I'm also seeing this issue with a Maxtor Seagate 1 TB external USB 3 hard drive on HP Pavilion Desktop PC 570-p0xx System is Kubuntu 16.04.3 LTS with Kernel 4.13.0-32-generic The workaround/quirk from the original post makes the errors go away, but the device is really slow. lsusb output Bus 005 Device 003: ID 0bc2:61b6 Seagate RSS LLC Drive is brand new and has no SMART errors. Public bug reported: When trying to install Kubuntu vivid daily 20150405 amd 64 using the minimum memory requirements of 384 MB RAM from Precise Pangolin (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/ReleaseNotes/UbuntuDesktop#System_Requirements - Could not find something similar for Trusty Tahr or Vivid) the installation fails. The problem is, that the user is not told exactly what the problem is, as only the stacktrace of the installer is shown. (Only at the bottom of the stacktrace is a hint that only technical experienced users can understand.) Additionally the crash messages is not localized to german. Select "Encrypt whole hard disk with lvm" and enter some password. 3. Click on "Install now". 4. A window opens that informs you about the changes that will be written to the hard disk. 5. Click on "back". 6. "Automatically - use whole hard disk" is selected automatically. 7. Click again on "Install now". Expected behaviour: User is informed about the changes that will be written to disk. Observed behaviour: The user is warned about unencrypted swap. The before empty virtual disk seems to be already partitioned from the previous install attempt from step 3. When accepting the warning the user needs to partiton the disk himself. Still have the problem. Ubuntu 12.04 It freezes on Connection dialog and only xkill helps to kill the process.
