[Bug 375905] Re: Mouse focus gets stuck over control objects

It's not obvious to me why this was also filed against logitech-applet,
and since it seems to be unrelated, I'm marking the logitech-applet part
as invalid.

[Bug 24692] Re: Amd64 ubuntu build hogs memory due to libs built with excessive alignment requirement

2010-09-19 Thread Simon Ruggier
Usage of virtual address space is not the same as usage of physical
pages. A process using up 100+ MB of virtual memory isn't actually a
problem. For comparison, on my machine, a bit of mental arithmetic shows
that the top few processes shown by System Monitor have over 8 GB of
memory mapped, whereas the real usage is around 1.4GB.

If you are trying to measure the physical memory usage of processes, you
should use the "Resident Memory" column instead, as far as I can tell.

I think they should both be in there, so people can choose for

seen any video websites that don't work with the 64-bit plugin, and no
matter what package is in the repositories, you're not being forced to

So does that mean the bug is grandfathered in because it got here
first? In this case, alpha is just a label, and the 64-bit flash
player is much more stable than running 32-bit flash under
nspluginwrapper, according to many users who have commented on this
thread. There doesn't seem to be any reason to keep the 32-bit flash
plugin under nspluginwrapper that makes up for its brokenness.

This is true, but it's a very acceptable workaround. If you have no

[Bug 277203] Re: gnome-sound-properties setting to disable login sound not honored

2009-11-12 Thread Simon Ruggier
Sorry to waste your time, but that's a different issue. Ubuntu has
played that drum sound at the gdm prompt since at least 5.10,
independent of the sound settings. I don't know how to disable it,
because it's the only startup sound that didn't bother me (It's very
short and sort of unintrusive, in my opinion). This bug is about the
login sound that plays after you enter your credentials, which to me is
like a tacky remix of the oldschool Mac startup sound (apologies to
whoever made it, but really).

Re: [Bug 192270] Re: npviewer.bin crashed with SIGSEGV in pthread_mutex_lock()

2009-09-27 Thread Simon Ruggier
The 64-bit version of flash is stable, and it appears to be getting
released alongside updates to the 32-bit versions, so I really don't
see why Ubuntu still insists on provides 64-bit Ubuntu users with the
32-bit plugin and nspluginwrapper, which has been broken for at least
the last 3 releases of Ubuntu. It would be pretty ridiculous if this
bug were still in Karmic, and it's this sort of minor but conspicuous
snag that stigmatises 64-bit operating systems for desktop users.

[Bug 122047] Re: No way to view explicity installed packages, excluding automatically installed packages

2009-09-06 Thread Simon Ruggier
a7x, you may be either happy or dismayed to know that you can obtain a
nearly identical (and more accurate, for reasons that I didn't feel like
investigating) result using:

aptitude --disable-columns -F 'can_be_marked_as_auto %p' search '~i!~M~R(~i)'
aptitude --disable-columns -F 'no_dependents %p' search '~i!~M!~R(~i)'

You can refer to
http://algebraicthunk.net/~dburrows/projects/aptitude/doc/en/ch02s03s05.html
for the meanings of the search string - ~R(~i) matches packages whose
reverse depends are installed on the system.

However, it's better to use:

aptitude --disable-columns -F 'can_be_marked_as_auto %p' search '~i!~M
(~R(~i)|~Rrecommends:(~i))'
aptitude --disable-columns -F 'no_dependents %p' search '~i!~M
!(~R(~i)|~Rrecommends:(~i))'

The above includes recommends as well as depends, which is how aptitude
calculates which packages to remove anyway.

A tabular list of all manually installed packages can be obtained using:
aptitude search '~i!~M'

[Bug 367460] Re: no way to configure KDE 4 look and feel from GNOME?

2009-04-26 Thread Simon Ruggier
Sorry, I disagree that this should be a question, because there is an
actual problem here.

As a GNOME user, when I install a KDE 4 application, the recommends
should pull in a utility that is capable of changing the look and feel
settings. Even in the absence of this, installing systemsettings should
be enough to be able to change these settings, I can't see any way of
changing the look and feel in systemsettings. In KDE 3, installing
kcontrol was enough to allow the user to change these things, so there
is a definite regression here.

