[Bug 2069966] Re: thunderbird snap breaks autoconfiguration

2024-07-19 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report, indeed that seems something to fix where
the sandboxing limits access. Could you perhaps report it also upstream
on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Thunderbird ?

[Bug 2072970] Re: Ubuntu settings (gnome control center) does not open.

2024-07-15 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Run these commands:
journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
journalctl -b-1 > prevjournal.txt
and attach the resulting text files here.

2. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

3. If step 2 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 2072777] Re: OK and cancel both unclear do nothing for snap refresh notification

Notify-osd doesn't handle notification actions and that's usually the
reason why you get a fallback dialog. I think the notification is coming
from snapd-desktop-integration and not snapd though so that would be the
right component to target? I'm adding it to the bug

[Bug 2072772] [NEW] The package is build without malcontent

2024-07-11 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug reported:

* Impact

The package is currently built with malcontent disabled because the
package was in universe.

The corresponding MIR is now approved, including for Noble (lp:
#1892456). The package got promoted in Oracular already.

The malcontent library is needed to provide parental control integration
with something OEM partners need (new regulations make the feature
mandatory to sell new devices in France starting this summer, other
countries are following)

* Test case

- log as an admin user
- install malcontent-gui (we don't plan to install it by default due to depends
issues but oem will)
- create another non admin user (if there isn't already one existing)
- start gnome-control-center
- switcht to the users panel
- select the other users in the right pane

-> a 'parental control' entry should be displayed

* Regression potential

The option is just display an entry to start the malcontent-gui
interface. A problem would only impact the users panel, if the patch was
wrong it could be impact on the layout of that page or showing that item
when it shouldn't

* Other information

We will need to promote the malcontent source and libmalcontent-0-0
binary. Since we can't promote things in release it means we will need
to coordinate with an archive admin to copy the package in noble-updates
and promote it there

[Bug 2072751] [NEW] The ubuntu-desktop-bootstrap hook isn't working

2024-07-11 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug reported:

* Impact

The current ubuntu-desktop-bootstrap hook has some errors and isn't
working properly as a result

- it's reporting issues to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-desktop-
bootstrap which is the wrong project (bootstrap is the snap name but
it's built from ubuntu-desktop-provision)

- it's failing to attach the subiquity log since that one isn't user
readable

- the name of some of the curting files is incorrect

* Test case

- start a Noble desktop ISO
- install the apport package update
- do an installation, select custom partitioning and define a vfat partition to
use for /boot (which is going to make the installer error out)
- go through the other installer steps, keeping default
- wait for the error screen to show
- run
$ ubuntu-bug ubuntu-desktop-installer
- log into launchpad and submit the report

The report should be sent against the ubuntu-desktop-provision project
on launchpad and include ubuntu_bootstrap.log, subiquity-server-
debug.log and curtin-install.log/curtin-error.tar

* Regression potential

The changes in the ubuntu-desktop-bootstrap hook and should impact only
reporting against that component

[Bug 1892456] Re: [MIR] malcontent

2024-07-10 Thread Sebastien Bacher
We would like to see the package also promoted in Noble, could the MIR
give their opinion on the request?

The version in Noble is 0.11.1 (vs 0.12.0 which was promoted in
Oracular). The security review was done on 0.10.0 so doesn't rely on
changes from 0.12.

The 0.12 update doesn't include changes that should make a difference on
the review outcome in my opinion but I'm still attaching the debdiff for
MIR team consideration (there are a bunch of fixes but also strings
changed which make unpratical to try to SRU that version to Noble)

** Patch added: "Debdiff between Noble and Oracular"

[Bug 2062394] Re: Update xdg-desktop-portal to 1.18.4

2024-07-10 Thread Sebastien Bacher
I've been using 1.18.4-1ubuntu2 for a few weeks and I'm exercising those
on a regular basis with the snaps I'm using (mostly firefox, chromium,
thunderbird), tested a few extra ones including the flutter-portal-tests
and went through the testplan and things work as expected.

