[Bug 1979010] Re: simplesamlphp-1.9.1-1.1 not compatible with PHP8.1

2024-06-14 Thread Stuart Mackay
Bump. MeToo. Is there any prospect of simplesamlphp 1.19.7 getting back from
ubuntu24 to 22. ? I'm trying to avoid manually adding the newer version and
breaking the LTS support. Upgrading my entire web server to 24 is a far larger
task.
Thanks.

[Bug 1845214] Re: Keyboard NumLock indicator turns off on connecting another keyboard

2022-02-11 Thread Stuart Longland
I've noticed the same thing… both on Ubuntu, and lately on Gentoo as
well, so I'm thinking maybe something in udev / kernel has changed?

I use FVWM2 as my desktop on both OSes. My desktop runs Ubuntu 20.04
(AMD64).

On my laptop (Panasonic CF-53, which runs Gentoo) it's particularly
insidious, plugging in the YubiKey (mine's a 5C which I use with a USB-
A-C adaptor) causes NumLock to be turned on, and if your PIN code uses
letters over the right-side of the keyboard, guess what? You're
unwittingly typing numbers now! Cue confusion when the YubiKey rejects
the PIN you just entered.

I've locked myself out of the YubiKey once because of that -- had to go
in with the PUK and unlock it.

My desktop doesn't seem to secretly turn NumLock on; the state is
retained, just the LED turns off.

If we can figure out what mechanism is doing it in Ubuntu, I'll chase up
what's doing it Gentoo-side.

[Bug 1960155] Re: [Quieter2, Intel Geminilake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Pulseaudio fails to detect card

2022-02-06 Thread Stuart Langridge
Note also that when I ran ubuntu-bug and selected that there was an
audio problem, I was asked which hardware I was having a problem with,
and this window listed the same thing three times. I don't know if this
is related, but it doesn't seem good.

× _ [] Apport

What hardware are you having a problem with?

(o) Digital Out, HDMI (sof-hda-dsp - sof-hda-dsp)
( ) Digital Out, HDMI (sof-hda-dsp - sof-hda-dsp)
( ) Digital Out, HDMI (sof-hda-dsp - sof-hda-dsp)
( ) It's not listed here

Note also that this occurs while pavecontrol can't find any card at all.

[Bug 1960155] [NEW] [Quieter2, Intel Geminilake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Pulseaudio fails to detect card

2022-02-06 Thread Stuart Langridge
Public bug reported:

Sound worked fine on this MeLe Quieter2 PC.
An automatic system upgrade happened.
A day later I got the software updater popup showing that there were updates to
install, and I installed them.
Then sound didn't work.

Both the automatic update and the manual update involved kernel,
hardware, driver stuff, so I do not know which may be responsible.

I know the sound worked at some point before 2022-02-03.

The automatic update on 2022-02-03 installed some kernel/hardware/driver
packages:

[Bug 935713] Re: Can no longer drop tabs onto tabs area in Chromium

2022-01-07 Thread Stuart Denyer
Same issues as drexlock and mmichalowicz. Started a day or two ago.

Kubuntu 21.10
Chrome Version 97.0.4692.71 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Kernel 5.13.0-23-generic
Intel i5-3470T and onboard graphics on a ThinkCentre M92p using X.org

I've just tried installing the latest Chrome build (same version as
above) on a current Kubuntu LiveCD session in VirtualBox, and the same
with a Mint Xfce 20.2 ISO I'd previously downloaded and an ISO of Fedora
from early 2021. Dragging tabs to reorder them worked in the Xfce and
Gnome sessions. If it's something to do with a recent Plasma component
update that's probably got more chance of being fixed quickly than if
it's purely a Chrome bug.

