[Bug 398777] [NEW] No sound on computer,HDA Intel STAC92XXanalog

2009-07-13 Thread Shane
Public bug reported:

Hello.I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 3 weeks ago and cant get sound to work on
this computer.I have tried alot of the fixes on this site but none have
worked.Everything is turned up and not muted in volume control. Sound
preferences are all set to ALSA.
I also tried Mint 7 and still the same problem,so I imagine it is a module
problem.
The computer I am using is an HP dv6 Pavilion 1038ca.

I have tried everything that would apply to me on this site and the Ubuntu
forums and nothing so far has worked.
I am quite new to all this,so if there is any more information I can provide
please let me know.
I am not sure how to provide some information,or where to get it from, any help
with this would be appreciated.

Yes I have it,it comes with Mint 7. I have tried that and on output it
shows HDA Intel STAC92XX analog as there and and unmuted, volume turned
up to 100%.Also,I have no system sounds at all. There is no sound what so
ever.It is why I believe there is a problem with the model.I
think.

[Bug 398777] Re: No sound on computer,HDA Intel STAC92XXanalog

2009-07-18 Thread Shane
Okay,I managed to get it going on this laptop with the help of a friend
online,who is experienced in Linux.
So I thought I would let you peoples know.

Once again this is an HP pavilion dv6 1038ca laptop,With the HDA Intel
STAC 92XX analog not working with sound on Mint 7 or Ubuntu 9.04.

We did this to get it working.

First I installed this,from these forums,from another thread,posted by
Mark,helping someone else.

Mark Rijckenberg said on 2009-06-26:
Hi,
In System/Administration/Users and Groups , make sure that your user and the
root user are members of the following groups:
 pulse
 pulse-access
 pulse-rt
Then try this procedure:
1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
2. and add these lines to the end of the file:
# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
3. Then navigate to System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to ALSA
4. reboot and retest sound
5. If sound still does not work, then replace hp-dv5 with one of the following
4 model options:
 STAC92HD71B*
   ref
   dell-m4-1
   dell-m4-2
   dell-m4-3
6. You will have to reboot and retest sound after every model option change to
the alsa-base.conf file
Regards,
Mark )))

I did not have to go further than step 4.

Then we did this

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/05/09/upgrade-alsa-1020-on-
ubuntu-jaunty-904/

After rebooting, system sound worked. On start up I got sound for log in
and after had sound as well.

However,Rhythmbox doesnt seem to work and also a music player from my
local radio station wont either, and we will work on getting those going
and I will report back on here.

I hope this helps with a solution to this problem in getting a fix,as
well as help anyone else with the same problem with the same
laptop(sound card) or other wise.

[Bug 351943] [NEW] ubuntu-xen-server installs, but complains that it needs Python 2.5 in Jaunty

2009-03-30 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Information:
Jaunty Server 9.04 Beta
Arch: i386

When installing the ubuntu-xen-server package, it succeeds without
error, but the moment that I run xm, it complains that it can't find
/usr/bin/python2.5. Immediately after installing Jaunty Server Beta, I
noticed there was an upgrade to python, which I applied, so I'm assuming
something about the python 2.6 upgrade broke this.

Running "sudo aptitude install python2.5" would obviously fix that
problem, but I also noticed that the xen kernel never gets installed

[Bug 381818] Re: Upgrade to byobu 2.6 fails

2009-06-01 Thread shane
I found a workaround by running the following:

sudo dpkg --force-all -r byobu

This kills the package forcibly. Then I ran

sudo aptitude install byobu

to get to the newest version. This appears to fix the issue. I can now
install other packages and it doesn't complain about byobu anymore.

[Bug 304492] [NEW] Local maps can't include server-side maps

2008-12-02 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nis

I have a need to include as server-side map in a local map so that I can
make some local overrides (in this case the home directory). This works
in CentOS 4.7, but not in Ubuntu, so I know it's possible to do with
NIS.

/etc/auto.home
userfolder -rw,soft,intr :/localhome/userfolder
+auto.company_home

This doesn't work. I only get "userfolder" showing up in my /home
folder and none of the 50+ entries that are in the auto.home map on the
NIS server. the "userfolder" entry overrides an entry in the server-
side map, instead pointing the user's home folder to a local folder
rather than an NIS share.

[Bug 190754] Re: Bad multitasking / responsiveness in Hardy

2008-03-12 Thread Shane
Probably of no use to anybody, but this happens to me when playing in
Quod Libet and alt-tabbing, etc.

I'm have an Athlon64 3000+ (1.8GHz), 1GB of RAM and an Nvidia 6800 GS
(512MB).

While I don't know what graphics cards the laptops mentioned here have,
it seems to me that everyone that has listed a graphics card seems to
have an Nvidia card? Could this somehow be a problem with Nvidia's
proprietary graphics drivers? (which of course would make it very
difficult for Ubuntu to fix)

I'm using the Adobe plugin... I don't know what it uses, but there's
something in the back of my head telling me it's ALSA. Personally I
haven't noticed any significant problems with multitasking so far with
Hardy, though I've only been using it for a few days. Sound is
definitely the biggest manifestation of this problem for me, if it is a

I don't know what the behaviour is supposed to be for other document
types, but if RTFs and the like are supposed to be swallowed in an
OpenOffice window (which would be my understanding from the config
file), that doesn't happen. So I don't think this is specific to PDFs.