[Bug 2066269] Re: [MIR] sysprof

2024-07-09 Thread Sebastien Bacher
I've subscribed 'desktop-packages' to the ubuntu sysprof package now

** Description changed:

  [Availability]
The package sysprof is already in Ubuntu universe.
The package sysprof build for the architectures it is designed to work on.
It currently builds and works for all Ubuntu architectures.
  Link to package https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sysprof

  [Rationale]
  - The package sysprof is required in Ubuntu main
  - The package sysprof will not generally be useful for a large part of our
user base, but is important/helpful still because it is part of an Ubuntu
initiative to focus on performance engineering, both for Ubuntu itself and for
developers who build their projects on top of Ubuntu. The size of the sysprof
app is fairly small and we envision sysprof as the latest of the small
utilities that are included in a default Ubuntu desktop. (Disk Usage Analyzer
[baobab] is another one of these utilities.)
  + Related to
https://ubuntu.com/blog/ubuntu-performance-engineering-with-frame-pointers-by-default
  - There is no other/better way to solve this that is already in main or
should go universe->main instead of this.
  - The package sysprof is required in Ubuntu main no later than August 15 due
to a Ubuntu Desktop goal of including sysprof in the default 24.10 install.
  - The binary package sysprof needs to be in main to achieve the goal of
providing a GUI performance profiling tool (command-line tools were included by
default in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, but the Desktop Team and others did not have the
capacity to also handle getting sysprof into the default install then.)

  [Security]
  - No CVEs/security issues in this software in the past
  + https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/sysprof
  + https://ubuntu.com/security/cves?package=sysprof

  - no `suid` or `sgid` binaries
  - no executables in `/sbin` and `/usr/sbin`
  - Package does install services, timers or recurring jobs
  + /usr/lib/systemd/system/sysprof3.service
  + /usr/libexec/sysprofd
  + /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.gnome.Sysprof3.service

  - Security has been kept in mind and common isolation/risk-mitigation
patterns are in place utilizing the following features:
+ App uses /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.gnome.sysprof3.policy to gain the
elevated permissions it needs to use ptracing in the Linux kernel.
  - Package does not open privileged ports (ports < 1024).
  - Package does not expose any external endpoints
  - Package makes use of ptracing in the Linux kernel because it is required
for the system-wide profiling feature that is essential to this app. I
recommend Security Team review.

  [Quality assurance - function/usage]
  - The package works well right after install

  [Quality assurance - maintenance]
  - The package is maintained well in Debian/Ubuntu/Upstream and does not have
too many, long-term & critical, open bugs
  - Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sysprof/
  - Debian https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=sysprof
  - Upstream https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/sysprof/-/issues
  - The package does not deal with exotic hardware we cannot support

  [Quality assurance - testing]
  - The package runs a test suite on build time, if it fails it makes the build
fail, link to build log
  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sysprof/46.0-1build1

  - The package runs an autopkgtest, and is currently passing on all
architectures except for i386
  https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/sysprof

  - We also will do manual testing of the GUI app

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/Sysprof

  [Quality assurance - packaging]
  - debian/watch is present and works
  - debian/control defines a correct Maintainer field
  - This package does not yield massive lintian Warnings, Errors
  - Please link to a recent build log of the package
  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sysprof/46.0-1build1
  - Please attach the full output you have got from `lintian --pedantic` as an
extra post to this bug.
  - Lintian overrides are present, but ok because the overrides document why
those Lintian warnings should be ignored.

  - This package does not rely on obsolete or about to be demoted packages.
  - This package has no python2 or GTK2 dependencies

  - The package will be installed by default, but does not ask debconf questions
  - Packaging and build is easy, link to debian/rules
  https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/sysprof/-/blob/debian/latest/debian/rules

  [UI standards]
  - Application is end-user facing, Translation is present, via standard
gettext system
  - End-user applications that ships a standard conformant desktop file
  + /usr/share/applications/org.gnome.Sysprof.desktop

  [Dependencies]
  - There are further runtime dependencies that are not yet in main
+ MIR for libdex is at LP: #2066262
+ MIR for libpanel is at LP: #2066272

  [Standards compliance]
  - This package correctly follows FHS

[Bug 2068809] Re: changelogs not listed for PPA packages

2024-07-08 Thread Sebastien Bacher
** Description changed:

+ * Impact
+
When clicking on a package from a PPA in update-manager, the "Changes
for XXX versions:" section will say:

"This update does not come from a source that supports changelogs."

- and on the console it dumps:

+ those are using ppa.launchpadcontent.net now

- ERROR:root:Unable to find a valid PPA candidate URL.

