I can confirm that the proposed package fixes the bug.

Before:

I'm having the same problem. As a workaround you could install CDT as
Kunal Thakar mentioned. It works for me.

I'm using Edgy too. And the problem appeared again. 
Removing ./.gnome/gnome-vfs/.trash_entry_cache fixed it though.

I think I had the same problem. It said there was 1 item. But there was none in 
it. 
In the file .gnome/gnome-vfs/.trash_entry_cache it seems it caches information 
about the trash can. There was a line pointing to a patch that did not exist 
anymore. When I deleted the file, and reloaded the trashcan applet by 
removing/adding it (maybe logout would work too) it was working probably again.