If the systemsettings modules that control look and feel are in some
other packages, I think that at the very least those packages should be
added to the recommends of systemsettings, but if possible, they should
be added to the recommends or suggests of kdelibs5 so that users can
change settings that are relevant to KDE applications running in any
desktop environment. If this causes too many packages to be pulled in,
then maybe the packages should be split differently.

[Bug 367460] [NEW] no way to configure KDE 4 look and feel from GNOME?

2009-04-26 Thread Simon Ruggier
Public bug reported:

Having the systemsettings package installed, I can't find a way to
change font properties, or the look and feel of KDE 4 applications.
Probably if I installed the right package, the UI for these settings
would show up in systemsettings, but is this right? Because the settings
apply to KDE 4 applications running in a different desktop environment,
it seems like it would be better if they came with the systemsettings
package.

the package maintainer doesn't support. I don't think it was ever a good
idea to install plugins disabled by default, but it's also not a good
idea to do something that will break in some situations.

[Bug 351318] Re: Amarok 2 collection mixes up metadata

If I move ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok/mysqle out of the way, then amarok
rescans all of my collection folders. The metadata ends up fine, but the
rescan happens during startup!

[Bug 290099] Re: unknown hang breaks all authentication, happens intermittently

2009-04-11 Thread Simon Ruggier
I'm inclined to agree with you about it being a kernel problem, which is
why I blacklisted my wireless driver in the first place. I would have
checked dmesg by now, except that my first reaction to the problem was
always to reboot, and it never occurred to me to check my logs after the
fact. Fortunately, they go pretty far back: I've attached a log of an
entire boot that I'm pretty sure included this bug, there's no other
reason I would have rebooted the machine on a Monday morning. There
doesn't seem to be anything in there that clearly reveals the cause, but
there is some suspicious stuff at the end that may be of use to someone
familiar with the corresponding source code.

[Bug 290099] Re: unknown hang breaks all authentication, happens intermittently

2009-04-08 Thread Simon Ruggier
No, I use ethernet for my networking. The problem started happening
again recently (with iwlagn still blacklisted), and I couldn't stand
having to use the sysrq key to reboot every time I wanted to use my
computer after a long period of inactivity, so I upgraded to Jaunty in
the hope that it would go away (thankfully, I haven't seen it again so
far, though I miss Amarok 1, and JuK/Phonon seem to have reliability
issues).

One other notable thing was that if I switched into a VT and hit
Ctrl+Alt+Del when auth wasn't working, the shutdown process would hang
on whatever daemon was first to be stopped (or something similar, I
don't remember). On the other hand, if I used Alt+SysRq+e and then hit
Ctrl+Alt+Del (whether it's the first or second time hitting it),
shutdown would proceed properly. I think at one point I also found that
after hitting Alt+SysRq+e, I was able to log in properly, but this isn't
a useful workaround, since the system is presumably not in a good state
after sending a TERM signal to every process.

I'll attach an archive with the three files you requested (from a backup
that was taken before I upgraded), but you'll probably find that they're
untouched, because I don't know anything about PAM.

[Bug 351319] [NEW] Bug 188444 – playback is unreliable and broken in Amarok and JuK using phonon g streamer backend

2009-03-29 Thread Simon Ruggier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: phonon-backend-gstreamer

When running Amarok or JuK with only the gstreamer backend of phonon installed,
I get a popup (shown in the attached screenshot) at startup, and playback only
sometimes works. When playback fails, there are no errors printed to stdout,
and no indication of what could be wrong in the UI. Amarok sometimes displays a
box saying that there have been too many errors and that it is stopping
playback, while JuK seems to do nothing. Both cases are confusing for the user.

With the Xine backend installed, I've had no similar problems so far.

Also note that in systemsettings, the test button works, and yet these sound
problems occur nevertheless.

[Bug 351318] [NEW] Amarok 2 collection mixes up metadata

2009-03-29 Thread Simon Ruggier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amarok

See the upstream bug:

Having upgraded from a standard Amarok 1 installation using an sqlite database,
my collection and playlist completely mix up the metadata for songs. The title
is displayed correctly, but everything else seems to be grabbed arbitrarily
from other items in the collection. A screenshot of the metadata editing dialog
summarizes the problem by showing both the filename and the metadata, which
clearly do not match the filename.