+ - enable a ppa including an update for a package you have installed
+ - start update-manager and select that package
+ - check the long description at the bottom
+
+ it should display the changelog entry for the update

- The reason is that in _extract_ppa_changelog_uri() in
/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/UpdateManager/Core/MyCache.py it checks only for
ppa.launchpad.net but nowadays the URI will contain ppa.launchpadcontent.net

+ * Regression potential

+ The change is in the _extract_ppa_changelog_uri() function so a

[Bug 2064646] Re: Click on the topbar invokes the enhanced tiling on maximized windows

2024-07-08 Thread Sebastien Bacher
sorry for that, the description has been edited now

** Description changed:

+ * Impact
+
If you have a maximized window and click on the gnome bar at the top (on
empty space, not on the clock or the icons) the maximized window shrinks
- and goes to the position seen in the screenshot.
+ and goes to the position seen in the screenshot. An orange overlay is
+ then displayed over the top half of the screen

- Turning off enhanced tiling fixes the issue.
+ * Test

- # System Details Report
- ---
- - **OS Name:** Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
- - **OS Build:**(null)
- - **OS Type:** 64 бита
- - **GNOME Version:** 46
- - **Windowing System:**X11
- - **Kernel Version:** Linux 6.8.0-31-generic
+ - Log into a GNOME session with the tiling extension enabled (a default
Ubuntu session for example)
+ - Maximize any application
+ - Click in the empty space of the top panel
+
+ -> nothing should happen
+ (before the fix it would move the application and display an orange overlay)
+
+ * Regression potential
+
+ The patch is the event handlers from the tiling extension. The impact
+ could be that tiling actions would trigger when they should not (as
+ before) or not trigger when they should. Watch for any unexpected tiling
+ behaviour and test the difference mouse and keyboard combination of
+ tiling actions.

[Bug 2071453] Re: Create autopkgtests that test the daemon functionality

2024-07-03 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Indeed, that's likely that this test will not be something Debian wants
to take...

I've pushed to a ppa for testing on the infra (since proxy and other
factors can lead to differences with local testing) and it's failing

https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/results/autopkgtest-oracular-ubuntu-
desktop-testing/oracular/amd64/w/wsdd/20240702_211344_9843c@/log.gz

Unsure why but https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ProposedMigration#autopkgtests
has some debugging tips.

Could you perhaps also look at increasing the debug verbosity in the
log?

[Bug 2068809] Re: changelogs not listed for PPA packages

2024-07-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks, I've uploaded the fix to Oracular.

There is another upload pending already in the Noble queue but the fix makes
sense for a next upload.
Would you perhaps have some time to help with that and make the bug description
SRU compliant (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#SRU_Bug_Template)?

[Bug 1979121] Re: [MIR] webp-pixbuf-loader

2024-07-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
I'm going to close the 22.04 target there, it was an improvement we
wanted to land at the time of the request but the review delayed us and
priorities shifted. Now we have a newer LTS out and enough SRU backlog;
we will prioritize other changes.

[Bug 2052405] Re: Translation error in policykit-1 package

2024-07-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
@Dirk, thanks! I've updated the changelog description to be a bit more
specific and the version used to be newer than the current archive one
and uploaded to the SRU review queue.

Closing for the current serie since the strings were fixed in January in
launchpad and the new translations are part of the Noble release. The
translation is also fixed for Jammy so in case of language pack update
we will not regress over what is in the manual upload

[Bug 2071449] Re: Fixes and improvements for 'new user creation'

2024-06-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
** Description changed:

  * Impact

We aren't using gnome-initial-setup to create users in Ubuntu today,
since our desktop installer is handling the user creation, but that's
wanted feature for oem installation to replace oem-setup which doesn't
  exist in the new installer

There is a specification document with details on the change on

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BORpilOnHZRLQFK5gx2PLe6vzytLtSIARD0m_LtsWPQ/edit

The work has been validated by the Canonical OEM team which tested ppa
candidate builds of the changes before we uploaded

  * Test Case

We added a new section for 'new user mode' to the existing testplan to
  cover that feature

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/GnomeInitialSetup

  * Regression potential

As described, neither Ubuntu nor any of the flavors are using gnome-
initial-setup in 'user creation' mode today, so the regression potential
is limited. Theoretically there could be users with custom setup
triggering that mode today but we also found integration issue with the
way the gnome-initial-user account is set up on Debian/Ubuntu which
makes the mode not work today, which we are also fixing as part of that
  upload.

