[Bug 686084] Re: Revelation should lock file upon suspend

2012-09-15 Thread Steven Wagner
To expand on this, it doesnt seem to have anything to do with suspend or
hibernate. The 'lock file when inactive' feature just seems to not be
active at all. I have verified this for Revelation 0.4.11 on ubuntu
Precise.

worth noting here...

[Bug 683957] Re: guest ata controller becomes unresponsive

2011-03-14 Thread Steven Wagner
It in fact did not fix the problem. The problem was that writeback cache is off
by default in Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS, but the default was on in Ubuntu Server
8.04 LTS. It was a backwards incompatible change that was not documented, and
it took months of my time to resolve. The solution was to specify,
driver name='qemu' type='qcow2' cache='writeback'/
on all of my guest config files.

[Bug 671163] Re: win2k3 guest has blank screen and high cpu on first boot

2010-12-10 Thread Steven Wagner

It appears that writeback caching was turned off in qemu for qcow2 in June 2009
because qcow2 was fast. Then a new patch was applied in July 2010 that made
qcow2 slow again! I was able to solve my problems by turning on writeback
cache.

driver name='qemu' type='qcow2' cache='writeback'/

However, this creates a huge migration issue for anyone upgrading from
Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS. If they use qcow2 files with qemu-
kvm, their virtualization guests will fail and start having disk IO
failures if they are not aware that they now need to turn on writeback
caching manually.

[Bug 671163] Re: win2k3 guest has blank screen and high cpu on first boot

2010-12-06 Thread Steven Wagner
I tried to do another win2k3 install, this time via libvirt xml file. I
used a minimal config. The install was immediately running very slow,
possibly due to using a qcow disk file and/or not having used any virtio
config. It ran so slow though with the disk io wait, that it brought the
load average way up on the server node, and it caused ALL of my other
linux virt instances to get CPU Stuck msgs, forcing me to reload the
entire virtualization node. Bad. With all these issues, im going to have
to go with windows virtualization does not work on ubuntu lucid. It used
to work on ubuntu hardy.

[Bug 671163] Re: win2k3 guest has blank screen and high cpu on first boot

2010-12-04 Thread Steven Wagner
Serge,
The version of windows I am using is, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2
Enterprise Edition.
The kvm command I tested was:
kvm -drive file=/mnt/slices/newtuna.qcow2,if=virtio,index=0,boot=on -m 1G
-vnc :1
and that gave me the same result, blank screen, high cpu usage.

I just now tried this...
I took the running line from ps which is:

/usr/bin/kvm -S -M pc-0.12 -enable-kvm -m 1024 -smp 1 -name newtuna
-uuid 21a3c860-05b0-5dcf-cc8c-9243604f8e9b -chardev
socket,id=monitor,path=/var/lib/libvirt/qemu/newtuna.monitor,server,nowait
-monitor chardev:monitor -localtime -boot c -drive
file=/mnt/slices/newtuna.qcow2,if=virtio,index=0,boot=on,format=qcow2
-drive
file=/mnt/isos/win2003/CRMEVOL_EN.ISO,if=ide,media=cdrom,index=2,format=raw
-drive file=/mnt/isos/virtio-
win-1.1.11-0.iso,if=ide,media=cdrom,index=3,format=raw -drive
file=/mnt/isos/viostor-31-03-2010-floppy.img,if=floppy,index=0,format=raw
-net nic,macaddr=52:54:00:68:23:96,vlan=0,model=virtio,name=virtio.0
-net tap,fd=58,vlan=0,name=tap.0 -chardev pty,id=serial0 -serial
chardev:serial0 -parallel none -usb -usbdevice tablet -vnc 127.0.0.1:8
-vga cirrus

and trimmed it down to

sudo /usr/bin/kvm -S -M pc-0.12 -enable-kvm -m 1024 -smp 1 -name newtuna
-boot c -drive
file=/mnt/slices/newtuna.qcow2,if=virtio,index=0,boot=on,format=qcow2
-vnc 127.0.0.1:8 -monitor stdio -vga cirrus

