not accessible via the dash, so there
is no obvious way to just configure flash to allow all cookies and avoid the
dialogue box.

[Bug 860485] Re: bad default setting: suspend after 30min when plugged in

2011-10-03 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I'm getting the suspend issue as well, in spite of setting things to don't
suspend - surprisingly, it suspended even while playing music - I'd set a
playlist to listen to while doing some work away from the computer, and had
things come to a halt after 30 minutes. Everything is up to date on my machine.
What's worst is that this is on my desktop, which was never really meant to
suspend - the hardware's a bit older and the motherboard was fairly basic even
at the time of purchase. Once it suspends, I've got about a 50% chance of a
successful resume that doesn't require hitting the reset button.

[Bug 844385] Re: border for 3x3 squares not visible in most standard themes

2011-09-27 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I should add that this game does not display properly in every theme
available on a standard Ubuntu install. In some cases the lines and
borders do not show up; in one theme numbers that are entered are drawn
in white on a white background, in another, numbers in the highlighted
square are not visible. The most tolerable is the low-contrast theme,
where you can get almost everything to display correctly, as long as the
highlighted square is one of the permanent numbers (numbers you've added
are drawn in the same colour as the highlighting). In all other themes
the game is rendered nearly unplayable.

** Summary changed:

- border for 3x3 squares not visible in most standard themes
+ Display problems for gnome-sudoku in every theme installed by default

[Bug 828932] Re: can't focus Contact List while a conversation window is open

2011-09-15 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I should add that this remains a problem in the latest version of Unity in
11.10. The general bug summary is the following:
1. There are never problems if the Unity launcher is used to select a window -
this always results in proper window focus.
2. To reproduce the bug (it doesn't happen 100% of the time, but it will always
happen after a couple of tries) have Firefox or Empathy open on one workspace,
and switch to another, and do something there (eg check email in Thunderbird).
Then, return to the original workspace using the keyboard (Ctrl-Alt-Arrows) and
use the mouse to select the window by clicking on it.
3. In the case of Empathy, you will not be able to get the application menu to
show in the global appmenu. In the case of Firefox, things will seem to be
working (eg clicking links will be fine) until you try to do something with a
context menu (eg right clicking, or the drop-down menu in the URL bar).
Sometimes clicking will fail to bring up the context menu at all, and when it
does, it will disappear as soon as the mouse cursor is moved.
4. If I unfocus the window (eg by clicking on the desktop or changing back to
another workspace) and then use the Launcher to refocus, normal behaviour
returns.

[Bug 822672] Re: The indicators shows a big white square when systray whitelisted

2011-09-12 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
This bug seems to have returned, or else its cousin has arrived on the scene.
See the attached screenshot taken while applying updates today. Note: to make
sure it was not due to a compiz crash that had occurred, and that it wasn't
fixed by the latest updates, I ran apt-get update again, resulting in the big
black square in the screenshot.
(It seems I can only do one attachment, and I don't want to start spamming
inboxes, so I'm only including last screenshot. I have another with a giant
grey 'package manager working' icon the size of the black box, another with a
regular-sized orange 'updates ready' icon that appears about 2 cm below the
panel, and another with a 'restart required' icon about twice the usual size.)

[Bug 838577] Re: GNOME Shell display problems with FGLRX

OK, although it's been my experience with Ubuntu up to and including
11.04 that with the open source driver most games with 3D graphics are
unplayable - even something like SuperTuxKart. So I'd rather have
Unity+Games than GNOME Shell with no games, especially since my
preferences lean towards Unity anyway :-)

[Bug 626016] Re: Swell Foop game does not work

2011-09-10 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
The patch wasn't mine! I think it came from upstream and was posted
here by Jonathan. Although, this may all be moot, since in 11.10
testing it looks like both swell-foop and lightsoff have been pulled
from the gnome-games package - in fact they're gone from the
repositories altogether. So perhaps these two ended up being more
trouble than they're worth.

[Bug 844385] [NEW] border for 3x3 squares not visible in most standard themes

2011-09-07 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

This is not so much a bug as a design problem in the latest version of
gnome-sudoku, but it leads to serious playability issues. Since 3x3
squares are relevant to game play, there is typically a darker border
around those squares as compared to the individual squares. The only
theme where this border is in fact darker is high contrast inverse.
With the high contrast them there is no border at all, even around the
individual squares. With most others, (Adwaita, Ambiance) there is no
difference in the thickness of the individual and 3x3 borders. The game
should display correctly regardless of theme.

[Bug 839838] Re: Unity session results in no desktop and 100% cpu for compiz

2011-09-04 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Omer: with the latest updates my account still will not work, but with a
different account I am indeed able to log in. So, presumably there is some
setting I've customised to create the problem, but I've no idea what it might
be (or why the problem only occurred after Friday's updates). On my account,
things fail pretty much completely - it does not even get as far as drawing the
wallpaper. The lightdm wallpaper remains, and if I switch to a virtual
terminal and then back again, the image of the virtual terminal stays on the
screen.
Unity 2D and Gnome Classic (no effects) work, although Gnome Classic is a bit
of a mess. I'll see if I can start Gnome shell, but I think I tried that on
Friday and failed.

screenlets; I disabled these in case that was the culprit. (That turned out to
be slightly tricky, since 'Startup Applications' has been removed from the
system settings panel. Fortunately, it's still around as a standalone program.)
I guess I could fix things by doing a clean install, but I'm guessing I won't
be the only one who tries going the upgrade route.
Right now I can only use Unity 2D or a really buggy Gnome fallback session.

