[Bug 761587] Re: Unity makes Gajim unusable

2013-07-15 Thread Drew Snellgrove
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 587272 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/587272

Blacklisting system tray icons has been by design for a long time. They
purposely removed the ability to edit the blacklist in 13.04. What's
been done has been annoying and due to the fracturing of the indicator
systems (system tray vs. app indicator vs. whatever gnome/kde are using
these days) a lot of application developers have stopped trying to
support the many ways to do indicators and just asked their users to
make plugins, assuming that popular needs would be solved. Despite being
annoying, I question whether this is a "bug" at all. It's all by
intentional design.

The plugin that was referred to is Gajim's way of supporting Unity's
appindicator system. You can find it Gajim in Edit->Plugins or http
://trac-plugins.gajim.org/wiki/AppindicatorSupportPlugin. Since this is
the "official" way of getting appindicator support at this time this bug
should probably be closed as "won't fix" since Unity won't be backing
down on this change.

[Bug 1018215] Re: Unity launcher appearing interrupts GTK drag and drop operation (that's nowhere near the launcher)

2012-10-21 Thread Drew Snellgrove
Actually here's a screencast I made more clearly demonstrating the
effects of this bug in nautilus. I try to show that dragging very
quickly or very slowly works fine, but dragging and releasing right when
the launcher is fading causes the drag to terminate and the icon reset.
The 14-21 second stretch includes me repeating it six times in a row on
the desktop (this happens in normal usage...oh so frustrating). 35-37
shows it happening twice in a row when dragging from the desktop and a
window and at ~57 I managed to do it from the window to the desktop.

Each occurrence of a drag & drop failure corresponds with a seeming
"flicker" of the launcher in the video. That's when the launcher fade is
only partially complete when releasing the mouse button, causing it to
fade back in rapidly.

[Bug 1018215] Re: Unity launcher appearing interrupts GTK drag and drop operation (that's nowhere near the launcher)

2012-10-21 Thread Drew Snellgrove
Drag & drop operations in nautilus are also terminated if the mouse
button is released at the same time the unity launcher performs its
"fade" operation. A demonstration of this issue happens in this
screencase
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1060580/+attachment/3367038/+files/drag%20and%20drop.ogv
from an unrelated bug, issue happens at the 32 second mark)

This can be demonstrated across the deaktop and between windows if the
mouse button is released during the same fraction of a second the
launcher fades. Since this corresponds to a relatively common speed I
seem to move at I can have file move operations simple fail to happen up
to four times in a row until I'm either faster than when the launcher
fade begins or slower than when it ends. In other words if the
"hijacking" occurs during the same time I release my mouse button
nautilus has no idea where I dropped the file since my mouse has "left"
the program's window. If this description is unclear I can try creating
a screencast that demonstrates the issue more clearly in Nautilus.

This happened for me under Precise and is still happening under Quantal.

[Bug 969343] Re: Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless

2012-05-21 Thread Drew Snellgrove
Downgrading openssl to 1.0.0e-2ubuntu4 (and not doing anything to
wpa_supplicant) correct the issue for me but break work-critical
packages that depend on >= openssl 1.0.1 (curl, virtualbox etc). So it's
using wifi at work or doing work at work :(

I'm not a wpa_supplicant expert but this may indicate that either
wpa_supplicant is not at fault or openssl is not at fault and
wpa_supplicant just doesn't work correctly in this corner case with the
new version of openssl. Upstream may be able to make that educated
determination

[Bug 397617] Re: brightness no more working on karmic (KMS)

2010-04-14 Thread Drew Snellgrove
I haven't done extensive regression testing to prove it was the specific
patch above but the issue was resolved between Lucid alpha-3 and beta-1.
I suspect it was in the commit for bug 511965 in kernel 2.6.32-19.28.
That patch may need to be expanded upon to include support for
additional Macbook models or it may be another issue entirely for the
1,1 models. Since I only have a (working) 2,1 now I really can't
confirm the issue with the 1,1s. Best to follow Steffen's instructions
and keep reporting on bug 511965 with your hardware information until
more information turns up.

This is entirely fixed for my Macbook 2,1 using the latest Lucid liveCD

using the brightness keys built into the keyboard. I'd be tempted to
call the brightness experience perfect out the gate.

[Bug 527458] Re: please include status messages/tooltips

2010-03-25 Thread Drew Snellgrove
Colin largely sums up my feelings on the matter as well as my
interpretation of (what I see as a flaw in) Mark's perspective. Tooltip
information is something that I check not just daily but several times
per hour and include:

-Which WIFI network I'm connected to (I have to juggle a couple at work)
-The currently playing track in Rhythmbox
-Estimated time remaining on my battery
-Audio output percentage over 100%

What makes this especially aggravating [every ten minutes] is the latter
two, which as others have explained are NOT available with a simple
click at this time.