[Bug 1945493] [NEW] Regression in JIT matching with ^

2021-09-29 Thread Stuart Auchterlonie
Public bug reported:

pcre2 10.37 has a regression with its (jit) matching results.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install pcre2-tools
2. Run `pcre2test -jit`
3. At re> prompt, enter (with the quotes):
   "#(A+)#\d+"
4. At the data> prompt, enter:

Actual results:

"No Match" in 21.10 - Impish Indri Beta

Expected results:

"#A#0" / "A" in 21.04 - hirsuite

[Bug 1944081] [NEW] Package Manager indicator has incorrect, old wording and bad grammar

2021-09-19 Thread Stuart Langridge
Public bug reported:

If I create an issue with installed packages, I get a "no entry sign"
icon in my Ubuntu 20.04 top panel. (I am not sure which package creates
this indicator; please reassign if it's not software-properties.) This
indicator has a menu (screenshot attached) with text reading:

An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu
or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: '
Error: BrokenCount > 0' This usually means that your installed packages
have unmet dependencies

This message has numerous problems.

1. There is no "right-click menu"; a left-click or a right-click on this icon
both show the same thing
2. There is no "Package Manager" entry in the shown menu (there is the error
message above, a separator, "Show updates", a separator, "Show notifications",
and "Preferences")
3. It recommends running "apt-get" which should be "apt"
4. The error message has a space at the start of it
5. The error message uses straight quotes rather than typographic quotes
6. It does not end with a full stop despite being written as prose

[Bug 1942949] [NEW] PulseAudio Preferences options disabled

2021-09-07 Thread Stuart Schneider
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS x86_64 fully updated with apt.

My installed packages:

ii pulseaudio 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.11
 amd64PulseAudio sound server
ii paprefs1.1-1build1
 amd64PulseAudio Preferences

Running paprefs to enable options shows everything disabled/unavailable.
Specifically options for Network Access, Network Server, etc are all
greyed out and not selectable.

Using this workaround found online, options within paprefs are all enabled:
ln -s /usr/lib/pulse-13.99.1 /usr/lib/pulse-13.99

After, setting option to 'Make discoverable Apple AirTunes sound devices
available locally' now works and audio output to such a device works
perfectly.

Expected behavior - paprefs should not need a symlink to an old library
directory in order to function correctly.

[Bug 1935777] [NEW] Power Saving settings have incomprehensible meanings/labels for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

2021-07-11 Thread Stuart Langridge
Public bug reported:

In the Power Saving section of the Power tab of the Settings app, there
are two switches, one labelled "Wi-Fi" with subheading "Wi-Fi can be
turned off to save power" and the other labelled "Bluetooth" with
subheading "Bluetooth can be turned off to save power". On my machine,
the "Wi-Fi" switch is off and the "Bluetooth" switch is on. (Screenshot
attached.)

I do not know what these switches mean, and I do not know what will
change if I change their settings.

Does this mean

* yes Ubuntu is permitted to switch off your wifi to save power but it's not
permitted to switch off your Bluetooth, or
* it is permitted to switch off your Bluetooth but not permitted to switch off
your wifi, or
* your bluetooth is already switched off to save power but wifi is always on,
or
* wifi is already switched off to save power but bluetooth is always on, or
* something else entirely?

I am utterly confused.

[Bug 1893806] [NEW] Ubiquity icon is misleading and not very well executed

2020-09-01 Thread Stuart Jaggers
Public bug reported:

The visual metaphor for the current Ubiquity icon caused some confusion
(e.g., see https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2020/03/ubuntu-installer-icon-
strange). Also, IMO, the design with lots of small particles doesn't
map well to the Yaru icon style, which requires an outline at smaller
sizes. The upshot of this is that neither the idea nor the execution
are universally popular.

Over on the Yaru side, we've just merged a new design into Master, which
hopefully makes it clearer that the icon writes Ubuntu to hard disk:
https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/pull/2340.

This "bug" could be fixed by backporting the new icon to Focal Fossa
before 20.04.02 - are we able to proceed?

Thank you!

EDIT:

1) Version of Ubuntu = 20.04 and 20.04.01 live disk

2) N/A

3) Expected a clear and well-executed icon for the installer when using
the live disk

4) Got the current icon which (see above) is sub-optimal.

