[Bug 477430] Re: grub 2 error: out of disk. failed to boot default entries. press any key to continue...

2011-08-11 Thread TDB
I tried Fedora 15 on a fresh HDD. Used default partitioning with an LVM
-- same problem, GRUB fails to boot me with the same symptoms. Fedora 15
too uses GRUB 0.99. Rolled back to Ubuntu 10.10 with GRUB 0.97 -- works
like a charm. IMO the problem is clearly somewhere in v0.97 < GRUB <=
v0.99

[Bug 477430] Re: grub 2 error: out of disk. failed to boot default entries. press any key to continue...

2011-08-02 Thread TDB
I too experience the issue.
I have been carrying my root+home+swap partitions from version to version no
problem until 10.10 and 11.04; Now I have to boot livecd first, then restart,
and boot from HDD.

Has anyone reported that to grub2 as a bug?

+1
It only affects the Y mouse coordinate. I noticed that when it "happens" I can
only click the lower part of the button. In Chrome I have click slightly above
the hyperlinks. The problem is always gone after moving the window hosting the
button(s)/links on the screen. I suspect that the height of the menu bar (that
is now moved from the window onto the panel in Unity) is still sometimes
included in the Y calculations causing the problem.

Same here!
@Chase Douglas: I don't know what you're talking about... what hard
switches? There are no hard switches in these laptops. Just throw in 9.04 or
windows and the "hard locks" are magically gone... I hope this rings a bell.

@All: Unfortunately this is likely a kernel bug. My personal experience with
bugs like this is that no one from Ubuntu team is capable of fixing those.
This type of problems tends to go away with fresh kernel releases... Someone
from Ubuntu will pop up here once in a while with "Is it still in Ubuntu
X.XX?" and that's it. Move on, nothing to report here...

[Bug 249218] [NEW] External USB enclosure not detected

2008-07-16 Thread TDB
Public bug reported:

Hi!

PC: Toshiba Satellite p205 laptop
Enclosure: Acomdata Samba USB SATA/PATA enclosure with Hitachi SATA2 500GB
drive.
Ubuntu: Hardy
Kernel: 2.6.24-16-generic, 2.6.24-19-generic

When hot-plugged in the enclosure is not detected. No /dev/* device created.
Dmesg shows errors.
When cold-plugged (before boot) it is detected as /dev/sdb.
'sudo modprobe -r ehci_hcd' allows to hot-plug the enclosure once and works at
~1mb/s speed (USB 1.0?)
'lsusb' does not always list the device (it may appear on one call and
disappear on subsequent calls)

However, hot-plugging the same enclosure to my Ubuntu Hardy desktop works as
expected 100%.
Thank you.

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-05-19 Thread TDB
I FOUND A WAY TO 100% REPRODUCE THE CRASH on my laptop:
Toshiba Satellite p205 (atheros+madwifi, intel945+intel, using wicd)
1) connect to any wireless network
2) suspend to RAM
3) resume
4) enter password
5) wait 3-7 sec and observe a lockup.
The lockups differ from time to time: mouse cursor may or may not freeze, HDD
led may/may not blink, portions of the GUI may/may not respond to mouse
movement for a couple of seconds more.
If you omit step 1 there is never a lockup. Also no lockup at resume/password
prompt screen.
2.6.22 kernel does not recover video on resume for me (but used to be OK on
real gutsy install).

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-05-18 Thread TDB
I experience lockups with Hardy release on BOTH my laptop (Toshiba
Satellite p205: atheros, intel 945) and desktop (atheros, nvidia). Both
were rock stable in Gutsy and back. The only thing in common is madwifi.
When it happens, the mouse, screen etc. is locked up. No screen garbage.
I'm experiencing it very randomly but most of the time during heavy
network load (both wired/ wireless) or Firefox page scrolling. My uptime
ranges from several days to several hours. Very frustrating...

Reopening that: appeared again. This time I was able to capture the log with

A note: this bug is directly related to inability to scale video: when I launch

After applying those fixes on Java 5, the applets work most of the time.
Sometimes the don't, sometimes they hang Firefox with 100% CPU consumption.

