[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2020-01-21 Thread Thomas Perl
Were there already good reasons why it can't follow XDG, if only via symlinks?
https://specifications.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/basedir-spec-latest.html

Or if not, maybe there should be an updated XDG base dir specification
that takes into account the requirements of Snap and Flatpak and other
similar solutions?

Note that Desktop Linux isn't the only one having per-app directories,
on macOS it's in "~/Library/Application Support" (and "Library" is
hidden by default from Finder [file manager], but not in "ls") and on
Windows it's "%HOME%/AppData" (again, hidden by default).

I got my system-installed Chromium package upgraded on 19.10, which
pulled "snapd" back in (after I removed it a few days ago), so just "not
using snap" isn't really an option for now (if on Ubuntu). Of course,
Debian and Fedora provide a snap-less experience by default.

Given that third party vendors seem to prefer Flatpak, the Linux app
updating experience gets more fragmented, from a simple "apt dist-
upgrade" to an apt+flatpak+snap+whatever task.

At least Flatpak stores data in "$HOME/.var/app/" (from a visibility
perspective), but that's still not XDG, so it's still bad.

Also, funny how the Chromium DEB->SNAP transition needed a folder
migration (the blog post https://snapcraft.io/blog/chromium-in-ubuntu-
deb-to-snap-transition says "an existing Chrimium user profile will be
imported [provided there is enough disk space]), this could have been so
much simpler (and not potentially break users' profiles or require more
free disk space than strictly necessary).

Given that there won't be The Single Solution for Linux app packaging,
it would be cool if user data could be shared between Snap/Flatpak/DEB
installations of an app. Then it's really a matter of "your DEB is too
old? grab the Snap or Flatpak!", and not "oh well that's not compatible,
you have to move files around and hope for the best". Also allows for
switching between DEB/Snap/Flatpak seemlessly without "vendor lock-in".

Looks like you used a newer version and then downgraded to an older
version? An older version can't open the database that has been upgraded

Can you run "gpodder" in a Terminal and post the output? You can get the
output for example using:

gpodder --verbose 2>&1 | tee ~/Desktop/gpodder-log.txt

After running gPodder and reproducing the bug, there should be a file
"gpodder-log.txt" that you can attach here. If possible, before
uploading please open the text file in a text editor and remove any
personally identifying information - if any.

[Bug 1311464] Re: On upgrade from 12.04 14.04 gPodder does not copy over podcasts and config

2014-05-03 Thread Thomas Perl
If you upgraded from gPodder 2.x to gPodder 3.x, you have to use the
utility shipped with gPodder 3:

gpodder-migrate2tres

This will move your old database to the new file format.

[Bug 1048156] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGSEGV in UpdateNativeMenu()

On Unity, it also crashes, but I get the following error:

** (soffice:25543): CRITICAL **: void g_lo_menu_remove(GLOMenu*, gint):
assertion `0 = position position (gint) menu-items-len' failed

The difference in behaviour could be because Unity and Gnome Shell
differ in terms of how the menus are displayed.

[Bug 982316] Re: Deja Dup is unable to detect network connection

2012-07-15 Thread Thomas Perl
I'm experiencing the same problem, as storage I'm using a SSH server,
and my configuration is set up in ~/.ssh/config, so I've only set the
Server and Folder fields in the Backup app.

Tracing this back to the code (looking at the deja-dup_22.0-0ubuntu2
source) gives me common/BackendFile.vala:

[...]
else {
  when = _(Backup will begin when a network connection becomes
available.);
  return yield Network.get().can_reach (file.get_uri ());
}
[...]

Looking deeper into it, in common/Network.vala there's public async
bool can_reach(string url) that will use the GIO GNetworkMonitor
can_reach_async() method:

[...]
  public async bool can_reach(string url)
  {
var mon = NetworkMonitor.get_default();
try {
  var socket = NetworkAddress.parse_uri(url, 0);
  return yield mon.can_reach_async(socket);
[...]

The function is documented here:
http://developer.gnome.org/gio/2.32/GNetworkMonitor.html#g-network-
monitor-can-reach-async

The socket is determined by parse_uri:
http://valadoc.org/#!api=gio-2.0/GLib.NetworkAddress.parse_uri

I'm not sure if there's an easy solution to this problem, especially
since it's not enough to just parse the SSH config and check for the
right hostname, as one could use ProxyCommand to do further
indirections (I coincidentally do this, because I have to connect to
different IPs depending on whether or not I'm inside or outside the
private network where the backup machine is located).