Things that could go wrong though:
  - the user creation GUI could be triggered when it shouldn't (on an normal
desktop installation where the user is create by the installer)
  - the 'first login' mode could change by side effect of some of the other
changes

We should focus on verifying those, especially that the 'existing user'
  mode is unchanged.
+
+ The patches also add some new translatable strings, the launchpad template
was updated manually already and translator notified
+ https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-translators/2024-June/007922.html
+ Which should allow us to get translations before the langpack refresh of .1

[Bug 2071449] [NEW] Fixes and improvements for 'new user creation'

2024-06-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug reported:

We aren't using gnome-initial-setup to create users in Ubuntu today,
since our desktop installer is handling the user creation, but that's
wanted feature for oem installation to replace oem-setup which doesn't
exist in the new installer

* Test Case

As described, neither Ubuntu nor any of the flavors are using gnome-

[Bug 2071447] [NEW] 46.2 stable update

2024-06-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug reported:

* Impact

The update is a stable GNOME update including bugfixes and translations
updates

https://mirror.accum.se/pub/GNOME/sources/gnome-initial-setup/46/gnome-
initial-setup-46.1.news

Bugs fixed:

- gnome-initial-setup-copy-worker, which runs after Initial Setup has created
the first user on the system, is now ordered before GNOME Keyring, assuming
both Initial Setup and GNOME Keyring have been configured with systemd
support. This avoids a race between gnome-initial-setup-copy-worker copying
the login keyring that was created during Initial Setup, and GNOME Keyring
creating a login keyring if none exists on disk.

- Keyboard navigation now works better on the Wi-Fi page.

Other improvements:

- The CONTRIBUTING file has been updated with more development tips.

Translation updates:

https://mirror.accum.se/pub/GNOME/sources/gnome-initial-setup/46/gnome-
initial-setup-46.2.news

Translation updates

* Test Case

As part of the GNOME MRE the update will be tested by applying the
standard testplan

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/GnomeInitialSetup

* Regression potential

We should focus on testing the features impacted by the fixes, which is
in this case is the keyboard navigation in the wifi page and the initial
keyring creation. Those aren't enabled in the 'first login' workflow
used today though but will be in oem mode which is getting some work in
the same upload.

[Bug 2070025] Re: [MIR] wsdd

2024-06-26 Thread Sebastien Bacher
And updated the autopkgtest section, we have some now and they are
green, https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/w/wsdd

** Description changed:

  [Availability]
The package wsdd is already in Ubuntu universe.
The package wsdd build for the architectures it is designed to work on.
It currently builds and works for architectures: amd64 as a python arch-all
package
  Link to package https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wsdd

  [Rationale]
  - The package wsdd is required in Ubuntu main for enabling win10 shares
discovery in nautilus.
  - The package wsdd will generally be useful for a large part of our user base
  - There is no other/better way to solve this that is already in main or
should go universe->main instead of this.
  - The binary package wssd needs to be in main to achieve shares enumeration
in gvfs/nautilus. We don't plan to install wsdd-server which will stay in
universe.
  - The package wsdd is required in Ubuntu main no later than August 15th due
to Oracular feature freeze.

  [Security]
  - No CVEs/security issues in this software in the past
  - no `suid` or `sgid` binaries
  - no executables in `/sbin` and `/usr/sbin`
  - Package does install an user service which is going to be started by the
corresponding gvfs backend
  - Package does not install services, timers or recurring jobs
  - Packages does not open privileged ports (ports < 1024).
  - Package does not expose any external endpoints
  - Packages does not contain extensions to security-sensitive software

  [Quality assurance - function/usage]
  - The package works well right after install

  [Quality assurance - maintenance]
  - The package is maintained well in Debian/Ubuntu/Upstream and does
only has a wishlist request open in Debian and minor bugs upstream

[Bug 2070025] Re: [MIR] wsdd

2024-06-26 Thread Sebastien Bacher
I've added some details on how nautilus access the feature in the
'Background information' section

[Bug 2070025] Re: [MIR] wsdd

2024-06-21 Thread Sebastien Bacher
@MIRteam, I'm submitting the report while we still have several
identified 'TOFIX' which we are working on addressing because I believe
it will require a security team review and I would like to get it in
their backlog already, feel free to postpone to MIR review side until we
land those fixes if you prefer.

