[Bug 1641671] Re: "ttf-mscorefonts-installer: processing..." email message repeatedly from /etc/cron.daily/update-notifier-common
Am also experiencing this from about 30 Ubuntu 16.04 machines in our office. We get very regular e-mails that the flash plugin was updated, and there's no "normal" way to silence them. As a workaround, we change /etc/cron.daily/update-notifier-common to send its output to `/dev/null`, but this will be rolled back with an change of update- notifier. I think that the last patch, posted by Roman Odaisky, will fix part of the issue. However, for the Flash player, at some point, `apt` is called which also produces output that is e-mailed in cron. It might be best to just change the cronjob to redirect its output (perhaps also stderr) to some log file. ** Summary changed: - "ttf-mscorefonts-installer: processing..." email message repeatedly from /etc/cron.daily/update-notifier-common + Cronjob /etc/cron.daily/update-notifier-common sends too many e-mail messages -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1641671 Title: Cronjob /etc/cron.daily/update-notifier-common sends too many e-mail messages To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/1641671/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: DCMTK 3.6.1 has an option to use libiconv to support character conversion. [Bug 1696415] Re: NetworkManager does not update IPv4 address lifetime even though DHCP lease was successfully renewed
I've closed down on the root cause being the /usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm- dhcp-helper tool. Occasionally, this binary runs, but fails to correctly send the update to NetworkManager. No errors occur when this happens; NetworkManager in debug mode just says "accepted connection on private socket" then "closed connection on private socket" without any updates happening. I've managed to work around the issue by wrapping /usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-dhcp-helper in a shell script that simply performs the same lease update until the logs indicate that NetworkManager received it. This doesn't fix the communication problem, but adds a safety net that prevents the resulting issues. It's been tested in an office network of some 12 PCs. If anyone runs into this issue as well, run the following script to work around it: -8<- #!/bin/bash HELPERSCRIPT="/usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-dhcp-helper" HELPERBIN="/usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-dhcp-helper.bin" function is_elf() { readelf -h "$1" >/dev/null 2>&1 if [ "$?" = "1" ]; then echo "0" else echo "1" fi } if [ "$(is_elf $HELPERSCRIPT)" = "1" ]; then mv "$HELPERSCRIPT" "$HELPERBIN" fi cat <"$HELPERSCRIPT" #!/usr/bin/perl use strict; use warnings; if(\$< != 0) { die "Must run as root\n"; } my \$reason = \$ENV{reason} || ""; if(\$reason eq "PREINIT") { # not lease information, so waiting for the journal will make # nm-dhcp-helper wait for too long, just send it once and exit so # dhclient will start to get a lease system("${HELPERBIN}"); exit(0); } my \$attempts = 0; my \$success = 0; while(\$attempts < 10) { \$attempts++; my \$time = time(); sleep(1); system("${HELPERBIN}"); sleep(1); my \$leasetime = \`/bin/journalctl --since='\\@\$time' | grep NetworkManager | grep ' lease time ' | wc -l\`; if(\$leasetime == 1) { \$success = 1; last; } # Try again in 5 seconds sleep(5); } if(\$attempts > 1) { open my \$fh, ">>", "/tmp/nm-helper-retries.log" or die \$!; my \$date = \`/bin/date\`; 1 while chomp \$date; if(\$success) { print \$fh "\$date: needed \$attempts attempts to update NetworkManager (\$reason).\n"; } else { print \$fh "\$date: gave up after \$attempts attempts (\$reason).\n"; } close \$fh; } exit(0); EOF chmod +x $HELPERSCRIPT /usr/sbin/aa-complain /etc/apparmor.d/sbin.dhclient -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1696415 Title: NetworkManager does not update IPv4 address lifetime even though DHCP lease was successfully renewed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1696415/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