Host mybackupserver
ProxyCommand some-script-to-open-a-ssh-connection

See the ssh_config(5) manpage for more information.

I guess the easiest way to fix this would be to special-case SSH URIs
and just use the ssh command to try to make a connection, and use that
for the can_reach method - this will also take care of ProxyCommand and
friends, and should be more to the point.

[Bug 948561] Re: must use root (sudo) for gpodder to work properly

2012-03-06 Thread Thomas Perl
It works fine for me with 20.20 on 11.10. It must be some permission
problem or misconfiguration on your side.

Please check the permissions of the following files/directories (e.g.
with ls -l):

 * ~/ (your $HOME)
 * ~/gpodder-downloads/
 * ~/.config/
 * ~/.config/gpodder/

Please also send a log of gPodder's output when run as normal user in
verbose mode:

 gpodder --verbose 21 | tee gpodder-log.txt

Attach the resulting log here.

Also, do you have any kind of firewall or other application installed
that would disallow network access for normal users or applications? Do
you have SELinux or AppArmor installed / enabled and set to enforcing
mode, disallowing network access for gPodder?

[Bug 940501] [NEW] Leaving Unity in switcher (Super+S) will not lock screen

2012-02-24 Thread Thomas Perl
Public bug reported:

When I leave Unity in switcher mode (all 4 workspaces visible,
Super+S) and leave my computer for a while, returning to it will show
the Desktops. Only when I select a Desktop from the switcher will it
show the lock screen.

Preconditions:

 * System Settings - Brightness and Lock - Turn screen off when
inactive for: 1 minute, Lock: on, Lock screen after: Screen turns off

How to reproduce:

 1. Have any application open on workspace 1
 2. Enable the switcher (Super+S) or click on Workspace Switcher in Unity
 3. Wait for 1 minute for the screen to turn off
 4. Move the mouse

Expected outcome:

 * The password entry for the lock screen is displayed

Actual outcome:

 * I can see the workspace switcher and all windows and their live contents
 * Only after selecting a workspace (e.g. by double-clicking) will the lock
screen kick in

Reproducability:

 * always

[Bug 794270] Re: Enqueue as alternative to Play

2011-06-08 Thread Thomas Perl
Thanks for this idea!

The supporting code for this has now been committed to the tres branch
(upcoming 3.x releases of gPodder, unstable branch):
http://gpodder.org/commit/b0f24a0bc

With this, users will be able to write hook scripts that append items to
the context menu, so not only can you do the enqueue stuff, but pretty
much everything that you would want to do..

Here's a tested example hook script that I wrote that adds an Enqueue in VLC
item to the context menu:
https://github.com/gpodder/gpodder-hook-scripts/blob/master/enqueue_in_vlc.py

It works as expected, and you should be able to customize it for your
needs.

[Bug 794270] Re: Enqueue as alternative to Play

2011-06-08 Thread Thomas Perl
Yes, once it's out, it will be available in the PPA. The problem right
now is that the on-disk format (DB schema, storage locations, etc..)
have changed, and even though there is a migration script available, I'd
like to keep the opportunity open for me to make changes to the schema
and locations until 3.0 is out, so that's why I don't encourage people
to try it. If you don't care about possibly losing your podcast
downloads and database, you can check it out from the tres branch of
the official gPodder Git repository and try it out already.

As described in bug #703252, I can reliably reproduce this issue with
the following steps:

1.) Make sure all applications are closed
2.) Open Firefox
3.) Set Firefox to Fullscreen (using the menu or F11)
4.) The Unity Sidebar and Panel disappear, Firefox is fullscreen
5.) Move your mouse to the top right corner of the screen
6.) Click (while still in fullscreen) on x (close window)

[Bug 703252] [NEW] Sidebar and panel do not reappear after closing fullscreen app

2011-01-15 Thread Thomas Perl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

On an up to date Ubuntu Maverick installation, it is possible to bring
Unity into a situation where the sidebar and panel are hidden and
nothing is displayed (only the wallpaper).

Steps to reproduce:

1.) Make sure all applications are closed
2.) Open Firefox
3.) Set Firefox to Fullscreen (using the menu or F11)
4.) The Unity Sidebar and Panel disappear, Firefox is fullscreen
5.) Move your mouse to the top right corner of the screen
6.) Click (while still in fullscreen) on x (close window)

Expected outcome:

1.) The Unity Sidebar and Panel reappear ('slide in')

Actual outcome:

1.) Only the wallpaper appears - no sidebar/panel

Other remarks:

The workaround for now is to set up a keyboard shortcut for opening
Firefox and when the situation happens again, open Firefox, leave
fullscreen mode (F11), which makes the Unity sidebar appear again, and
then close Firefox.