[Bug 1887411] Re: system-users-symbolic icon has unclear visual metaphor

2020-07-29 Thread Stuart Jaggers
I've upgraded to focal-proposed and this bug is fixed. Tested by:

a) Checking the Lollypop UI which includes this symbol;
b) Checking the Users category in Ubuntu settings app.

[Bug 1873403] Re: [nvidia] Screen turns off when trying to set some fractional scaling values

2020-07-23 Thread Stuart Still
I've tried this from pop!_os 20.04, nVidia 2060 super GTX, 4k monitor.

Starting off in 100% scaling, I select 125% scaling. Before enabling
proposed, this resulted in the screen switching off.

Since enabling proposed and installing the updated packages, this now
doesn't switch the screen off, but the behaviour is still not correct. I
believe I'm now experiencing
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1875285 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1825593 (the
latter of which is marked as fixed).

[Bug 1887420] [NEW] network-cellular-connected-symbolic isn't monochrome

2020-07-13 Thread Stuart Jaggers
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * The icon called network-cellular-connected-symbolic appears at the
top right of the desktop when users connect to their phones via
bluetooth to use data. The icon includes green fill, which is
inconsistent with the monochrome icons used for (e.g.) wifi. See GitHub
issue https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/issues/2192.

 * Reason to backport to Focal: the inconsistency was missed because I
don't use this feature and it's an unfortunate oversight. When the icon
appears, it does so in a prominent position and is constantly visible to
the user, giving a poor impression of Ubuntu.

[Test Case]

 * Use Bluetooth tethering so your laptop is making use of your phone's
data connection. Notice that, unlike the rest of the icons at the top
right of the screen, the symbol for the connection isn't monochrome.

 * Build Yaru from Master and notice how all icons are now monochrome.

[Regression Potential]

 * No regression potential.

 * Tested by building Yaru from source.

[Other Info]

 * Link to the GitHub PR: https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/pull/2252.

** Affects: yaru-theme (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1887419] [NEW] Lollypop music player mixes Yaru and Adwaita symbols

2020-07-13 Thread Stuart Jaggers
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * The Yaru theme has some of the icons used by Lollypop but not all of
them. This results in the Lollypop sidebar having a mix of Adwaita
symbols (with 2px strokes) and Yaru ones (which have 1px). See GitHub
issue https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/issues/2208.

 * Reason to backport to Focal: displaying symbols from two different
themes gives a poor impression of Ubuntu to users who want to use a
popular native music player.

[Test Case]

 * Install Lollypop and look at the sidebar. Some of the symbols are
heavy and some are light. (Alternatively, the GitHub issue linked above
has a screenshot.)

 * Build Yaru from Master and notice how the Lollypop sidebar is now
consistent with itself and the rest of the Yaru theme.

[Regression Potential]

 * No regression potential.

 * Tested by building Yaru from source.

[Other Info]

 * Links to the GitHub PRs: https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/pull/2235 and

[Bug 1887411] [NEW] system-users-symbolic icon has unclear visual metaphor

2020-07-13 Thread Stuart Jaggers
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * The system-users-symbolic icon doesn't represent users in the plural.
It shows a single generic figure (head and shoulders) representing one
user. This is a misleading visual metaphor, since a single head and
shoulders is universally recognised as the current or logged-in user.

 * Reason to backport to Focal: the corresponding Adwaita icon shows two
users. Third party apps that use the icon will expect it to represent
more than one person. Failing to provide a suitable icon will have
confusing results in Ubuntu.

[Test Case]

 * Install Lollypop and look at the sidebar. "Compilations" has the
symbol of a single user, which is confusing. Lollypop requested an icon
with multiple figures to represent multiple artists, but Ubuntu supplied
something inappropriate. This issue may be duplicated whenever a third
party app uses this icon.

 * Build Yaru from Master and notice how the icon now has the same
visual metaphor as Adwaita (i.e., it shows two users). The Lollypop UI
makes more sense and the theme honours the app's intentions.