[Bug 840867] Re: flashplugin-installer : Depends: flashplugin-downloader

2011-09-04 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Well, as a 'workaround' there is always the native 64-bit flash player,
which is now in beta. There is the sevenmachines ppa, or the flash-aid
plugin for firefox. (I only recently heard about flash-aid, which does
some sort of optimisation that has some embedded videos working that
didn't work before - certain news sites with their own video players
don't seem to work right with the 64-bit plugin otherwise. So in other
words, it seems pretty good!)

[Bug 838577] Re: Unity panel appears under gnome shell panel

2011-09-03 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I've managed to figure out that it's in fact not the Unity panel, but
the menu bar for Nautilus that's hiding under the Gnome panel. (This
became obvious in instances where either the Gnome shell or the Unity
shell failed to load, and I was left with just an empty desktop and the
menu bar.)

[Bug 839838] [NEW] Unity session results in no desktop and 100% cpu for compiz

2011-09-02 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

I applied all the current updates for 11.10 as of 30 minutes ago, which
required a system restart. After restarting, I am unable to start a
unity session. Opening a virtual terminal shows compiz running with
100% CPU. I tried killing compiz and Xorg (compiz required kill -9) and
logging in again, with the same result. I killed X a second time and
started a Gnome session instead. (The second time I killed X only, and
compiz continued to run with 100% CPU at the login screen (lightdm) and
after starting a Gnome session. (In fact the system thought I was
running Unity when I ran ubuntu-bug.)

Maybe. But that bug is a lot older than this problem. With updates
current as of last night Unity+Compiz ran with no problems (well, no
major ones, anyway). The issue only occurred after applying updates this
morning. I could look at the history to see if there's an obvious
culprit, although there were something like 74 updates.

[Bug 822672] Re: The indicators shows a big white square when systray whitelisted

2011-08-31 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Thanks for the fix Omer - for me this was really causing problems.
Probably it's not an issue on a clean install, but without whitelisting
everything I was experiencing major loss of functionality: I thought I'd
returned my settings to the defaults, but I kept getting notification
bubbles like 'An application has crashed... click the notification icon
for details' or 'System restart required, click the notification icon
for details'. But there were no notification icons, so I couldn't
access crash reports, and had to put back the ugly white box!

[Bug 838404] [NEW] opening existing file with gksu gedit creates untitled document

2011-08-31 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

When opening a text file as super user, using gksu gedit , the
requested file opens, along with a second, untitled document. This is
slightly annoying, since gedit will ask if the untitled document should
be saved once the desired file has been edited and gedit is closed.

[Bug 838577] [NEW] Unity panel appears under gnome shell panel

2011-08-31 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

Major display issues with Gnome Shell on a clean and updated install of
11.10. I suspect it's due to running ATI graphics with fglrx since I
don't have issues on my netbook. Basically the top panel is completely
garbled and a mess of different colours; at times I can notice the
global menu from the Unity panel in the background of the Gnome Shell
panel. Also various letters in the panel text appear as teal-coloured
rectangles of various sizes. I tried to get a screenshot, but the
screenshot tool just displays an empty wallpaper. Display issues also
occur for example in the Alt+F2 dialogue box.

[Bug 796897] Re: Context menus don't work properly after keyboard-based workspace navigation in Unity

2011-08-30 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
This is still a problem in 11.10 - I've upgraded my netbook to Oneiric
Alpha 3. I have this problem on both my desktop (64 bit, AMD graphics)
and netbook (32 bit, Intel graphics). I notice the bug with Firefox
most often but it's probably more correct to classify this as a Unity
bug - there is some problem with the way it handles windows - if you use
the keyboard to navigate to a workspace, and then use the mouse to focus
a window, the window does not always get properly focused. I noticed
this with other applications (eg Empathy) as well.

[Bug 822672] Re: The indicators shows a big white square when systray whitelisted

2011-08-30 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Same problem here. In my case, I still had the old setup for update-
notifier where an icon appears when updates are available, because I
preferred that behaviour to having the window pop up. As far as I can
tell, choosing this behaviour also causes crash reports to appear in the
systray; one of the reasons I'd whitelisted it (back when testing Natty)
was that I was not getting crash reports otherwise. Attaching a
screenshot with update and crash notifications.

[Bug 837073] [NEW] legacy notification icons do not display properly

2011-08-29 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded to 11.10 on my eeePC netbook. In 11.04 I had used
dconf-editor to whitelist all programs for the notification area (I
still preferred the old notification icon method for updates, and I
wasn't getting bug reports without enabling the notification icon for
apport). Clearly, this is not compatible with 11.10, as the attached
screenshot shows. For people who are upgrading rather than doing a
clean install, perhaps the update manager needs to check these settings
and change them if necessary.