This command ran, and I was able to connect with vncviewer. All I got
was a blank screen, but I did not get any high cpu usage for the thread
on the server node. Then i figured out that monitor starts in paused
status, so I did c for continue, and verified the status was running.
vnc continued to show blank screen, and thread showed high cpu use.

then I tried your next suggestion...
qemu-img create win1.img 20G
kvm -hda win1.img -cdrom win2003*.iso -m 1G -boot d

my actual line was:
sudo kvm -hda win1.img -cdrom win2k3.iso -m 1G -boot d
and the returned the error Could not initialize SDL - exiting
next I did
sudo kvm -hda win1.img -cdrom win2k3.iso -m 1G -boot d -vga cirrus
still got the same error.

so next I tried:
 sudo /usr/bin/kvm -S -M pc-0.12 -enable-kvm -m 1G -hda win1.img -cdrom
win2k3.iso -vnc :10 -monitor stdio -vga cirrus
this worked, I was able to connect with vnc and go through the win2k3
installer. The installer goes through text mode, then reboots at which point i
have to reestablish the vnc connection, then goes into GUI install mode, setup
admin and pass, then finally finishing installation. And reboot...it worked,
windows came up okay. So now that I know that works... how to figure out why it
doesnt work when I was trying to install the way I usually do with libvirt.

2010-12-04 Thread Steven Wagner
Okay, so it appears to be a problem with something that is saved in the
image. I can use the full cmd and it runs...

sudo /usr/bin/kvm -M pc-0.12 -enable-kvm -m 1024 -smp 1 -name newtuna
-uuid 21a3c860-05b0-5dcf-cc8c-9243604f8e9b -localtime -boot c -drive

file=/mnt/isos/win2003/CRMEVOL_EN.ISO,if=ide,media=cdrom,index=2,format=raw

win-1.1.11-0.iso,if=ide,media=cdrom,index=3,format=raw -drive
file=/mnt/isos/viostor-31-03-2010-floppy.img,if=floppy,index=0,format=raw
-net nic,macaddr=52:54:00:68:23:96,vlan=0,model=virtio,name=virtio.0
-net tap,fd=58,vlan=0,name=tap.0 -chardev pty,id=serial0 -serial
chardev:serial0 -parallel none -usb -usbdevice tablet -vnc :10 -vga
cirrus

if I substitute
-drive file=win1.img
with
-drive file=/mnt/slices/newtuna.qcow2,if=virtio,index=0,boot=on,format=qcow2

it no longer works.

chardev:serial0 -parallel none -usb -usbdevice tablet -vnc 127.0.0.1:8
-vga cirrus

and trimmed it down to

sudo /usr/bin/kvm -S -M pc-0.12 -enable-kvm -m 1024 -smp 1 -name newtuna
-boot c -drive
file=/mnt/slices/newtuna.qcow2,if=virtio,index=0,boot=on,format=qcow2

[Bug 671163] Re: win2k3 guest has blank screen and high cpu on first boot

2010-12-04 Thread Steven Wagner
Okay, so it appears to be a problem with something that is saved in the
image. I can use the full cmd and it runs...

sudo /usr/bin/kvm -M pc-0.12 -enable-kvm -m 1024 -smp 1 -name newtuna
-uuid 21a3c860-05b0-5dcf-cc8c-9243604f8e9b -localtime -boot c -drive
file=win1.img -drive
file=/mnt/isos/win2003/CRMEVOL_EN.ISO,if=ide,media=cdrom,index=2,format=raw
-drive file=/mnt/isos/virtio-
win-1.1.11-0.iso,if=ide,media=cdrom,index=3,format=raw -drive
file=/mnt/isos/viostor-31-03-2010-floppy.img,if=floppy,index=0,format=raw
-net nic,macaddr=52:54:00:68:23:96,vlan=0,model=virtio,name=virtio.0
-net tap,fd=58,vlan=0,name=tap.0 -chardev pty,id=serial0 -serial
chardev:serial0 -parallel none -usb -usbdevice tablet -vnc :10 -vga
cirrus

if I substitute
-drive file=win1.img
with
-drive file=/mnt/slices/newtuna.qcow2,if=virtio,index=0,boot=on,format=qcow2

it no longer works.