By setting log_level to DEBUG, I could confirm from the logs that there is a miscommunication between dhclient and NetworkManager causing this issue. It looks like it is not NetworkManager that removes the IPv4 address from the interface; the address is removed from the interface automatically by the kernel because its lifetime expired: jun 13 19:26:21 cuba NetworkManager[28642]: [1497374781.0763] platform: address: adding or updating IPv4 address: 192.168.0.55/24 lft 7200sec pref 7200sec lifetime 99735-0[7200,7200] dev 3 src unknown jun 13 19:26:21 cuba NetworkManager[28642]: [1497374781.0763] platform: signal: address 4 changed: 192.168.0.55/24 lft 7200sec pref 7200sec lifetime 99735-99735[7200,7200] dev 3 src kernel jun 13 21:26:21 cuba NetworkManager[28642]: [1497381981.3191] platform: signal: address 4 removed: 192.168.0.55/24 lft 0sec pref 0sec lifetime 106935-99735[7200,7200] dev 3 src kernel The "address: adding or updating IPv4 address" message comes right after receiving a message from dhclient, because it sent a DHCPREQUEST and received a DHCPACK: jun 13 19:26:21 cuba dhclient[13154]: DHCPREQUEST of 192.168.0.55 on eth1 to 192.168.0.3 port 67 (xid=0xfd7483b) jun 13 19:26:21 cuba dhclient[13154]: DHCPACK of 192.168.0.55 from 192.168.0.3 jun 13 19:26:21 cuba NetworkManager[28642]: [1497374781.0748] bus-manager: (dhcp) accepted connection 0x7f9ae000fc60 on private socket jun 13 19:26:21 cuba NetworkManager[28642]: [1497374781.0759] dhcp4 (eth1): DHCP reason 'RENEW' -> state 'bound' Within the 2 hours lifetime of the IP address, another DHCPREQUEST & DHCPACK occurs, and some communication is attempted between dhclient and NetworkManager, but this doesn't result in the state change as seen above: jun 13 20:20:11 cuba dhclient[13154]: DHCPREQUEST of 192.168.0.55 on eth1 to 192.168.0.3 port 67 (xid=0xfd7483b) jun 13 20:20:11 cuba dhclient[13154]: DHCPACK of 192.168.0.55 from 192.168.0.3 jun 13 20:20:11 cuba NetworkManager[28642]: [1497378011.6527] bus-manager: (dhcp) accepted connection 0x7f9ae0019060 on private socket jun 13 20:20:11 cuba NetworkManager[28642]: [1497378011.6527] bus-manager: (dhcp) closed connection 0x7f9ae0019060 on private socket jun 13 20:20:11 cuba dhclient[13154]: bound to 192.168.0.55 -- renewal in 2731 seconds. So, crucially, there is an attempted communication between dhclient and NetworkManager, but this doesn't result in an update to the lifetime of the IPv4 address. I'll focus my investigation on this. [Bug 1696415] [NEW] NetworkManager seems to drop IPv4 DHCP lease even though it was successfully renewed
Public bug reported: I've found an issue on some of our Xenial office machines, causing NetworkManager to drop its IP address lease in some cases when it shouldn't. I'm not sure if the actual bug is in NetworkManager or perhaps dbus or dhclient, but I'll do my best to help to figure out where it is. What appears to happen: * NetworkManager is informed of a new IPv4 lease. * During the lease, dhclient keeps it fresh by renewing it using DHCPREQUESTs regularly. * In spite of this, NetworkManager drops the IP address from the interface when the last reported lease time expires. This happens on various machines, once every few days. We are using a failover DHCP configuration using two machines (192.168.0.3 'bonaire' and 192.168.0.4 'curacao'). The machine where I've done the debugging is called 'pampus' (192.168.0.166). [Bug 898689] [NEW] OpenJDK does not find libpcsc, fails silently, causing smartcard applications to fail
Public bug reported: The current versions of OpenJDK do not correctly find the libpcsc native C library, causing them to remove PC/SC support silently. This breaks smartcard applications, as javax.smartcardio uses libpcsc to interface with smartcard terminals. Please see the attached Example.java. It loads the default smartcardio terminal factory, and shows the type. Currently, Java JDK supports two terminal types[0]: "None" (a dummy type which always says there are no terminals) and "PC/SC" (interfaces with PC/SC terminals). The PC/SC terminal factory is the default, but if it cannot be loaded, the Java library silently falls back to "None". Now, on Ubuntu, the library searches for the PC/SC library in /usr/lib and /usr/local/lib, but libpcsclite1 installs its library file in /lib/libpcsclite.so.1.0.0. [Bug 16467] Re: [MASTER] aptitude/apt-get segmentation fault on currupted cache
The feature suggested by Julian Andres Klode sounds like a good fix for this, invalidating the cache if one of those values (magics or sizes) in header or footer are incorrect. However, I'm wondering, how does invalid cache lead to a segmentation fault? Are memory locations or even binary instructions saved to the cache, or are the values simply used without checking them? [Bug 542059] Re: KNotify opens an incorrect dialog in a GNOME environment
