[Bug 172509] cups: printing to lp0 stopped working on Gutsy

2007-11-27 Thread Stephan Bourduas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cupsys

Cups got broken sometime in the last few weeks presumably after a cups
upgrade (I'm using Gutsy). All of a sudden, I just couldn't print to my
HP LaserJet 2100M anymore. All the jobs just get stuck in the queue and
never print. I get the following in my /etc/cups/error_log:

D [28/Nov/2007:06:22:29 +] cupsdAcceptClient: 21 from localhost (Domain)
D [28/Nov/2007:06:22:29 +] cupsdReadClient: 21 POST / HTTP/1.1
D [28/Nov/2007:06:22:29 +] cupsdAuthorize: No authentication data provided.
D [28/Nov/2007:06:22:29 +] Get-Jobs ipp://localhost:631/printers/hp2100m
D [28/Nov/2007:06:22:29 +] cupsdProcessIPPRequest: 21 status_code=0
(successful-ok)
D [28/Nov/2007:06:22:29 +] cupsdCloseClient: 21

I've been searching around and can't seem to find a fix for this. I
tried deleting and then adding my printer from scratch using the KDE
print system interface, and I still get the same behavior.

[Bug 137432] Re: [nvidia-glx-legacy] nvidia module won't load with 2.6.22-10 kernel (gutsy)

2007-09-08 Thread Stephan Bourduas
I just finished upgrading my kernel to 2.6.22.11.12 and I could not get
nvidia to load no matter what I did. I tried depmod like before, and it
didn't work.  I then did:

$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-glx
$ sudo modprobe nvidia

to no avail. Just to be sure, I tried depmod again, which resulted in
the same error as before.

I then booted into the 2.6.22.10 kernel and the nvidia module loaded fine,
without the need for depmod:
$ uname -a
Linux atlas 2.6.22-10-386 #1 Wed Aug 22 07:43:24 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

$ lsmod | grep nv
nvidia   4714036  22
i2c_core   25104  1 nvidia
agpgart33584  2 nvidia,intel_agp

$ dmesg | grep -i nvidia
[ 53.241245] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
[ 53.524608] NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 Kernel Module 1.0-9639 Mon Apr
16 20:20:06 PDT 2007

$ dpkg -l nvidia-glx | grep ^ii
ii  nvidia-glx 1:1.0.9639+2.6.22.3-11.3 NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org
driver

So it seems that the nvidia-glx works properly for the -10 kernel, but
not the -11.

[Bug 138095] [wishlist] use /etc/env.d and env-update to generate global environment variables

2007-09-07 Thread Stephan Bourduas
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure where I should be reporting this "bug". I'm a Gentoo user
who has recently installed Kubuntu on 2 of my machines, and I feel that
Gentoo manages global environment variables in a very efficient per-
package manner. All packages that wish to set environment variables
globally put a file in /etc/env.d. A script called "env-update"
extracts all the settings in /etc/env.d/* and puts them in
/etc/profile.env, which is in turn sourced from /etc/profile.

To illustrate why this is useful, consider the installation of the
"lesspipe.sh" script on Ubuntu. I made a .deb package for lesspipe.sh
(http://www-zeuthen.desy.de/~friebel/unix/lesspipe.html) that provides
input filtering capabilities for "less" for all sorts of filetypes. In
order to get it to work, two environment variables need to be set,
namely:

LESS=-R -M --shift 5
LESSOPEN=|lesspipe.sh %s

I would like my .deb package to set these variables globally so that the
default systemwide behavior of less is to use lesspipe.sh (Gentoo does
this by default). At the moment, the only way I can figure out how to
set the LESS variables is to add them to /etc/bash.bashrc. I can easily
do this with the "postinst" script in the deb package, but removing the
declarations when the package is uninstalled becomes problematic. The
most elegant solution is to use the /etc/env.d directory to set per
package env variables as done on Gentoo.

In fact, the EnvironmentVariables wiki entry
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnvironmentVariables) has a link in
the references section to the Gentoo Environment Variables page
(http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=2&chap=5#doc_chap2).

There may be a reason why Debian/Ubuntu doesn't use the /etc/env.d
method that I'm unaware of, if not, I think the Gentoo way would be a
more flexible way to control environment variables. Using this method
to control environment variables would require simply copying the env-
update script and modifying /etc/profile to source /etc/profile.env.

[Bug 137432] Re: [nvidia-glx-legacy] nvidia module won't load with 2.6.22-10 kernel (gutsy)

2007-09-05 Thread Stephan Bourduas
I installed nvidia-glx for the 2.6.22 kernel and I got the same error.
The 'modprobe nvidia' just refuses to work. I downgraded it to
2.6.20.5-16, and it works properly. So as it stands, nvidia-glx and
nvidia-glx-legacy don't seem to work for the 2.6.22 kernel and my
GeForce 4 MX 440 card.

The last time I checked the nvidia site, I read that the GeForce4 MX 440 needed
the legacy drivers. Check out this page:
http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce4.html

However, I just went through the NVidia "wizard" to select my driver, and it
took me here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-9755.html

Strangely, the supported products list
(http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_18897.html) doesn't show the GeForce 4
MX 440. Maybe Nvidia have moved the MX440 from the legacy drivers
package to the normal one?

I'm not in a position to try it right now, but will do it later and get
back to you.

> Additionally can you indicate whether you have ever manually installed
binary drivers in the past or followed any guides on installing drivers?

My system is a brand new install from about 2 weeks ago. I haven't
compiled any custom kernels or modules. I had originally installed
Feisty and then upgraded to Gutsy, using the stock kernels and drivers.

[Bug 137439] irq problems: 2.6.22 kernel won't boot without 'irqpoll' option.

2007-09-04 Thread Stephan Bourduas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-10-386

When I boot with the 2.6.22 Gutsy kernel, I get:

[ 53.219986] irq 9: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)

[   53.224066] Disabling IRQ #9

[   53.298216] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/100

Booting with 'irqpoll' fixes the problem, but I don't see why I would need to
use this option since the 2.6.20 Feisty kernel boots fine without the irqpoll
option.

2007-09-04 Thread Stephan Bourduas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-legacy

The nvidia module won't load with the 2.6.22-10 kernel. I just get an
error message like "error inserting module" when typing 'modprobe
nvidia'. The kernel version I'm using is linux-image-2.6.22-10. The
module works properly for the 2.6.20 kernels.

[Bug 135911] Re: [gutsy] request for Tex Gyre fonts to be added to texlive-fonts-extra

2007-08-31 Thread Stephan Bourduas
Thanks for the feedback Norbert. As you say, the fonts are easy to
install, but I prefer to use .deb packages so that my system doesn't get
polluted. I've created my own .deb file that installs the fonts in
/usr/share/texmf; I was going to inquire about contributing my package
to Debian/Ubuntu, but I guess you beat me to it.
