[Bug 1389732] [NEW] The computer freeze randomly
Public bug reported: The freeze problem actually started when I was using 12.04 LTS. Every time when I was login to the desktop (after the computer is completely shut down) , the screen glitches and freezes. However, when I restart the computer, the problem went away. Everything is normal again. This happened in every desktop environment that I have used (Gnome, Unity, Xfce). The problem getting worst after few days where I need to restart the computer twice (sometime 3 times) in order to make the system calm down. So, I think it was the driver problem, and I changed the VGA driver to its propriety Nvidia driver, but no avail. In fact, it getting worst. Then, I thought maybe the system not stable, so I upgrade the system to 14.04. But the problem still persist. Again, I installed the Nvdia driver again, it seem to work but eventually it also no avail. The problem seem more serious under Nvdia driver. And I revert back to the opensource driver. It works, but only in xfce environment. It also freeze if I using other environment. It's okay for me to use xfce, but the thing is when I try to play the "Nibbles" (which I think it is preinstalled in 14.04), not long I played, it freeze again. I also thought this might be the hardware problem, maybe it is the onboard vga card got something wrong with it. After All, I have been using this computer for 5 years. But, when i using Window 7 (using dual boot), it's never be the problem. Everything is working fine in Window 7. So, the hardware issue, ruled out. Hope you can help. I tested the kernel 3.13 and the problem still exists. The tags are updated. I would also tend to blame the access point though an Android phone and a Windows laptop are sharing the access point and both remain connected when the Ubuntu laptop fails. [Bug 935778] Re: Various Toshiba laptops - brightness controls work on first boot, but do nothing after suspend/resume to RAM.
I am experiencing the same problem. I'm on a Dell XPS ultrabook with the Dell Sputnik PPAs. In my case, I hibernate the computer (I do not suspend) bu the symptoms are the same. Also, after coming back from hibernation, the bluetooth widget shows that bluetooth is enabled even though I had disabled it before going into hibernation. # uname -a Linux hostname 3.2.0-38-generic-pae #61+kamal14~DellXPS-Ubuntu SMP Fri Feb 22 20:53:54 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/935778 Title: Various Toshiba laptops - brightness controls work on first boot, but do nothing after suspend/resume to RAM. [Bug 553422] Re: logrotate will not work on apache2 logs when using weekly rotation
It seems that things may be working now. I'm not sure why, but suddenly they started rotating. There are only three things I have done differently since my initial post. First, I configured the system to do automatic time synchronization using this tutorial https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/serverguide/C/NTP.html. Second, I installed the latest tzdata update. Third, I restarted apache2. Not sure why restarting apache2 would matter since I have rebooted the entire system before to see if that would fix it. Also, it worked with daily schedules without rebooting. I'm just not sure why it suddenly started working and has for the past two Sunday's now. ** Changed in: logrotate (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- logrotate will not work on apache2 logs when using weekly rotation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553422 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 553422] [NEW] logrotate will not work on apache2 logs when using weekly rotation
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: logrotate I started a thread on the issue here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1441929 and it was suggested that I should file a bug report. The problem is that logrotate does not work on apache2 log files when the rotation is set to weekly. It works when set to daily, though. Here's the output of uname -a: Linux db1 2.6.24-27-server #1 SMP Fri Mar 12 01:23:09 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux It's an install of Ubuntu 64-bit server running 8.04.4 with all updates installed as of 3/27/2010. Here's the contents of /etc/logrotate.conf ** BEGIN ** # see "man logrotate" for details # rotate log files weekly weekly # keep 4 weeks worth of backlogs rotate 4 # create new (empty) log files after rotating old ones create # uncomment this if you want your log files compressed #compress # packages drop log rotation information into this directory include /etc/logrotate.d # no packages own wtmp, or btmp -- we'll rotate them here /var/log/wtmp { missingok monthly create 0664 root utmp } /var/log/btmp { missingok monthly create 0664 root utmp } # system-specific logs may be configured here ** END ** Here are the contents of /etc/logrotate.d/apache2 ** BEGIN ** /var/log/apache2/*.log /var/log/apache2/portal/*.log { weekly missingok rotate 52 nocompress notifempty create 640 root adm sharedscripts postrotate if [ -f "`. /etc/apache2/envvars ; echo ${APACHE_PID_FILE:-/var/run/apache2.pid}`" ]; then /etc/init.d/apache2 reload > /dev/null fi endscript } ** END ** The access.log and error.log files are just continuing to grow. The access.log file, for example, is now 1.1MB (the system will not be in production for another 2 to 4 weeks and is just in testing phase right now). With the /etc/logrotate.d/apache2 rotation set to weekly, it won't rotate, but with it set to daily it does. ** Affects: logrotate (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- logrotate will not work on apache2 logs when using weekly rotation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553422 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 370487] Re: df -a contradicts Disk Usage Analyzer.