Reporting this bug back to kdebase-runtime. I had a chat with Sebastien Bacher. We both agree that notify-osd behaviour isn't what it should be, but this is by design, since notify-osd doesn't support actions. KNotify *does* support actions, and as such, it should either: * tell applications not to send actions if it uses notify-osd (see below) * remove the actions itself * not use notify-osd as a backend. I opt for option three, therefore I will rename this bug to "KNotify should not use notify-osd as a notification backend, because it does not support actions." For reference; Sebastien and I agree that this bug should actually be fixed deeply in knotify, because it has no API to tell applications what its notification backend supports. By default, it supports everything including actions, therefore it should not use notify-osd as a backend. ** Package changed: notify-osd (Ubuntu) => kdebase-runtime (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: kdebase-runtime (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New ** Summary changed: - KNotify opens an incorrect dialog in a GNOME environment + KNotify should not use notify-osd as a notification backend, because it does not support actions -- KNotify should not use notify-osd as a notification backend, because it does not support actions https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/542059 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase-runtime in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 542059] Re: KNotify opens an incorrect dialog in a GNOME environment
KNotify is unable to hide its actions, as it does not define the actions itself, it allows its applications to define them. If notify-osd isn't able to display those actions, I think another way of displaying notifications should be added that does support actions. The current knotify->notify-osd behaviour is unacceptable, and can't be fixed in knotify itself. (and even if it could, we all know how those bugreports go on bugs.kde.org, they get buried and never looked at again.) I'm prepared to do the required changes myself in either notify-osd, knotify or somewhere else, but I want to know where to fix this bug. ** Changed in: notify-osd (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New -- KNotify opens an incorrect dialog in a GNOME environment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/542059 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

So this is KMess 2.0 .1dev-svn, using KDE 4.3.2 in Karmic right now. Steps to reproduce: 1. Run a KDE application that uses KDE notifications. I tested with KMess, will test with i.e. Amarok later. 2. Click one of the buttons on your panel so that its submenu pops up. I clicked Quick Access, so it showed my home directory. 3. Let the KDE application send a notification to Plasma. In the case of KMess, have someone talk to you while for example Quick Access is open. 4. The notification shows. [Bug 405378] Re: [karmic] in KDE apport does not open the browser to report a bug
Tried to find out a little more regarding this. ubuntu-bug just spawns an ubuntu-kde process, as it should; when killing ubuntu-bug ubuntu-kde stays in the system, so that's not the problem. The problem is that ubuntu-kde, after trying to send, seems to freeze/halt in a poll(): poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=9, events=POLLIN}, {fd=10, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8, events=POLLIN}], 4, 18779) = 1 ([{fd=8, revents=POLLIN}]) read(8, "\34\257\311 \247\1\0\0\325\1\0\0\237\337\340\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0\0P\317)\1\0\0\0\0"..., 4096) = 64 read(8, 0x29f25e4, 4096)= -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) read(8, 0x29f25e4, 4096)= -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) read(8, 0x29f25e4, 4096)= -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=9, events=POLLIN}, {fd=10, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8, events=POLLIN}], 4, 18726) = 1 ([{fd=8, revents=POLLIN}]) read(8, "\34K\311 \247\1\0\0\333\1\0\0\271\337\340\0\0\320)\1\0\0\0\0P\317)\1\0\0\0\0"..., 4096) = 64 read(8, 0x29f25e4, 4096)= -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) read(8, 0x29f25e4, 4096)= -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) read(8, 0x29f25e4, 4096)= -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=9, events=POLLIN}, {fd=10, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8, events=POLLIN}], 4, 18699^C Process 2869 detached This last poll() never finishes, probably because it waits for GUI input when all windows are gone. [Bug 403959] [NEW] When accessing an FTP server, I get asked for a password three times, and interface becomes unresponsive as one of the three dialogs disappears under the window itself
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdebase As description says. I go to a password-protected FTP server, and instantly, two dialogs pop up asking for my password. When I fill them both in, I see directory content, but all Dolphin processes become unresponsive. I later noticed this is because another password dialog popped up *below* the dolphin windows. This is most probably the shitty kwm focus stealing prevention working up again, but on the other hand, the interface shouldn't react like this too: it should focus the dialog when the window is clicked, or in another way make it apparent that it's waiting for the users' input somewhere. [Bug 403260] [NEW] Can't change settings for applications that only play sounds for very short periods of time