@Tim Hull:
I'm afraid to make things even more complicated in this situation... But
here are my results: 2.6.22-10 = no problem, 2.6.22-12 = had 1 random
hangup on resume, 2.6.22-14 = no problem. Testing method: tried 5
suspend/resume cycles on each kernel with XV and glxgears. I recall I
had the same hangups a couple of times before (1/20 rate or so) so it
has nothing to do with intel driver recent "loop fix". For me it looks
like kernel + X issue and is very obscure and random. This one looks
orthogonal to gray blocks. With recent "fixed" intel driver I have no
more gray blocks problem with any tested kernel. Thanks.

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-11 Thread TDB
@ramas
AFAIK modern drives are able to handle high temps just fine. Up to 75 C is OK.
More over, 2,5" HDDs produce max 2 wats of heat on idle spin, so unless you
keep the lead of your laptop closed and the HDD spinning overnight, you won't
have any heat problems.

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-05 Thread TDB
Here is how I permanently fixed it:

1) make a file named "99-hdd-spin-fix.sh". The important thing is starting with
"99".
2) make sure the file contains the following 2 lines (fix it if you have PATA
HDD):
#!/bin/sh
hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda
3) copy this file to 3 locations:
/etc/acpi/suspend.d/
/etc/acpi/resume.d/
/etc/acpi/start.d/

Voila! After that the HDD never spins down on power (looks like it actually
spins down on battery at modest rate).
Sorry if the instruction is too detailed, no offense.

nothing unusual in xorg.conf, all default

Symptoms: 50% of times I reboot or suspend xorg hangs with random

Please tell me if you want tome more info from me (no idea if there's

[Bug 135325] text jumps in firefox

2007-08-28 Thread TDB
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

When selecting text on a web-page, the selected text sometimes (as often
as on 50% page loads) shifts 1-2pixels up/down and/or left/right.
Sometimes the whole selection shifts, sometimes it's only one letter on
the edge of current selection, sometimes both. Inline images are also
affected. Text/icon on bookmarks bar is also affected. Some GUI elements
(drop-down button to the right of address field, the search-engine-
select drop-down button to the left of the search field) are affected.

This is very annoying! I noticed this with Gusty only.
firefox 2.0.0.6+2-0ubuntu3
firefox-gnome-spport 2.0.0.6+2-0ubuntu3
kernel 2.6.22.10-generic

[Bug 88546] Re: headphones jack doesn't mute speakers on lenovo 3000 n100

2007-08-09 Thread TDB
Update on Toshiba satellite P205:

After recent update of Ubuntu the problem seems to be solved.
2.6.22-9-generic (package version 2.6.22-9.25)
alsa-base 1.0.14 (package version 1.0.14.1ubuntu1)

File ' /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base' contains the following line:

options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo

How it's working now:
 * Muting 'front' channel mutes the speakers
 * Changing 'front' level (volume) with volume weel un-mutes the speakers
 * Plugging headphones into the front jack mutes the speakers
 * Unplugging the headphones un-mutes the speakers
 * Checking 'headphones' mixer option actually gives sound to the front jack

Mic, front mic, mic boosts also work as intended.

[Bug 129367] "Dim screen" displayed when not supposed to

2007-07-30 Thread TDB
Public bug reported:

Laptop Toshiba Satellite P205. Battery detected OK. Operating on AC
power. AC power detected OK.

Power management settings: On AC: "dim display when idle" = false, "set display
brightness to" = 100%
What happens: leaving the box inactive for a minute displays a "dim screen"
popup (the one with a "sea-mine" and a %meter) that shows 100%. Actually no
dimming happens: from 100% to 100% but the popup is annoying. Moreover, why is
dimming triggered since it's disabled in the settings?

Thanks!

Gilles, thanks! The first workaround that actually works.

IMO, modifying hdparm.conf has no effect because the "last word" is said by

I've also added the same script to /etc/acpi/start.d/

Oh... now with kernel 2.6.22 (emergency unloads on shutdown fixed) and