There are ways to beatify and improve tooltips (example here:
http://blogs.gnome.org/mccann/2009/11/01/just-leave-it-on-the-counter/
), and just naming obvious icons is certainly something that should be
avoided as a properly designed icon SHOULD be self-explanatory. But
removing them outright glosses over the place where tooltips truly
shine, which is providing useful, specific, informative details that do
not have a place in the primary GUI or that can be summed up in the
icon. The perfect example is the battery meter icon which is easily
identifiable without a tooltip, displays battery/adapter status, and an
at-a-glance approximation of the charge. What it is unable to display
without unnecessary clutter is the precise charge percentage and
estimated time remaining, which are very useful details and should be
available with absolute minimal interruption of the user's workflow.

Requiring several clicks and refocusing is ADDING to interruption and
user interface clutter, not reducing it. The real consequences of this
change are PRECISELY CONTRARY to the intended consequence. Yes tooltips
are used poorly in some instances. A targeted approach to
beautification and alignment with purpose is certainly due but mass
removal is the completely wrong approach to the problem. I understand
that it's too late to beautify and target tooltip issues individually
but it isn't too late to leave them in place. To top it all off an LTS
release when Ubuntu is at the height of its technological polish is
absolutely the wrong place to leave such a glaring wound in the
individual user's experience.

There seem to be a number of people, including Macbook users, reporting

most relevant and most comments seemed to point to this one as well.

Karmic default) or linux-image-2.6.32-020632rc5-generic (most recent
from the kernel ppa)

Also tried xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2 (current Karmic
default) and 2:2.9.0+git20091019.751e0a3e-0ubuntu0tormod2 (from xorg-
edgers ppa).

Using 'nomodeset' when booting either kernel drops me into a terminal
login that flickers unendingly.

It's been mentioned a couple times this was fixed through a kernel patch
but I'm unsure if it's made it into linux-
image-2.6.32-020632rc5-generic. Is there anything else I can do to try
and help pin down this bug?

[Bug 450024] Re: [Karmic] ubuntuone-synchronized emblem showing on all files and folders

2009-10-12 Thread Drew Snellgrove
Adding the obligatory "me too" and a relevant http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8096162";>forum thread
of others reporting the same. Consensus seems to be the upgrade of
ubuntuone packages to 1.0.0-0ubuntu1 as the culprit.

[Bug 367309] Re: [i945GM] xrandr backlight control is bizarre on Macbook

2009-10-10 Thread Drew Snellgrove
I've been using Karmic on my Macbook 2,1 since beta but cannot confirm
whether this bug is fixed for me since Karmic can't find a backlight
device _at all_. There discussion in the kernel mailing lists about a
possible fix for this new issue which is macbook specific. I'll update
this bug once I'm done having my eyes burned out.

[Bug 424800] Re: unable to sign in to ubuntuone

2009-10-06 Thread Drew Snellgrove
Confirmed work-around:

Sign into the Ubuntu One website https://one.ubuntu.com
Select a plan (this step I hadn't thought to do manually):
https://one.ubuntu.com/plans/
Once you have confirmed your plan, the authorization process on the local
computer now works

It would be nice if this process were a little more obvious, but at
least everything "works".

[Bug 424800] Re: unable to sign in to ubuntuone

2009-10-05 Thread Drew Snellgrove
I can confirm this bug on a completely fresh installation of 9.10 Beta
plus current updates from the repositories. Behavior on my system is an
exact duplicate of that described above (ever-looping request to log in
to Ubuntu One with your launchpad username displayed correctly) when
using Firefox with a completely new profile and no add-ons (which rules
out the "no script" add-on being the issue). When attempting
authentication with Epiphany or Google Chrome the attached page is
displayed instead.

Also, the storageprotocol package's version does not match the rest of the
ubuntuone suite:

Package: python-ubuntuone-client 0.96.0-0ubuntu1
Package: python-ubuntuone-storageprotocol 0.95.0-0ubuntu1
Package: ubuntuone-client 0.96.0-0ubuntu1
Package: ubuntuone-client-gnome 0.96.0-0ubuntu1
Package: ubuntuone-client-tools 0.96.0-0ubuntu1

[Bug 367309] Re: [i945GM] xrandr backlight control is bizarre on Macbook

2009-05-02 Thread Drew Snellgrove
I have a "Macbook2,1" with an Intel 945GM just like the original poster
and have been experiencing precisely the same symptoms (all the way down
to the behavior of each of the BACKLIGHT_CONTROL methods) as described
in this bug since I started using Jaunty sometime in the alphas. I have
just been using the "combination" method to get a usable backlight
through the following command:

xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL combination

[Bug 39856] Re: Panel in middle of the screen after reboot when not full-sized

2006-07-12 Thread Snellgrove
This just happened to me (its happened before, too) after I changed my
graphics driver to "nv" from "nvidia" and restarted X (obviously, my
resolution was lowered when using "nv")

After doing what I needed to do, I changed back to "nvidia" and back to
lovely high resolution but the panel I normally have at the bottom
(which is not expanded, sits in the centre with my icons) was shrunk
down to 2 icons wide and I couldn't stretch it back out to its normal
size and it was not at the bottom of the screen in the high resolution,
it was where it was when I was running low resolution in the "nv" driver
- so it was near the centre of the screen in terms of height (Y Axis) it
was still in the centre in terms of X axis.

hope this helps..
