[Bug 1251849] Re: [VX820] Regression: driver does not work on Samsung NC20

2014-03-20 Thread Thomas Schlichter
@Alberto: I use a Samsung NC20 Netbook with a Via Nano Processor and the
VX800 chipset. I am using it with several 32 bit Kubuntu releases since
2009. I had the regression described in this thread, that's the reason
why I created and use the package in my PPA. But with that, everything
runs fine for me... :-)

[Bug 1251849] Re: [VX820] Regression: driver does not work on Samsung NC20

2014-03-19 Thread Thomas Schlichter
Dear Alberto,

from your logs, it seems that the package in my PPA at least improved
the situation, and X does not crash anymore when loading the openchrome
driver.

But it seems you have an additional problem to the one that was solved in the
package in my PPA.
I recognized that you use a 64 Bit system, whereas I am using a 32 Bit system.
Maybe there is an additional regression affecting only 64 Bit systems?

Anyways, I think you could try compiling your own openchrome driver
based on the latest upstream version and report your bug there, too.
With git, you may even be able to find the commit that introduced your
regression for your system.

Kind regards,
  Thomas

[Bug 995005] Re: C-state C3 does not work after disconnecting the AC power from notebook

2013-01-30 Thread Thomas Schlichter
You are right, I just recognized that only one of the patches went to
stable. But as both are required to fix the bug, I think I'll ask if the
other patch could go to stable, too.

Kind regards,
  Thomas

[Bug 995005] Re: C-state C3 does not work after disconnecting the AC power from notebook

2013-01-28 Thread Thomas Schlichter
FInally two patches have been merged upstream that together fix this bug:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git;a=commitdiff;h=8aef33a7cf40ca9da188e8578b2abe7267a38c52

It would be great if you could also merge these commits to fix this bug
in Precise and Quantal.

[Bug 995005] [NEW] C-state C3 does not work after disconnecting the AC power from notebook

2012-05-05 Thread Thomas Schlichter
Public bug reported:

On my Samsung NC20 Netbook the BIOS hides the C3 C-state when the AC
power is connected, but it should show up and work as soon as the AC
power is disconnected.

This expected behavior worked fine as long as I used Oneiric. But now I
upgraded to Precise and now C3 does not work anymore after disconnecting
the AC power.

I have verified, that booting the Oneiric kernel 3.0.0-19.33 instead of
the Precise Kernel 3.2.0-24.37 (same userspace) fixes the problem.

To gather some information, I executed this command with the Precise kernel
  grep -r /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpuidle/
in different system states:
1. newly booted without having the AC power attached
2. having the AC power attached (without C3, as expected)
3. now after having the AC power disconnected (not functional C3 -- bug)

The output is combined in the attached file cpuidle.txt.

[Bug 953344] [NEW] [VX800] openchrome hangs when the scissors tool in gimp is used

2012-03-12 Thread Thomas Schlichter
Public bug reported:

When the scissors tool in gimp is used, the system hangs.

System Information:
- Samsung NC20 Netbook (VIA VX800)
- Ubuntu Oneiric
- DDX: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome (1:0.2.904+svn920-1ubuntu0.1)
- XAA enabled

Workaround:
- Use EXA instead of XAA

Fix:
- Available in upstream commit 921
- Already applied in xserver-xorg-video-openchrome
(1:0.2.904+svn920-1ubuntu0.1),
  but re-introduced with Ubuntu-patch 101_xaa_solid.patch (LP: #410262)

Upstream bug report:
  http://openchrome.org/trac/ticket/354

Kind regards,
  Thomas

[Bug 410262] Re: [VX800]openchrome hangs when the mouse cursor is inside of a image in gimp

2012-03-06 Thread Thomas Schlichter
With the release of the new package I did happily see that the patch from
revision 921 (which fixed the problem for me) was added.
Unfortunately I had to realize that also xaa_solid.patch was added what
re-introduced the gimp-hang for me. I was also reporting that upstream in bug
354, and thus this second patch was not applied upstream.

  http://openchrome.org/trac/ticket/354

So please revert 101_xaa_solid.patch, as this re-introduces this bug
for me!

P.S.: For me it is 100% reproducible be using the scissors-tool in gimp.

