[Bug 138095] [wishlist] use /etc/env.d and env-update to generate global environment variables
Public bug reported: I'm not sure where I should be reporting this "bug". I'm a Gentoo user who has recently installed Kubuntu on 2 of my machines, and I feel that Gentoo manages global environment variables in a very efficient per- package manner. All packages that wish to set environment variables globally put a file in /etc/env.d. A script called "env-update" extracts all the settings in /etc/env.d/* and puts them in /etc/profile.env, which is in turn sourced from /etc/profile. To illustrate why this is useful, consider the installation of the "lesspipe.sh" script on Ubuntu. I made a .deb package for lesspipe.sh (http://www-zeuthen.desy.de/~friebel/unix/lesspipe.html) that provides input filtering capabilities for "less" for all sorts of filetypes. In order to get it to work, two environment variables need to be set, namely: LESS=-R -M --shift 5 LESSOPEN=|lesspipe.sh %s I would like my .deb package to set these variables globally so that the default systemwide behavior of less is to use lesspipe.sh (Gentoo does this by default). At the moment, the only way I can figure out how to set the LESS variables is to add them to /etc/bash.bashrc. I can easily do this with the "postinst" script in the deb package, but removing the declarations when the package is uninstalled becomes problematic. The most elegant solution is to use the /etc/env.d directory to set per package env variables as done on Gentoo. In fact, the EnvironmentVariables wiki entry (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnvironmentVariables) has a link in the references section to the Gentoo Environment Variables page (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=2&chap=5#doc_chap2). There may be a reason why Debian/Ubuntu doesn't use the /etc/env.d method that I'm unaware of, if not, I think the Gentoo way would be a more flexible way to control environment variables. Using this method to control environment variables would require simply copying the env- update script and modifying /etc/profile to source /etc/profile.env. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [wishlist] use /etc/env.d and env-update to generate global environment variables https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138095 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Maybe Nvidia have moved the MX440 from the legacy drivers package to the normal one? > Does switching to nvidia-glx make things any better? I'm not in a position to try it right now, but will do it later and get back to you. > Additionally can you indicate whether you have ever manually installed binary drivers in the past or followed any guides on installing drivers? My system is a brand new install from about 2 weeks ago. I haven't compiled any custom kernels or modules. I had originally installed Feisty and then upgraded to Gutsy, using the stock kernels and drivers. -- [nvidia-glx-legacy] nvidia module won't load with 2.6.22-10 kernel (gutsy) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/137432 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-legacy The nvidia module won't load with the 2.6.22-10 kernel. [Bug 135911] Re: [gutsy] request for Tex Gyre fonts to be added to texlive-fonts-extra
Thanks for the feedback Norbert. As you say, the fonts are easy to install, but I prefer to use .deb packages so that my system doesn't get polluted. I've created my own .deb file that installs the fonts in /usr/share/texmf; I was going to inquire about contributing my package to Debian/Ubuntu, but I guess you beat me to it.