[Bug 685079] [NEW] compiz negative is only in grey scale

2010-12-03 Thread Steven Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

1) Set a window to be in negative with SUPER+N.
2) perform an operation in that window that causes the application to run slow
and subsequently 'grey' the window temporarily.

After that point ALL windows on the system that are using the negative
plugin will only be in grey scale.

Workaround: go into the compiz setting manager, disable and reenable the
negative plugin. Will then work again correctly.

Serge -
Ill jump to the point and tell you that Ive tried without virtio as well, and
the problem remains that same. Thanks for your continued help on this issue. Im
blocked on migrating any windows hosts for now. The only other time ive seen
something like this was when my server has Cpu frequency scaling turned on
before..its would cause live hosts to lock and go to 99% cpu usage. But ive
already made sure cpu frequency scaling is off.

[Bug 668042] [NEW] target device info is not in dumpxml

2010-10-28 Thread Steven Wagner
Public bug reported:

Missing target device info makes it impossible to retrieve network usage
information about a guest from libvirt.

Reproduce:
Trigger of issue unknown.

Workaround:
Restart the guest, and the network device info reappears again.

[Bug 333201] Re: Virtual machine soft lockup - CPU gets stuck for XX seconds

2010-10-28 Thread Steven Wagner
CPU frequency scaling is on by default in lucid.

fix:
echo performance /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor

Once cpu frequency scaling was turned off, I no longer had this issue.
This is a cpu timing issue.

Shouldnt this be turned off by default on ubuntu server, or at least a
warning given for kvm libvirt users?

[Bug 333201] Re: Virtual machine soft lockup - CPU gets stuck for XX seconds

2010-08-20 Thread Steven Wagner
I am getting the same error, using Ubuntu Server 10.04 64 bit, with a
Ubuntu Server 10.04 64 bit guest. I am trying first to turn off cpu
frequency scaling and see if that makes the issue go away. Right now I
can't reproduce, but occurs consistently after about 2 weeks of uptime.
Sergey- What are the steps to switch off of kvm-clock?

[Bug 574665] Re: kvm + virtio disk corrupts large volumes (1TB).

2010-06-24 Thread Steven Wagner
As mentioned in comment #3, could this be related to a specific SATA
chipset? I have a Intel 82801JI ICH10 SATA AHCI Controller, and have
experienced random disk corruption on guests. Guests are both Linux and
Win2k3. High usage on the sata controller seemed to be the trigger. Ive
noticed no difference for if the guest is using virtio or ide mode.
Guests will become unresponsive for 10 seconds when there is high disk
usage on the node.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 361754 ***

The error vcpu not ready for apic_round_robin can also occur if a
guest is timing out for other reasons...like not enough RAM allocated. I
have examples of this occuring on a hardy 8.04 LTS system with KVM 84.

[Bug 505440] Re: django 1.2 for lucid

2010-02-20 Thread Steven Wagner
I agree as well that it is important to have django 1.2 in lucid. 1.2
will be the new standard when it is released. Outdated packages in a
distro make using distros rather purposeless. This is the same old issue
of coordination for releases in the open source community. It has to be
judged on a case by case basis by human beings.

Low impact - The django package does not have system wide dependencies
that would cause instability. Django is a highly issolated backage that
only effects django web development. As well, the django package will
continue to function the same way for the install.Gr

Benefit - Keeping lucid Ubuntu 10.04 compatible with the community at
large, and not having lucid's django packages be obsolete upon release.

quote from - http://www.djangoproject.com/weblog/2010/feb/06/12-beta-1/
on February 6, 2010 Also, note that this release constitutes the final
feature freeze for Django 1.2. No further new feature development will take
place before the final 1.2 release; only bugfix work will be accepted in trunk
until 1.2 lands.