[Bug 2070025] [NEW] [MIR] wsdd

2024-06-21 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug reported:

[Availability]
The package wsdd is already in Ubuntu universe.
The package wsdd build for the architectures it is designed to work on.
It currently builds and works for architectures: amd64 as a python arch-all
package
Link to package https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wsdd

[Rationale]
- The package wsdd is required in Ubuntu main for enabling win10 shares
discovery in nautilus.
- The package wsdd will generally be useful for a large part of our user base
- There is no other/better way to solve this that is already in main or
should go universe->main instead of this.
- The binary package wssd needs to be in main to achieve shares enumeration in
gvfs/nautilus. We don't plan to install wssd-server which will stay in universe.
- The package wsdd is required in Ubuntu main no later than August 15th due to
Oracular feature freeze.

  - Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wsdd/+bug
  - Debian https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=wsdd
  - Upstream's bug tracker, https://github.com/christgau/wsdd/issues
- The package has no important open bugs
- The package does not deal with exotic hardware we cannot support

[Quality assurance - testing]
TOFIX: we need to enable the upstream tests as part of the package build
TODO-A: - The package runs a test suite on build time, if it fails
TODO-A: it makes the build fail, link to build log TBD
TODO-B: - The package does not run a test at build time because TBD

TOFIX: we need to enable some autopkgtests
TODO-A: - The package runs an autopkgtest, and is currently passing on
TODO-A: this TBD list of architectures, link to test logs TBD
TODO-B: - The package does not run an autopkgtest because TBD

TODO-A: - The package does have not failing autopkgtests right now
TODO-B: - The package does have failing autopkgtests tests right now, but since
TODO-B: they always failed they are handled as "ignored failure", this is
TODO-B: ok because TBD

[Quality assurance - packaging]
TOFIX: write a debian/watch for the package
TODO-A: - debian/watch is present and works
TODO-B: - debian/watch is not present, instead it has TBD
TODO-C: - debian/watch is not present because it is a native package

- debian/control has a valid Maintainer definition

- This package only has minor lintian warnings

# lintian --pedantic wsdd_0.8-1_amd64.changes
W: wsdd: groff-message troff::145: error: character '*' is not
allowed as a starting delimiter [usr/share/man/man1/wsdd.1.gz:1]
W: wsdd: groff-message troff::145: error: character '*' is not
allowed as a starting delimiter [usr/share/man/man1/wsdd.1.gz:2]
P: wsdd source: package-uses-old-debhelper-compat-version 11
P: wsdd source: trailing-whitespace [debian/control:55]
P: wsdd source: trailing-whitespace [debian/control:5]
P: wsdd source: trailing-whitespace [debian/rules:31]
P: wsdd source: uses-debhelper-compat-file [debian/compat]

- Lintian overrides are not present

- This package does not rely on obsolete or about to be demoted packages.
- This package has no python2 or GTK2 dependencies

- The package will be installed by default, but does not ask debconf
questions

- Packaging and build is easy,
https://salsa.debian.org/grantma/wsdd/-/blob/master/debian/rules

[UI standards]
- Application is not end-user facing (does not need translation)

[Dependencies]
- No further depends or recommends dependencies that are not yet in main

[Standards compliance]
- This package correctly follows FHS and Debian Policy

[Maintenance/Owner]
- The owning team will be desktop-packages and I have their acknowledgement for
that commitment
- The future owning team is already subscribed to the package

- This does not use static builds
- This does not use vendored code
- This package is not rust based

- The package has been built in the archive more recently than the last
test rebuild

[Background information]
The Package description explains the package well
Upstream Name is wsdd

[Bug 2063970] Re: Enhanced tiling orange shading that indicates what a window will resize to will persist even after I'm done with the adjustment.

2024-06-21 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Status update there, we uploaded a fix to Oracular and Noble (waiting
for review in the queue atm) for bug #2064646 which we believe might
also resolve the problem described on this report. The bug hasn't been
included in the changelog though because we couldn't come with steps to
trigger the problem which would be used for the SRU verification
(outside of clicking on the top panel which is what the other report is
about, it might be that it is the trigger for people on this report as
well and that it is a duplicate?)

[Bug 2069709] Re: Seahorse silently fails to sync PGP keys

2024-06-18 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Do you have some custom config maybe in ~/.gnupg? Does it behave
differently with a new user account on the same machine.

scdaemon is used for smartcard authentification, it shouldn't be needed
in a standard setup

Note that scdaemon is in universe so we would need to get it promoted to
main first if we wanted to add a depends or recommends (which would be
easy enough since it's only a binary, the source it's built from is
gnupg2 which is already in main)

$ rmadison -s oracular scdaemon
 scdaemon | 2.4.4-2ubuntu17 | oracular/universe | amd64, arm64, armhf, i386,
ppc64el, riscv64, s390x
