Right. The difference is that python3-requests is Priority: optional; it's
included in effectively all of our bootable images, but it's not in the base
system.

Yes, there's a takeaway here that we look at priority mismatches much too
late in the cycle, when it's late to try to take action on anything we find
that looks wrong. I will take the action to put this on the release team's
checklist for beta, to give the team more runway in the future.

[Bug 2083665] Re: ubuntu-pro-client has an unnecessary dependency on python3-pkg-resources

2024-10-04 Thread Steve Langasek
> Ok, I can remove the dependency, but we still depend on setuptools
(which on its turn depends on python3-pkg-resources).

Where is this dependency? I do not currently see a runtime dep from
ubuntu-pro-client to python3-setuptools. Is it somehow masked by the
python3-pkg-resources dep?

There is actually another dep that would hold python3-pkg-resources in
the Priority: important base set, which is:

netplan.io -> python3-rich -> python3-pygments -> python3-pkg-resources

I did overlook this and don't know whether it can be dropped for
oracular but I think we should still look at both.

This is worth trying to get done for oracular, because python3-pkg-
resources has started pulling in a lot more dependencies in this
release.

Also it doesn't matter if these characters are part of all the character
sets if they're passed through to the client terminal in the wrong
ENCODING. non ASCII characters almost entirely do not have the same
binary representation in UTF-8 as in other character sets, including
these.

Also this bug claims the package is ignoring the frontend variable. It
is not doing that; nothing in your output shows ncurses being invoked in
non interactive mode.

Your problem is simply that if the package can't prompt, the
installation can't succeed.

You misunderstand Debian / debconf policy here. Package installation is
expected to work under non interactive mode, IF THERE IS A SENSIBLE
DEFAULT. In this situation, your system is broken with respect to the
bootloader, and there is no sensible way to proceed to the package being
"installed" in a meaningful sense without admin intervention.

[Bug 2081940] Re: package shim-signed 1.51.3+15.7-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: 已安装 shim-signed 软件包 post-installation 脚本 子进程返回错误状态 127

2024-09-25 Thread Steve Langasek
shim-signed Depends: grub2-common (>= 2.04-1ubuntu24). grub2-common in
jammy Depends: grub-common (= 2.06-2ubuntu7.2). grub-common contains
/usr/lib/grub/grub-multi-install.

Please show the output of 'dpkg -l grub-common' on your system.

Your bug report also shows that this was originally an Ubuntu 22.04
(jammy) system and that this is what you are currently running. Yet you
are installing shim-signed 1.51.3+15.7-0ubuntu1, which is a security
update that was published a year ago. That's not a good sign regarding
the security of the system; but it also means there should not have been
any opportunity to /usr/lib/grub/grub-multi-install to have gone
temporarily missing as part of an upgrade.

[Bug 2080785] Re: GRUB menu doesn't show with os-prober entries on BIOS

2024-09-17 Thread Steve Langasek
20 years ago, I promise you this was the behavior of grub on BIOS
machines running Ubuntu. As Mate says, the current behavior on UEFI is
a concession to the limitations of UEFI.

Pam does not see the keyboard, only input text from the application
driving it. What Ubuntu flavor are you using? This determines what
package implements your lock screen.

It is very unclear here what you mean by 'service'. From this
description I would have expected to see the addition of a systemd
service unit to the package, but there is none. The changelog is
inadequate for an SRU to explain to users what is being done.

If the header is dropped this build failure could maybe be fixed by just
dropping the reference to the header as well. But there is a different
build failure in Debian (Debian bug #1066535) and the package is removed
from Debian testing, so this is definitely a candidate for removal.

This is the noble version. So I don't know where this 23.10 branding is
coming from for you.

What version of the base-files package do you have installed?

The login screen itself is not from Plymouth. This would normally be
from gdm or equivalent.

[Bug 1597017] Re: mount rules grant excessive permissions

2024-09-03 Thread Steve Beattie
Actual fixed versions for this issue are still sitting in focal-proposed
and jammy-proposed. However, we did a no-change rebuild ofthe current
versions in the respective updates pockets to the security pocket, so
that the version in proposed could be published first in the updates
pocket, but leaving people who experience possible issues the
opportunity for an easy downgrade path to the prior version (via apt
install apparmor/jammy-security or apparmor/focal-security as the case
may be).

