[Bug 1731754] [NEW] cal command accepts no flags

2017-11-12 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

The command "cal -m" dose not work, but should. Writing just "cal"
works. Seems like there is a problem with the flag parsing. I tested it
also with Ubuntu bionic, the bug is present there too.

[Bug 1592558] Re: Installed snaps not visible in fish-shell on Fedora 23

2016-06-15 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
'zkrynicki' mentioned on Reddit that apps-bin-path.sh has been renamed
to snapd.sh in the non-git version.

** Description changed:

System: Fedora 23, 64-Bit, Wayland, GOME

After installing snapd as described on http://snapcraft.io for Fedora
23, I installed the 'krita' snap. When using fish-shell the command
- 'krita' can not be found, but when using bash everthing is fine. Also
- /etc/profile.d/apps-bin-path.sh file does not exsist, but as fare as I
- know it should (there is only snapd.sh).

Seems like it is a fish problem, because fish does not source
/etc/profile.d (can't read *.sh files).

[Bug 1568463] [NEW] GPS always on after start-up

2016-04-10 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

Device: Meizu MX4 OTA-10

I noticed that after starting my device the GPS toggle button inside
battery-settings is always on, even if I set it to off previously.

Confusingly the position-tracking is off in Security/Location settings.
I wonder if the GPS is really on, and if yes, how much battery power is
lost thereby.

How it should be:
When the user turns GPS off, it should be off on next reboot, too.

[Bug 1555713] [NEW] reduce flickering by 'debouncing' user input

2016-03-10 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

Problem
---
Every time the user changes the content of the search-bar the Dash updates its
result-view. When typing, this results in result-view screen flickering.

Common solution for this problem
---
Is to cache the last user-input and search only after a delay, as long as there
has been no new user input. This function is called 'Debounce' in ReactiveX ->
http://reactivex.io/documentation/operators/debounce.html

Pros:
* less screen flickering
* less resource usage (the search-query is often executed only once)

Cons:
* very slow search results take from a user point-of-view longer, because they
get executed after the debounce-delay.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04
Package: dash 0.5.8-2.1ubuntu2

[Bug 1506838] [NEW] no carrier setting pop-up

2015-10-16 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

Model: Meizu MX 4
OS: Ubuntu 15.04 (r4)
Carrier: O2 Germany

What you expected to happen:
When turning on the phone for the first time, some carriers send to you a
carrier-setting-file (through SMS or MMS). On Android the OS prompts me if I
want to install the file. It looks something like this:
http://cdn5.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/img_54caa5e48fef1.png

What happened instead:
I received the message that carrier setting where send to the phone, but no
pop-up or any other dialog was shown to me and therefore I couldn't install it.
Since my carrier uses something he calls "inland roaming" I'm unsure if the
send file would allow this functionality without the need to >>permanently<<
activate roaming in the device (like I have now, to use mobile internet).

[Bug 1504580] [NEW] startscreen - unlock not possible

2015-10-09 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

I just created an ubuntu emulator using the Ubuntu-SDK 'Devices' menu
and launched it. After selecting the initial options the launcher how-to
gets displayed. The problem is, I'm not able to 'Open the launcher' with
a mouse-swipe. Every time I swipe from the left edge of the emulator
window I'm asked to redo the swip-action.

I don't think that the how-to is technical broken, it is just very
hard/not possible to do it with a mouse. I have the impression that the
mouse-swipe input gets somewhat interrupted and can't therefore be
completed.

[Bug 1504083] [NEW] autostart - default column width is too small

2015-10-08 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1496368] [NEW] lxd-images import doesn't work on Snappy Ubuntu

2015-09-16 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

OS: Snappy Ubuntu Core on KVM (channel: 15.04/edge)
ubuntu-core 2015-09-13 146
docker2015-09-02 1.6.2.003

webdm 2015-07-07 0.9

I installed lxd using 'sudo snappy install lxd' → no error.
Followed by 'lxc remote add images images.linuxcontainers.org', took some time
→ no error.
Then I executed 'lxc image list images' out of curiosity → no image available,
no error.
I then executed as recommended 'lxd-images import ubuntu --alias ubuntu' which
resulted in the appended error-log-file and the following message:

Broadcast message from root@localhost.localdomain (Wed 2015-09-16

Public bug reported:

Phone: Meizu MX4 (15.04 r4)

What you expected to happen:
When connecting a Bluetooth keyboard I expect that the keyboard layout is the

As fare as I could see not. I quickly checked it when encountering the bug, but
couldn't find anything looking weird outside the browser.

