[Bug 1804541] Re: shotwell does not categorize MTS files into events

2022-05-28 Thread Steve Chadsey
This is still an issue in 20.04.4, shotwell 0.30.10-0ubuntu0.1

The workaround of adding the MTS file to a mounted drive under /DCIM
fails to import it to an event date corresponding to the recorded date
of the video. Instead, it is imported for the current date.

[Bug 1830416] [NEW] Firefox shows multiple master password prompts on startup when user has multiple home tabs that require passwords

2019-05-24 Thread Steve Chadsey
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS

I have two URLs configured for Firefox startup. They are for different
sites. Each one will go to a login page. I have a master password
configured in Firefox. When I start Firefox, two tabs will open to the
two URLs, and up until recently, I was prompted once for my master
password. Once I entered it, my credentials would auto-fill on both
tabs as expected. Today I noticed that on Firefox startup, I was
getting two master password prompts. Although entering the master
password for one would suffice, it is annoying to have to close out the
second one. Also, the second one often pops up and steals focus from
the first when I am entering the master password (depending on the
relative page load times of the two tabs).

I was running Firefox 66.0.5+build1-0ubuntu0.18.04.1 when I first
noticed this. I updated to 67.0+build2-0ubuntu0.18.04.1 and the problem
persists.

[Bug 1827677] [NEW] Resume from suspend: nothing on display, unable to login

2019-05-03 Thread Steve Chadsey
Public bug reported:

This is 4.15.0-47-generic on a Dell Latitude 5580. Closing the laptop
lid will suspend the system, and opening it will resume, and I normally
get my xfce session or the xscreensaver unlock dialog. I recently
suspended in this manner, but upon opening the laptop lid, nothing came
up on the display. The power button was on, and the keyboard backlight
responded to keypresses. Ctrl-Alt-PrtScr-[REISUB] had no discernible
effect (PrtScr because I don't have SysRq on this keyboard). Neither
did Ctrl-Alt-Del or Ctrl-Alt-F1 for a console. I needed to poweroff and
poweron the laptop which of course caused the suspended session state to
be lost.

[Bug 1812941] [NEW] gnome-photos doesn't show any photos

2019-01-22 Thread Steve Chadsey
Public bug reported:

I launched gnome-photos for the first time (ever) after installing
3.28.0-1 on Xubuntu 18.04.1. Although the application indicates that
pictures from my Pictures folder will appear, none actually appear.
Clicking on the "Pictures folder" link opens up a file manager window to
~/Pictures in which I have several assorted images (mainly JPG format).
I couldn't find a settings or preferences dialog. The application
doesn't appear to provide the capability to do much of anything,
actually.

I couldn't figure out how to run the application in debug/verbose mode.
The only hints I have are these messages in syslog when I launch the
application:

I don't consider this to be a very viable workaround. The videos are on
the camera memory card and so one would have to either copy them onto
another USB drive with the suggested DCIM folder, or copy/move them from
their native location on the camera filesystem to another location on
the same filesystem. Either way, it's inconvenient, and not something
that someone who regularly imports videos would want to suffer through
more than a couple times.

[Bug 1810055] [NEW] Resume fails when suspending laptop with headphones plugged in

2018-12-29 Thread Steve Chadsey
Public bug reported:

This is Xubuntu 18.04.1, kernel 4.15.0-43-generic on a Dell Latitude
5580.

I've found that if I have headphones plugged in when I suspend the
system (either by closing the laptop lid, or by using Whisker menu >
Power button > Suspend), then the system does not resume properly. It
appears that a full boot occurs: Dell logo appears, followed by the Grub
menu, and after selecting the boot option and booting, I get a new login
session instead of my suspended one.

I tried some combinations of booting, suspending and resuming with the
headphones attached or detached. The 'yes'/'no' indicates whether the
headphones were plugged in when I performed the operation. 'ok'
indicates that the resume succeeded: after authenticating to
xscreensaver, my previous session was resumed.

  Boot: no Suspend: no Resume: noResult: ok
  Boot: no Suspend: no Resume: yes Result: ok
  Boot: no Suspend: yesResume: noResult: fail
  Boot: no Suspend: yesResume: yes Result: fail

  Boot: yes Suspend: noResume: noResult: ok
  Boot: yes Suspend: noResume: yes Result: ok
  Boot: yes Suspend: yes Resume: noResult: fail
  Boot: yes Suspend: yes Resume: yes Result: fail

(Note: for each case, the suspend was done via Whisker menu > Power
button > Suspend)

The common factor for failure is suspending when the headphones are
plugged in.

[Bug 1809916] [NEW] kazam hangs when microphone input is enabled for screencast

2018-12-27 Thread Steve Chadsey
Public bug reported:

When I attempt to save a screencast with kazam, and the "Sound from
microphone" option is checked, then kazam will hang when I finish the
recording.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a terminal and run kazam
2. In the GUI, select:
* Screencast
* Any capture area (Fullscreen, All Screens, Window, Area)
* Select "Sound from microphone"
3. Click "Capture"
  a. The Notification area will show a video camera icon with a red "recording"
indicator
4. After a second or two, right click on the notification icon and click
"Finish recording"

At this point, nothing happens. What should occur is a dialog box
asking the user to either edit the recording or save for later.
Clicking on the notification icon does not bring up any additional
options.  'Ctrl-C' in the terminal does not terminate the application;
it needs to be sent a SIGTERM.