Let's extract the important numbers from #2's Screenshot.png: 294.9 total, 154.4 used, 140.6 free Looking at the output of df, I can see *three* things which are non-tmpfs/procfs/sysfs/devfs: Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /host/ubuntu/disks/root.disk 13457172 5233116 7540464 41% / /dev/sda5147902388 78323520 69578868 53% /host /host/ubuntu/disks/boot 147902388 78323520 69578868 53% /boot If you sum these, you get 309261948 (294.935 GB), 161880156 (154.381 GB), 146698200 (139.902 GB). The discrepancy in "free" space is because some filesystems (ext2/3) typically reserve some space for use by root so that some things will keep working even if a normal user manages to fill the filesystem. / is "missing" 683592 K (about 5.08%). >From the sizes, it looks like /dev/sda5 (/host) and /host/ubuntu/disks/boot (/boot) are actually the same filesystem. I'm not sure how that works, but clearly baobab isn't detecting that they're duplicates. [Bug 453813] [NEW] QuickAccess does not display latest Folder listings
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: plasma-widget-quickaccess In Ubuntu Karmic beta the QuickAccess Widget does not display the latest Folder listings. Due to some problems with NFS boot scripts I have to mount my NFS shares by hand. Then QuickAccess always and Dolphin sometimes(?) display empty folders where my shares should be - even when mounting the file systems went well. In Dolphin pressing F5 resolves the problem, while QuickAccess still displays empty folders. The problem is 100% reproducible on my machine. [Bug 420810] Re: gnome-about-me picture does not appear at login
Thanks, arky. I did attempt to identify the package name using apport (I thought that was the Alt-F2 option where I entered ubuntu-bug gnome- about-me), and the Help menu function doesn't exist in the application. I used the System Monitor utility to find the name of the process which is why I labeled it as gnome-about-me as that is what was listed in System Monitor. I also Googled for gnome-about-me and also went to the Ubuntu package list website to try to find the correct name of the package, but could not find it. If you could provide other steps for me to identify the package name, I would be glad to find and report that name. [Bug 420810] [NEW] gnome-about-me picture does not appear at login
Public bug reported: I'm using Ubuntu Karmic Alphpa 4 and under System/Preferences there is a tool called "About Me" (i.e., gnome-about-me). In the upper left-hand corner there is a "Select your photo" option that allows you to set a picture for your profile. However, when I select a photo (picked one from the list presented to me), I still get the same default icon at the login screen instead of the one I selected. [Bug 363544] Re: Monitor not detected and running at very low resolution
I don't know why it works, but as a temporary fix I am now using the VGA port on my monitor instead of the DVI port, with a VGA cable, that is connected to the DVI port on my video card using a VGA-to-DVI adapter. [Bug 363544] Re: Monitor not detected and running at very low resolution
** Description changed: The Jaunty release candidate does not seem to be setting the system to use my monitor correctly. I have a Dell Inspirion 530N that I bought from Dell with Ubuntu installed already and have not had a problem with screen resolution until Jaunty (worked well with 7.10, 8.04, and 8.10). The system has a Nvidia GeForce 8600GT connected to a ViewSonic VX2025wm monitor. Jaunty would only allow low resolution of 640x480 during install which I thought would be remedied after installing the Nvidia drivers through Jaunty's hardware detection/driver feature. Also, I could not use the "Install Ubuntu" option from the CD as the system locked. Instead, to install I had to use the "Try Ubuntu..." function to install. After install, the screen flashes several times and finally displays an error dialogue of: "The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to resolve this. (EE) NV(0): No valid initial configuration found (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration." I then go through a series of other error message windows and prompts regarding the low resolution and am finally able to login using 640x480. After installing all the available updates and the recommended Nvidia drivers, the problem will not go away. Here