[Bug 885027] Re: SUID Mount Helper has 5 Major Vulnerabilities

2011-11-05 Thread Siddartha
I am quite surprised how long this thread has gotten.

I side with Kovid. I admire him for doing this app. Because ever since
Red Hat 7 or 8 I keep reading on the open source (not free software!)
forums something along the lines of „if you need it — go build it, now
p*** off as we're doing something cool”. He has gotten up and wrote this
which is quite unique at the moment. Also he bothers to keep it updated
quite often while most of the open source projects (including corporate
backed Open Office for example) stagnate.

I also admire him for not playing the racism card. From what I gather
most of you come from the so–called western world, and in my life of
working for outsourced companies I've seen quite a few orientals
supporting their lack of education, language and coding skills with
this. This is the best he can do. If you can do better, please help him
patch it.

I do agree that he has an „interface” problem, which is more than
obvious in his forum postings on mobileread. To my shame I admit I do
not know much more than tasted a few curry dishes about his culture.
Just try to put yourself in his shoes. Maybe what comes up after a
translation as rude, harsh or plain stupid may just be sound normal to
him. And attacking him just because of a misunderstanding can just make
things worse.

Maybe posting an „unsafe app” label might help. Most probably just
diasabling some functions would make more people mad than those who
would be happy. Myself I'm sure I'd be split between the two. Also,
maybe reading closer the software licence as of „no liability
whatsoever” would make people more aware. Maybe just by signing Kovid
Goyal should be enough of a warning. He could have posted as Jon Johnson
just as well.

That was a 9.10 distro updating to 10.4. And so far damaged beyond
repair. And some call this a stable distro - almost a year later it's
unusable.

[Bug 336094] Re: ssa/ass subtitles are read, but shown in the console and not in the main window

2010-02-26 Thread Siddartha
JB, glad I could help. I'm happy that your project is moving forward. As
for anybody's private use I'd say SMplayer is quite a better choice. It
is a build up on the mplayer base from which most video player projects
have taken. It does not have this subtitle issue. Also, to balance on
the less bugs side it has quite a few extra features like remembering
where the movie was stopped and resume from that point forward. It works
both on Windows and Linux. And it hasn't even reached version 1. So
probably the VLC team has rushed things just to label it stable. But
that's their call. I wish that by version 2 VLC will have this playback
issues solved and could really push some features of its own. See you in
a few years!

[Bug 457737] Re: USB Startup Disk Creator does nothing when trying to format a disk

2009-11-27 Thread Siddartha
My stick had no partition table. It was preformatted and all used in
FAT32 (4Gb). Had to create a partition table and a primary partition in
order to use it. I see it is confirmed, but because this broken app is
published on all blogs and even on the Ubuntu documentation pages THIS
should be marked as critical.

I'm pretty happy with Gnome-mplayer which does not have any of these
issues.. So I don't think I'll bother to install it to find some other
issues. Anyway, I'd recommend you do switch to plain mplayer unless you
have a need for complex playlists - it sure is faster.

Thank you for reporting this to
Ubuntu.  Could you please try the latest version of
Firefox 3.0?  Also, could you please try with a new
profile?  You seem to have a lot of extensions and they
could be conflicting with each other.  You do not need
to delete your old profile to test..  In fact, if that
is the problem, maybe you can help us figure out which
 extensions are conflicting.

[Bug 285598] Re: Please rebuild mkvtoolnix (was Doesn't recognize subtitles)

2009-02-28 Thread Siddartha
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6816656postcount=4

Problem solved with going up to 2.5.2 which was published in the last 24
hours. As 2.5.1 has a big problem with setting the locales go straight
for the current one.

Also, if it is possible to bump the development version from 2.4 to 2.5
or the future distribution will have again a terribly old version.

[Bug 285598] Re: Please rebuild mkvtoolnix (was Doesn't recognize subtitles)

2009-02-28 Thread Siddartha
The bug report is wrongly stated.

There is NOT a problem with ALL subtitles. If you bother to read the
matroska documentation or just the error message given by mkvtoolnix you
find out that only vosub, srt and ssa/ass are supported right now. Never
tried with vosub at this version (never will as I just went up to the
latest version). But ssa/ass are accepted. Only srt is not recognised
in this 2.0.2 version. The problem with ssa/ass is that the players I
have tested (vlc, mplayer, gmplayer, totem) seem unable to show them.

Checked also with gmplayer, mplayer and totem on the same system. Vlc is
the only one who has a problem recomposing the image with a good

problem so it is something related to how matroska files are handled.

[Bug 304014] [NEW] Removing gcc renders dkms unusable yet it raises no warning in Synaptic

2008-12-01 Thread Siddartha
Public bug reported:

This was the cause of much grief recently as removing gcc (the reasoning
was quite sound, this is not a development station and only binary
packages are installed) lead to no warning and it meant dkms was of no
use. Doubled with a lack of signaling from the jockey package which
failed without a warning or error message that meant making the computer
unusable but in low-res mode.

[Bug 304034] [NEW] DKMS should give a reason at boot for failing

2008-12-01 Thread Siddartha
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dkms

If everything goes ok a simple [OK] should be enough. But, if anything
goes wrong like being unable to compile the result is just [failed] and
nothing more. There should be a more verbose output I think.

Re: [Bug 84622] Re: k3b is unable to burn DVDs on an external drive

2007-02-15 Thread Siddartha
Yes, but I have no idea how to locate the problem or
how to do anything debug-like.

Also, sorry for answering you via email but I don't
know how to use the launchpad interface.

Re: [Bug 84622] Re: k3b is unable to burn DVDs on an external drive

2007-02-15 Thread Siddartha
Yes, I can read already burnt images. It's the only
optical drive I have at the moment. But the error is
shockingly stupid - k3b is detecting a DVD-R (empty)
and asks for an empty DVD+/-R(W).

Can you access the drive putting in a cd or dvd in

[Bug 84622] k3b is unable to burn DVDs on an external drive

2007-02-11 Thread Siddartha
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: k3b

I have an ASUS DRW-1608P2S external DVD writer. I use the USB2
connection. The app tells me to insert an empty DVD while on the line
above it tells me IT IS an empty DVD inside. There is no type mismatch
as it can write both DVD-R and DVD+R.