[Bug 241744] [NEW] No support for "+" entries

2008-06-20 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: adduser

adduser doesn't have any support for "+" entries. Per Debian policy,
programs (in this case the nis.deb) that aren't the primary
responsibility of the config files (in this case /etc/passwd,
/etc/shadow, and /etc/group), are to be offered a program that modifies
these entries. Adduser does these modifications, however, it doesn't
support the "+" entries for NIS users.

For the Debian how-to of NIS, see
http://lyre.mit.edu/~powell/debian-howto/nis.html
For the pertinent Debian Policy, see
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html#s10.7.4

The desired effect would be that one can use adduser to create an entry
such as the following:

/etc/passwd
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
+goodguy:/home/goodguy:
-badguy::
+test::/usr/bin/zsh

Currently, the adduser and useradd programs will fail stating that the
username has bad characters in it and will even suggest that the
preceeding "-" in name is a bad thing, even though it's required when
running NIS w/ compat.

[Bug 297378] [NEW] "+"-included entries in auto.home

2008-11-12 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: autofs

I have the following configuration that works on a CentOS 4 machine, but
not in Ubuntu.

Inside the file /etc/auto.master:
/home file:/etc/auto.home --ghost

Inside the file /etc/auto.home:
localuser -rw,soft,intr :/home.local:&
+auto.company_home

The "auto.company_home" share in NIS:

localhost -rw,soft,intr server:/home.local:&

The purpose is to have the localuser's home folder get overridden on
just ONE machine and work with the defaults on all the other machines.
This configuration works in CentOS:

CentOS automount version 4.1.3-234
Ubuntu automount version 4.1.4

The configurations are identical. I've read that + entries work in the
auto.master, but do they not work in other files? The result of the
above configuration will show the local /etc/auto.home entries, but all
the NIS auto.company_home entries are absent.

2008-07-27 Thread Shane
I don't know what the behaviour is supposed to be for other document
types, but if RTFs and the like are supposed to be swallowed in an
OpenOffice window (which would be my understanding from the config
file), that doesn't happen. So I don't think this is specific to PDFs.

[Bug 297378] [NEW] "+"-included entries in auto.home

2008-11-12 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: autofs

I have the following configuration that works on a CentOS 4 machine, but
not in Ubuntu.

Inside the file /etc/auto.master:
/home file:/etc/auto.home --ghost

Inside the file /etc/auto.home:
localuser -rw,soft,intr :/home.local:&
+auto.company_home

The "auto.company_home" share in NIS:

localhost -rw,soft,intr server:/home.local:&

The purpose is to have the localuser's home folder get overridden on
just ONE machine and work with the defaults on all the other machines.
This configuration works in CentOS:

CentOS automount version 4.1.3-234
Ubuntu automount version 4.1.4

The configurations are identical. I've read that + entries work in the
auto.master, but do they not work in other files? The result of the
above configuration will show the local /etc/auto.home entries, but all
the NIS auto.company_home entries are absent.

[Bug 291111] [NEW] pssh (parallel-scp) invalid argument

2008-10-30 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pssh

Whenever running parallel-scp, it looks like it always yields an

[2] 08:31:57 [FAILURE] host2 (22, 'Invalid argument')

I've been able to get parallel-ssh to work. It looks like it could be

[Bug 241744] [NEW] No support for "+" entries

2008-06-20 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: adduser

adduser doesn't have any support for "+" entries. Per Debian policy,
programs (in this case the nis.deb) that aren't the primary
responsibility of the config files (in this case /etc/passwd,
/etc/shadow, and /etc/group), are to be offered a program that modifies
these entries. Adduser does these modifications, however, it doesn't
support the "+" entries for NIS users.

For the Debian how-to of NIS, see
http://lyre.mit.edu/~powell/debian-howto/nis.html
For the pertinent Debian Policy, see
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html#s10.7.4

The desired effect would be that one can use adduser to create an entry
such as the following:

/etc/passwd
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
+goodguy:/home/goodguy:
-badguy::
+test::/usr/bin/zsh

Currently, the adduser and useradd programs will fail stating that the
username has bad characters in it and will even suggest that the
preceeding "-" in name is a bad thing, even though it's required when
running NIS w/ compat.

Okay, this procedure also works with Ubuntu 9.04 as well.I just finished
installing it and followed those procedures, and I have system sounds.

[Bug 351943] [NEW] ubuntu-xen-server installs, but complains that it needs Python 2.5 in Jaunty

2009-03-30 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Information:
Jaunty Server 9.04 Beta
Arch: i386

When installing the ubuntu-xen-server package, it succeeds without
error, but the moment that I run xm, it complains that it can't find
/usr/bin/python2.5. Immediately after installing Jaunty Server Beta, I
noticed there was an upgrade to python, which I applied, so I'm assuming
something about the python 2.6 upgrade broke this.

[Bug 351943] Re: ubuntu-xen-server installs, but complains that it needs Python 2.5 in Jaunty

Running "sudo aptitude install python2.5" would obviously fix that
problem, but I also noticed that the xen kernel never gets installed
either. Just seems like the default dependencies are a little messed up
in Jaunty Server Beta.
