Re: [Bug 1062623] Re: enable grub-2.00 boot-from-luks support

2024-06-13 Thread Stu Card
This was not strictly true of something we demonstrated in 2017: the
capability based, formally verified, open source, Syracuse Assured Boot
Loader Executive (SABLE), which used the "late launch" Dynamic Root of
Trust for Measurement (DRTM) instructions available on AMD and Intel x86
CPUs (skinit/senter) to decrypt an operating environment conditionally
based on measurements of Trusted Computing Base (TCB) software modules
extended into TPM Platform Configuration Registers (PCRs) matching
values previously whitelisted by the system administrator. We were able
to boot not only Ubuntu but also the formally verified seL4 microkernel.
Upstream changes broke this. We have not had the resources both to
maintain SABLE and patch the upstream changes, so SABLE has bit-rotted;
when we obtain the necessary resources, we would really like again to be
able to boot not only seL4 (our primary target) but also more popular
kernels (primarily Linux where the distro that is our usual focus and
tool is Ubuntu).

[Bug 1909835] [NEW] OGRE_BITES_HAVE_SDL flag set to 0, which disables basic Input / Ouput Functionality

2021-01-01 Thread Stu S
Public bug reported:

It appears the OGRE_BITES_HAVE_SDL compilation flag is set to zero when
this package was compiled.

I think it makes more sense to set it to 1, and make SDL a dependency of
libOgre on ubuntu (And, see below, I *think* the maintainer of ogre
agrees with me, hopefully I didn't put words in their mouth!):

- if you're using OGRE, it seems unlikely that you're running on a
headless machine.

- if you're not running on a headless machine, I believe SDL2 is usually
automatically installed (it was for me).

- the OGRE tutorials assume you're running the library with SDL enabled
- since it's a compilation flag, it can be non-trivial to track down the
issues that result when trying to follow the tutorial - namely, the
input listeners silently fail, since they're never called, since SDL
isn't present.

- It's true that, if I play devil's advocate, you could argue that the
Ogre package should expose a header file that you can extend and use SDL
with, or have some other method of enabling SDL integration without
recompiling the library. However, the overhead of providing an SDL-
enabled package seems quite small, and since the reasonable option to
enable Input / Output with a program using Ogre without this enabled is
to "compile ogre from source" - IOW, don't use the package, well, it
seems that enabling this in the package may be the best course of
action.

A brief discussion on the OGRE forums with the ogre maintainer:

https://forums.ogre3d.org/viewtopic.php?p=549964#p549964

My package information (yes, I'm using PopOS, but I believe is an ubuntu
package, so... well, hopefully that doesn't turn you folks off to a
reasonable solution. I did purchase my System76 computer just recently,
so I am putting some money into the ecosystem!)

If I should be reporting this to System76 instead, just let me know, but
this seemed like the best place to start!

[Bug 1772081] Re: HP x360 - Ryzen 2500U Locks up

2018-06-25 Thread Stu
Hi @kaihengfeng the bios is the one provided by HP, it doesn't seem to
have that option.

@freihut

I will try both those options.

Currently I've been using
amd_iommu=on

and
pcie_aspm=off
(which *seemed* to reduce the amount of lockups).

I'll try disabling these and use idle=nomwait and amdgpu.audio.

I guess that pcie_aspm=off and idle=nomwait will both reduce battery
life ?

Hi,
I'm away from my laptop for a week, it's the default HP bios, so I don't
think there is a typical idle current option.

I'll try that option when I get back.

2016-12-19 Thread Stu
This is still a bug in December 2016.

Tested in Gnome on 16.04.

Commercial programmes and Wine programmes install .desktop files. And
they just end up opening gedit.

I've noticed this bug for years but only reported it now.

[Bug 725434] Re: Nvidia drivers lead to extra memory usage for each process using libGL

2015-01-22 Thread Stu
The fix for this has been available for a long time, if it works - can
the cairo gl backend be re-enabled?It's been disabled for nearly 3
years now, in the meantime it is available on fedora.

This is affecting an app I maintain as I can't use it with cairo-gl for
now.

Affects me too.

Google Chrome, Image Viewer, GVim, Gnome Terminal are all very slow.
Switching workspace to the above applications are very slow as well.

However, playing Team Fortress 2 on Steam works perfectly.

I am using System76 15.6 Gazelle Professional laptop with Intel High
Definition Graphics 4600. Ubuntu Gnome 14.10 upgraded from 14.04

This bug is definitely happens on ubuntu inside virtualbox, with gnome
installed.I've generally don't restart networking now since it kills
the GUI.

Interestingly this time, it seemed to leave one of my programmes running
in the GUI, but it killed gnome shell + everything else.

I was also affected by this bug after upgrading from Saucy. I have the
Gnome PPA installed, and the PPA packages for saucy have higher version
number than the trusty packages.

I think this will be solved when the Gnome PPA for Trusty is fully
released.

I have the same problem N56VZ, latest BIOS, I used to have an N56VM for

Is it worth poking ASUS now this thread is quite big ?

Well it's 2014 and n56VZ has similar problems -

Up to date BIOS, Ubuntu 13.10 - hibernate and wake up - fans go mental.

The fix - turn off, unplug and take out battery.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-08-14 Thread Stu
Just bought a new computer, installed ubuntu 12.04 and it freezes
just like *all* my other computers do/have:

First computer I noticed it on was a my old work 2009 mac mini.

My desktop, Intel Q9650 (Nvidia graphics card).

My old laptop AMD (ACER / ATI)

My new laptop (ASUS /ATI)

My work mac mini - 2012 mac mini.

The only thing that seems to be in common, is running ubuntu and firefox - then
a hard freeze needing a reboot.

I'm quite up for finding a way of debugging this now...