If Django-1.2-beta1 is already in a feature freeze, it should be packaged into
lucid. Ubuntu regularly has put software labeled beta into its distro releases.
The final release of Django1.2 is already scheduled to come out on the week of
March 9 which is before the lucid has its beta1 freeze.

[Bug 254492] Re: kvm guests randomly freeze when using SMP, start again when key pressed in vnc console

A kvm-62 patch is probably not possible, but couldn't Hardy have a
backport for a newer kernel and kvm?

[Bug 114284] Re: Movie Player is not a good name for default audio player

2008-11-30 Thread Steven Wagner
Its not really fixed Tom. I still see the same issue in 8.10. Open up
a File Browser, navigate to a mp3 file. Right click on the mp3
file,..says Open with Movie Player. I don't really care if you want
to close the bug. Doesn't seem like anyone is going to do anything about
it anyways. Probably shouldn't have a 'fixed' status though.

[Bug 139514] Re: raid10 support should be added to installer

2008-10-28 Thread Steven Wagner
Informative comments, thank you. Along with adding RAID10 support, we
should also show a warning that stops the user from the /boot mount to
be on a raid10 partition, or the root mount being on the raid10
partition if there is no /boot mount selected. Currently, the installer
will continue, and the user will get a critical failure at the boot
loader install portion of the installer, that doesn't describe why grub
failed.

2008-10-27 Thread Steven Wagner
Will the patch work with grub too? With hardy, grub didnt support
booting off a raid10 partition. I thought thats why it wasn't included
in the installer, but I would love to see this make it in.

I have to do a kill on the kvm instance of the guest. Next I found that if I
removed the cd iso lines from the guests libvirt xml configuration, that the
host would in fact boot up normally.

These are the lines I removed from the guest xml config file:
disk type='file' device='cdrom'
  source file='/home/steven/win2003/winVOL_EN.ISO'/
  target dev='hdc' bus='ide'/
  readonly/
/disk
disk type='file' device='cdrom'
  source file='/home/steven/win2003/winVOLCD2_EN.ISO'/
  target dev='hdc' bus='ide'/
  readonly/
/disk

Then, after a shutdown of the win2003 guest, put the cdrom lines back in the
xml config, and on subsequent boots the host works with the iso mounted. wierd,
eh. Running hardy with all updates installed.

Re: [Bug 254492] Re: kvm guests randomly freeze when using SMP, start again when key pressed in vnc console

2008-08-25 Thread Steven Wagner
The OS I am running inside the guest is Ubuntu Hardy made with
ubuntu-vm-builder. I have verified in #kvm on freenode that others
have experienced the same issue. I tested with kvm-72 from intreped (
only userspace ) and experienced the same issue.

[Bug 254492] [NEW] kvm guests randomly freeze when using SMP, start again when key pressed in vnc console

2008-08-03 Thread Steven Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kvm

I've verified that other users are experiencing the same problem. Ports
22 and 80 are unresponsive during hang. Machine goes back to normal when
a key is pressed in the vnc console. Effects kvm-62 as well as kvm-71.
No known error messages. What else can I say? Work around is to only
use a single vcpu.

[Bug 246175] [NEW] cpu frequency scaling causes multiple vcpu guests to panic

2008-07-07 Thread Steven Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kvm

As soon as I turned on cpu frequency scaling, one of my guest domains
that was using multiple vcpus did a kernel panic.

The dmesg on the host server had repeated lines of this:
[1041427.963898] vcpu not ready for apic_round_robin
[1041427.963900] vcpu not ready for apic_round_robin
[1041427.963902] vcpu not ready for apic_round_robin

The Kernel panic on the guest said:
smp_apic_timer_interrupt...
apic_timer_interrupt...
EIP: insert_work
Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt.

I put all the guest domains to only use a single vcpu, and left the cpu
frequency scaling on at the host server. This appeared to avoid the
issue for the time being.