is what is in my xorg.conf file: Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Configured Monitor" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Configured Monitor" Device "Configured Video Device" EndSection I tried running the command "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg", but this did not fix the problem. As I said, this problem did not exist in prior versions of Ubuntu. The system is "clean" so I have no problem reinstalling or attempting whatever troubleshooting efforts are needed. + + UPDATE: After doing a lot of Googling on the phrase "(EE) NV(0): No + valid initial configuration found", many people seem to think this is a + kernel issue. Since this is a fresh install of Ubuntu Jaunty Release + Candidate, I have no prior kernel version to try. [Bug 254468] Re: momentary video garbage upon drawing new objects
I'd just like to point out that this bug is more than a cosmetic issue, it has privacy implications, as well. Anything displayed on screen at any time may be viewed again minutes, hours, or in some cases days later by any user. Usually, it's just a brief 1 second flash, but in extreme cases when there is lots of I/O activity, the old video memory can be displayed for minutes at a time. The worst case I've seen is probably the default KDE locked screen saver that appears after waking a machine up from suspend mode. The slightly garbled contents of old video memory are displayed for the world to see indefinitely while the screen saver waits for a user to enter a password. An account is not even needed to peek at what was being displayed on screen previously. -- momentary video garbage upon drawing new objects https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/254468 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 303611] [NEW] Multiple X sessions plus desktop effects cause blank KDE4 desktop
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace Hello, KDE4 using desktop effects works great on Intrepid for one instance of X and KDE, but any additional instance of KDE with desktop effects enabled started shows only a blank screen. The problem only occurs when desktop effects are enabled with OpenGL chosen as the compositing type. It does not matter if a different user is launching X or whether they are launching through startx or KDM - if desktop effects are enabled in one KDE session and another is launched the additional session is blank and unusable (unless desktop effects are disabled for the new session). In other words, one session per machine can use desktop effects and afterwards any session that tries just results in a blank screen, similar to the one described in #182288. I do not believe this is a duplicate bug. (This bug == desktop effects work once, that bug == desktop effects work never) Steps to reproduce: 1. Start KDE4 session as any user with desktop effects enabled and OpenGL selected as compositing type. 2. See that desktop effects function properly. 3. Repeat step 1. 4. See that the new session is blank/black for the most part. 5. Switch to the first session. 6. See that it still is functioning properly. Expected behavior: 1. Start KDE4 session as any user with desktop effects enabled and OpenGL selected as compositing type. 2. Start another KDE4 session as any user with desktop effects enabled and OpenGL selected as compositing type. 3. Both sessions work. [Bug 251304] [NEW] Pidgin XMPP TLS/SSL Man in the Middle attack
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** Public security bug reported: Binary package hint: pidgin It looks like this bug was reported in Launchpad some time ago, but for the wrong package. I'd love to see it fixed. Here's the original text: As per http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/3381 the Pidgin IM client does not properly implement SSL and TLS, particularly components dealing with feedback to the end user. The client gives the end user no method of determining the validity of the certificate; in cases where a server presents invalid or self-signed certificates, Pidgin operates as normal. As a result, any man-in-the- middle attack can handshake with the server and with the client (using a fake certificate) and perform a decrypt-recrypt process to read the data-- including message text and plaintext passwords-- in plain text. No proof of concept for this specific attack exists.