I don't know if it's intentional, but your email has an obnoxious tone
to it, and you provide no reason why you think this is somehow Nvidia
specific. Nevertheless, this problem is either with nspluginwrapper,
or Adobe Flash. If it has any relation to video drivers (which it may
not), then it's not specific to Nvidia, seeing as how I have ATI
hardware and still experience it.

Also, to various other people, please avoid commenting that you too
are affected by the bug, it wastes all subscribers' time, and doesn't
help the bug get solved. It is already abundantly clear this bug
affects many people, and there's a link at the top you can click on if
you really must express that it affects you too.

Have there been any updates in Intrepid that would fix this? It's a pain

Obviously it's not a fix for any bug in nspluginwrapper, but since the
bug thread contained discussion about the 64-bit alpha, I posted a
link here. I assumed that the Jaunty version[1] used the 32-bit flash
plugin still, because the version remained the same. I would think it
makes more sense to have two packages with their own versions, to
avoid versioning confusion. Users interested in 64-bit flash should
get it from Jaunty, to ensure that their flashplugin-nonfree package
will be updated when they upgrade to jaunty.

[Bug 302716] Re: assertion fails in evince when using drag select to scroll upward

2008-12-17 Thread Simon Ruggier
I forgot to respond to your request for the PDF. This issue is
independent of what PDF file I open, I've reproduced it with three
different ones. However, I tried 0.pdf from Bug 158065, comment 1, and I
was able to record a backtrace. I tried to also generate a core file in
gdb at the same time as acquiring a backtrace, but it seemed to be
useless, so I'm only attaching the backtrace.

[Bug 290099] Re: unknown hang breaks all authentication, happens intermittently

2008-12-07 Thread Simon Ruggier
A week ago, this problem started happening often, requiring me to reboot
my system once or twice a day at a minimum, for a few days straight. In
response to this, I tried blacklisting the iwlagn module, under the
assumption that this is a hardware/driver related problem, and that the
most suspect drivers in my experience are the wireless and graphics
drivers. Since blacklisting iwlagn, I haven't seen this problem at all,
and my current uptime is over 5 days.

[Bug 290099] Re: unknown hang breaks all authentication, happens intermittently

2008-11-29 Thread Simon Ruggier
** Description changed:

This has been happening since at least as long ago as 8.04. I would try
to unlock my screensaver after a long time away from my computer and
find that it hangs within the authentication stage. At times, a console
login would work, after a long delay of 1-2 minutes, allowing me to see
what was in my session before rebooting. I recently upgraded to
Intrepid, and I'm now noticing that the problem is still here.

Just now, it happened while I was actually using the machine, rather
than during a long period of absence. I had opened Synaptic 20 minutes
before, and I tried to open it again, but nothing came up. I then opened
up a terminal, ran sudo -l, and entered my password, opened another
terminal, ran su, and entered gibberish, since there is no root password
on this system. That was at least 15 minutes ago, and both commands are
still hung up in authentication. I eventually tried synaptic again and
found that now that the sudo timeout has expired, a gksu dialog popped
up, but upon entering my password there, it disappeared and that gksu
  froze as well.

- I'm not sure what to do to diagnose this, but I don't want to be stuck
- with this problem for another 6 months.
+ Perhaps this is a problem with PAM, but I'm not sure what to do to

There are no evince related crash files there. Before filing the bug, I

reproducible for me when running evince directly. I think that a source
file, line number, condition, and valid instructions for reproduction
are sufficient information for this bug to be useful to developers.

[Bug 299746] [NEW] iwlagn: kernel bug floods log files

2008-11-18 Thread Simon Ruggier
Public bug reported:

I'm using the iwlagn module from linux-backports-
modules-2.6.27-7-generic. Twice now, I've found that while unattended,
my system has filled its rootfs by flooding /var/log/messages,
/var/log/kern.log, and /var/log/syslog with messages from the kernel.
The logs themselves are hard to decipher, because the information
written to the log file was written at a slower rate than the rate that
the kernel was spewing information at, but one can see iwlagn mentioned
in the call stack. I've attached part of the kern.log from the second
occurrence, to illustrate this.