[Bug 946238] [NEW] QUrl.toLocalFile returns nothing if given non-canonical path

2012-03-04 Thread Thomas Schlichter
Public bug reported:

I did observe that there are no notification sounds with the KDE 4.8 backport
in oneiric.
The reason is this bug in KDE 4.8:
   https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=285028

So it is not the fault of KDE itself, but a bug in qt4-x11 version 4.8.0 and is
already fixed in version 4.8.1:
   https://bugreports.qt-project.org/browse/QTBUG-22382

As precise uses the same version of qt4-x11, the bug should be there, too.
So please update qt4-x11 to version 4.8.1

[Bug 778043] [NEW] vesafb: mtrr module parameter is uint, not bool

2011-05-05 Thread Thomas Schlichter
Public bug reported:

The UBUNTU SAUCE patches that add module support to vesafb make the
mtrr module parameter bool. This only allows the values 0 and 1,
thus no MTRR entries or uncachable MTRR entries. To enable write-
combining (or write-back) MTRR entries, the mtrr module parameter
should be uint (or int).

I'll attach two patches, the first makes the described modification, the
second one additionally makes write-combining MTRR entries the default.
(Just as it already is for e.g. uvesafb.)

Kind regards,
  Thomas

2011-01-24 Thread Thomas Schlichter
@Andi -- I already did the first step with slightly improved patches:

  http://marc.info/?m=129086507505163

Unfortunately the ioremap_{wc,cache,nocache} functions seem not to be
supported by all the architectures where [u]vesafb build. Paul Mundt
recognized it, and now I'm looking if I can establish these functions
for all architectures, or at least be sure to correctly use fall-back
functions.

As I'm quite busy now with my daily work, this may have to wait a bit...

[Bug 574733] Re: serve Xorg performance penalty due to [u]vesafb creating wrong PAT entries

2010-06-08 Thread Thomas Schlichter
Hi,

I tested this kernel linked from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds
with lucid:
   linux-image-2.6.35-999-generic_2.6.35-999.201006021335_i386.deb

It does not contain vesafb but uvesafb module. So I tested uvesafb and
it behaves just like the lucid kernel module. This means even though
uvesafb adds write-combining MTRR entries it adds uncached-minus PAT
entries. Therefore the openchrome driver cannot add overlapping write-
combining PAT entries and also uses uncached-minus PAT entries. This
results in the serve performance penalty exactly as described in my
first post.

So no difference between lucid kernel and mainline kernel. I'll remove
the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag.

Best regards,
  Thomas

[Bug 574733] Re: serve Xorg performance penalty due to [u]vesafb creating wrong PAT entries

2010-06-06 Thread Thomas Schlichter
Hi Jeremy,

today I tested the maverick alpha 1 and observed the same behavior as with
lucid:
1. No extra kernel parameters:
  - vga16fb is loaded and not [u]vesafb
  - thus the framebuffer terminal does not work on my NC20 (maybe I should open
a bug for this, too?)
  - no PAT entries are created by vga16fb
  - correct (write combining) PAT entries for openchrome
2. video=vesafb:mtrr=3 vga=792 kernel parameter
  - vesafb is loaded
  - now the framebuffer terminal works correctly
  - uncached-minus PAT entries are created by vesafb
  - incorrect (uncached-minus) PAT entries for openchrome

Unfortunately the maverick alpha 1 ISO has no uvesafb in the initramfs,
so I couldn't test this.

I will upload the apport files while above config 2. is loaded.

Kind regards,
  Thomas

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Hi,

when using uvesafb or vesafb, these drivers will create uncached-minus
PAT entries for the framebuffer memory because they use ioremap(). WHen
the framebuffer memory intersects with the video RAM used by Xorg, the
complete video RAM will be mapped uncached-minus what results in a
  server performance penalty.

Here are the correct MTRR entries created by uvesafb:
  schli...@netbook:~$ cat /proc/mtrr
  reg00: base=0x0 (0MB), size= 2048MB, count=1: write-back
  reg01: base=0x06ff0 ( 1791MB), size=1MB, count=1: uncachable
  reg02: base=0x07000 ( 1792MB), size= 256MB, count=1: uncachable
  reg03: base=0x0d000 ( 3328MB), size= 16MB, count=1: write-combining

And here are the problematic PAT entries:
  schli...@netbook:~$ sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/x86/pat_memtype_list
  PAT memtype list:
  write-back @ 0x0-0x1000
  uncached-minus @ 0x6fedd000-0x6fee3000

create the correct PAT entries, as shown below:

[Bug 574746] Re: [VX800] serve Xorg performance regression (fullscreen flash)

2010-05-09 Thread Thomas Schlichter
Hi,

I finally found the reason for the worse x11perf ShmPutImage results,
which turned out to be unrelated to the flash fullscreen issue, and I
found a way to fix the fullscreen flash issue here.

First, the worse x11perf ShmPutImage are a result of this change in xorg:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=11817a881cb93a89788105d1e575a468f2a8d27c

With this change reverted, I get back the high benchmark result, but I
see that the described bug is reintroduced and it does _not_ help the
fullscreen flash issue. So it's better to not revert this change...

