[Bug 1319872] Re: Dash doesn't work when scim is selected as the Keyboard Input Method System

2017-01-05 Thread Swarup Dev
I just tested it. The same problems persist.

After scim is selected as the Keyboard Input Method:

1. Dash opens but one cannot type in the search screen.
2. The backspace and delete keys on the keyboard do not work.

I have attached here a sample of what happens when using the backspace
and delete keys while scim is active. Note that the date of the sample
is May, 2014. I just did it again, and replicated the same. Attached in
next post. (This bug page does not seem to allow for two attachments to
be attached in one post.)

[Bug 1315579] Re: When using scim-m17n in gedit, the backspace and delete keys are dysfunctional

2016-05-31 Thread Swarup Dev
Yes, it was specifically in Trusty 14.04 that this issue was found, in
May of 2014. Due to the Gedit and Dash issues with SCIM, I had to leave
using SCIM and use Fcitx instead. For the last 2 years I've been using
Fcitx.

As to your second question, I would need to make SCIM the active input
method and test it. If doing so will affect the action taken here, let
me know and I will try and test it.

[Bug 1312625] Re: Most menu items are greyed out in unity after upgrade to 14.04

2014-09-08 Thread Swarup Dev
Wish I had subscribed to this bug-- your workaround works!

I'll start editing in Audacity now and see how it works over time i.e.
whether stopping playback consistently re-enables the menu items.

To the maintainers of Audacity: It would be nice to get a permanent
solution so we don't have to keep deleting the ~/.audacity-data prior to
opening up Audacity in order to enable the menu items.

[Bug 1319872] [NEW] Dash doesn't work when scim is selected as the Keyboard Input Method System

2014-05-15 Thread Swarup Dev
Public bug reported:

This issue regards the packages for SCIM Input Method and DASH.*

In Ubuntu 14.04, the Dash doesn't work when scim is selected as the
Keyboard Input Method. "Doesn't work" means the Dash opens, but one
cannot type in the search screen. It accepts one letter and then
freezes. When one goes into language support and changes the Keyboard IM
to another option such as ibus or Fcitx, the Dash problem resolves. I
started a thread on the Ubuntu forums
 about this matter
some weeks ago, and someone else on the thread (tuannb86) reported the
same problem. So there are definitely multiple users facing this issue.

*I could not follow the standard procedure to initiate the bug in
Ubuntu, because that requires hitting Alt-F2 to open a run-command
screening and typing "ubuntu-bug 15370". (15370 is the number of the
running process for scim in system monitor). By that way the bug is
initiated and all the relevant info comes directly into the bug. But
when scim is the selected IM, due to the bug I can't type in the dash
screen. That includes the run-command screen.

[Bug 1319136] [NEW] Fcitx deletes final letter of previous word when hit space and then disable command

2014-05-13 Thread Swarup Dev
Public bug reported:

Fcitx is an Input Method for typing many languages using scripts other
than latin. It works well in many regards, but there is one serious
issue. It is a problem that occurs with Fcitx in any app I've used it
in-- gedit, TB, Libre Office. The issue is that when Fcitx is enabled
and one is typing, then as we know, sometimes the need arises to disable
Fcitx to type a few English words, and then again enable Fcitx to resume
typing the other language. Well, what happens is that when one has typed
a word in Fcitx which ends in a consonant, and then hits space to create
a separation between the last word and the next word, then if at that
point one does ctrl-space to disable Fcitx, the final letter of the
previous word gets erased.

The reason I see this happening is that up to that moment, the line
underneath the previous word's last letter is still there, indicating
that although I've hit the space bar, Fcitx still hasn't let go of the
previous word's last letter-- and so when I do ctrl-space, that last
letter gets deleted. It doesn't happen with all words; if the last word
ends in what is called an inherent "a"--which is very often the case in
Hindi, Bengali, and Sanskrit-- then it happens. So for example if I type
"arjun" and then hit space, by hitting space the keymap adds an inherent
"a" to the end so it becomes "arjuna" whithout having to have typed the
last "a". In that situation, having typed "arjun" and then hit space, if
I then do ctrl-space to disable fcitx, the letter "n" of "arjun" gets
deleted. This never happened when I was using scim, and it doesn't
happen in ibus-- so I suspect it is an issue in Fcitx. Scim and ibus are
not working properly in Ubuntu 14.04, so I have switched to Fcitx. This
bug affects many users and needs to be repaired.

Thanks,
Swarup

[Bug 1315579] Re: When using scim-m17n in gedit, the backspace and delete keys are dysfunctional

2014-05-06 Thread Swarup Dev
It may be that the problem is due to the way the current scim
architecture interacts with gedit-- rather than the m17n package. This
indeed seems likely, for the following reasons:

1) m17n package works fine in gedit when used through ibus or Fcitx. So
it is specifically scim that is unable to utilize m17n properly in
gedit.

2) The very same problem with scim and defective functionality of
backspace and delete keys, is found when typing in Nemo file browser.
For example if one is renaming a file in Nemo using scim, then the
backspace and delete keys are dysfunctional.

2014-05-03 Thread Swarup Dev
Note: In order to get scim-m17n functional in 14.04:
1. Install scim
2. Install scim-m17n

[Bug 1315579] [NEW] When using scim-m17n in gedit, the backspace and delete keys are dysfunctional

2014-05-02 Thread Swarup Dev
Public bug reported:

scim-m17n is an input method used for typing many languages, especially
those with complex characters.

With scim-m17n enabled in gedit, when one presses the backspace or
delete key, then instead of performing the expected work, the cursor
simply moves one space ahead and places "" there. Actually when I
paste that sign here, it is just an empty box. But there in gedit the
box contains four digits arranged in two rows: "0008" for backspace, and
"007F" for delete. I have attached a screenshot to illustrate more
clearly.

With scim-m17n is enabled, when one presses the backspace key when gets
a result equivalent to typing: 0008

With scim-m17n is enabled, when one presses the delete key when gets a
result equivalent to typing: 007F

This behaviour is evident only in gedit. When using scim-m17n in Libre
Office, Thunderbird, and other applications, the backspace and delete
keys work normally.

In gedit with scim-m17n enabled, all the other instructional keys like
insert, home, end, page up, page down-- these all work normally.

I have been using scim-m17n since 2007, and this was never an issue
until installing Ubuntu 14.04 which ships with gedit version 3.10.4.

This issue is a serious problem for those working with scim in gedit.

[Bug 1312517] [NEW] scim-m17n not working in Ubuntu 14.04

2014-04-24 Thread Swarup Dev
Public bug reported:

After installing the scim-m17n software, the languages are not available
for use in scim. Even after activating scim, only English is available.
All the Asian and other non-European languages which become availalbe
through m17n, are remain unlisted. Of note, in a comment on this site
[http://askubuntu.com/questions/165980/scim-input-method-not-
working/454912#454912], Robert Siemer writes: "I could fix scim-m17n by
moving m17n.so from /usr/lib/scim-1.0/1.4.0/IMEngine/ to /usr/lib/i386
-linux-gnu/scim-1.0/1.4.0/IMEngine/". However I tried this, and it
doesn't seem to have made any difference.

It should be added that for many writers of Asian languages, this scim-
m17n is critically important to their work. I am one of those; for many
years I have been typing using this system, and there is no viable
alternative. The Ibus system does not provide for proper formatting of
what is typed. So it is vitally important that this scim-m17n be made to
work in 14.04. - Swarup