[Bug 949071] Re: CRT monitor refresh setting always resets to 60 after reboot

2012-07-24 Thread Stu-e
I have been having a similar problem but with AMD graphics. In my case
it was only one particular user who when logged in the CRT display would
change refresh rate to 60Hz causing great discomfort. Changes to the
refresh rate using amdcccle (AMD equivalent of nvidia-settings) or even
compizconfig would not stick for this user at the next log-in.

The solution was to delete (or edit) the file:
~/.config/monitors.xml

The other users did not have this problem because they did not have this
file in their home directory.

[Bug 996534] Re: gnome-shell doesn't start in 12.04

2012-05-09 Thread Stu
I got this to stop crashing by opening main.js and commenting the line
_initRecorder();

Just change it to

//_initRecorder();

The actual error is might well be something to do with this change
http://web.archiveorange.com/archive/v/0bV89CzpHivImReI9dvM

Obviously this isn't a proper fix since recording is now disabled, but I
don't use that anyway.

[Bug 554005] Re: Using some glib functions within multiprocessing from a threaded app sometimes causes 100% CPU utilization

2012-04-30 Thread Stu
Confirming this - it only started affecting me since upgrading to 12.04.

When I login lightdm seems to freeze for ages, switching to another
terminal and running top I can see gwibber-service taking most of the
CPU, killing it gets me to a desktop.

(tested with login to gnome shell desktop).

[Bug 326555] Re: Please package flashplugin 64bit

2011-10-26 Thread Stu Zhao
What the flashplugin-installer package currently does is that in
postinst script, it downloads
http://archive.canonical.com/pool/partner/a/adobe-flashplugin/adobe-
flashplugin_11.0.1.152.orig.tar.gz, and install the 32-bit flash plugin
from it. However, the package contains both amd64 version and i386
version.

I think flashplugin-installer for amd64 should be fixed so that it
extracts 64bit flash plugin from it. This should be very easy to fix.

@RussianNeuroMancer, I think there is no need to fix restricted-addons
package, if flashplugin-installer is fixed to 64bit flash.

+ 1- create files in a ftp, like ftp://ftp-cor/global/test.odt
+ 2 - right button on the file and option ''copy link
+ 3 - open the writer (new file) , in the blank page option ''insert''
hyperlink
+ 4 - option internet, then select FTP
+ 5 - paste the hyperlink copied
+ 6 - apply and close
+ 7 - on the hyperlink press Ctrl + click
+ 8 - at this point the writer crash and close (this for an ODT file)
+
+ PS: for an ODS file at this point the screen just blink and do nothing
+ PS2: for an PDF or TXT file it's OK
+

Using: Ubuntu: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - Lucid Lynx - LibreOffice/Vroffice
  3.3.2

Correct result: open an ODT document linked to a FTP by an hyperlink on
  the writer.

[Bug 790220] [NEW] Kernel panic from nfsd on lightly loaded system

2011-05-30 Thread Stu Thompson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nfs-kernel-server

Twice in the past six months this box has experienced a kernel panic.
There are two active client machines. The nfs exports are of a drbd
(protocol C) mounted device formatted ext4 on an underlying 3ware
9650SE-16ML with 10 2TB WD RE4 SATA drives for a total of ~9TB. The
networking includes an 4x LACP bonded network device. (Overkill, in
hindsight.) CPU was fairly low at ~10%. There are no logs of the event,
but we did snap a picture with a phone: http://geekomatic.ch/images
/nfsd-goes-boom.jpg

As I expect this to occur again at some point, I'm going to tweak the
console settings in hopes of catching more information. Even peak loads
are not that high...so adding some debug logging is an option. Let me
know.

Dropping the LACP is an option.

[Bug 654562] Re: PDF importer doesn't import PDFs generated by ps2pdf

2011-02-17 Thread Stu Black
Unfortunately, I can't send the PostScript and PDF files that reliably
trigger this behavior, as they contain private information.

I am trying to create new files which trigger this behavior. While I
have not yet been able to trigger the behavior I described in the
initial bug report, I have been able to make a PDF file that causes
OpenOffice to die on a corrupted double-linked list. The PDF file is
produced by ps2pdf from a 2-up printing of an Emacs buffer of simple
Java code. This occurs with PDF files generated by both ps2pdf and
ps2pdf13.

This might be a separate issue, but I will attach a text file with the
backtrace, the PostScript file generated by Emacs, and the PDF file
generated by ps2pdf.

The backtrace was generated by invoking the following from a terminal:

oowriter beta.pdf

[Bug 661026] Re: Xorg crashes when rotate second display ATI 5850

2011-02-06 Thread Stu Anderson
I have the same problem as mudhead. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64 on a
Dell T3500 workstation w/ ATI v5800 and 3 screens (1 rotated, 2
horizontal). I can use ATI Catalyst to rotate the display and work
happily. I just have to un-rotate before shutdown so I can reboot
later.

The open source driver has rotation problems, as well. It appears to to
accept the command to rotate 1 of 2 displays (demanding a restart) but
then quietly ignores the rotation request.

I wonder if the root issue is memory management of the virtual area
implied by the bounding rectangle for the whole set of displays whose
area is now greater than the sum of the display areas. I note that the
extra virtual space below the horizontal displays is treated differently
in X11 than in Win7 (which works fine w/ my setup, sad to say). Win7
clips space at the bottom of the display. X11 lets stuff hang down into
it.

I have time, motivation and some skills to pursue these problems. How
do I sign up?

2010-11-14 Thread Stu Capon
It is a jpg so yes it is possible it is the same bug.
Having dead locked my system four times trying this out I wanted to do
some backups before comparing that link. Also having little in the way
of feedback after the action I wasn't sure how to check accurately.
