This bug is in 12.04 as well. [Bug 987933] Re: 10de:0407 Ubuntu 12.04 shutdown hangs with proprietary nVidia driver
I had the same issue on a new Lenovo Thinkpad x220. I had always used sudo halt to shut down the system and discovered that it actually halts the system instead of powering it off.
