[Bug 1815339] Re: Printer stopped printing paper size 4"x6" after update ghostscript to 9.26

2020-11-21 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
FWIW, for distributions which haven't published the fix yet (e.g.
Slackware AFAICS), RIP_MAX_CACHE can be overwritten by adding this line
to cupsd.conf (also editable through CUPS web interface on
localhost:631) :

RIPCache 0

(replace 0 by whatever suits for you).

[Bug 1652462] Re: No init after do-release-upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 (kernel panic)

2017-01-03 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
I'm glad to see some activity on this report, however I'm afraid it will
be difficult to investigate further, because I installed a fresh 16.04
since then.

All I can say is I chrooted on the root partition from a live CD and
tried to upgrade with apt, and figured the installation was completely
broken with unsolvable conflicts. Not only fcitx, but dozens of
dependencies.

Sorry I can't give more insight, I didn't have much time to investigate
further and it didn't occur to me to keep logs.

Just found there might be some information in /var/log/dpkg.log and
/var/log/dist-upgrade/, I'll dig there when I find some time.

[Bug 1652462] [NEW] No init after do-release-upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 (kernel panic)

2016-12-24 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
Public bug reported:

I tried to upgrade from an up-to-date and working Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04
using do-release-upgrade. The process seemed to complete successfully
except for a couple of errors regarding fcitx packages, which I choose
to ignore and fix later.

I then proceeded to reboot, but the system hanged during the shutdown so
I decided to hard reboot.

However, I was greeted by a kernel panic preceded by straightforward
error messages :

run-init: /sbin/init: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init.
run-init: /sbin/init: No such file or directory
run-init: /etc/init: Permission denied
run-init: /bin/init: No such file or directory
/bin/sh: 0: Can't open splash
Kernel panic — not syncing: Attempted to kill init! exitcode=0x7f00
etc. (last two lines mentioned for SEO purposes)

Indeed, these files don't exist. It seems /var/log/apt/history.log
doesn't log "do-release-upgrade", so I have no clue about what went
wrong during the upgrade.

FWIW, I can keep the laptop in this state for a couple of days and check
or try whatever is proposed (though I'd rather avoid involving a live CD
or similar).

[Bug 1529497] [NEW] Frequent iwlwifi crashes

2015-12-27 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
Public bug reported:

I experience very frequent wireless network deconnections on my laptop.
A typical case is when I close the screen : when I open it again, the
network is systematically gone. Sometimes it's just that the wifi
options won't show up in NetworkManager dropdown menu, but on other
occasions the menu says that the wifi has been turned off with a
hardware switch (there is no such switch on the laptop).

Syslog shows crashes related to iwlwifi (search for "Trace" in the
attached file).

Sorry for the poor report, but I don't have much time to narrow down the
issue. Of course I can add whichever information is needed.

[Bug 1501421] [NEW] Ubuntu 14.04 displays strange characters

2015-09-30 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
Public bug reported:

Quite often, when "opening" the laptop after it has been "closed" for a
while, the display is completely messed up, i.e. most characters are
corrupted with alien-like characters. Attached is an explicit
screenshot of Thunderbird tabs (the first tab should read "Courrier
entrant", the second line "Relever ; Écrire ; ? ; Adresses ; Étiquettes
; Filtre rapide", etc.), but most applications (Firefox, gnome-terminal,
LibreOffice, Gnumeric, windows titles and menus, right-click menus,
etc.) are affected. Some of these issues (e.g. tabs) can be fixed by
hovering them with the cursor, but not all.

No, this is a side effect of this bug. As long as the virtual area is
accessible, there is no reason for the DE/WM not to authorize icons or
windows to move in the virtual area. If this behaviour persists once
the present bug is fixed, *then* I'll file a bug for that.

[Bug 489614] Re: Painfully slow gtk drawing when input method is defunct

2010-10-04 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
Hi,

I cannot say for now, I don't use Ubuntu myself : the system (which now
uses Karmic) is on my wife's laptop and I won't have access to it before
a few weeks, so one will have to remind me… I have not heard of any
similar issue since Karmic is installed, but I can't say for sure that
the input method is configured the very same way.

However, given the post #5 it should be easy to check on a test machine.

[Bug 573103] Re: scim-bridge crahes due to segfault error 4 in libscim-1.0.so.8.2.4

2010-05-16 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
Mmh… For some reason it works again, but not in gnome-terminal, which I
was using for testing — however I'm not sure it has ever worked in
gnome-terminal on this setup (though I'm sure it works on other setups),
since this is not my computer. So most probably (re)moving ~/.scim did
the trick and the quoted messages are irrelevant.

[Bug 573103] Re: scim-bridge crahes due to segfault error 4 in libscim-1.0.so.8.2.4

2010-05-16 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
Same error message and exactly the same symptoms as Hans here, on a
Karmic Koala. Scim crashed yesterday morning without any reason
(apparently last update was 10 days ago, and scim has been used daily
since then), and won't launch anymore.