[Bug 1482849] [NEW] middle mouse click displays linked content in current tab

2015-08-08 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu Wily Werewolf (development branch)
Release:15.10
webbrowser-app: 0.23+15.10.20150729-0ubuntu2~gcc5.1

What you expected to happen:
I'm using the browser on the desktop. When middle mouse clicking on a link I
expect the browser to open a new tab in the background and stay at the current
page. This way it is possible to continue reading the current content and read
the linked information later. All major browser implement the
middle-mouse-click event as described.

What happened instead:
* middle-mouse-click on link.
* current tab (tab1) keeps focus, but displays the content of the clicked link
(bug).

[Bug 1482557] [NEW] detail view should have a share button

Public bug reported:

with a friend. It would be nice if the detail view of the video scope
would have a share button, to make it easier to share videos.

[Bug 1482198] Re: tab becomes white after loading

I tried to reproduce the bug, but now the page is displayed correctly.

Yes, the address bar was visible and the "action menu" was clickable.

> If so, what happens if you focus the address bar and press Return on the OSK
> to load the page again?
I did try to find out how to reload a web page, but couldn't find the action
(too hidden). Therefore I can't tell what would have happened.

[Bug 1282847] Re: desktop ui scale is huge even though the setting is set to a scale of 1

2014-09-05 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
A friend of mine has the problem too. He first used his monitor over VGA and
scaled it up. Then got a new graphic card and connected it through HDMI. Even
when the scale factor was set to 1, the desktop was too big, so that some
buttons like the "power cog" wasn't visible at all.
We reconnected the monitor through VGA and to our surprise, the scale factor
wasn't 1 as expected, but higher. After resetting the scale factor to 1 and
switching again to HDMI the scale factor was correct and all the display
widgets visible.

He is now affected by this bug. The settings show scale factor 1 but the
font is huge.

[Bug 1335072] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT

2014-08-04 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Before installing the x-staging ppa
===
Both packages you listed (libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 & libgl1-mesa-glx:i386) are
already installed. The package manager doesn't complain about corrupted
packages, so I guess there is no problem. Starting Steam with my hardware
configuration and the default 14.10 packages still crashes the session.

After adding and installing the x-staging ppa
===
I was able to click on the Steam icon without the session crashing. The Steam
client updated itself – as expected – and prompted me for my login credentials.
Additionally this warning popped up:
>> OpenGL GLX context is not using direct rendering, which may cause
>> performance problems.
>> For more information visit
>> https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9938-EYZB-7457

As advised on the Steam website I installed mesa-utils:i386 and executed
glxinfo (output is attached).

[Bug 1302557] Re: bootstrapping local environment as none root doesn't work

2014-04-07 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
@James Page
After installing the newest updates - without the juju PPA - the juju version
is 1.17.7.

My ~/.juju/environments/ is owned by root, too.

I removed the ~/.juju folder and started again with:
juju generate-config
juju switch local
juju bootstrap

This time the bootstraping command could be executed.
I guess the bootstrap section of the juju lxc article should be updated by
removing sudo from the bootstrap command. In addition, it would be nice if juju
didn't create ~/.juju/environments when the user accidently runs sudo juju
bootstrap.
https://juju.ubuntu.com/docs/config-LXC.html#bootstrap-destroy

Off-topic:
Next I tried to set-up juju-gui by typing:
juju deploy juju-gui
juju expose juju-gui

I executed the juju-gui commands around 1 min after the juju bootstrap
command and it doesn't seem to work. Juju status gives me an agent-
state-info error '(error: template container "juju-precise-template" did
not stop)' (I could create a new bug ticket for this problem if you
wish). The log command in the lxc article doesn't work either (no
matches found). https://juju.ubuntu.com/docs/config-LXC.html#debug-log

[Bug 1073114] Re: Online Smart Scopes Do Not Respect User Privacy

2014-04-01 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
The problem isn't solved. I understood it like this:
Unity 8 will drop the Home Scope and therefore include a Scopes Scope. When
pressing the meta key and typing something into the Dash in Unity 8 the input
will be >>send<< to Canonical and then the Canonical server will return a list
of Scopes the user might want to search further. In the end all input will
still be send through the internet to Canonical. The only thing that would
change is, that not all input would be send to e.g. Amazon... but still, the
input leaves your computer what is IMHO a bad thing.