[Bug 2073677] Re: Remove dmraid from oracular?

2024-08-28 Thread Steve Langasek
Originally I was going to make the argument that three replacements for
dmraid are not on-disk compatible, and therefore the Debian removal
rationale is disingenuous for anyone who is upgrading a system that
relies on this.

However, the fact that this has already been broken for two LTS cycles
without any Ubuntu developers noticing and having no capacity to test,
and we've effectively had only one user bug report about it, gives lie
to the idea that we can let this coast without upstream support and
without impact to our users.

So I am +1 now for removal; it's better to have a clean drop.

We should also add an ubuntu-release-upgrade quirk to block users from
upgrading to a release that will not support their disk. Whether that
is added to the upgrader going back to upgrades to jammy, or whether we
SRU the udev fix to jammy and noble and only block upgrades to oracular
and later, I have no opinion.

2024-08-28 Thread Steve Langasek
The only thing is, installing updates through the GUI default upgrader
is NOT supposed to accept solutions that require removing packages. So
this really needs to be tracked down and fixed. I don't think there's
anything further to be done in gnome-shell.

[Bug 2077232] Re: Security update 42.9-0ubuntu2.2 uninstalls GDM

2024-08-19 Thread Steve Langasek
Ok, sorry for overlooking.

Here's what it should look like:

$ apt policy gnome-shell
gnome-shell:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 42.9-0ubuntu2.2
  Version table:
 42.9-0ubuntu2.2 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy-updates/main amd64 Packages
500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy-security/main amd64 Packages
 42.0-2ubuntu1 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/main amd64 Packages
$

The gnome-shell update is published in jammy-updates and in jammy-
security, but does not show up in your apt policy output. You somehow
have out of date package indices for these repositories - but you DID
have an up-to-date package index for i386, which is what caused gnome-
shell-common to be visible.

How did you trigger the actual update? Was this through the update-
manager GUI? Did it offer to install gnome-shell-common for you and
remove the other packages? Or did you use apt directly to do this?

2024-08-19 Thread Steve Haynes
I only noticed the messages that appeared on the terminal

As a general rule, my laptop is always on the charger because the battery
doesn't hold up very well

I went back to '39' to fix the problem but went back and forth between '39'
and '40' to double check

I only get the messages to the terminal on '40'

Hope this helps

Steve

2024-08-19 Thread Steve Langasek
Upgrade: gnome-shell-common:amd64 (42.9-0ubuntu2.1, 42.9-0ubuntu2.2)
Remove: gnome-shell:amd64 (42.9-0ubuntu2.1),

This shows only gnome-shell-common being installed and gnome-shell being
removed. What does `apt policy` show for these two packages?

This looks like a firewall problem on the s390x autopkgtest runners.

I see that you did a baseline retest with migration-reference/0 and that
one landed on a runner in the bos01 region:
https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/results/autopkgtest-
jammy/jammy/s390x/l/livecd-rootfs/20240812_102717_e29f6@/log.gz

The failures appear to be in the bos03 region:

[Bug 2076150] [NEW] apparmor apport python plugin: "invalid escape sequence '\('"

Hello Heinrich, or anyone else affected,

Accepted u-boot-pic64gx into noble-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/u-boot-
pic64gx/2024.06-0ubuntu1~24.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the
-proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
noble to verification-done-noble. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-noble. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in

[Bug 2072643] Re: Embedded camera using camera sensors ov02e10 and ov08a10 doesn't work: missing kernel driver

2024-07-19 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

  [SRU Justfication]

  [Impact]

  Device camera won't work.

  [Fix]

The current version in -proposed pocket may skip installation of built
kernel module ov02e10 and ov08a10. The fix is to use fixed index numbers
  in dkms.conf.

  [Test Case]

Install the dkms and check if ov02e10.ko and ov08a10.ko have been
  installed to /lib/modules//updates/dkms.

  [Where problems could occur]

- No.
+ Minimal, as this is restoring driver modules that were previously
+ installed prior to the regression.

  [Other Info]

While this happens to ipu6-drivers/{oracualr,noble} only, proposed fixes
  are therefore nominated accordingly.

