So guys
Just 2 days ago we managed to push a really big improvment.
now the zeitgeist-daemon running here since 3 days did not exceed 3.4 MB of
memory
however zeitgeist-fts still skyrockets :( I am looking into that now I
think the same fix in sqlite could apply
Cheers

I think it mostly due to Ubuntu One cloud putting too many events into
zeitgeist and the fts module catching up on that... We will be releasing a
zeitgeist version that will ignore indexing specific ubuntu-one events

Yeah we are discussing the issue with Ubuntu1 so we can fix it. Ubuntu1

How much does your zeitgeist-daemon process require?
How big was your DB before you sent it over...

I see more subjects than events which means you deleted some events i guess

Correction. Its Zeitgeist now being able to shut down proeprly due to it
being a singelton and somehow dbus losing the address to it.

OK so I think I know the source of the problem.
Basically when Zeitgeist is running and an app subscribes to be notified of
"events" of specific type, if the app crashes or exits before that Zeitgeist
can not unsubscribe it for a clean shutdown.
I will look into it now...

You can get it from lp:activity-log-manager (trunk)
it works like charm here. Can you test it?
make sure you backup your zeitgeist directory "cp ~/.local/share/zeitgeist
~/.local/share/zeitgeist-backup"
give us feedback on #zeitgeist so we can finish this.

I think the problem is now fixed with
https://bugs.launchpad.net/zeitgeist/+bug/809569
I am not sure... We cant replicate it we need more info...
Does it happen on startup?
When it happens can you still search in the Dash?
Can you open "gnome-system-monitor" and see if zeitgeist is still running?

ok this is a bug
I will look into it
but to fix it try

"rm -r ~/.local/share/zeitgeist/fts.index"

then restart zeitgeist :)
it will take some time (1 minute) to build the new index but then it should
work

I might have a clue what is happening there...
Can you run "zeitgeist-daemon --replace" in a terminal
then do a search in unity-place-files and tell me what the terminal says :)

Re: [Bug 646724] Re: not all files show up in files-place

2011-05-12 Thread Seif Lotfy
It can add a location for you to index but it gets more and more expensive.
Again I touching mean you do something with the file (open/close/modify). I
am working on a hybrid solution as i said. Sadly if you replace Zeitgeist
you also get drawbacks like sorting, constant directory monitoring (very
expensive over time) ans more, less sorting options, slower searching
(sqlite searches are too slow as compared to xapian powered ones).

So the only solution is either to improve the current of find a hybrid. But
replacing with a new solution will break things more...
:(

Re: [Bug 646724] Re: not all files show up in files-place

2011-05-12 Thread Seif Lotfy
BTW just for you info there is no perfect solution right now. Even Tracker
that "crawls your desktop" doesn't find anything that is NOT in the
following folders:
- Desktop
- Documents
- Downloads
- Music
- Public
- Pictures Templates
- Videos

While this sounds good alot of files do not reside there. So currently there
is no perfect solution. I am personally working on a hybrid search extension
that allows you to search Tracker + Zeitgeist results. Problem here is the
speed of the search in Tracker do a technical decision as well as the merge
of search results.

I think removing a functionality because its not working properly is a bad
idea. Because it works for the default and normal users. Anyone who uses the
default Ubuntu apps doesnt have problems finding his stuff since "once you
touch the file" with a standard Ubuntu app it will be covered by Zeitgeist.

Re: [Bug 646724] Re: not all files show up in files-place

2011-05-10 Thread Seif Lotfy
There is a difference between Tracker and Zeitgeist:
Tracker indexes stuff in the XDG directories only per default which means it
will only index stuff in Music, Documents, etc...
It will not cover a Directory "Foo" or anything in it. (it makes optimal for
people with lots of files in the default directories)
Zeitgeist indexes stuff you touch. Which means it does not index stuff you
never interacted with (it makes it optimal for fresh installs). Plus
Zeitgeist allows you to sort through receny, frequency, relevancy and
resemblance to the search string.

I am creating a zeitgeist extension that if Tracker is installed it will ask
Tracker for results and attach them to the zeitgeist results and return them
to the client. We have a working prototype. I am not happy with the solution
but its fast enough...
Stay tuned.

2011-05-06 Thread Seif Lotfy
It is possible for the filesystem to notify Zeitgeist if a change happens.
Sadly it is very costly memory wise (kernel side - inotify). We are looking
into an alternative to use gio. We already did the changes needed on the ZG
side. We still need to solve the issue where we capture events on the
filesystem.

Re: [Bug 738555] Re: zeitgeist-daemon crashed with IOError in _write_to_disk(): [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/home/royg/.local/share/zeitgeist/datasources.pickle'

2011-04-21 Thread Seif Lotfy
OK so a primary solution for this was putting the content of _write_to_disk
in datasource_registery.py in a normal " try - catch " block
My primary fear was that the next extension or zeitgeist would crash trying
to write to the disk. This was not the case and the error was caught.
To explain why the other stuff did not crash is:
1) This was the only extension writing to disk upon unloading
2) The engine does not write to disk upon exit since all events are written
to disk upon entrance.
My primary solution would be to put the _write_to_disk in a normal "try -
catch" block for now...

I found an easier way to replicate the error.
1) Open Terminal (terminal1) and run "zeitgeist-daemon --replace"
2) Open another terminal (terminal2) and do "cd ~/.local/share/" then "mv
zeitgeist zeitgeist-backup"
3) In terminal1 then do "Ctrl+c" to quit Zeitgeist

So this looks to me like a problem not only Zeitgeist is facing but anything
that is running and wants to write to disk upon session end.

2011-04-21 Thread Seif Lotfy
So as Markus said, the crash report comes from the session before.
This implies that the home directory is unmounted or encrypted again before
zeitgeist can write something to it when it receives a SIGHUB or SIGTERM signal.
The solution to this either to not allow the datasource register y to write to
disk upon the occurrence of these signals. This means there could be a dataloss
in the datasource. I will need to further investigate this.