[Bug 288322] [NEW] NetworkManager should support aliased interfaces

2008-10-23 Thread Simon Ruggier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I like for my laptop to have a static IP address when connected to certain
networks, which happen to be connected via ethernet interface, so I have the
following snippet in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf:
alias {
  interface "eth0";
  fixed-address 192.168.1.150;
  #option subnet-mask 255.255.255.255;
}

I've had to avoid using NetworkManager in order for this functionality
to work, because it doesn't have any support for slave interfaces. This
has caused problems of its own, and means that my ethernet interface
doesn't bring itself up automatically.

Ideally, I'd be able to configure a fixed IP address that works with
NetworkManager, and not have to deal with getting
/etc/network/interfaces and NetworkManager to coexist.

I like to declare my ethernet interface in /etc/network/interfaces, because
DHCP aliases in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf are ignored when NetworkManager brings
up my ethernet. However, I just noticed (under Intrepid as of 2008-10-23) that
when booting without an ethernet cable plugged in, the machine hangs
indefinitely at the point where "configuring network interfaces" is shown.
After commenting out the following:
# iface eth0 inet dhcp
# auto eth0
in the interfaces file, the system boots up properly.

Also, whether or not a cable is plugged in, nm-applet was not showing up
in the notification area while the above two lines were in my interfaces
file.

[Bug 92354] Re: Mouse hangs in lower-right corner

2008-08-08 Thread Simon Ruggier
I'm seeing this bug on two different boxes running Hardy i386 and amd64,
using both qemu and kvm. The only thing that works properly is to add
-usb -usbdevice tablet and use that device instead, which works fine for
windows, but not so fine in Ubuntu 6.06, for example, where it doesn't
work by default, the evtouch driver isn't present, and the evdev driver
doesn't work properly (though there is a patch at [1] that partially
helps). The problem wasn't present in Gutsy.

[Bug 239819] Re: libqt4-dev includes empty Doxygen tagfile

2008-06-24 Thread Simon Ruggier
I've determined the following:
-doxytags cannot parse the documentation from this version of Qt, this is a bug
in doxygen, I guess
-running make adp_docs in the Qt source directory regenerates the html docs,
(I'm assuming), and in the process, qdoc3 tries to generate its own doxygen tag
file at doc/indexes/qt.tags. This is configured in one of either
tools/qdoc3/test/qt-build-docs.qdocconf or tools/qdoc3/test/qt.qdocconf - I
think it's the first one, but I'm not sure
-if doc/indexes doesn't exist, creation of the tagfile quietly fails

Perhaps a bug should be filed upstream then, since it seems like they
intended to ship a tag file with the tarball. In the meantime, it is
possible to rebuild the documentation, including the tagfile, during the
package build process.

[Bug 212492] [NEW] cell/mobile phone has to be added as an input device to be used as a Bluetooth remote control

2008-04-05 Thread Simon Ruggier
Public bug reported:

I've managed to get my cellular phone (a Sony-Ericsson z520) working as a
remote input device, but in order to get it working, I had to:
Open Bluetooth preferences
Select the service tab
Select the input service
Click the add button under the list of input devices
Click on the "show all devices checkbox"
Select my phone to be added

Once this is done, I can successfully initiate a remote control session
from the phone's UI. If I remove my phone from the list of input
devices, then attempt to initiate a session, the phone says it is
connecting, then that it's "connecting remote control", and then it
fails there. It would be better if this worked without needing to add
the phone to a list of input devices before making an attempt.

The root of this issue (if I'm not mistaken) is that when the hotkeys
are used to adjust the brightness, the adjustment doesn't get saved to
gconf. If that gets fixed, this problem will go away.

I don't see any such problem on my end. Make sure that in smb.conf
you have "writable = yes" or "read only = no" (you can set this with
the Shared Folders utility in GNOME), and that other users have
Unix-style permissions to write to the shared folder (you can set this
in nautilus by selecting "Properties" in the right click menu, if you
don't use chmod)

This question remains: is putting "map to guest = Bad User" into the
[global] section of the default smb.conf an acceptable solution to
this bug? If there is a problem, it should be discussed in this bug,
and if there is no problem, it's a quick fix, and the bug should be
fixed by now.