[Regression Potential]

 * No regression potential.

 * Tested by building Yaru from source.

[Bug 1844426] Re: Impossible to set up Livepatch on Ubuntu MATE

2020-07-10 Thread Stuart Langridge
I think the place to fix this may be in _spawn_goa_with_args in
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-properties/tree/softwareproperties/gtk/DialogAuth.py#n196.
Perhaps that function should check for XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME and if it
isn't GNOME, pop up a message window pointing to a wiki page which can then be
edited by flavours to explain what to do to sign in to Ubuntu One and/or
Livepatch in their desktops?

[Bug 1884458] Re: pytz mishandles Africa/Khartoum in 2017

2020-07-06 Thread Stuart Bishop
The (awful) API provided by pytz and the requirement for localize() is
there for legacy reasons. At the time, it was the only way to get the
Python datetime library to do what was needed to get cross-timezone, DST
aware arithmetic working. The future is the new built-in support in
Python 3.9, available as a backport to earlier Python versions at
https://pypi.org/project/backports.zoneinfo/

[Bug 1844426] Re: Impossible to set up Livepatch on Ubuntu MATE

2020-06-03 Thread Stuart Langridge
Understood that gnome-control-centre isn't meant to be used outside
GNOME. However, software-properties *is* meant to be used outside GNOME,
so perhaps it should detect whether it's running in GNOME and not show a
button for a GNOME-only bit of software in that situation?

[Bug 1879318] Re: Removing gnome software snap plugin breaks gnome software storefront on Xubuntu 20.04

2020-05-20 Thread Stuart
Of course it does, that's why I removed it. All recommended applications
shown on the gnome storefront are snaps, all of them, see for yourself.
Also when you search it always shows snaps first instead of repo apps.
So the workaround is not a solution.

[Bug 1857407] Re: mplayer broken Theora codec: libmpcodecs/vf.c:287: vf_get_image: Assertion `h == -1 || h >= vf->h' failed.

2020-04-26 Thread Stuart Longland
Right, so the situation is this: bit rot.

mplayer is no longer maintained apparently, the suggested alternative
being `mpv`, which *can* be used with `xscreensaver` (see Debian
bug#958865 link).

Guess we can close this now, time to migrate over to `mpv`.

[Bug 1873346] Re: Remove the grey border/background from the Files (nautilus) icon

2020-04-18 Thread Stuart Jaggers
Hi guys,

To explain how we ended up with the current icon... in Suru, there were
basically two types of app icon: an object on a squircle, or a squircle-
shaped object.

Object on a squircle example: https://github.com/snwh/suru-icon-
theme/blob/master/Suru/48x48/apps/filemanager-app.png

Squircle-shaped object example: https://github.com/snwh/suru-icon-
theme/blob/master/Suru/48x48/apps/camera-app.png

In the current Yaru icons, we use more than one shape, but the same
principle applies, so a few of the icons feature an object or glyph on a
backplate (which is usually round or square). The symbolic versions of
those icons don't always include the outline because it doesn't add any
meaning, and you only have 16px to play with (example: the symbolic
version of the tweaks app just has the two toggles without the square
outline).

Having said all that, I can understand why the current Files icon looks
a bit out-of-place, because not many of the default apps ended up having
this kind of icon. There are others in the Yaru set but they aren't
installed by default. I think startup apps might be the only other one
you see in a fresh install.

We came to the current design after trying two others (including a
folder without the backplate) and ended up cycling back to one that was
very similar to Suru. I didn't mind it without the background but we
got bad feedback about that too :) Anyway, I'm happy to continue to
think about this design.

[Bug 1870925] [NEW] UI freeze exception to remove problematic legacy action icons

2020-04-05 Thread Stuart Jaggers
Public bug reported:

The Yaru team added some icons to the theme for use in legacy GTK2 apps
(e.g., document-new, document-export and so on).

