[Bug 1081842] Re: [cinnamon] Cinnamon Menu not working properly

2013-06-14 Thread Sven Ehret
running on a fresh Mint 15 install here, albeit with a /home directory
from a former LMDE install.

After replacing the file from post #38, categories get highlighted, but
no applications show. Search field does not work: I can type, but
nothing is found, categories only fade out.

After I renamed all directories ~/.gnome* to ~/.gnome*.bak, some more
categories did show.

Output of cinnamon --replace 21 | tee log_cinnamon.txt attached.

[Bug 886048] [NEW] “check password script” option does not reliably pass parameters

2011-11-04 Thread Sven Ehret
Public bug reported:

the purpose of my “check password script” is, amongst others, to check
if a new password contains relevant portions of the username. Therefore,
it is called like this from smb.conf:

check password script = /usr/local/sbin/checkpw.sh %U

I did expect it to pass the username to the script.

But most of the times, the script receives not the username, but the
computer account name of the specific user, or even nothing at all.

I verified this by logging what the script gets:

username=$1
log user $username initiated password change

and this is the result:
/var/log/syslog:Nov 4 08:07:57 hostname checkpasswd: user client hostname
initiated password change
/var/log/syslog:Nov 4 08:35:53 server hostname checkpasswd: user client

[Bug 844774] [NEW] Samba ignores “check password script” option

2011-09-08 Thread Sven Ehret
Public bug reported:

from the smb.conf man page:

check password script (G)

The name of a program that can be used to check password complexity.
The password is
sent to the program's standard input.

The program must return 0 on a good password, or any other value if
the password is
bad. In case the password is considered weak (the program does not
return 0) the user
will be notified and the password change will fail.

Problem: The script does not get executed. Whatever is configured here,
the script is not being touched and so the option is useless.

The execution of this script should be logged with log level 5 but it
isn't. It also does not give an error if the script cannot be found.
Testparm warns, however, if you misspell the check password option.

This has been working two months ago when I was testing it, but now that
the password policy must be enforced it is not.

[Bug 605454] [NEW] Lucid Preseed: GRUB location disregarded

2010-07-14 Thread Sven Ehret
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

I created a CD for automatic installation of Lucid servers using the
preseed template file from https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-
guide/example-preseed.txt.

Now I need to have a high-capacity installation source. “No big deal”, I
thought, “I'll just create a bootable USB drive and install from there”.

Unfortunately, it seems that the installer does not honor my GRUB
location configuration at all. My USB drive becomes /dev/sda during the
installation and this is where GRUB gets installed, regardless what I
configure. The installer installs GRUB on my USB drive, not on my
internal hard drive.

I tried several configuration options:

d-i grub-installer/bootdev string (hd1,0)
d-i grub-installer/bootdev string (hd0,0) (hd1,0)
d-i grub-installer/bootdev string /dev/sdb
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=433875)
d-i grub-installer/bootdev string /dev/sda /dev/sdb

but they all do not work, leaving my server unbootable from hard drive.
If I boot the server from my USB installation medium, however, my server
system loads like it should.

Any assistance is highly appreciated because I'll soon need to rollout
servers in very remote places without stable internet connection.

I can deliver more information when I know what is useful.

[Bug 583362] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 DVD: install fails due to corrupt zlib1g package

2010-05-21 Thread Sven Ehret
** Description changed:

I downloaded the DVD iso file from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/dvd/current/ and tried to install it. The
  installation failed like this:

  Debbootstrap warning.
  Warning:
file:///cdrom/pool/main/z/zlib/zlib1g_1.2.3.3.dfsg-15ubuntu1_amd64.deb was
corrupt

  and then some consecutive errors.

I double-checked the md5sums and they are fine! So I guess the official
ISO includes a corrupt file. I also did the automatic check that is
- offered in the boot menu and it reported two errors (but not which).
+ offered in the boot menu and it reported two errors (unfortunately it
+ did not say what errors).

-

[Bug 583362] [NEW] Ubuntu 10.04 DVD: install fails due to corrupt zlib1g package

2010-05-20 Thread Sven Ehret
Public bug reported:

I downloaded the DVD iso file from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/dvd/current/ and tried to install it. The
installation failed like this:

Debbootstrap warning.
Warning: file:///cdrom/pool/main/z/zlib/zlib1g_1.2.3.3.dfsg-15ubuntu1_amd64.deb
was corrupt

and then some consecutive errors.

I double-checked the md5sums and they are fine! So I guess the official
ISO includes a corrupt file. I also did the automatic check that is
offered in the boot menu and it reported two errors (but not which).

I finally downloaded the package with the same name from (some legitimate
website, I guess it must have been) http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/zlib1g.
The package version has a different md5sum and the installation seems to work
so far.

[Bug 578724] [NEW] update-manager reports “some updates could not be installed… your system is in an unusuable state… please report th is bug”.

2010-05-11 Thread Sven Ehret
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I am unsure what this may be. Seems a common error during upgrade, bug
reports about this are often marked as “invalid” by the maintainers.
I'll file this report either way because the software asks me for it.

No, as “touch test.test ; touch TEST.test” still creates two separate

My conclusion for now:

Does setting preserve case=no solve your issues ?

YES, BUT it creates a new critical issue. With this option, it is no
longer possible to create files with the case that the file passes (see
smb.conf). They are forced to be the default case (lower).

2010-04-21 Thread Sven Ehret
** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Invalid

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: samba

In my setup using samba's “case sensitive = no” option it is not
possible for Windows machines to create files with the same filename but
different cases. Example: “file.test” can not reside next to
  “FILE.test”.

However, when a LINUX client (Gentoo) connects to the SAMBA share, it is
allowed to create such files, ignoring SAMBA's case sensitivity option.
When the same LINUX client connects to a Windows share the behaviour is
  correct.

[Bug 561281] [NEW] case sensitivity option (case sensitive=no) is not honored

2010-04-12 Thread Sven Ehret
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

In my setup using samba's “case sensitive = no” option it is not
possible for Windows machines to create files with the same filename but
different cases. Example: “file.test” can not reside next to
“FILE.test”.

However, when a LINUX client (Gentoo) connects to the SAMBA share, it is
allowed to create such files, ignoring SAMBA's case sensitivity option.
When the same LINUX client connects to a Windows share the behaviour is
correct.

[Bug 561281] Re: case sensitivity option (case sensitive=no) is not honored

2010-04-12 Thread Sven Ehret
I disagree.

The problem is that when, for example, two files “test.test” and
“test.TEST” are being addressed they should be treated as the exact same
file, as case sensitivity should be off and SAMBA should not care about
letter cases. They do when being addressed by a Windows (7) machine, in
my setup, but they do not when they are being created by a LINUX client
(mount options see above). When they are created by that LINUX machine,
SAMBA allows “test.test” and “TEST.test” to be two different,
independent files when it should not.

I do not think that the client is the issue because when being connected
to a Windows share the behaviour is as desired.

[Bug 520750] Re: lucid server alpha2 grub fails to install

2010-02-12 Thread Sven Ehret
This is affecting me too, also in an installation on a physical machine.

The error does *not* occur when installing without proper network
connection (I suspect the error comes from a package updated during
installation). But it *does* when dist-upgrading afterwards.