I'm not sure it's in icedtea-java7, perhaps it would make sense for

Perhaps this is not specific to java packages either, perhaps it is a

[Bug 32067] Re: the security parameter must be set to share, not user, in smb.conf - Smb/Gnome sharing broken

2008-02-04 Thread Simon Ruggier
** Description changed:

- In /etc/samba/smb.conf,
+ For a given share created in the GNOME GUI, the resulting stanza in
+ smb.conf looks like the following:

- we should set
- ;security = user
+ [foo]
+ path = /home/bar/baz/foo
+ available = yes
+ browsable = yes
+ public = yes
+ writable = no

- to
- security = share
+ The expected result of such a stanza is a passwardless public share,
+ whether it was created in the GUI or manually added to smb.conf. It
+ already works properly like that when accessed from Nautilus, but when a
+ Windows XP client accesses the share, a username/password prompt
+ appears.

-
- So samba isn't such a PITA for a normal user. The reason I am reporting this
is because if you don't do that, setting up shares with gnome (right click
folder, "share folder") will not work properly. The windows computer will not
be able to reach the said folder.
+ Adding "map to guest = Bad User" to smb.conf (as mentioned in the
+ comments) allows Windows XP clients to access these public shares
+ without being prompted, without breaking the security model for
+ nonpublic shares.

As far as I can tell, it's not insecure, it's just a voluntary choice
by the user to not require any credentials from people accessing the
share, which what many users expect (this is also why this discussion
has heated up). Security is a completely moot topic here if the
problem is that shares can be accessed by Ubuntu machines, but not
Windows XP ones.

[Bug 123185] Re: qemu completely broken with current version of bochbios

2007-11-28 Thread Simon Ruggier
** Summary changed:

- bochsbios too old for Windows XP with qemu
+ qemu completely broken with current version of bochbios

** Description changed:

Qemu in Debian and Ubuntu are built to use BIOS images from the
bochsbios package instead of the builtin ones. Unfortunately, the
bochsbios images currently shipped with gutsy do not work with a Windows
- XP guest in qemu on the amd64 architecture. The current Debian/testing
- or Debian/unstable packages ship with a more recent BIOS and work fine.
- So all that's needed to fix this bug is a new merge from Debian.
+ XP guest in qemu. A comment below states that they do not work with
+ certain Linux distributions either. The current Debian/testing or
+ Debian/unstable packages ship with a more recent BIOS and work fine. So
+ all that's needed to fix this bug is a backport from the development
+ version of Ubuntu.

with Damn Small Linux (from the CD ISO) and it works flawlessly.

switch to the qemu's console.

and running.. and found it works (with the same XP image).

Re: [Bug 155641] Re: java related /etc/alternatives files broken after upgrading to gutsy

2007-11-23 Thread Simon Ruggier
Your comment is a different problem, and thus belongs in a new bug.
If you don't start a new bug, it's not possible for developers to
track the problems separately.

[Bug 53299] Re: RFP: Extreme Tux Racer

2007-11-05 Thread Simon Ruggier
** Summary changed:

- ppracer is too out of date
+ RFP: Extreme Tux Racer

** Description changed:

+ Extreme Tux Racer is a continuation of Planet Penguin Racer, which seems
+ to be dead. The homepage is at http://www.extremetuxracer.com/, and
+ upstream already provides usable Debian packages.
+
+ Apparently this bug is being treated as a request for packaging of
+ Extreme Tux Racer, so this is a revised description. Original
+ description below:
+
I've tried the 'alpha' version from
http://projects.planetpenguin.de/racer/, and in my opinion it is better
to ship that than 0.3.1, which is getting very stale.

Some reasons to ship the newer one:
-0.3.1 won't let you bind non alphanumeric keys, 0.5 does
-0.3.1 has a bug that has been fixed, where hitting enter allows the user to
enter any race, even if they shouldn't be allowed.
-0.5 has more flexibility in the options menus
-despite being labeled an alpha release, I've had no problems with 0.5