[Bug 1804541] [NEW] shotwell does not categorize MTS files into events

2018-11-21 Thread Steve Chadsey
Public bug reported:

I have a Sony HDR-CX675 which produces MTS video files. When I add them
to shotwell (version 0.28.2), the video files are added to the "No
Event" category (if that is the right term). Other video file types
such as MOV files are categorized into the correct event based on the
media creation time. If I play any of my MTS videos with parole, the
date and time are displayed on the video (I don't know why parole does
this, but that's a separate issue. The point is that parole is able to
figure out the date/time of the video, so shotwell should, too).

[Bug 1763594] Re: xhci hangs; reset results in NULL pointer dereference

2018-11-14 Thread Steve Chadsey
I've been getting similar disconnects on a Dell Latitude 5580 that is
connected to a Dell D6000 docking station via USB-C. I'm also using
DisplayLink driver version 4.4.24
(https://www.displaylink.com/downloads/ubuntu) in order to connect to
two external displays. With Ubuntu 17.10 I was not seeing any
disconnects. With 18.04 I see at least one per day where the external
monitors go dark, and these messages in syslog:

I am still seeing disconnects, and they are more frequent than before:

I do regularly suspend/resume this laptop, but the latest disconnects
have happened without a prior resume.

[Bug 1796773] [NEW] Firefox homepage setting lost, changed to "about:blank" after update from 16.04 to 18.04.1

2018-10-08 Thread Steve Chadsey
Public bug reported:

After updating my system from Xubuntu 16.04 to 18.04.1 (via "do-release-
upgrade"), my firefox opens a blank page instead of my home page when I
launch the application.

Before:
$ egrep 'browser.startup' prefs.js-old
user_pref("browser.startup.homepage",
"https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#inbox";);
user_pref("browser.startup.homepage_override.buildID", "20180316021607");
user_pref("browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone", "59.0.1");

After:
$ egrep 'browser.startup' prefs.js-new
user_pref("browser.startup.homepage", "about:blank");
user_pref("browser.startup.homepage_override.buildID", "20181002130007");
user_pref("browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone", "62.0.3");

To the best of my recollection I did not make this change in the Firefox
preferences UI.

[Bug 1586528] Re: Avahi-daemon withdraws address record

I don't have a workaround but the following is what I use to help recover. It
pings my gateway periodically, and if it can't it attempts to restart
networking.

In /etc/crontab:

/usr/local/bin/check_reset_network.sh:

  echo "Failed to ping gw $gw"
  echo "Trying again in 20s"

  out=$(ping -c 5 $gw 2>&1)

  if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then
echo "Failed to ping gw $gw"
echo "Restarting networking"

sudo service network-manager restart

echo "Waiting 20s to recheck network"
sleep 20

[Bug 1586528] Re: Avahi-daemon withdraws address record

2017-04-05 Thread Steve Chadsey
I am having the same issue, not in a VM. Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS. eth0 is a wired
network controller. I've attached a tar file containing:
- relevant syslog messages
- output of 'ethtool eht0'
- output of 'ethtool -i eth0'
- output of 'lspci -vvv'

I'm not sure what other information would be relevant but am happy to
provide it on request, either when the system is in the problem state or
otherwise.

I recover the situation by clicking the "Wired connection 1" in the
network indicator panel.

Clearly there are at least 3 problems here:
1. The network connection is lost
2. There is no reason given for the loss of connection
3. The connection is not automatically recovered

[Bug 1301447] [NEW] evince displays only first page of certain PDFs

2014-04-02 Thread Steve Chadsey
Public bug reported:

I have recently found that evince 3.6.1 (3.6.1-1ubuntu) will only display
the first page of certain PDF files. I can open the files in Adobe Reader
XI under Windows 7 Enterprise. In this manner I can confirm that the
documents have more than one page.

Evince properly handles the majority of PDF documents that I come across.
It appears that the files that evince "thinks" have only 1 page are PDF
version 1.7 according to file(1).

Here is an example. The "Manuals for HP 6125XLG Ethernet Blade Switch"
document listing [1] on hp.com lists several PDF files. "HP 6125XLG
Blade Switch Installation Guide" [2] opens correctly and evince shows
it has 33 pages (which Adobe Reader agrees with). Firefox has saved a
temporary copy of it, and file(1) shows:

  $ file /tmp/Download-2.pdf
  /tmp/Download-2.pdf: PDF document, version 1.6

The "R2306-HP 6125XLG Blade Switch Command References" document [3]
opens in evince, but evince shows that it has only 1 page (see file
"evince-onepage.png"). Adobe Reader shows that it has 15 titles of
various lengths. The first title, "About the HP 6125XLG Blade Command
Refernces" is 8 pages.

file(1) for this pdf shows:

  $ file /tmp/emr_na-c03933238-1-3.pdf
  /tmp/emr_na-c03933238-1-3.pdf: PDF document, version 1.7

Perhaps it is these "composite" PDF files that evince can't handle.