[Bug 1289907] [NEW] LIM flickers when dragging a window and mouse cursor moves over title bar

2014-03-08 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04

How it should be:
When moving a window by grabbing the title bar the LIM should know that the
window is currently being dragged and not show up until the drag action is
completed.

Problem:
If a window is moved by grabbing its title bar the LIM flickers (LIM gets
displayed and is quickly hidden) when the mouse cursor moves above or
underneath the window title bar.

I'm sorry, but sending a bug report to GNOME is like sending something to
/dev/null - it's useless (jep, it's pure frustration here).

[Bug 1247948] [NEW] setting items should have a fix order

2013-11-04 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

The current system settings icon order is alphabetical.

Problem 1:
Not the most important items are displayed at first in every row. For example
in the 'Hardware' category (English version), 'Bluetooth' is the first item,
but it should be IMHO 'Diesplays'.

Problem 2:
Sorting the icons alphabetical results in having the icons on different places
depending on the language the system currently uses -> pretty bad when
supporting other people through the phone...

It would be much better to give the icons a fixed position. This would
improve the system settings user experience, because the important
buttons would be faster accessible.

[Bug 1244979] [NEW] usb-creator workflow is unintuitive

2013-10-26 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

The usb-creator is kind of a semi public face of Ubuntu and an important
tool to spread it. Therefore it should be as strait forward and simple
to use as possible. To accomplish the goal of simplicity the usb-creator
should automate as much tasks as possible for the user, prevent the user
from making bad choices (installing an iso that is no longer updated)
and require as less interaction (clicks) as possible.

The current workflow is for me often like this:
* search on the Internet an iso file and download it
* insert an usb stick
* format the usb stick clicking the 'Erase Disk' button
* click the 'Other' button of 'Source disc image' to add the newly downloaded
iso to the list
* enlarge the usb-creator window to actually being able to see more than two
entries in the 'Source disc image' list.
* selecting the desired iso
* change the 'When starting up...' setting option from 'Stored in reserved
extra space' to 'Discard on shutdown...' (because the default often doesn't
work).
* click 'Make Startup Disk' button
* enter the root password to allow the usb-creator to create an boot loader on
the USB stick

The summary is, the list is way to long for such an important tool that
allows the spreading of Ubuntu.

How it should be:
* insert an usb stick -> USB stick is automatically recognized.
* the user clicks on a button that allows him to download a new image from
inside the usb-creator
* the user selects the OS and version to download (only important information
is displayed)
* clicking on the 'Download image' button downloads the iso and adds it to the
'Source disc image' list. When downloading is done the sub-creator should close
the download sub-page and highlight the downloaded image in the 'Source disc
image' list.
* 'Make Startup USB' button should start the creation of the startup stick. If
there is any data on the USB stick, ask the user if he is okay that the
usb-creator formats the stick, else just go one and don't ask the user any
more. Install the bootloader and what ever without asking the user.

This would represent the maximum steps a user would have to do to create
a startup USB stick.

[Bug 1244968] [NEW] don't ask the user for the root pw during startup creation

2013-10-26 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

It would be nice if the usb-creator wouldn't ask during the creation of
a startup USB stick the user for the root password to create the boot
loader on the USB stick. In the end, this makes the usb-creator a tool
for users with root rights only. Removing the pop-up box would make the
user experience much more pleasant.

[Bug 1244966] [NEW] remove 'When starting up from this disk...' section

2013-10-26 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

To make the usb-creator experience more pleasant and strait froward it
would be good if the 'When starting up from this disk...' section would
be dropped and replaced by a good default.

My personal experience is that the 'Stored in reserved extra space'
option doesn't always work, so I would like to suggest to make
'Discarded on shutdown...' the default.

[Bug 1244963] [NEW] always format the usb stick

2013-10-26 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

To make the process of creating a startup usb stick more strait forward it
would be nice if the usb stick would always be formatted. If there is any data
on the usb stick, ask the user before formatting.
The reason is that the current usb-creator needs too many steps to create a
startup usb, removing the need to format the usb dirve manually - to get the
usb drive ready – would result in a more pleasant user experience.

[Bug 1244960] [NEW] update source disc image list widget to display more relevant information

2013-10-26 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

The current source disc image list widget is much too small and
cluttered. Instead of the path to the iso and the size it should display
more relevant information for average users.