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pavucontrol There are many applications that often play very short sounds. I think they usually leave their connection to Pulseaudio open all the time, but for example, KDE applications (most notably those using KNotify) open a connection to PulseAudio, play a short sound, and then close the connection again. This makes the application appear for a second in pavucontrol, then disappear; a time lapse too short to change settings (for example, move the stream to a different output channel). My expected behavior here is that the application stays around for, for example, half a minute, maybe grayed out or something to indicate that the application isn't connected anymore. I think this should be fixed in Pavucontrol, but maybe I'm wrong and Pulseaudio itself should be changed to fix this bug. Feel free to re-target if need be. This could also be considered a papercut, maybe, but I think all 100 papercuts are already chosen, and a first-time user probably won't see it on his first day of using Ubuntu since Pavucontrol could be considered a more advanced application. ** Affects: pavucontrol (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Can't change settings for applications that only play sounds for very short periods of time https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/403260 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 398619] Re: Sound switches to my monitor with USB soundcard when I run earcandy
Shouldn't you read stuff like that from Pulseaudio instead of from Gnome's internal configuration? Maybe you could make Earcandy not use one master output channel, since that would effectively disable Pulseaudio's support for letting different applications stream to different sound cards. What about a setup that Earcandy saves the sound card for all applications, and when an USB device is plugged in (after Earcandy loaded the initial list of audio devices), it switches sound from all applications to that device - except those flagged "don't switch when an USB device is connected" or something? Keep up the good work - even though the application is currently unusable for me because of this bug, it's a very good idea and will certainly make 2009 the Year of the Linux Desktop. ;) -- Sound switches to my monitor with USB soundcard when I run earcandy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/398619 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

What do you think about something like - Don't let earcandy be obtrusive when it just started. When I plug in an USB headset after it's started, fine, but for devices detected initially, just leave it be, and let the device that had audio also be the "fallback" audio device when I plug in a headset and then plug it out again. That would fix it for me, and still leave that nice feature around. If you want, you could even add a menu item to your right-click menu that says "Switch audio device" to do it manually if the user already had a headset connected and wants to switch control to that (and they don't have pavucontrol running or so). :) -- Sound switches to my monitor with USB soundcard when I run earcandy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/398619 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 398623] [NEW] Earcandy detects File Manager as a music player and doesn't know what Amarok is, and other glitches
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: earcandy When I just ran Earcandy, it told me it detected two applications, Firefox and the file manager. It saw the file manager as an audio player. Even though Amarok was running (but not playing), it did not show up; I also couldn't add a rule for it. When I later restarted Earcandy, Amarok showed up as an unknown application and the File Manager was still the music player, just like Pavucontrol, the PulseAudio volume control. Setting Amarok as a music player did not update the UI; when I restarted the application later, Amarok showed correctly (but without any icon) and the volume control didn't show up anymore. Expected behaviour: It should recognize Amarok as a music player (even if it's not playing?), it should not think the file manager (I don't think I had any running, let alone playing sound, but maybe it thought plasma-desktop was a file manager?) is a music player, Pavucontrol should not be recognized as a music player, and the UI should update correctly when I change settings. [Bug 387573] Re: Drop-down calendar does not close unless you click on it
