[Bug 1452616] Re: Ubuntu Web Browser identified as old Safari in gmail

2016-04-29 Thread Terry Relph-Knight
Hmm - just playing with the new BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition tablet.
Opened the Ubuntu browser and got a Google log in page, logged in and
sure enough a bit later got a warning from Google that someone had tried
a Safari log in on my account. Yet another aspect of Ubuntu and this
tablet that shows it ain't ready yet.

[Bug 1436944] [NEW] Nautilus file manager uncertain or incorrect responses

2015-03-26 Thread Terry Relph-Knight
Public bug reported:

Since the release and my installations of 14.10, Nautilus (now 3.10.1)
has not responded to commands as reliably as it used to. I find that,
for example, clicking on the File menu in an application such as
LibreOffice Write, may either produce no response, or may cause a
currently maximised window to minimise. It may take several attempted
clicks to actually drop down the File menu.

With a file manager window, clicking on the Documents choice may open
something else such as Home.

Basically the file management just seems generally flaky in its
responses. Sensing of cursor positon and mouse button input seems
uncertain.

I was hoping this would be straightened out by an update (I apply
updates almost as soon as they are available) but this hasn't happened.

I have 14.10 installed on two systems and they both show this odd behaviour. I
have menus set to appear in windows title bar.
I have not tried switching them to the desktop menu bar.

[Bug 1388169] Re: Keyboard Input Methods crashes on every startup

2014-12-24 Thread Terry Relph-Knight
This still isn't fixed nearly 2 months after launch and it's unassigned.
It must be affecting much more than six people. I have three machines
with very different hardware and it happens on all of them. It does seem
as though Canonical really doesn't care about the desktop any more. Yes
you can just relaunch and things sort of work but there does seem to be
a problem with the USB routines. I've noticed my mouse responding in
very erratic ways. I'm assuming that is realted to this bug although
perhaps it is yet another bug.

[Bug 1202754] Re: update-manager crashed with SystemExit in exit(): 0

2014-04-02 Thread Terry Relph-Knight
Only seems to happen if I expand something in the details panel first.
Then if authentication is required the authentication input box does not
appear and update crashes. If I then run it again and don't expand
anything the authentication input appears, I authenticate and update
proceeds as normal.

Re: [Bug 1283741] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)

2014-02-25 Thread Terry Relph-Knight
Christopher,

This is the first time I have ever seen this problem with any version of
Ubuntu on the DELL XPS M1210.

Previously versions up to and including Ubuntu 13.10 worked just fine.
Perhaps I should say that I did not perform a clean install. I used the
Software Updater to 'upgrade' to 14.04 while it was still in alpha.

I did have it installed. I removed it and Update check now seems to

So maybe it is really fixed now (I did remember to re-boot this time).

Tim - I hate to say this but - following a cold boot this morning that
PPA problem is back. I must not have tested for it as rigorously as I
should. I probably forgot to do a reboot but just checked for updates
after re-naming that file.

And pidgin-ppa.list

Anyhow, if I rm all of those files I can see that they go from

Are we done? Is this a general bug or just a strange quirk/artefact of

 Try this. Run:

 gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pidgin-ppa.list

Comment(#) out the lines in there so it looks like this:

 #deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu oneiric main
 #deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu oneiric main

Then save the file, close it, and in a terminal run:

 sudo apt-get update

Then look in the update-manager again to see if pidgin is still there.

Followed your instructions - when I ran the Update Manager for the first
time I did not get the 'Failed to download repository' message and the
update proceeded normally. When I looked in the Other Software entries
tab I could see the two Pidgin entries were still there but un-checked.
I cannot now remember if at any point I had tried de-selecting them
using the check mark rather than just trying a removal. However
following a re-boot the entries are back checked and I see the 'Failed
to download repository' message again. Those little buggers just won't
go away. BTW - I can't see it would make any difference but I am running
the GNOME 2 shell on 11.10.

This is now the permanent state of my system following the upgrade from
11.04 to 11.10. When I perform the deletion it appears to work, but it
does not persist.
Despite repeated attempts to edit the Other Software sources list
through both the Software Centre or via Synaptic, the removed entries
re-appear following a re-boot and the - Last updated - displays as the
last time I attempted the removal rather than the last time I update.
As also mentioned I cannot edit any of my software reviews entries in
the Software Centre. Any edit results in a - Edit failure - message.

[Bug 890536] [NEW] Entries that are deleted from the Other software list just reappear.

2011-11-14 Thread Terry Relph-Knight
Public bug reported:

When running 'check for updates' in the Update Manager it objects to two
PPA entries for Pidgin in the 'other software' list. If I try deleting
these the deletion lasts while Update Manager is open, but when closed
and re-opened these entries re-appear.

I have a perhaps related problem with adding software reviews in the
Software Centre. I can post reviews but once posted I cannot edit them.

[Bug 621881] [NEW] [line6usb - GuitarPort] Recording problem

2010-08-21 Thread Terry Relph-Knight
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64bit with all the latest patches applied running
on an AMD64 dual core box. I followed the instructions on this web page
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-install-line6-guitarport-in-ubuntu.html
to install the Line6 GuitarPort - a USB audio interface (I realise this
is not and official Ubuntu supported patch). I can see the GuitarPort as
a device in System - Preferences - Sound Preferences but cannot get an
audio input to register on the input level display.