[Bug 2072490] Re: [needs-packaging] U-Boot for Microchip PIC64GX

2024-07-12 Thread Steve Langasek
arch/riscv/cpu/mpfs/cpu.c, arch/riscv/cpu/mpfs/dram.c,
arch/riscv/cpu/pic64gx/cpu.c, arch/riscv/cpu/pic64gx/dram.c are new
files in u-boot-pic64gx-20240624 listed as 'Copyright (C) 2018, Bin Meng
'. Please include this in debian/copyright.

arch/riscv/dts/mpfs-tysom-m.dts lists Copyright (C) 2020-2022 - Aldec
which is not in debian/copyright. (It also lists Copyright (C) 2022-2023
- Conor Dooley but we can presume this is
incorrect and should be Microchip, which is listed in debian/copyright.)

I also see that this source builds an Arch: all binary package. The
convention is that the u-boot binary packages declare the architectures
that they are used on (riscv64); we don't want to install u-boot-pic64gx
on an amd64 system.

Ok to leave drivers/dma/MCD_tasks.c in the source.

And diffing debian/copyright against the Debian v2023.07 package instead
of the latest looks sensible, so no changes needed there.

That leaves the above three issues, plus the upstream version problem.

[Bug 2072490] Re: [needs-packaging] U-Boot for Microchip PIC64GX

2024-07-11 Thread Steve Langasek
u-boot-pic64gx_2024.06

well, somewhat unfortunate wrt license review that this doesn't align
with any of the u-boot upstream tags; I guess I'll compare with
2024.04...

The u-boot source package has in debian/copyright:

Files-Excluded:
  drivers/dma/MCD_tasks.c

u-boot-pic64gx does not. Do you know why this was excluded in the
Debian u-boot package, and why it would be ok to ship it in the pic64gx
build? If not, I recommend that you follow the u-boot source package's
lead to avoid any doubts.

There's also an 8kloc diff between the debian/copyright in u-boot
2024.01+dfsg-1ubuntu5 and the one in u-boot-pic64gx 20240624-0ubuntu1.
That is a rather significant barrier to using u-boot as a base for
review of correct licensing / copyright declaration of the new package.
Can you explain this difference?

Also, speaking of '20240624-0ubuntu1' - note that this is not consistent
with the versioning scheme used by the u-boot source package; 20240624
sorts >> the .MM style version numbers. This will make it difficult
to later build the u-boot-pic64gx binary out of the u-boot source
package due to inconsistent version numbers. I suggest you avoid this
now by packaging this instead as 2024.06.24-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 2044104] Re: [UBUNTU 20.04] chzdev -e is rebuilding initramfs even with zdev:early=0 set

2024-07-11 Thread Steve Langasek
oracular has s390-tools 2.33.1-0ubuntu3. Is there any further change
needed on that package, or should that task be marked resolved?

[Bug 2067672] Re: [SRU] Openssl copyright/changelog.Debian.gz file points at non-existent location

2024-07-10 Thread Steve Langasek
+ * Fixed the symbolic links with libssl3t64. (LP: #2067672)

This is insufficiently clear as a changelog entry for an SRU. I am
adjusting this to:

+ * Fixed the symbolic link target for the changelog and copyright
files. (LP: #2067672)

Otherwise, this is straightforward and I am sponsoring to the noble SRU
queue.

However, in terms of SRU policy, I don't think it makes sense for us to
release an SRU of openssl to all users' systems that changes only this.
Therefore I am tagging this bug 'block-proposed-noble' so that it will
not actually be released to noble-updates until there are further
changes to be landed.

** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

- * In OEM projects, our customers need check every copyright of
- packages.
+ Due to the t64 transition, the changelog.Debian.gz and copyright
+ symlinks in various binary packages built from openssl source are
+ dangling symlinks, because /usr/share/doc/libssl3 no longer exists.
+ This gives users an error when trying to look at these files, and is an
+ impediment to inspecting the copyright status of the packages in an
+ installed system.

  [ Test Plan ]

- * list the openssl or libssl-dev to check if symbol link is valid.

Per the above comment this is reported to be fixed in 3.2.2-1ubuntu1
which is in oracular-proposed, so setting the status to 'fix committed'.