Try right-click on the workspace switcher, then Properties. Under

some number greater than 1. This is with Precise - I haven't tried
under Quantal.

2012 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

During the package installation, I noticed that there was an error
rebuilding the nonfree nvidia module. It appeared to be bug #993506.
So in addition to the kernel update, I have also updated the nvidia-current
and nvidia-settings packages from the ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates PPA.

As I am not sure as to the repeatability of this bug, I will need to
run this kernel for a couple of weeks to get an idea of how well the
suspend/resume works. However, a quick suspend/resume smoke test worked,
which is a good sign.

** Description changed:

  On my HP 8560w laptop, I have been using suspend/resume daily for about
- two weeks without issue. On 2012-09-15 I docked the laptop and pressed the
- power button. Normally the session resumes with the screensaver appearing
- on the LCD. This time, the LCD was on what appeared to be a VT and was
- showing syslog messages. The external monitors showed the screensaver.
- I was able to type in my password from the laptop keyboard, and the
- desktop session appeared as it was when I had suspended it the day before.
- However, I could not move the mouse nor enter any keystrokes using the
- external or built-in keyboard/pointer. I did not attempt remote login
- over the network.

[Bug 1031454] [NEW] Upper/Bottom workspace keyboard shortcuts have no effect

2012-07-31 Thread Steve Chadsey
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Release:12.04

xfce4-settings:
  Installed: 4.8.3-1ubuntu3
  Candidate: 4.8.3-1ubuntu3

In xubuntu 12.04, any keyboard shortcut I assign to "Upper workspace"
and "Bottom workspace" has no effect.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Set up multiple workspaces such that there is one above another.

2. Open the window manager settings window:
  Applications Menu -> Settings -> Settings Manager -> Window Manager ->
Keyboard

3. Scroll down to "Upper workspace"

4. Double click the item

5. Set the keyboard shortcut to some unused combination.

6. Click "Close" on the Window Manager window

7. Switch to a workspace that is below another one.

8. Try the new keyboard shortcut.

Expected result:

The active workspace is switched to the one that is above the one in
which the keyboard shortcut was used.

Actual result:
==
The active workspace does not change.

This does not affect the "Left workspace" and "Right workspace" shortcuts.

2010-02-10 Thread Steve Chadsey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Symptoms

I have 14 workspaces. I would like to assign a keyboard shortcut to
access all of them. I am able to do so for desktops #1-12 via System ->
Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts. In the Keyboard Shortcuts manager,
there are predefined actions for switching to workspaces 1-12 ("Switch
to workspace 1", "Switch to workspace 2", etc.). However, there are no
actions for workspaces numbered higher than 12.

If a user configures more than 12 workspaces, the "Keyboard Shortcuts"
utility should be dynamically updated to reflect that.

A workaround is:
1. Install the "wmctrl" package
2. Open the Keyboard Shortcuts utility via System -> Preferences ->
   Keyboard Shortcuts.
3. Click "Add".
4. Name: Switch to workspace 13
   Command: wmctrl -s 12 (the desktop numbering is 0-based)
5. Click "Apply".
6. Scroll down to the "Custom Shortcuts" section.
7. Apply a keyboard shortcut to the new action.

Steps to reproduce the problem
==
1. Right-click on the workspace panel and select "Preferences".
2. Configure more than 12 workspaces.
3. Open the Keyboard Shortcuts utility via System -> Preferences ->
   Keyboard Shortcuts. Note that there are no actions for any workspaces
   numbered greater than 12.

[Bug 409539] Re: audacity window location not remembered with status icon plugin

2009-08-13 Thread Steve Chadsey
I just now realized that this defect report is invalid because I got
"audacious" mixed up with "audacity". This has nothing to do with
audacity. Shall I close this report and submit a new one?

[Bug 409539] [NEW] audacity window location not remembered with status icon plugin

2009-08-05 Thread Steve Chadsey
Public bug reported:

Environment
===
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

audacity:
  Installed: 1.3.7-2ubuntu1

Symptoms

I use audacity with the "Status Icon 0.5" plugin. This plugin "provides
a status icon, placed in the system tray area of the window manager."
When I click on the status icon, the audacity window will show or hide
itself. When showing, the window reappears in the last position I moved
it to before it was hidden.

I did an "apt-get update" followed by "apt-get upgrade" this morning.
(See dpkg.log for the list of packages that changed). I rebooted the
system.

Now, when I click the status icon to show the audacity application,
the window always appears near the top-left corner of the screen.
"xwininfo" shows:

  Absolute upper-left X:  25
  Absolute upper-left Y:  43
  Relative upper-left X:  5
  Relative upper-left Y:  23
  Width: 275
  Height: 116
  Depth: 24

It doesn't matter if I drag the window to my preferred location and hide
it with the status icon; the window reappears in the same upper-left spot
each time.

I don't think this is a bug with the audacity program.
