I had the same problem with Karmic UNR on an EEE 901 pc. Neither the internal microphone nor the plug on the side were working. Walkaround was installing the linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and rebooting. Then installing the pavumeter application. I had to open pavumeter, go to the input tab and then the microphone started working in all applications (including Skype). I'm assuming pavumeter resets or does something to pulseaudio that makes the mic work. I previously tried changing capture volume levels in alsamixer, but it made no difference. [Bug 398687] Re: Gnome shutdown dialog timeout cannot be adjusted
I was going to set it to 0 seconds, actually. There's just no reason for me to have the confirmation box at all. I'm used to hitting shutdown and then walking away from the computer and let it do its thing. It's also annoying on my laptops because I hit shutdown and then close the lid before the dialog appears, because it takes a couple seconds to show up. And sometimes it goes into suspend instead because it hasn't started the shutdown process when the lid closes. Most frustrating of all, however, is that I have problems with some ubuntu virtual machines running in Virtualbox that sometimes seize up and refuse to accept keyboard or mouse inputs. I can still send it the shutdown signal through Virtualbox' interface, but then I have to sit and stare at the dialog counting down for a whole minute before the VM can be restarted. Basically I want it gone/customizable for the same reason I set my GRUB countdown to 1 second as well; in 99.99% of cases I want the default behavior without being nagged. -- Gnome shutdown dialog timeout cannot be adjusted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/398687 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 398687] [NEW] Gnome shutdown dialog timeout cannot be adjusted
Public bug reported: With the new gnome comes the 'system will shutdown in 60 seconds' nag dialog, which I'm sure is wonderful for laptop users who accidentally press the button, but it's annoying otherwise. I have searched for a way to turn it off, or set the timeout to a much lower value. Something like 2-3 seconds would be bearable, but I can't find any option to do this. There's nothing in the gnome power manager, I can't find any mention of it in gconf either. I've looked through forums of other people asking for this, someone said they even looked through the source code of the shutdown dialog, but couldn't figure out how it works because it's just a widget-like thing (?) There should be a way to change the timeout value. At this point I don't care if it's a value hidden in a conf file somewhere without any user interface, I just want to bloody change it. ** Affects: meta-gnome2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gnome shutdown dialog timeout cannot be adjusted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/398687 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file
@Cody Russell I'm not exactly sure how my comment is not as useful as the others just because I have an opposing opinion. I'm not saying I'm not used to the renaming functionality, I'm saying it's unbelievably stupid UI design and at the very least I would like a Nautilus preference option to turn this off. This is a prime example of one of the early windows UI bugs that have been forced down people's throats for so many years that they've gotten used to it. If you want hard data on this, try to actually count the number of times per day on windows/mac when Explorer puts you into rename mode and this isn't what you wanted. It happens so often that you don't even notice anymore. And distinguishing between icon and label is not a good solution because that makes the selection area too small to be useful (especially in list and compact view) and you always end up clicking on the label the second time anyway because this is big and easy to click and better symbolizes the file you're trying to manipulate. -- Cannot rename by clicking on a file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48671 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 61237] Re: Drag 'n Drop in list view doesn't work
I second this bug, this has been a source of endless annoyance for years! I don't like to use the words Windows and Usability in the same sentence, but they've actually solved this user interface idiocy very easily by the DnD selecting the folder you're in (not any of the subfolders) when you move the mouse to a column different from the name one, i.e. every other column (type, date, permission, owner, group, etc.) is treated as whitespace for DnD. This makes sense because you're no longer pointing directly at a directory where you want to drop the files. The error Nautilus makes is to assume that there is an invisible row all the way across the interface. Which means that when your DnD is pointing at for instance the 'type' column, Nautilus is still going to drop your files in the folder that the row corresponds to. -- Drag 'n Drop in list view doesn't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/61237 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file
For the love of all that is holy, DO NOT IMPLEMENT THIS! This was a stupid idea in Windows and it'll be a stupid idea in Ubuntu. When I click a file, 99.999% of times it's because I want to select it. Not rename it. And the moment the UI is just slightly unresponsive, or when I have selected the file and then realize I want to drag and drop it so I click it again, or a million other situations where I accidentally click the file twice, the rename idiocy is going to be activated instead. I think renaming a file is to be regarded as more intrusive an action than selecting it and it's good to have to right-click or press F2 to show that renaming it is actually what you want to do. -- Cannot rename by clicking on a file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48671 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 372461] Re: Jaunty Remix should be available as .iso file