These looked good in apps like Inkscape. However, during regression
testing, it was found that the icons caused unpredictable behaviour in
other GTK2 apps. https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/issues/2108 includes
screenshots.

The only way to fix is this to provide a 100% complete legacy icon set
including all sizes, which isn't achievable for 20.04.

So, our PR https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/pull/2127 has removed the
legacy icons from Yaru for now. It would be great to have a feature
freeze exception for this. Any existing screenshots shouldn't be
affected unless they show third party GTK2 apps on the desktop, and it
would be a minor cosmetic difference if there's a difference at all.

If we don't have the freeze exception, some legacy apps will look poor,
as you can see from the issue
https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/issues/2108. Apologies for not realising
this before the freeze! The benefit is a more consistent and
professional visual experience for users who install and use GTK2 apps.

it is as its HSP/HFP and your device is multiprofile and the default is
HSP/HFP.

[Bug 1865257] [NEW] Pulseaudio needs kernal conf IMU=size (64)

2020-02-29 Thread stuart naylor
Public bug reported:

Since Pulseaudio 11.0
https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Notes/11.0/
"Improved bluetooth MTU configuration
The packet size (a.k.a. MTU, "maximum transmission unit") that PulseAudio uses
with the bluetooth HSP profile was previously always configured to be 48 bytes.
That worked with most hardware, but some adapters require a different packet
size. Now PulseAudio asks the kernel what packet size should be used, which
fixes the problem.

However, a new problem appeared: some adapters that used to work with 48
byte packet size don't any more work with the size that the kernel tells
PulseAudio to use. If you find that HSP audio stopped working when
upgrading to PulseAudio 11.0, you can revert to the old behaviour by
passing option "autodetect_mtu=no" to module-bluetooth-discover in
/etc/pulse/default.pa. If that fixes the problem, then please report the
problem to the BlueZ and/or PulseAudio developers, so that the kernel
can be fixed.

Update: We decided to disable the MTU autodetection in 11.1 by default,
because the feature caused too much problems and it looked like the
kernel would not really get fixed even when people reported issues."

Presume its a config option in the kernel that differs on each model.
Pi3/4 should be 64 as they are very much like the 48 byte packages in
reverse as don't work with the default of 48.

Its listed as Pulse audio but presume it should be a config setting of
the kernel for each Pi model.

[Bug 1730947] Re: package fails to build with glibc-2.26

2019-12-22 Thread Stuart Longland
I hit the same bug on Gentoo with glibc-2.29-r2 and alsa-lib-1.1.8.

Looking at the code, I see they do something similar to the suggestion
made in https://stackoverflow.com/a/32672476.

It would appear this kludge no longer works. Down later the suggestion
was to tweak the -std=XXX flag passed to gcc. After unsuccessfully
trying to set this in CFLAGS, I got things compiling with this:

diff --git a/CMakeLists.txt b/CMakeLists.txt
index 639fdc711..2d1c744f2 100644

cairo-dock-plug-ins now build. I'm just trying them out to see if there
are any ill effects from doing the above hack.

[Bug 1609750] Re: Audio not working on Acer Chromebook R11

2019-09-26 Thread daniel primo stuart
Kernel needs this patch for maxim98090 to work on cyan and some baytrail
chromebooks:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/d5e120422db8808e1c8b1507900ca393a877c58f

As it didn't make to 5.3 on time, would be nice if it were backported by
ubuntu devs

[Bug 119899]

2019-09-02 Thread Stuart-stuarthalliday
Eh?

Surely you can't expect mere mortal humans to do this?

What if they've never read your posting?

No, the solution is for the *program* to prompt the user to perform a
Folder rebuild and then do it.

With the RTL8156 the rk3399 struggles slighlty with iperf3 @ 2.5gb but
almost gets there.

Needs affinity to a big core though

What is confusing me is on Arm64 when you act as server/slave to a client the
throughput drops drastically.