I can't believe the... lack of common sense... of some users. Anyway, in general, they missed that clicking the time opened the calendar, and didn't understand how to close it. I'm actually against having a close button, since then there's two ways to close it and that could be confusing; also closing it by re-clicking the time is more intuitive if they know it actually does that. So what about letting them know it actually does that, by, for example, highlighting the time when the calendar is open? Something like in OS X. If the calendar is open, the time in the panel is highlighted, and closing the calendar brings the time back to its original state. It shows users the relationship between the two, in an intuitive way; they will be able to find out how it works on themselves. Do you think that's an idea? So I propose this fix for this complete bug: 1) When the calendar is open, highlight the time in the panel 2) Show something like a paperclip or other icon on the calendar, and when clicked, the calendar stays around and doesn't close automatically (or the other way around: when clicked, it always disappears after a while). -- Drop-down calendar does not close unless you click on it https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387573 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Still happens for me! [Bug 308605] Re: [MASTER]Firefox is already running message
No processes running? Try 'ps aux | grep firefox'. If you are really sure, please run 'strace firefox 2>firefox.strace' (you will hopefully get the same error) and upload firefox.strace somewhere, or put the contents on a pastebin. -- [MASTER]Firefox is already running message https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308605 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 308605] Re: [MASTER]Firefox is already running message
You make Firefox create a new profile, then move all old contents to the new one. This most probably removes a "lock file". When Firefox starts, it notes in the profile "this one is already in use", so a new Firefox process doesn't corrupt that profile by using it twice at the same time. You're working around that by creating a new profile, then moving the contents open, thus making it possible for Firefox to unintentionally destroy your data. Just use the workarounds in this bug report: Run "killall firefox" in your terminal so it dies again. For the purpose of this bug report: I haven't had this bug in ages. Maybe the bug was in KDE/Qt (since that shows up in the backtrace) and it has since been fixed. On the other hand, sometimes it seems to be caused by other things, like pulseaudio and maybe flash: when a firefox instance is still around, killall pulseaudio kills it too, iirc. Any other known causes for this bug to appear? If not, I think the bug is safe to close. -- [MASTER]Firefox is already running message https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/308605 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

As said in the original bug report. Anyway, any clues as to a yakuake patch in Jaunty? [Bug 387573] Re: Drop-down calendar does not close unless you click on it
What Omer Mano wrote is something like KDE (at least 4.3) has, only it has it in reverse: 1. When the user clicks on the time then focuses another window, the calendar stays. 2. When the user drags the calendar away, it becomes a separate window. Currently, the window then disappears right away (that's probably a bug, since I'm using 4.3 beta2...) but it should disappear when focusing another window. I can't decide on whether Omer's or KDE's behavior (except for the bug, naturally) is more intuitive or logical, though. It's a matter of opinion. At least the idea is great, it's all in the details :) -- Drop-down calendar does not close unless you click on it https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387573 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 387573] Re: Drop-down calendar does not close unless you click on it
I agree with Textureglitch. Maybe behavior like Yakuake's is in order: It has a button; when pressed, Yakuake stays open even if it loses focus, when unpressed it closes automatically. Though Yakuake's icon is quite unclear, adding such a simple button would fix this bug for both kinds of people: those who want it to close automatically, and those who don't. The button could simply have a thumbtack icon, with a little tooltip that explains what it does. No usability hacks, makes everybody happy. However, such a solution does not qualify as a papercut, I think, so maybe this one should be marked as invalid and a different real papercut should be selected. Let's not leave users in the dark by just changing this behavior to what *other* people want. :) -- Drop-down calendar does not close unless you click on it https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387573 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