But then I found an easy way to get the good karmic fullscreen flash
experience. I simply had to disable hardware acceleration in the flash
preferences. So this bug seems to be in the flash player trying to use
hardware acceleration which is not available...

So thank you for your attention, and sorry for the noise!

Kind regards,
  Thomas

[Bug 574746] Re: [VX800] serve Xorg performance regression (fullscreen flash)

2010-05-04 Thread Thomas Schlichter
Hi Bartosz,

I compiled the latest version of openchrome (r851) which seems to
already include the patch you posted (r848). Unfortunately this does not
change anything regarding the fullscreen flash problem nor for the
x11perf testcase. I tested XAA and EXA, both didn't change
significantly. The EXA results will be attached.

As I had the setup now, I also built the version I used with karmic
(r838) and tested this. Unfortunately no change either. So I don't think
this is related with the openchrome driver alone, I think this problem
is about a change in the core Xorg server.

Kind regards,
  Thomas

[Bug 574733] [NEW] serve Xorg performance penalty due to [u]vesafb creating wrong PAT entries

2010-05-03 Thread Thomas Schlichter
Public bug reported:

Hi,

when using uvesafb or vesafb, these drivers will create uncached-minus
PAT entries for the framebuffer memory because they use ioremap(). WHen
the framebuffer memory intersects with the video RAM used by Xorg, the
complete video RAM will be mapped uncached-minus what results in a
server performance penalty.

Here are the correct MTRR entries created by uvesafb:
schli...@netbook:~$ cat /proc/mtrr
reg00: base=0x0 (0MB), size= 2048MB, count=1: write-back
reg01: base=0x06ff0 ( 1791MB), size=1MB, count=1: uncachable
reg02: base=0x07000 ( 1792MB), size= 256MB, count=1: uncachable
reg03: base=0x0d000 ( 3328MB), size= 16MB, count=1: write-combining

And here are the problematic PAT entries:
schli...@netbook:~$ sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/x86/pat_memtype_list
PAT memtype list:
write-back @ 0x0-0x1000
uncached-minus @ 0x6fedd000-0x6fee3000
uncached-minus @ 0x6fee2000-0x6fee3000

uncached-minus @ 0x6fee3000-0x6fee4000
uncached-minus @ 0xd000-0xe000 -- created by xserver-xorg

uncached-minus @ 0xf5404000-0xf5405000
uncached-minus @ 0xfed0-0xfed01000

Therefore I created the attached patch for uvesafb which uses ioremap_wc() to
create the correct PAT entries, as shown below:
schli...@netbook:~$ sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/x86/pat_memtype_list
PAT memtype list:
write-back @ 0x0-0x1000
uncached-minus @ 0x6fedd000-0x6fee3000

uncached-minus @ 0x6fee2000-0x6fee3000
uncached-minus @ 0x6fee2000-0x6fee3000
uncached-minus @ 0x6fee3000-0x6fee4000
uncached-minus @ 0x6fee3000-0x6fee4000
uncached-minus @ 0x6fee3000-0x6fee4000
write-combining @ 0xd000-0xe000
write-combining @ 0xd000-0xd1194000
uncached-minus @ 0xf400-0xf4009000
uncached-minus @ 0xf420-0xf440
uncached-minus @ 0xf500-0xf501
uncached-minus @ 0xf510-0xf5104000
uncached-minus @ 0xf540-0xf5404000
uncached-minus @ 0xf5404000-0xf5405000
uncached-minus @ 0xf5404000-0xf5405000
uncached-minus @ 0xfed0-0xfed01000

This results in a performance gain, objectively measurable with e.g. x11perf
-comppixwin10 -comppixwin100 -comppixwin500:
1: x11perf_xaa_lucid.log
2: x11perf_xaa_lucid_patched.log

You can see the serve performance gain when composing larger pixmaps to window.

[Bug 574746] [NEW] serve Xorg performance regression (fullscreen flash)

2010-05-03 Thread Thomas Schlichter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Hi,

I am the owner of a Samsung NC20 netbook with a Via Nano CPU and a Via
VX800 chipset. With karmic I was able to play most fullscreen flash
videos fluently. After the upgrade to lucid, this it no more possible. I
already found and fixed a bug for me (Launchpad Bug #574733) and the
performance got measurably better, but there is still a major regressen
and fullscreen flash is like a dia show.

I think I got a way to show/measure the problem with x11perf -shmputxy10

As you can see, EXA is better than XAA, but more important, lucid is
much worse than karmic for the ShmPutImage XY test. As these numbers
relate very good to my fullscreen flash experience, I think this may be
related.