Things that should be displayed:
* the OS logo
* the OS name
* the OS version and if it's an LTS
* the CPU architecture

-> don't show iso files that are no longer supported.

Remark, maybe add a preferance setting to allow the user to see

[Bug 1244955] [NEW] auto detect *buntu iso images

2013-10-26 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

It would be nice if the usb-creator could auto detect iso images of
Ubuntu and its official derivates to remove the need for the user to add
them manually the to the usb-creator -> would make the usb-creator more
strait forward (like a music or photo app that auto detects content for
the user).

Use locate, Zeitgeist, find or what ever, but find the iso's.

locate "*.iso" is pretty fast.

[Bug 1244952] [NEW] usb creator should be able to download ubuntu images

2013-10-26 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

It should be possible for an average user to create a startup USB stick
without the need to leave the program interface / manually search on the
net for an iso file.

Canonical provides a fix way to get os images through http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
so it should be possible to download images automatically using zsync and only
download a bin-diff -something like:
zsync -i path-to-existing-iso url-new-iso.zsync

[Bug 1244696] [NEW] status bar flickers when changing image

2013-10-25 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

What you expected to happen:
The image viewer should not distract the user when watching images. This should
also apply to switching between different images.

What happened instead:
The described effect applies especial to images of the same size, because the
shape of the image doesn't change, the only moving part is the EOG interface.
When switching between images the status bar flickers. The reason is that it
displays for some milliseconds the string 'Opening image "file:///home'.

Suggested solution:
Display the 'Opening image' string only if the next image hasn't been loaded
after a certain amount of time (1 second).

[Bug 1222527] [NEW] Rename .desktop GenericName to something not too similar to 'Software Updater'

2013-09-08 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 13.10
Language: English US

UX Problem:
When searching in the Dash for the system software updater - a pretty common
task - always two entries are presented to the user with nearly the same name.
There is the update-manager labeled ' Software Updater' and there is
software-properties labeled 'Software & Updates', result: 'Software Updater'
and 'Software & Updates'.
Both names start with a capital S and a capital U → they should be easier to
distinguish.

Suggested solution:
Relabel the less common GenericName of the .desktop file to something else. As
the software-properties are less important IMHO for the daily use of an average
user, I purpose to relabel it to 'Software Settings'. Not my favorite name, but
visual much better to distinguish then the current name and it would share the
naming pattern of having 'Settings' at the end of a program that allows the
user to configure something.

[Bug 1210275] [NEW] WindowManager - Titlebar Actions should allow to close app

2013-08-08 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid

This way it would be possible to close applications by preforming a mouse click

Public bug reported:

Problem:
When booting Lubuntu for the first time there is no user name selected in the
login manager. Also bear in mind that it’s the first thing a new users sees.

Solution:
Select the user account that was created during the installation as default
login user.

[Bug 1191567] [NEW] UX - click on Dash preview image should trigger 'launch' action too

2013-06-16 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

Problem:
For an average user an icon represents a program, in the case of the Dash
preview it's the preview image. There is a good chance the users will click on
the Dash preview image expecting it launchs the default action. Also from an UX
point of view it is much easier to click on the preview image then the launch
bottom.

Solution:
Make the Dash preview clickable and launch the default action.

Annotation:
The current preview icons differs in size, it would be good to have a minimal
target area defined and visual delimited.

[Bug 934542] Re: LibreOffice's 'Export Directly as PDF' remains undetected by Zeitgeist

2013-06-08 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
An Ubuntu only solution could maybe be the new Upstart file bridge -
just an idea.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RaringRingtail/ReleaseNotes

This release provides a new bridge, the upstart-file-bridge(8) that allows jobs
to react to filesystem changes. For example, to have a job start when a
particular file is created:
start on file FILE=/var/app/*.foo EVENT=delete

[Bug 1176416] [NEW] UX – active sound source should be at top

2013-05-04 Thread Thibaut Brandscheid
Public bug reported:

Whats the problem:
If a user has multiple audio players, sound sources - which show up in the
sound indicator, the click target variates to control (e.g. stop) the current
playing application.

How it should be:
The current active playing sound source should be at top. If multiple sound
sources are active at the same time, show the newest at top. Most times there
will be only one active sound source and therefor a fix mouse target to control
the source. A side effect is, that this would also reduce the mouse distance
from the initial click at the sound indicator to the desired target.
