[Bug 449910] Re: Certain notification area icons are invisible

2010-03-09 Thread Stefan Berge
Strange... I had problems with Gnome panel on two machines. Tried to re-install
Ubuntu but still, suddenly the panel went completely or partially blank after
reboot.
However, somewhere in mid of february the problem was gone.
I have also tried two Ubuntu derivates: Mint. I didn´t like it, KDE seems
unstable in some situations and programs are several clicks further away than
in Gnome.
Super OS: A standard Ubuntu 9.10 (Both KDE and Gnome, Gnome is default) with a
few extra archives already in place, multimedia codecs installed along with
VLC, RealPlayer, Thunderbird, Skype, aMSN, Google Earth, Moonlight, Wine... and
some other software I normally install after an Ubuntu install anyways. A real
time-saver for me.
And, which is why I write about it: No problem with Gnome Panel whatsoever.

[Bug 449910] Re: Certain notification area icons are invisible

2010-01-14 Thread Stefan Berge
About the same for me. First, no problem.
I have used Ubuntu on my private computer since 2006, on my company computers
since 2008, and when helping friends to install Linux.
I have always re-arranged items so that all of them are on the lower panel, and
then erased the upper panel. This has never caused any problem, until now
(using Karmic).

For a friend of greek origin, I added the keyboard indicator to the panel with
Swedish (we live in Sweden) and Greek keyboard support, while already having
the Notification area, Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice Writer and Calc, Gedit,
Filezilla, Gimp, System monitor, Forced application shutdown, Wastebasket and
clock on the same panel.
Everything seemed to work OK. But when I added the keyboard indicator, the
problem started.
Sometimes everything worked. After other reboots, one or two items disappeared,
sometimes there was only a blank panel (no icons at all), and sometimes the
notification area had two volume controls instead of volume control plus
network manager...

It seemes that too many objects on one panel is what initiated the problem for
me, so I tested this:
I kept the Indicator-Applet-Session (log out/shut down/lock screen et.c.),
Program-Places-System, Keyboard indicator and clock on this panel, and moved
everything else to a new panel, which I placed at the top of the screen. Then I
unchecked the fold-out option and checked the hide automatically option. So,
only the "always necessary" items are on the ever-visible panel at the bottom,
the other items on the invisible panel on top.
After this, I have rebooted about 15-20 times, and the problem never seemes to
appear anymore.
But THIS IS NO SOLUTION. A hole in the road doesn´t disappear just because you
can drive around it.
I would really like to have all-in-one-panel again, as before. It is especially
important when you try to convince someone to leave Windows for Ubuntu, that
they feel at home.
And on modern wide-screen monitors most of us can fit what we need on only one
panel and still have free space left.
So, having all on one panel simply must work. This bug is serious.

RE: [Bug 484976] Re: Flickering on sites with Flash video + Flash buttons

2009-12-04 Thread Stefan Berge

This is strange... I think it depends on how still the flash-ads outside the
video are. This time they were still, and I get no flickering (well, maybe one
at the beginning, but after that it was completely stable. Strange...

RE: [Bug 484976] Re: Flickering on sites with Flash video + Flash buttons

2009-12-04 Thread Stefan Berge

Sorry for the delay, we don´t use this email account every day.
No, it is purely a Firefox + Ubuntu combination that causes the problem.
The same Ubuntu installation, but with Opera webbrowser -- no problem.
Firefox with Mandriva One or OpenSuse -- no problem.
Only Firefox (3.5) with Ubuntu 9.10.
Previously (Firefox 3 and Ubuntu 9.04) we had no problem, this is a new one.

Best regards

Stefan Berge

[Bug 484976] [NEW] Flickering on sites with Flash video + Flash buttons

2009-11-18 Thread Stefan Berge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

With Ubuntu 9.10 installed, 64-bit or 32-bit doesn´t matter, the following
happens:
When watching a page with a flash video + flash buttons beside it, both video
and the rest of the page experience random flickering and flashes (no joke).
This is one of our favourite news sites (swedish) and if you have Ubuntu 9.10
you probably get the same problem we do when watching it:
http://playrapport.se/
Double-clicking to get full screen video (no flash buttons visible, of course)
removes the flickering, but wathing in a window (to get access to the buttons
to change video is a real pain.

We have installed 9.10 on four different computers, all got the same
problem.

It is not an overload, the computer I use right now has a processor load
of about 50 %, and only 10.2% of the 4 GB RAM is being used. This
computer has Nvidia 8200 graphics card, we have tested both Nvidia
drivers recommended with the same result. Turning off visual effects
(Compiz) doesn´t help either.

We have used a separate harddisk to install and test other distros that also
use the Gnome desktop to see if that is the problem:
Mandriva One 2010 (gnome) works fine, no flashing.
OpenSuse 11.2 (gnome) works fine, no flashing.
And Ubuntu 9.04 also works perfectly.
The problem is ONLY on Ubuntu 9.10 and on all computers we have installed it
on, both 32-bit Ubuntu + 32 bit flash plugin and 64-bit with the 64 bit flash
plugin (from Adobe). And on all our graphics cards: Intel graphics on the
laptop computer, three different Nvidia cards, 6100, 7300 and 8200.
Trying Opera there was no flickering/flashing but it couldn´t get the video
size right...

The same site ( http://svtplay.se/ ) also has other flash videos, but no
flash buttons beside them, and those videos work just fine, also in a
window.

Overwriting should be OK, as I don´t plan to do any update until the
final 9.10 arrives. By then, this bug will surely have been taken care
of.

[Bug 439784] Re: invalid: environment block

2009-10-10 Thread Stefan Berge
Eh... just one more thing. I am not a real newbie, but I don´t type in
Terminal more than necessary. So, I got some help with the linux
commands here: http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fileman.html

Deleting grubenv was no problem (rm grubenv after doing sudo su). Then I typed
sudo gedit to open gedit but after erasing the two lines recordfail=1 and
save_env recordfail, I couldn´t save it, I got the complaint that I was trying
to write to a read-only media.
I don´t know what I did wrong, but as the rm command had already worked, I got
around this problem by doing this:
I tested "save as" and that worked, and saved my new config-file as grub2.cfg.
Then I erased grub.cfg (rm grub.cfg) and renamed grub2.cfg to grub.cfg (mv
grub2.cfg grub.cfg). It worked.
Then restart and...
Perfect! Opened a few applications and with all of them running, pushed the
restart-button on my computer (a really ugly shutdown).
The computer booted up, and everything works perfectly. I have done it over and
over again, no problem. Thanks again.

I had the same problem with a 32-bit install, but after following mr
Bergman´s "recepy" I can "kill" the computer by pushing the restart
button, and it boots up perfectly again. So a clean shutdown is no
longer needed. Thank you, mr Bergman!
