I am currently not in Ubuntu, but in Fedora. And I am having the alike troubles with Compiz task switcher. Both Application Switcher and Static Application Switcher. Happens every time I switch. Restarting X helps. Laptop ATI video card. Occurred after upgrading Fedora to 26, earlier it was OK. I was having such errors in the past: with some Compiz plugins related to workspace and task switching. About 2-3 years ago on a PC with NVidia card.