Unfortunately I removed the archive version of LO and installed the snap

pleasingly it looks as though Jani can, so I'll leave it in their hands.

[Bug 1820135] [NEW] Feature freeze exception to address three icon bugs

2019-03-14 Thread Stuart Jaggers
Public bug reported:

Following UI freeze, testing has discovered some icon bugs which could
be fixed if an exception were granted. They are as follows.

1) Missing symlinks cause Gnome control centre to fall back to non-Yaru
symbols for power settings and online accounts. The fallback symbols
are thicker than the corresponding ones in Yaru and look out of place
next to the others.

https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/issues/1259 describes the issue and
https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/pull/1262 fixes it by adding the missing
symlinks (both with screenshots).

2) A background process puts a poorly rendered, pixellated Yaru icon on
the launcher when it errors. The cause was determined to be a symlink.
Removing this causes the process to fall back to a pre-Yaru icon which
is properly rendered. The proposed fix at this stage is merely to
remove the symlink, because an old icon rendered properly is better than
a Yaru one with pixels.

https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/issues/1210 describes the issue and
diagnosis (with screenshots) and
https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/pull/1267 fixes it.

3) A missing symlink causes Gnome Notes to use a non-Yaru icon when we
have a Yaru icon for Notes. Adding the missing symlink would fix this.

https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/issues/1180#issuecomment-472493170
describes the problem with screenshot.

All three issues could be fixed and fully tested with minimal risk
simply by adding a small number of symlinks and removing one other. The
benefit would be making the theme more polished in time for 19.04,
rather than shipping it with three bugs that could be fixed. The
changes have been tested by the Yaru team in branches of Yaru and the
nature of these cosmetic changes makes them low risk. Because they're
icon defects, they would otherwise be visible to all users of Ubuntu,
and fixing them would have a good ratio of risk to benefit IMHO.

[Bug 1270913] Re: zram-config doesn't start if zram is built-in, not module

2019-03-04 Thread stuart naylor
zram_config because it makes absolutely no check and overwrites any
previous zram devices due to hard coding.

I have been trying to do something simple as use log2ram with a compressed zram
drive.
Came to the conclusion that because of zero checks via zram_config its
impossible to have both in operation unless provide zram control in log2ram.

After doing that and some reading of
https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/blockdev/zram.txt I am
completely bemused to what, why and how zram_config operates and prob
someone needs to ask https://www.linkedin.com/in/nitingupta910 the
kernel author of zram some advise.

You can have a look at what I have done in
https://github.com/StuartIanNaylor/log2ram/blob/master/log2ram but wouldn't
touch zram_config with a bargepole.
Also asked these questions in
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zram-config/+question/678905

As there seems to be little correlation with zram_config &
https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/blockdev/zram.txt !!?

[Bug 1270913] Re: zram-config doesn't start if zram is built-in, not module

2019-03-04 Thread stuart naylor
https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/blockdev/zram.txt

"num_devices parameter is optional and tells zram how many devices should be
pre-created. Default: 1"

The whole first procedure is a question to why and completely fails to check
previous devices or modprobe zram services:-
***
# load dependency modules
if grep ZRAM=m /boot/config-$(uname -r)
  NRDEVICES=$(grep -c ^processor /proc/cpuinfo | sed 's/^0$/1/')
  if modinfo zram | grep -q ' zram_num_devices:' 2>/dev/null; then
MODPROBE_ARGS="zram_num_devices=${NRDEVICES}"
  elif modinfo zram | grep -q ' num_devices:' 2>/dev/null; then
MODPROBE_ARGS="num_devices=${NRDEVICES}"
  else
exit 1
  fi
  modprobe zram $MODPROBE_ARGS
fi
*
zram can be easily checked to see if it has a sys class

ZRAM_SYS_DIR='/sys/class/zram-control'
if [ ! -d "${ZRAM_SYS_DIR}" ]; then

if not then modprobe zram will create it.
So after a modprobe zram all you have to do is create first device /dev/zram0
As cat /sys/class/zram-control/hot_add will always contain the next device
number and will already contain '1'