[Bug 660299] Re: Missing dependency

2010-10-29 Thread Thomas Perl
This bug will be fixed in the next gPodder release, and Ubuntu users
should use the gPodder PPA (linked from the gpodder.org download page),
as we can't get new releases of gPodder into the Ubuntu Repositories
(gPodder's development cycle is ~ 1 month, and Ubuntu lags ~ 9 months
behind [release cycle + Debian import freeze] in the worst case). Just
to let you know and to avoid the proliferation of custom builds/packages
floating around the web ;) gPodder 2.9 is the current version, version
2.6 was released in May 2010.

This depends entirely on the Ubuntu MOTUs - the source of the updated

upload the fix to the Lucid archives.

I'll also be happy to provide a patch against the current package
version in Lucid if that's what the MOTUs want, although I'd prefer to
get the newest version into Lucid if possible.

Please try the following in your Git checkout (don't git pull or you
will have to install the python-mygpoclient package, as we are in the
middle of a transition - in case you accidentally do it, use git
checkout gpodder-before-mygpoclient to get the last revision before
that dependency is introduced):

In src/gpodder/gtkui/base.py in the set_attributes method there is a
line that says:

widget_name = widget.get_name()

Please replace that line by:

widget_name = gtk.Buildable.get_name(widget)

Then, try to re-run gPodder from the Git checkout (bin/gpodder
--verbose) and report back if this fixes your problem. Thanks :)

[Bug 508886] Re: gpodder crashed with AttributeError in set_attributes()

2010-01-20 Thread Thomas Perl
(Oh, and just a personal reminder for me: If my assumption is correct,
this is related to the fix in
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=591085 being applied in
released versions, and that we should now use the buildable name to
fetch the widget ID.)

[Bug 443317] [NEW] Feedparser cannot parse official EA.com podcast

2009-10-05 Thread Thomas Perl
Public bug reported:

The official EA Podcast at http://www.ea.com/rest/podcast cannot be
parsed with feedparser, although it can be viewed from within Firefox
and downloaded using wget. Some debugging with wireshark reveals that
the Accept: header that is sent by the feedparser is not understood by
the server correctly. Adding */* as additional accept type solves the
problem and lets feedparser download the feed.

 import feedparser
 f = feedparser.parse('http://www.ea.com/rest/podcast')
 f
{'feed': {}, 'encoding': 'utf-8', 'bozo': 1, 'version': None, 'entries': [],
'bozo_exception': HTTPError()}
 print f.bozo_exception
HTTP Error 302: The HTTP server returned a redirect error that would lead to an
infinite loop.
The last 30x error message was:
Found

I will attach a patch that fixes this wrong behaviour (although one
might argue that the server is to blame).

[Bug 315414] Re: Cannot change Download folder if no file was downloaded

2009-01-12 Thread Thomas Perl
Can you please try to reproduce this bug with the latest version of
gPodder (0.14.0) from either Debian unstable or www.gpodder.org ?

[Bug 313519] Re: FingerScroll: Rubberband effect doesn't work after switching the value of mode property

2009-01-05 Thread Thomas Perl
For the Ubuntu maintainers: The Maemo package is based on the Ubuntu
package, and the Ubuntu-specific patches (especially spring2.patch)
have been left in the package, so it's related to the Ubuntu package as
well.

From what I can see from the source, spring2.patch adds the changes
for the rubberband effect, so it probably is a bug in that patch.

[Bug 297700] Re: gpodder shows dialog Nothing selected, but file is played

2008-11-21 Thread Thomas Perl
Please use this: http://khan.thpinfo.com/~thp/deb-
outgoing/gpodder_0.13.1-1_all.deb

gPodder 0.13.1 is currently not available in Ubuntu due to the way they
manage their stable releases.

If you don't trust the .deb from the link above, you can also grab
0.13.1 (either the architecture independent binary or the source
package) from Debian's unstable repository:
http://packages.debian.org/sid/gpodder

Thanks for providing this feedback! :)

Which gPodder version are you using? Does this happen with 0.13.1 too?

[Bug 36651] Re: Network Manager does not remember WEP/WPA key

2008-11-03 Thread Thomas Perl
I have installed Intrepid Ibex (final!) and am experiencing the same bug
- it seems like Network Manager saves/decodes the password in a wrong
way, because the entry box is pre-filled with a (wrong, much longer) key
and when I enter my key, it works. It is annoying that it does not save
the WPA key!