Moving the ~/.scim directory does help a bit : it allows to launch scim again,
but I still can't manage to get it working, scim-bridge regularly complains in
syslog :
-
scim-bridge: No such IMContext
scim-bridge: An invalid char is given at scim_bridge_string_to_uint (): -
scim-bridge: Invalid message: Close the connection.

2009-12-30 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
You're probably right on your first point, though I'm not sure how to
file the bug upstream. A concerted complaint from every distro
accompagnied by a blacklist would probably be more efficient. The
question is : do some cards work successfully with this driver ?

And you're definitely right on the second point. PLEASE blacklist this
buggy driver or at least (in case it may work for lucky people) warn the
user from activating it !!!

BTW, just installed Debian stable, same issue.

[Bug 368679] Re: wifi module rtl8180 freezes the system

2009-12-29 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
Having a Zyxel G-302 v3, I can confirm this bug. The system will freeze
out at any moment : it can be during the boot or during the user
session, but it will freeze for sure if you try to connect to a wifi
network.

For information, similar issues occur with Fedora, though it happens
only while trying to connect or during shutdown, see

[Bug 489614] Re: [Hardy] Painfully slow gtk drawing (update : SCIM related)

2009-11-28 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
Ok, here is what I have done since removing scim-related packages, and
conclusions :

1/ Reinstalled scim packages and launched scim from a terminal : seemed
to work.

2/ Set GTK_IM_MODULE to scim-bridge in /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim then
restarted the gnome session : seemed to work.

3/ Installed scim-m17n, then activated chinese in system >
administration > linguistical support (menu name roughly translated from
French), which installed 25 packages then asked for a restart : after
reboot, scim is once again defunct and system slow.

So as I don't have much time to spent on it, I give up and install
Karmic.

IMPORTANT NOTE : In case some GTK developper reads me : it should be
wise to add some "try/catch" statement or something like that to check
that the input method is actually effective, so that such a bug does not
happen.

** Description changed:

+ Edit : Issue identified : when input method is defunct, GTK apps will
+ hang for a long while. One should add a try/catch statement somewhere
+ in GTK to avoid such a behaviour.

for most applications (I am talking of 10s latencies) : Firefox and
gnome-terminal especially, a bit faster for Opera, normal for nautilus,
synaptic or wicd.
- * Happens both under Gnome and XFCE.
- * Seems linked to GTK applications.
- * No problems with decorators, and though the computer is not using Compiz I
tested it and it didn't change anything.
- * Doesn't seem to be a hardware issue since live cds of different other
distributions seem to work fine.
- * Doesn't seem related to CPU issues either, it is not used that much.
Strangely, top shows two instances of Xorg — but killing the inactive one
doesn't help.

Hell, why is it always that the last thing I check is the right one ? I
removed all scim related packages, rebooted, and the system is back to
normal speed (it had GTK_IM_MODULE set to scim-bridge).

Now I have to figure out if there is something broken in scim or if my
setup is somehow wrong. Not sure if I do that or install Karmic
instead, in which case I won't update this report. We'll see.

[Bug 489614] Re: [Hardy] Painfully slow gtk drawing

2009-11-28 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
The report may not be precise enough : what happens is that when I
launch first gnome-terminal, for instance, metacity decorations are
fine, I can move the window, but it is empty : white and grey background
(grey on the menu position) without any text, for about 10s. Then if I
switch between firefox and gnome-terminal, for instance, the terminal
text will appear but it will take about 10s to give me hand on the
terminal. For firefox, it will take ages to redraw the whole page and a
fortiori to give me hand. Finally, trying to open the menu of a window
is about as slow as switching to another window.

This painful bug is not Ubuntu-related, see for instance

Please report upstream.

I am not sure about the procedure in such a case, so I reopen this bug

[Bug 228302] Re: [Hardy] No DMA nor 32bits IO support anymore

2009-08-22 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
Any update on this ? I still won't have access to my Ubuntu box for
months and don't have time to install a new one just for that, but I
think this bug should be closed as soon as possible, so if anyone could
test and confirm the post #15…

Unfortunately I think I won't be able to test this before a long while.
Hopefully other subscribers will report on this.

[Bug 228302] Re: [Hardy] No DMA nor 32bits IO support anymore

2008-07-14 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
Is anyone even caring about this fucking bug ?!? Two monthes that it has
been filed, and still open, still flagged as "New" and even still of
"Undecided" importance while the solution is so well-known !!! (I didn't
have access to the computer up to now)

The problem is related to the libATA. It is likely to be related to
Intel's combined mode, however I found the solutions listed on libATA
website only after solving the problem another way.