After that

  RAM_DEV=$(cat /sys/class/zram-control/hot_add)
  echo ${COMP_ALG_SWAP} > /sys/block/zram${RAM_DEV}/comp_algorithm
  echo ${mem} > /sys/block/zram${RAM_DEV}/disksize
  mkswap /dev/zram${RAM_DEV}
  swapon -p ${SWAP_PRI} /dev/zram${RAM_DEV}
is all that is needed as cat /sys/class/zram-control/hot_add is incremented on
each addition

But then we have the questions of if a single device is automatically
allocated streams for all cores why add a block device for each core?

Also zram can use all crypto listed in proc/crypto but its hard coded.
Same for swap priority & size setting.

There is little correlation in the methods used in zram-config &
https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/blockdev/zram.txt and maybe
someone should ask why?

Not sure what has changed from Xenial in deb packaging and systemd
service retention but its not a user conf file in anyway so |remove and
delete file.

The package is practically completely broken and totally illogical and amazing
it has managed to duck under the radar of so many releases.

I must admit the idea of "i386" headers and "amd64" headers is
completely foreign to me. They're plain-text C code files, with no
concept of processor architecture or bit width whatsoever.

Normally for the C library, i386 and AMD64 binaries are built from the
same C source (and headers), and are installed *together* so there
shouldn't be a need to introduce this fragile complexity of having
architecture-dependent C compiler include paths.

It certainly was this way on Gentoo/MIPS where we had to contend with
not two, but three ABIs (o32, n32 and n64), having a single "include"
header tree with multiple ABIs continues to work just fine there. I
think Ubuntu in having "i386" and "AMD64" headers are trying to solve a
non-existent problem, and creating others (like this one) in the
process.

I believe this policy may need a re-think. Anyway, it looks like `sa-
compile` is working once again.

Regards,
Stuart Longland

[Bug 1816269] [NEW] No image on KVM switch

2019-02-16 Thread Stuart
Public bug reported:

Hi all,

I have a NUC7i7BNH with the latest BIOS (0062) running Ubuntu 18.04
(uname -r = 4.18.0-15-generic). I have the NUC connected via USB-C to a
dual DisplayPort adapter, to an Avocent SV340D KVM.

If I have the KVM on the switch for the NUC, everything works great. If
I switch the KVM to another channel, and then switch back to the NUC, I
only get black screens. The only solution is to hard reboot the NUC.

Any help would be appreciated.

2019-02-15 Thread Stuart Longland
Okay, well firstly, we're not planning on moving up to 18.04 LTS for a
while… so everything here is as per the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS distribution.

> - the current libperl in 18.04 should be libperl5.26:amd64 - could you
upgrade that and all other packges and retry?

root@bnesecrf0:~# apt-cache search libperl
libperl-dev - Perl library: development files
libperl5.22 - shared Perl library

…

It would appear libperl5.22:amd64 is the equivalent on 16.04.

iF sa-compile 3.4.2-0ubuntu0.16. allTools for
compiling SpamAssassin rules into C

The F in dpkg output here is because dpkg-configure fails to
successfully run `sa-compile` for the same reason.

Something, it would seem, is wrong with the C preprocessor include path
at the time when ExtUtils::xsubpp invokes gcc. To the best of my
knowledge, there are no locally installed Perl modules on this server (a
scan of /usr/local shows no perl modules there).

** Affects: spamassassin (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 510613] Re: look(1) can't open bigfiles

2019-01-17 Thread Stuart Taylor
It would be great to see this fixed in an upcoming release of Ubuntu.

I had the same problem and applied Mark Nieweglowski's fix here -
https://github.com/stuartraetaylor/bsdmainutils-look

$ ./look -bf $(echo -n "P@ssw0rd" | sha1sum | cut -d' ' -f1)
pwned-passwords-sha1-ordered-by-hash-v4.txt

There's also an alternative approach here -