I whole heartedly agree. Using an .img file is madness! I realize the target for the distro is USB sticks, but why is it a problem to use an .iso file for this? I've had to help several people figure out how to burn UNR to a CD because they couldn't figure out how to put an .img file on a USB stick and I don't blame them. Let me summarize my recent experience in trying to get UNR on my laptop: * The default USB writing app in Ubuntu (administration-create a USB startup disk) does NOT support .img files. * The default CD writing app Brasero does NOT support .img files. * The help page (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromImgFiles) recommends something called ImageWriter, I don't know where to find this thing and I shouldn't have to. * More importantly, the suggested Windows app (Win32 Disk Imager) is a pre-alpha POS that fails with error 8 (no further info) on every computer I've tried. The alternative is a Windows commandline tool from Russia with no discernible connection to Ubuntu, the instructions are in Russian, and some forums warn that it'll corrupt the images. Alternatively, I've just tested six other netbook distros (Puppy Linux, Easy Peasy, Xubuntu, Cruncheee, Debian EEE, eeebuntu) on a USB stick without any issues at all using Unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) which is cross-platform and just works. In my experience there is no solid cross-platform GUI tool available that makes it easy to handle .img files. And I don't mind using commandline tools like 'dd' on Linux, but forcing me to use them on Windows is just evil. -- Jaunty Remix should be available as .iso file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/372461 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can confirm this bug. I've been running Ubuntu on my L20 ever since Feisty Fawn and updated every release since then and suspend has never worked. It still doesn't work in Jaunty now. Previously I've assumed it had something to do with the ATI linux drivers and it was the graphics chip that prevented everything from resuming, but after finding this bug report and re-reading it, I think it might be something else. The laptop suspends to RAM and the power light flashes slowly it is should, but the laptop never awakens again. When you push the power button to resume, the hard disk spins up briefly, the dvd drive makes a noise (the same noise it makes during BIOS boot), and the CPU fan spins up and keeps running. However, the screen never turns on and as far as I can tell, the OS isn't running. I've tried running a music player, suspending, and then resuming and pushing the hotkey to resume the music, but nothing happens. @Arngren and Daves Wait, so.. because the 3D bling-bling desktop doesn't work, you're recommending people use Windows XP? Did I completely misunderstand something, or are you actually spouting gibberish? Damn, if I had abandoned Windows every time something broke down, I wouldn't have made it past Win 3.11. If you can't get work done because Compiz keeps crashing, here's an idea: DISABLE COMPIZ! It's not like it's a vital part of Ubuntu, especially on a freakin' laptop with integrated graphics chips. Oh, and just for the record, ATI's proprietary drivers for Windows aren't much better. It appears that ATI just doesn't understand their own hardware well enough to actually write a driver for it. [Bug 108527] Re: X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI cards
I can confirm a similar issue on a fresh installation of Gutsy. I have the ATI card FireGL V7200 and dual monitors. I cannot set a higher resolution than 800x600 on these screens without using the proprietary ATI drivers. Even the drivers in the Restricted Manager or in Synaptic do not work at all, I have to 'compile' the original proprietary drivers downloaded from ATI's website using the instructions on the Linux ATI Wiki: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Gutsy_Installation_Guide#Method_2:_Install_the_Catalyst_7.12_Driver_Manually I have the problem that Compiz freezes completely (no Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, no Ctrl+Alt+F1 to a terminal) after about 30 seconds after logging in. The mouse is still active and can move around, but cannot interact with the desktop at all. The only solution is to hard reboot the computer on the power button and usually after two or three attempts, everything works perfect and continues to do so all day. (!) In other words, the freeze ONLY occurs right after login, or it does not occur at all. And it ALWAYS occurs after a PROPER shutdown. I can only assume that when the computer freezes and I cut the power and reboot, something that was not loaded properly the last time goes into some failsafe or default mode, which actually makes Compiz work as it should. I have never managed to get Compiz working after a proper shutdown on this machine, it's only when I reboot it in mid-login that it has a (small) chance of working correctly on the next startup. -- X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI cards https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/108527 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 63830] Re: Open office crashes and takes Xgl with it
I can confirm this bug. I'm running a completely fresh install of Ubuntu Edgy Eft on a Toshiba laptop with an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M integrated graphics card. This happens only in an XGL session, not in an ordinary Gnome session. The first few times I tried to open an Openoffice document file, XGL crashed and sent me back to session login. When logging in again there was a huge crash report (some 18MB). The crash reports stopped coming when the computer started freezing until I do a hard reboot. The screen freezes with artifacts that clearly show an error with the graphics card. Abiword crashes in the same manner. There is one odd thing about this, however. I went to another computer and resaved the same document, but with the Web Layout view turned OFF so that I could see each page. It's about a 130 page document. When I opened the document again in XGL, it did not crash and everything worked fine. I tried opening and closing it several times, rebooting, logging out and back into the session, I can't make it crash again. Something about the Web Layout view seems to kill the graphics driver. Even in ordinary Gnome, OpenOffice always churns a lot when you open a long document in Web Layout.