I suggest people to feedback after testing solutions given here : http
://linux-ata.org/faq.html#combined

If it doesn't work (as I said I didn't test myself, found it too late), then
try with "my" (actually well disseminated on the web) solution : add those
lines to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist :
blacklist pata_atiixp
blacklist pata_acpi
blacklist sg
blacklist sr_mod
blacklist sd_mod
(NB : it was not necessary for me to blacklist sg and sd_mod, but I had
problems only with my DVD recorder)

/dev/sdX will become /dev/hdX and UUIDs will change, so don't forget to
change entries in /etc/fstab (and maybe /boot/grub/menu.lst) and swap's
UUID in /etc/initramsf-tools/conf.d/resume (and to "update-initramfs -u
-k all" after this latter operation). [Reminder: "blkid" for knowing
UUIDs]

Old perfs (hdparm -T) :
 Timing cached reads: 2 MB in  2.39 seconds = 856.86 kB/sec
New perfs :
 Timing cached reads:   1028 MB in  2.00 seconds = 514.25 MB/sec

Thanks guys.

[Bug 228302] [NEW] [Hardy] No DMA nor 32bits IO support anymore

2008-05-08 Thread Skippy le Grand Gourou
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I installed Ubuntu Hardy on a Compaq Presario R4206EA (R4000 series)
which had Edgy on another partition. This laptop has a DVD-RW burner
which works fine under Edgy, however the DMA activation and 32 bits IO
support fail under Hardy. The immediate consequence is that it is
impossible to watch a DVD on it (too jerky), and that it takes 3h20 to
burn a 3.5GB data DVD…

Here is the output of hdparm under Hardy :

--- 8< ---
$ sudo hdparm /dev/cdrom (seen as /dev/scd0)
/dev/cdrom:
 IO_support=  0 (default)
16-bit)
 HDIO_GET_UNMASKINTR failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
 HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
 HDIO_GET_KEEPSETTINGS failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
 readonly  =  0 (off)
 readahead = 256 (on)
 HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
--- 8< ---

Same under Edgy :

--- 8< ---
$ sudo hdparm /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc:
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq=  0 (off)
 using_dma=  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly =  0 (off)
 readahead= 256 (on)
 HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
--- 8< ---

Here are the capabilities of the burner (same output in both versions) :

--- 8< ---
$ sudo hdparm -i /dev/cdrom
/dev/cdrom:
 Model=TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L532R, FwRev=HA05,
SerialNo=454F208147
 Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }
 RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
 BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=2048kB, MaxMultSect=0
 (maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0
 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
 PIO modes:  pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
 DMA modes:  sdma0 sdma1 sdma2 mdma0 mdma1 *mdma2
 AdvancedPM=no
 Drive conforms to: ATA/ATAPI-7 T13 1532D revision 1:  ATA/ATAPI-3,4,5,6,7
 * signifies the current active mode
--- 8< ---

And then, under Hardy :

--- 8< ---
$ sudo hdparm -c1 -d /dev/cdrom
/dev/cdrom:
 setting 32-bit IO_support flag to 1
 HDIO_SET_32BIT failed: Invalid argument
 IO_support=  0 (default)
16-bit)
 HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
--- 8< ---

I used to boot Edgy on a customed 2.6.20 kernel for other reasons. I use
Hardy's default one. I cannot perform any other tests on Edgy because I already
formated it (may have the kernel config somewhere if needed though). Please
find verbose lspci, dmidecode and lshw output in attachment. Forgot dmesg, I
will send it asap (laptop not available now).

I was in a hurry and didn't have much time to perform tests on the hard
drive. I think it has the same kind of problems, but I don't remember
well and am thus not sure. I will communicate about it when available
(not before one month though…).

However, I notice that X is eating more and more memory. The command "top"
gives currently :

10223 root  20   0  416m 116m 6220 S  4.0 23.1 146:12.77 X

Hope this will be of interest...

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 151168 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151168

Tell me if this is the wrong place for me, since my config is a bit
different. However, if this is the same issue, my contribution might
point to other leads.

So, I'm using ArchLinux but I don't think it is distro-related, Compiz
with default effects, and I'm running the free radeon driver for my
Radeon 9200 Pro (Rv280), so the main difference is that I don't use a
nvidia graphic card (however my mainboard is a nvidia :-D).

What I observe is that if I let my computer on for a long time, it will
randomly freeze, and when I come back I will have to perform a hard
reboot, while the screen shows a static xscreensaver screenshot.

/var/log/messages say oom-killer was invoked several times because all swap was
used (0KB free). Here is a snaphot of all processes using more than 20% of the
memory just before the freeze (ps aux | awk '$4>20 { print $0}') : a X burst,
then compiz increases.

I think that this bug is the same as #60825 (see my config and report
there), since I have also noticed problems with gnome applications after
a network-manager induced keyboard freeze --- actually, their loading
stops after a while...
